Fast Ramping Accelerator Dipole Models for Fermilab’s Booster Upgrade and Muon Collider

The future discoveries in the field of High Energy Physics are led by the development of new types of accelerators. Around the world, there are a lot of researchers that are studying some possible designs for the future accelerators and some of them are considering the use of alternating current inside the superconducting magnets in order to have better efficiency. The work described in this report tries to compare some superconducting magnets made of different materials and to understand which one of them can be considered for its better performance working in a variable magnetic field. For this goal, becomes really important to control the temperature of the coil, and, as visible in the next chapter, to relate this parameter to the frequency of the magnetic field, in order to find, as will be named, the critical frequency .

MARTA’s (Muon Array with RPC for Tagging Air showers) DAQ system

The successful development of a low-power and standalone DAQ system to be used with RPCs is presented. These will be used to measure the muonic component of cosmic-ray’s air showers. The system includes a front-end, high voltage, detector monitoring and a Central Unit to manage the different components of the system. The front-end is based on the MAROC ASIC coupled to an FPGA respecting the strict demands of field operations in cosmic-ray experiments. Prototypes were produced and deployed, performing as expected. An engineering array will be installed at the Pierre Auger Observatory.

Muon to electron conversion search in the presence of Al nuclei at the Fermilab Mu2e experiment: Motivation, Design and Progress

The Mu2e experiment aims to find charged lepton flavor violation(CLFV) by measuring the monochromatic electrons from $\mu^- N\rightarrow e^- N$ conversion with an unprecedented single event sensitivity of $3 \times 10^{-17}$. When completed the experiment will improve the current limit by four orders of magnitude and make a previously unexplored phase space available for the search for beyond the standard model physics. Physics motivation for the experiment is discussed and design choices for the detectors and various sub systems are explained in this document. The construction of the Mu2e experiment is well underway and commissioning will begin in late 2022 with first data taking in late 2025 and 4-5 years of data taking thereafter to reach our goal.

From light neutrino decay phenomenology to muon neutrino cross-section measurement at MINERvA experiment

This thesis tackles two essential topics of neutrino physics: neutrino decay and neutrino cross-section measurement. First, the invisible and visible neutrino decay is analyzed through a phenomenological approach, considering future long-baseline neutrino experiments such as DUNE and a hypothetical neutrino beam toward the ANDES laboratory. The study takes into account the ν μ and ν e disappearance and appearance, respectively, for both FHC and RHC flux modes. The results showed a negligible matter effect for DUNE but significantly more notable at ANDES. At 90% C.L., the sensitivity to the decay parameter α3 can be as small as 2 × 10 -6 eV 2 for a chosen coupling. The impact of neutrino decay in the determination of θ 23 and δ CP were also shown. Second, the double-differential cross-section measurement for ν μ -carbon interactions with three-momentum transfer |$\vec{q}$| < 1.2 GeV obtained with medium energy exposures in the NuMI beam at MINERvA experiment are reported. The measurement is presented as a function of |$\vec{q}$| and E avail and reviews different interaction models and nuclear effects along quasi-elastic to resonance processes to define a new model for a better agreement. The double differential cross sections are compared to the MnvTunes, GENIE, and NuWro predictions.

Signals of a New Gauge Boson from IceCube and Muon $g-2$

A $Z'$ boson associated with a broken $U(1)_{L_{\mu} - L_{\tau}}$ gauge symmetry offers an economical solution to the long-standing $g_\mu-2$ anomaly, confirmed and strengthened by recent measurements at Fermilab. Here, we revisit the impact of such a $Z'$ on the spectrum of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, as measured by the IceCube experiment. This spectrum has been observed to exhibit a dip-like feature at $E_{\nu} \sim 0.2-1 \, {\rm PeV}$, which could plausibly arise from the physics of the sources themselves, but could also be the consequence of high-energy neutrinos resonantly scattering with the cosmic neutrino background, mediated by a $Z'$ with a mass on the order of $m_{Z'} \sim 10 \, {\rm MeV}$. In this study, we calculate the impact of such a $Z'$ on the high-energy neutrino spectrum for a variety of model parameters and source distributions. For couplings that can resolve the $g_{\mu}-2$ anomaly, we find that this model could self-consistently produce a spectral feature that is consistent with IceCube's measurement, in particular if the neutrinos observed by IceCube predominantly originate from high-redshift sources.

Measurement Of The Total Cross-Section Of Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Coherent Pion Production in NOvA Near Detector

Charged Current (CC) coherent neutrino-nucleus pion production is characterized by small momentum transferred to the nucleus, which is left in its ground state. Despite the relatively large uncertainties on the production cross-section, coherent production of mesons by neutrinos represents an important process, as it can shed light on the structure of the weak current and can also constitute a potential source of background for modern neutrino oscillation experiments and searches for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics. This Ph.D. thesis presents a new measurement of CC coherent pion production in the NOvA near detector at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). The analysis is based on the use of both particle identification and kinematic selection criteria based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to achieve a selection purity of 60%. Given the energy range 1-5 GeV accessible with the available NOvA exposure in the NuMI beam, the results will also be relevant for f uture neutrino experiments like the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE).
