A Wheel Electrostatic Spectrometer has been developed as a surveying tool to be incorporated into a planetary rover design. Electrostatic sensors with various protruding cover insulators are embedded into a prototype rover wheel. When these insulators come into contact with a surface, a charge develops on the cover insulator through tribocharging. A charge spectrum is created by analyzing the accumulated charge on each of the dissimilar cover insulators. We eventually intend to prove charge spectra can be used ~o determine differences in planetary regolith properties. We tested the effects of residual surface charge on the cover insulators and discovered a need to discharge the sensor cover insulators after each revolution. We proved the repeatability of the measurements for this sensor package and found that the sensor repeatability lies within one standard deviation of the noise in the signal.
Advancements in computer hardware has led to new possibilities for rapid modeling and simulation capabilities across many scientific fields. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) can benefit from increased use of simulation tools to guide optimization of inspection and health monitoring methods, enhance understanding of data, aid in development of defect characterization methods, and generate data sets for use with machine learning and model-assisted probability of detection. Recent work at NASA has entailed development and benchmarking of both custom simulation codes and commercial simulation tools for ultrasonic wave propagation. This paper describes recent work at NASA in modeling of guided waves in composites and other aerospace materials. Results and computational speeds for a composite benchmark case are reported for a custom finite difference Rotated Staggered Grid code and for the commercial finite element software package, Pogo. Recent progress in linking NDE models to parametric analysis tools is also discussed.
Image segmentation methods are routinely used to analyze data derived in nondestructive testing scenarios. A typical problem in this area is to estimate porosity from X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) inspections. This investigation aims to understand the effectiveness of open-source image segmentation methods for porosity estimation from optical images in the context of strength analysis of bonded materials and provides a benchmark of performance against a standard commercial software package. The rank ordering of the specimens by porosity area fraction is consistent across both methods.
The aim of this study was to examine the influence of pressure-assisted thermal sterilization (PATS) on properties of polymeric packaging and packaged avocado puree. High pressure of 600 MPa and initial vessel temperature of 90 °C were used over 5 min processing time. We used two high barrier film pouches: Film A-(PE/PA6//EVOH//PA6/PE) and film B-(AlO x -coated PET//AlO x -coated PET//PA//CPP). Oxygen transmission rates (OTR) changed from 0.16 ± 0.07 to 3.24 ± 0.52 cm 3 /m 2 .day for film A after processing while OTRs were not detected for film B. Water vapor transmission rates (WVTR) changed from 3.72 ± 0.06 to 4.97 ± 0.14 g/m 2 .day for film A and 0.11 ± 0.02 to 0.62 ± 0.0.6 g/m 2 .day for film B. The dissolved oxygen in packaged avocado puree reduced from 21% to 3% after PATS for both films. Reduced oxygen level in packaged avocado may help extend its shelf life. Dielectric properties and X-ray diffraction helped explain PATS induced changes in film barrier properties. The total chlorophyll, greenness, and lightness decreased significantly (p < 0.05) after PATS. The thiobarbituric acid activity reduced after PATS. PATS showed potential to produced shelf-stable avocado puree; however, shelf-life studies are needed to further develop PATS process.
This data package is associated with the publication “Dissolved Organic Matter Functional Trait Relationships are Conserved Across Rivers” submitted to PNAS (Stegen et al., 2023). The study aims to understand large-scale spatial structure of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) thermodynamic traits and inter-trait relationships by investigating (1) river water and sediments collected along 97 rivers spanning 3 continents and (2) coastal sediment collected from fresh and saline locations in Pacific and Gulf/Atlantic rivers. Sediment extracts and water samples were analyzed using ultrahigh resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS). This dataset is comprised of three folders (1) Coastal, (2) WHONDR_S19S, and (3) Data_Dictionaries. Coastal contains (1) a subfolder with processed FTICR-MS data as csv files and sample collection metadata, (2) a subfolder with R scripts used to process the data and create associated figures, (3) a subfolder with the raw, unprocessed FTICR-MS data as .xml files, and (4) a readme file with more information about the dataset and instructions for using Formularity (https://omics.pnl.gov/software/formularity). WHONDRS_S19S contains (1) a csv file with processed FTICR data, (2) a csv with sample collection metadata, (3) a csv with sample geospatial data, (4) a csv with simulated lambda model outputs, (5) a subfolder with R scripts used to process the data and create associated figures, and (6) a readme file with more information regarding WHONDRS raw FTICR data and processing scripts. Data_Dictionaries contains data dictionaries for each csv file in the data package. The 97 global river corridors were part of a WHONDRS (https://whondrs.pnnl.gov) study. The raw, unprocessed FTICR-MS data with additional data can be found at doi:10.15485/1729719 for sediments and doi:10.15485/1603775 for water. This data package contains the processed data used in the associated manuscript. The coastal data has not been previously published, and this data package contains both the raw and processed data. Version 3 of this data package published February 2023 includes updates to the title of the manuscript, additional data and data dictionary and updated scripts linked to new analysis.
ARMS is a robust code for solving the single-fluid, fully compressible equations of magnetohydrodynamics. In this presentation I will describe how to access and run ARMS and how to use HelioSpace to analyze the results. The main features of the code are the following: 1. Equations are solved in either Cartesian or Spherical coordinates. For the latter, either a linear or a Log(r) coordinate can be used. 2. The latest flux-corrected-transport schemes developed at NRZ, are used to advance the convective equations. All waves and shocks are accurately captured. 3. A fully adaptive grid can be used. The code incorporates the PARAMESH technology for block-adaptation. Arbitrary adaptation criteria can be specified. 4. The code maintains a divergence-free magnetic field to machine accuracy throughout all refinement and de-refinement. 5. A uniform resistivity and thermal conduction can be included. Solution is either explicit or implicit. 6. Arbitrary boundary and initial conditions can be used in either Cartesian or spherical coordinates. 7. An accompanying visualization package, HelioSpace, is available for viewing and analyzing the native ARMS output, (without need for interpolating onto a structured grid).
Families of cosmic inflation models predict a primordial gravitational-wave background that imprints B-mode polarization pattern in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). High-sensitivity instruments with wide frequency coverage and well-controlled systematic errors are needed to constrain the faint B-mode amplitude. We have developed antenna-coupled transition edge sensor arrays for high-sensitivity polarized CMB observations over a wide range of millimeter-wave bands. BICEP array, the latest phase of the BICEP/Keck experiment series, is a multi-receiver experiment designed to search for inflationary B-mode polarization to a precision σ(r) between 0.002 and 0.004 after 3 full years of observations, depending on foreground complexity and the degree of lensing removal. We describe the electromagnetic design and measured performance of BICEP array’s low-frequency 40-GHz detector, their packaging in focal plane modules, and optical characterization including efficiency and beam matching between polarization pairs. We summarize the design and simulated optical performance, including an approach to improve the optical efficiency due to mismatch losses. Here, we report the measured beam maps for a new broadband corrugation design to minimize beam differential ellipticity between polarization pairs caused by interactions with the module housing frame, which helps minimize polarized beam mismatch that converts CMB temperature to polarization (T→P) anisotropy in CMB maps.
Zernike polynomials serve as an orthogonal basis on the unit disc, and have proven to be effective in optics simulations, astrophysics, and more recently in plasma simulations. Unlike Bessel functions, Zernike polynomials are inherently finite and smooth at the disc center (r=0), ensuring continuous differentiability along the axis. This property makes them particularly suitable for simulations, requiring no additional handling at the origin. We developed ZERNIPAX, an open-source Python package capable of utilizing CPU/GPUs, leveraging Google's JAX package and available on GitHub as well as the Python software repository PyPI. Furthermore, our implementation of the recursion relation between Jacobi polynomials significantly improves computation time compared to alternative methods by use of parallel computing while still performing more accurately for high-mode numbers.
Abstract Interfacial mechanical properties are important in composite materials and their applications, including vehicle structures, soft robotics, and aerospace. Determination of traction–separation (T–S) relations at interfaces in composites can lead to evaluations of structural reliability, mechanical robustness, and failures criteria. Accurate measurements on T–S relations remain challenging, since the interface interaction generally happens at microscale. With the emergence of machine learning (ML), data-driven model becomes an efficient method to predict the interfacial behaviors of composite materials and establish their mechanical models. Here, we combine ML, finite element analysis (FEA), and empirical experiments to develop data-driven models that characterize interfacial mechanical properties precisely. Specifically, eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) multi-output regressions and classifier models are harnessed to investigate T–S relations and identify the imperfection locations at interface, respectively. The ML models are trained by macroscale force–displacement curves, which can be obtained from FEA and standard mechanical tests. The results show accurate predictions of T–S relations ( R 2 = 0.988) and identification of imperfection locations with 81% accuracy. Our models are experimentally validated by 3D printed double cantilever beam specimens from different materials. Furthermore, we provide a code package containing trained ML models, allowing other researchers to establish T–S relations for different material interfaces.
The seventh day of the STS-82 mission begins with the crew, Commander Kenneth D. Bowersox, Pilot Scott J. Horowitz, Payload Commander Mark C. Lee, and Mission Specialists Gregory J. Harbaugh, Steven L. Smith, Joseph R. Tanner, and Steven A. Hawley performing their third spacewalk of the mission by emerging from Discovery's airlock. Their first task is the replacement of a Solar Array Drive Electronics package which is used to control the positioning of Hubble's solar arrays. Harbaugh and Tanner next venture to the top of the telescope where they replaced covers over Hubble's magnetometers, which are used to sense the telescope's position in relation to the Earth through data acquired from the Earth's magnetic field. The spacewalking astronauts then place thermal blankets of multi-layer material over two areas of degraded insulation around the light shield portion of the telescope just below the top of the astronomical observatory.

Over the past five years (June 2017-current), the vertical electric field (E z ) as well as numerous cloud, precipitation and radiation properties have been monitored at the Department of Energy-Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (DOE ARM) North Slope of Alaska (NSA) field site. Comparisons between the composite diurnal averaged fair-weather E z , and composite ceilometer derived cloud base height during the polar night, reveal a significant correlation between the parameters (r = 0.62), supporting previous studies that there is high correlation between local electric field and cloud properties. With the use of extensive instrumentation at the site, such as the Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL), Ka-band Zenith Radar (KAZR), ceilometer, SKYRAD, Precipitation Imaging Package (PIP), among others, this study provides a more comprehensive examination of the diurnal cycle of cloud and precipitation properties along with the localized fair-weather return current of the larger Global Electric Circuit (GEC) system. Comparisons between the composite diurnal averaged fair-weather E z , and cloud thickness, maximum column backscatter, and precipitation particle counts all show similar diurnal variability during the polar night, indicating that during the largest magnitude fair weather E z time periods, clouds bases tend to be higher, clouds are thicker, have a larger column backscatter, and display more precipitating particles. Furthermore, a slight diurnal variability in the polar night surface temperature was found to be highly correlated (r = 0.87) to the longwave downwelling irradiance measured by SKYRAD, indicating that the variations in the physical properties of local clouds could modulate the diurnal polar night surface temperature variability on the order of 0.5 °C/day. In conclusion, these findings emphasize the importance and global nature of the GEC system, with the global aggregate of thunderstorms and electrified clouds potentially influencing polar night cloud properties as well as diurnal wintertime polar surface temperature variation.
Plant-based materials have the potential to replace some petroleum-based products, offering compostability and biodegradability as critical advantages. Xylan-rich biomass sources are gaining recognition due to their abundance and underutilization in current industrial applications. Research of potential xylan applications has been complicated by the complex and heterogeneous structure that varies for different xylan feedstocks. Acylation is a broadly used reaction in functionalization of polysaccharides at an industrial scale. However, the efficiency of this reaction varies with the xylan source. To optimize xylan valorization, a systematic understanding of structure–reactivity relationships is essential. This study explores, characterizes, and compares various xylan feedstocks in the acylation process. Xylan feedstocks were analyzed for their chemical composition, degree of polymerization, branching, solubility, and presence of impurities. These features were correlated with xylan glycotypes’ reactivity toward functionalization with succinic anhydride in an optimized DMSO/KOH condition, achieving carboxyl contents of up to 1.46. We used principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering to identify key structural features of xylan that promote its reactivity. Our findings reveal that xylans with higher xylose content and lower degrees of branching exhibit enhanced reactivity, achieving higher carboxyl content and yields. Structural analyses confirmed successful modification, and light scattering analyses showed dramatic changes in the solution properties. Succinylation improves the solubility and film-forming properties of native xylans. This study shows key structure–reactivity relationships in xylan succinylation, establishing that low branching, high xylose content, and reduced lignin impurity enhance chemical functionalization. The results offer a framework for selecting optimal biomass feedstocks and support future efforts in genetic and synthetic biology to design plants with tunable xylan architectures. These findings advance the hemicellulose valorization for applications in coatings and packaging.
Lithium fluoride (LiF) is a typical ionic solid, and at the same time a typical polymorphic (multi-phase) material. Its phase diagram contains two solid phases, B1 (rock salt) and B2 (CsCl), which are typical of ionic solids. The phase diagram of LiF was suggested by Smirnov. We have carried out extensive study of the properties of LiF using one of the most recent versions of VASP (Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package) which allows one to carry out calculations on ionic solids; more detail will be presented elsewhere.
The purpose of the package, called the high altitude radiation instrumentation system (HARIS), is to measure the radiation hazard to supersonic transport passengers from solar and galactic cosmic rays. The HARIS includes gaseous linear energy transfer spectrometer, a tissue equivalent ionization chamber, and a geiger meuller tube. The HARIS is flown on RB-57F aircraft at 60,000 feet. Data from the HARIS are reduced to give rad and rem dose rates measured by the package during the flights. Results presented include ambient data obtained on background flights, altitude comparison data, and solar flare data.
Resin systems for coating hybrids prior to hermetic sealing are described. The resin systems are a flexible silicone junction resin system and a flexible cycloaliphatic epoxy resin system. The coatings are intended for application to the hybrid after all the chips have been assembled and wire bonded, but prior to hermetic sealing of the package. The purpose of the coating is to control particulate contamination by immobilizing particles and by passivating the hybrid. Recommended process controls for the purpose of minimizing contamination in hybrid microcircuit packages are given. Emphasis is placed on those critical hybrid processing steps in which contamination is most likely to occur.
