Effect of Mach and Reynolds Numbers on the Power-Off Maximum Lift Coefficient Obtainable on a P-39N-1 Airplane as Determined in Flight

Flight tests were conducted on a Bell P-39N-1 airplane to determine the variation with Mach and Reynolds numbers of the maximum lift coefficient obtainable. The tests were made with the propeller in the constant-speed high-pitch setting and with the power off in order to minimize the effect of power and the propeller. The investigation covered a Mach number range of 0.146 to 0.655 and a Reynolds-number range of 4,900,000 to 17,100,000.The results of the investigation indicated that the maximum lift coefficient obtainable decreased markedly with an increase in Mach number for a given Reynolds number and exhibited a tendency to increase with an increase in Reynolds number for a given Mach number up to a Mach number of 0.55.

Effect of Silicon on Activity Coefficients of Siderophile Elements (P, Au, Pd, As, Ge, Sb, and In) in Liquid Fe, with Application to Core Formation

Earth's core contains approximately 10 percent light elements that are likely a combination of S, C, Si, and O, with Si possibly being the most abundant. Si dissolved into Fe liquids can have a large effect on the magnitude of the activity coefficient of siderophile elements (SE) in Fe liquids, and thus the partitioning behavior of those elements between core and mantle. The effect of Si can be small such as for Ni and Co, or large such as for Mo, Ge, Sb, As. The effect of Si on many siderophile elements is unknown yet could be an important, and as yet unquantified, influence on the core-mantle partitioning of SE. Here we report new experiments designed to quantify the effect of Si on the partitioning of P, Au, Pd, and many other SE between metal and silicate melt. The results will be applied to Earth, for which we have excellent constraints on the mantle siderophile element concentrations.

Emission Characteristics of A P and W Axially Staged Sector Combustor

Emission characteristics of a three-cup P and W Axially Controlled Stoichiometry (ACS) sector combustor are reported in this article. Multiple injection points and fuel staging strategies are used in this combustor design. Pilot-stage injectors are located on the front dome plate of the combustor, and main-stage injectors are positioned on the top and bottom of the combustor liners downstream. Low power configuration uses only pilot-stage injectors. Main-stage injectors are added to high power configuration to help distribute fuel more evenly and achieve overall lean burn yielding very low NOx emissions. Combustion efficiencies at four ICAO LTO conditions were all above 99%. Three EINOx emissions correlation equations were developed based on the experimental data to describe the NOx emission trends of this combustor concept. For the 7% and 30% engine power conditions, NOx emissions are obtained with the low power configuration, and the EINOx values are 6.16 and 6.81. The high power configuration was used to assess 85% and 100% engine power NOx emissions, with measured EINOx values of 4.58 and 7.45, respectively. The overall landing-takeoff cycle NOx emissions are about 12% relative to ICAO CAEP/6 level.

NOx Emissions Characteristics and Correlation Equations of Two P and W's Axially Staged Sector Combustors Developed Under NASA Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) Project

Two P&W (Pratt & Whitney)'s axially staged sector combustors have been developed under NASA's Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) project. One combustor was developed under ERA Phase I, and the other was developed under ERA Phase II. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions characteristics and correlation equations for these two sector combustors are reported in this article. The Phase I design was to optimize the NOx emissions reduction potential, while the Phase II design was more practical and robust. Multiple injection points and fuel staging strategies are used in the combustor design. Pilot-stage injectors are located on the front dome plate of the combustor, and main-stage injectors are positioned on the top and bottom (Phase I) or on the top only (Phase II) of the combustor liners downstream. Low power configuration uses only pilot-stage injectors. Main-stage injectors are added to high power configuration to help distribute fuel more evenly and achieve lean burn throughout the combustor yielding very low NOx emissions. The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) landing-takeoff NOx emissions are verified to be 88 percent (Phase I) and 76 percent (Phase II) under the ICAO CAEP/6 (Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection 6th Meeting) standard, exceeding the ERA project goal of 75 percent reduction, and the combustors proved to have stable combustion with room to maneuver on fuel flow splits for operability.

Self- and Air-Broadened Line Shapes in the 2v3 P and R Branches of 12CH4

In this paper we report line shape parameters of 12CH4 for several hundred 2V(sub 3) transitions in the spectral regions 5891-5996 cm( exp -1) (P branch) and 6015-6115 cm(exp -1) (R branch). Air- and self-broadening coefficients were measured as a function of temperature; line mixing via off-diagonal relaxation matrix element coefficients was also obtained for 47 transition pairs. In total, nearly 1517 positions and intensities were retrieved, but many transitions were too weak for the line shape study. For this analysis, we used 25 high-resolution (0.0056 and 0.0067 cm(ex[ -1) and high signal-to-noise (S/N) spectra of high-purity 12CH4 and the same high-purity 12CH4 broadened by dry air recorded at different sample temperatures between 130 K and 295 K with the Bruker IFS 125HR Fourier transform spectrometer at JPL. Three different absorption cells were used (1) a White cell set to a path length of 13.09 m for room temperature data, (2) a single-pass 0.2038 m long coolable cell (for self-broadening) and (3) a multipass cell with 20.941 m total path coolable Herriott cell (for air-broadening). In total there were 13 spectra with pure 12CH4 (0.27-599 Torr) and 12 air-broadened spectra with total sample pressures of 80-805 Torr and volume mixing ratios (VMR) of methane between 0.18 and 1.0. An interactive multispectrum nonlinear least-squares technique was employed to fit the individual P10-P1 and R0-R10 manifolds in all the spectra simultaneously. Results obtained from the present analysis are compared to other recent measurements.

Forest Structure Retrieval From EcoSAR P-Band Single-Pass Interferometry

EcoSAR is a single-pass (dual antenna) digital beamforming, P-band radar system that is designed for remote sensing of dense forest structure. Forest structure retrievals require the measurement related to the vertical dimension, for which several techniques have been developed over the years. These techniques use polarimetric and interferometric aspects of the SAR data, which can be collected using EcoSAR. In this paper we describe EcoSAR system in light of its interferometric capabilities and investigate forest structure retrieval techniques.

Single Conductor Alloy as Diffusion Barrier System and Simulataneous OHMIC Contact to N- and P-Type Silicon Carbide

Use of a single alloy conductor to form simultaneous ohmic contacts (SOC) to n- and p-type 4H-SiC. The single alloy conductor also is an effective diffusion barrier against gold (AU) and oxygen (O.sub.2) at high temperatures (e.g., up to 800.degree. C.). The innovation may also provide an effective interconnecting metallization in a multi-level metallization device scheme.

Magnetic Field Sensing with 4H SiC Diodes: N vs P Implantation

We explore the magnetic sensing capabilities of two 4H-SiC n+p diodes fabricated by NASA Glenn which only differ in the implanted ion species, nitrogen and phosphorus, and the implant activation annealing time. We use low- and high-field electrically detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) to investigate the defect structure used to sense magnetic fields as well as to evaluate the sensitivity. In addition, we expose these devices to high energy electron radiation to evaluate the defect sensing capability in a harsh radiation environment. The results from this work will allow us to tailor our processing methods to design a more optimal 4H-SiC pn diode for magnetic field sensing in harsh environments.

Spaceborne Applications of P-Band Imaging Radars for Measuring Forest Biomass

In three test sites of boreal and temperate forests, P-band polarimetric radar data estimate total above-ground dry woody biomass with 10 to 30 of the actual biomass values, depending on the complexity of the forest. A description and examples of the process are provided. The worldwide need for large scale, updated biomass estimates, achieved with a uniformly applied method, justifies a more in-depth exploration of long wavelength imaging radar applications for tropical forest inventories.

Joint retrieval of soil moisture and permafrost active layer thickness using L-band InSAR and P-band PolSAR

Seasonal subsidence measured by repeat-pass interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) can be used to infer the active layer thickness (ALT) in permafrost regions. The differential volume of soil water undergoing the phase change over the thaw season is one of the factors impacting the seasonal subsidence and is a function of both soil moisture profile and thaw depth. Without the information about soil moisture, this InSAR approach can have large biases in the ALT estimates when soil moisture profile is below saturation. Soil moisture and ALT can also be estimated from polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) backscatter observations but the sensing depth of the PolSAR approach is limited when deep ALT is present. In this paper, we integrated these two approaches and applied a joint retrieval method to estimate the soil moisture profiles and ALT from the L-band InSAR and P-band PolSAR data acquired over the Arctic-boreal region during the 2017 Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) airborne campaign.
