Intersections of Disadvantaged Communities and Renewable Energy Potential: Analyses to Inform Equitable Investment Prioritization

Renewable energy development can bolster local economies through job creation, local tax revenues, and reduced energy costs; however, communities most in need of economic development and employment opportunities often see lower levels of renewable energy deployment. Megan Day and Liz Ross, along with their co-authors and supported by NREL's Sustainable Communities Catalyzer, identified areas where disadvantaged community indicators intersect with high potential for renewable energy deployment. Through a geospatial intersection of energy burden, environmental hazard, and sociodemographic data with the technical generation potential and levelized cost of energy for multiple renewable energy technologies, we identified trends across disadvantaged community indicators and renewable energy deployment potential. Combining metrics across several tools, including the State and Local Planning for Energy (SLOPE) platform, the Low-Income Energy Affordability (LEAD) tool, and the Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping (EJSCREEN) tool, we compiled a dataset that can be used to inform national- and state-level energy-related assistance programs, economic development efforts, and infrastructure programs seeking to prioritize investments in disadvantage communities.

Effects on the Sustainable Development Goals of Wood Pellet Production in the Southeastern United States

Wood-based pellets produced in the southeastern United States (SE US) and shipped overseas for the generation of heat and power support achievement of several of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and their targets. If improperly implemented, pellet supply chains, like most energy technologies, can have negative impacts on water and air quality, biodiversity, and other ecosystem services. Cooperation between regional and local industry partners and local communities as well as readily accessible information on environmental and societal effects of the industry are important for addressing sustainability goals. Strengths of this supply chain include replacement of fossil coal with bioenergy; support for renewable energy goals; conservation of forests through sustainable, green economy jobs; and more efficient use of waste materials.

X-composer: enabling cross-environments in-situ workflows between HPC and cloud

As large-scale scientific simulations and big data analyses become more popular, it is increasingly more expensive to store huge amounts of raw simulation results to perform post-analysis. To minimize the expensive data I/O, "in-situ" analysis is a promising approach, where data analysis applications analyze the simulation generated data on the fly without storing it first. However, it is challenging to organize, transform, and transport data at scales between two semantically different ecosystems due to the distinct software and hardware difference. To tackle these challenges, we design and implement the X-Composer framework. X-Composer connects cross-ecosystem applications to form an "in-situ" scientific workflow, and provides a unified approach and recipe for supporting such hybrid in-situ workflows on distributed heterogeneous resources. X-Composer reorganizes simulation data as continuous data streams and feeds them seamlessly into the Cloud-based stream processing services to minimize I/O overheads. For evaluation, we use X-Composer to set up and execute a cross-ecosystem workflow, which consists of a parallel Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation running on HPC, and a distributed Dynamic Mode Decomposition analysis application running on Cloud. Our experimental results show that X-Composer can seamlessly couple HPC and Big Data jobs in their own native environments, achieve good scalability, and provide high-fidelity analytics for ongoing simulations in real-time.

Evolution of HEP Processing Frameworks

HEP data-processing software must support the disparate physics needs of many experiments. For both collider and neutrino environments, HEP experiments typically use data-processing frameworks to manage the computational complexities of their large-scale data processing needs. Data-processing frameworks are being faced with new challenges this decade. The computing landscape has changed from the past three decades of homogeneous single-core x86 batch jobs running on grid sites. Frameworks must now work on a heterogeneous mixture of different platforms: multi-core machines, different CPU architectures, and computational accelerators; and different computing sites: grid, cloud, and high-performance computing. We describe these challenges in more detail and how frameworks may confront them. Given their historic success, frameworks will continue to be critical software systems that enable HEP experiments to meet their computing needs. Frameworks have weathered computing revolutions in the past; they will do so again with support from the HEP community

America's Strategy to Secure the Supply Chain for a Robust Clean Energy Transition Factsheet

Demand for clean energy technologies such as wind turbines and batteries for electric vehicles has increased significantly as technology costs have plummeted over the last decade and countries seek to diversify their energy systems with more reliable clean energy sources to lower costs for businesses and consumers. The global clean energy market is expected to grow exponentially — reaching $23 trillion at a minimum by 2030. Without new domestic raw materials production and manufacturing capacity, the U.S. will continue to rely on clean energy imports, exposing the nation to supply chain vulnerabilities while simultaneously losing out on the enormous job opportunities associated with the energy transition. Yet, in many cases, the United States has untapped potential to support greater domestic production.

Achieving American Leadership in the Grid Storage Supply Chain Factsheet

To meet growing demand for long duration energy storage, domestic manufacturing will have to increase significantly. The use of renewables is rapidly increasing, and the adaption of electric vehicles is on the rise, which will require the national grid to not only produce and deliver electricity, but also store it reliably and cost-effectively. The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently released a report showing that to reach a goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, grid storage will need to grow to almost 2,500 gigawatt hours (GWh) in less than a decade. Currently, across the globe, battery technologies provide over 30 GWh of grid storage(BloombergNEF, 2020) while pumped storage hydropower (PSH)provides 160 gigawatts (GW) of long-duration energy storage (LDES) (PSH) (U.S. Department of Energy, 2020). This fact sheet summarizes strategies to address key vulnerabilities in the grid storage supply chain, the United States. These strategies include: • Developing domestic, sustainable manufacturing and recycling capabilities along the energy storage supply chain. • Maximizing the use of domestic resources by focusing on second-life and recycling technologies. • Enabling the diversification and deployment of grid storage technologies through targeted research activities. Addressing these opportunities will have significant impacts with respect to increasing well-paying skilled domestic jobs, improving the gross domestic product (GDP), and ensuring minimal environmental and climate impacts.

PV Hosting Capacity Estimation: Experiences with Scalable Framework; Preprint

Hosting capacity is an indication of the amount of photovoltaics (PV) can be hosted in a distribution system. This paper presents a framework for estimating distributed PV hosting capacity at scale. We first analyze the key challenges of performing relevant large scale simulation including computational and modeling challenges. Then, we develop two python-based software tools in order to conduct repeatable distribution analyses: Distribution Integration Solution Cost Options (DISCO) for configuring and analyzing simulations, and JADE for parallelizing jobs on HPC clusters. A case study of hosting capacity estimation for SMART-DS SFO 2000+ synthetic feeders is used to demonstrate the capability of the developed framework and tools. The framework and tools can help utilities assess the overall hosting capacity of their service territory, through which the overall upgrade cost can be better planned in order to integrate more PV in the future.

We sought to identify areas where indicators of disadvantaged communities intersect with high generation potential from cost- effective renewable energy opportunities. This presentation highlights the geospatial intersection of the technical potential and levelized cost of energy for three renewable technologies (residential solar, utility solar, and land-based wind) and three sociodemographic metrics (energy burden, unemployment, and employment in mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction). This research and the associated county-level data set are intended to inform national- and state-level energy-related assistance programs, economic development efforts, and infrastructure programs seeking to prioritize investments in disadvantaged communities.
