Proof-of-Principle Studies on Betatron-Oscillation Phase Tracking of a Single Electron (BOPTSE) in IOTA Run 3

We present a description and preliminary results of the proof-of-principle studies on betatron-oscillation phase tracking of a single electron in the Fermilab IOTA storage ring during Run 3 (2021). We describe the general principles of the experiment, the optical diagnostics setup, the configuration of the ring, a chronology of the studies, the structure of the measured data, and results of the preliminary analysis of the collected data. It was observed that the coherence time of betatron oscillations exceeds 60,000 turns. The betatron tune of the single electron was accurately measured and compared with that of electron bunches. In addition, chromaticity was extracted from the combined analysis of synchrotron oscillations and betatron phase tracking.

Bayesian Fit for the NOvA Three Flavor Oscillation Analysis

NOvA is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, using Fermilab's NuMI beam and a functionally identical near and far detector. NOvA measures muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance to probe neutrino oscillation parameters, including the large neutrino mixing angle, the mass ordering, and the CP-violating phase. NOvA has developed a Bayesian analysis in addition to its Frequentist analysis, using Markov Chain Monte Carlo. This Bayesian framework allows for measurements previously difficult to make with the Frequentist framework, such as the Jarlskog invariant and the reactor mixing angle. The details and status of the Bayesian Framework will be presented, as well as latest NOvA results on measurements of three-flavor oscillation parameters.

Evaluating the Effects of Detector Modeling Uncertainties on Sterile Neutrino Oscillation Analysis with the ICARUS Detector

he ICARUS T600 LArTPC detector was refurbished after an initial run at the underground LNGS labs and is currently taking data within its experimental hall at Fermilab after full commissioning. Regular data taking began in May 2021 with neutrinos from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) and the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) off-axis beam. As the far detector of the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program, the ICARUS detector's capability in searching for both muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance will allow for unprecedented sensitivity to light sterile neutrinos with eV-scale mass. The ultimate sensitivity of the detector to sterile neutrino oscillations depends on the understanding of the detector response and the uncertainties remaining after calibrating the detector model. This poster will review how detector-model-related uncertainties are quantified, evaluated and their impact on expected sterile neutrino oscillation sensitivities using the existing ICARUS data. The work pursued here is broadly applicable to other ICARUS analysis pathways such as neutrino-argon cross-sections and Beyond the Standard Model physics searches. It will finally discuss improvement pathways to reduce the systematic uncertainties to the level needed for the joint sterile neutrino oscillation analysis with the Short Baseline Near Detector (SBND) within the SBN Program.

Neutron-antineutron oscillation sensitivity study at DUNE

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) aims to measure neutrino oscillations as well as search for beyond the standard model physics such as baryon number violating (BNV) processes. DUNE will use a 70 kt Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) located more than 1 km underground. A promising BNV process is neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n \rightarrow \bar{n}$) which, if discovered, would offer unique insight into the baryon asymmetry of the universe. We are developing a classification algorithm that separates $n \rightarrow \bar{n}$ events from major background atmospheric neutrino interactions using DUNE far detector simulations. We will perform the classification of signals and backgrounds by analyzing key features such as the multiplicity, isotropy, and kinematics of the reconstructed events. In the future, this algorithm can be used to obtain the sensitivity of the DUNE detectors to the neutron-antineutron oscillation lifetime.

One such endeavor is the investigation of neutrino's invisible decay, a new focus of the NOvA experiment. Our primary objective is to assess the sensitivity of NOvA to detect invisible neutrino decay within oscillations. Furthermore, we aim to observe how this potential decay affects the probability of oscillation. For this poster we will present part of this research due is a project in progress.

Neutrino Oscillations at the NOvA Experiment

The NOvA experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments based at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in IL, USA. The experiment was designed to observe muon neutrino (muon anti-neutrino) disappearance and electron neutrino (electron anti-neutrino) appearance oscillations using a set of technological identical liquid scintillation detectors. The detectors are situated 14.6 milli-radians off-axis to the Fermilab's NuMI beam line that provides a beam of neutrinos (anti-neutrinos) to the experiment. The latest results from 3-flavor neutrino oscillation analysis from 10 years of NOvA data will be discussed in the talk.

Impact of the Earth’s Density Profile on Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations

As atmospheric neutrinos traverse the Earth, the matter potential influences their oscillation probabilities in intricate ways, enhancing and suppressing the conversion of one neutrino’s flavor to another along the propagation. Comprehending their behavior within Earth’s complex density profile, primarily described by the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM) [1], is essential for accurately describing oscillations and determining expected atmospheric neutrino event rates in the DUNE Far Detector. In this study, we address this challenge by considering an ensemble of Earth models constrained by astronomical measurements of the planet’s mass and moment of inertia. We evaluate how variations in densities and layer boundaries can affect oscillation probabilities and event rates, and what implications this could have on various physics analyses.

Neutrino Oscillation Results from the NOvA Experiment

The NOvA experiment is a long-baseline accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiment that uses the upgraded NuMI beam from Fermilab to measure electron-neutrino appearance and muon-neutrino disappearance between the Near Detector, located at Fermilab, and the Far Detector, located at Ash River, Minnesota. NOvA's primary physics goals include precision measurements of oscillation parameters, such as $\theta_{23}$ and the atmospheric mass-squared splitting, along with probes of the mass hierarchy and of the CP-violating phase. This talk will cover NOvA’s most recent three-flavor oscillation results, based on a neutrino beam exposure of 13.6E20 protons-on-target and an anti-neutrino beam exposure of 12.5E20 protons-on-target.

Neutron-antineutron oscillation search with MicroBooNE and DUNE

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international project aiming at neutrino physics and astrophysics and a search for phenomena predicted by theories beyond the standard model (BSM). The excellent imaging capability of Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) technology, particle tracking and identification utilized in the Far Detector, as well as the Far Detector size and underground placement, allow the experiment to achieve high sensitivity to various rare processes. BSM theories predict the existence of baryon number non-conservation effects, in particular when the baryon number changes by 2. Here we discuss the sensitivity of DUNE to neutron-antineutron oscillation. With full event simulation and reconstruction using the LArSoft package, we have investigated the background to potential signal events from atmospheric neutrino interactions and particle misidentification, and utilized machine learning techniques to enhance the discrimination between signal and background. The methodologies being developed for a high-sensitivity search for neutron-antineutron oscillation in DUNE can also be demonstrated with the currently running MicroBooNE LArTPC. We discuss progress on demonstrating the developed techniques with the first-ever search for neutron-antineutron oscillation in a LArTPC using MicroBooNE data.

Systematic Uncertainties of the NOvA Neutrino Oscillation Analysis

NOvA is a two detector long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment using Fermilab’s 700 kW NuMI muon neutrino beam. It studies the disappearance of muon (anti)neutrinos and the appearance of electron (anti)neutrinos in the beam over a distance of 810 km between the detectors. The observations can be used to constrain neutrino oscillation parameters: $\theta_{23}, \Delta m_{32}^2$ and $\delta_{CP}$ in the standard 3 active neutrinos paradigm. Although statistical uncertainties currently dominate in these measurements, understanding the major sources of systematic uncertainties and their correlations is vital for both the interpretation and precision of the results and also for further improvements of the analysis. This note presents details of the systematic uncertainties affecting NOvA's neutrino oscillation analysis results and how we evaluate them by generating systematically shifted predictions.

Parameter-Varying Hydrodynamic Model of a Single Vane in a Variable-Geometry Oscillating Surge Wave Energy Converter

This paper presents a preliminary study on the parameter-varying hydrodynamic modeling of an individual vane of a variable-geometry oscillating surge wave energy converter (VGOSWEC). The WEC design incorporates controlled surfaces that can modify their orientation relative to the wave motion, reducing hydrodynamic pressure and related loads. This research focuses on characterizing the behavior of the oscillating WEC using a simplified model and three methods for achieving a continuous parameter-varying model: coarse hydrodynamic parameters, interpolation of hydrodynamic parameters, and a fitting function. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of parameter-varying hydrodynamic effects in variable geometry oscillating WECs. The findings provide insights into the potential for reducing structural loads and improving the overall performance of such devices. Further research and development in this area could lead to advancements in WEC technologies, enabling their integration into the competitive energy market.

Deformed waveshape of quantum oscillation in magnetocaloric effect for layered organic superconductor.

Magnetocaloric effect for a layered organic superconductor beta ''-(BEDT-TTF)(2)SF5CH2CF2SO3 has been investigated. At low magnetic fields, a sinusoidal quantum oscillation, arising from a closed Fermi surface, is observed. As the field increases, the waveshape of the oscillation is strongly deformed and then sharp peaks emerge. The total energy including the Landau quantized states and the elastic energy of the leads holding the sample is calculated as a function of field strength and angle, and the minimum total energy, which determines the sample angle, is obtained as a function of field. The calculated results clarify that the deformation of the quantum oscillation is ascribed to a tilting effect of the sample by the magnetic torque.

Oscillation effects upon film boiling from a sphere.

Heat transfer rates from a silver-plated copper sphere, 0.75 in. in diameter, were studied by high speed photography during oscillations of the sphere in saturated liquid nitrogen and Freon-11. The oscillation frequencies ranged from zero to 13 Hz, and the amplitude-to-diameter ratio varied from zero to 2.67. The sphere was supported by a thin-walled stainless steel tube and carried a thermocouple attached near the lower stagnation point. A Fastax WF-3 16mm movie camera was used at about 2000 frames/sec. The differences in the vapor removal process at lower and higher oscillation frequencies are discussed.

On coherent oscillations of a string.

Vibrations of an elastic string when the separation between the ends varies randomly are studied. The emphasis is on the evolution of the coherent, or ordered, oscillations of the string. Using a perturbation technique borrowed from quantum field theory and the modified Kryloff-Bogoliuboff method, the 'multiple scattering' effect of the random separation between the ends on the linear and nonlinear coherent oscillations are investigated. It is found that due to the random interactions the coherent fundamental oscillation as well as the harmonies are damped. Their frequencies are also modified.

Flare triggering by coherent oscillations.

The coherent oscillations observed by Tanaka (1972) are shown to carry very high mechanical-energy fluxes of the order of 9.5 to 45 gigaergs/sq cm per sec. This energy can provide all of the energy expended in a large flare, or at least can be used to trigger a flare. The oscillations are assumed to be free modes of the sun, as described by Wolff (1972), and they are expected to be preferentially excited in the plages where large magnetic fields provide conditions favorable to rapid growth times. The energy driving the coherent oscillations may be derived from the flux deficit of sunspots in the plage.
