Experiments were carried out using a special engine with small glass windows and a stroboscope to record various aspects of engine performance. Valve position, supercharging, and torque recoil were all investigated with this experimental apparatus.
This report presents a clearer understanding of Helmholtz's work on the calculation of waves along the separation of two different liquids.
A general vector differential equation for the vorticity component parallel to a streamline is derived for steady, nonviscous, and incompressible flow in a rotating system. This equation is then simplified by restricting it to rotating radial channels and by making further simplifying assumptions. The simplified equation is used to solve for the secondary vorticity, the vorticity component parallel to the streamline, in three special cases involving different streamtube geometries; the results are presented in a series of figures. The secondary vorticity is shown to decrease with decreased absolute angular velocity of the fluid, decreased inlet total-pressure gradient, decreased length of relative flow path, and increased relative velocity.

Two graphical methods are presented for determining the stick-free neutral point, and they are extensions of the methods commonly used to determine the stick-free neutral point. A mathematical formula for computing the stick-free neutral point is also given. These methods may be applied to determine approximately the increase in tail size necessary to shift the neutral point (stick fixed or free) to any desired location on an airplane having inadequate longitudinal stability.

The properties of the solutions of the hydrodynamic equations of viscous fluid by "boundary-layer omission" are discussed. A method is indicated for the numerical determination of the solution for a known initial profile u(x(sub o),y) and pressure distribution p(x) within the region.
