Improved silicon nitride for advanced heat engines

The results of a four year program to improve the strength and reliability of injection-molded silicon nitride are summarized. Statistically designed processing experiments were performed to identify and optimize critical processing parameters and compositions. Process improvements were monitored by strength testing at room and elevated temperatures, and microstructural characterization by optical, scanning electron microscopes, and scanning transmission electron microscope. Processing modifications resulted in a 20 percent strength and 72 percent Weibull slope improvement of the baseline material. Additional sintering aids screening and optimization experiments succeeded in developing a new composition (GN-10) capable of 581.2 MPa at 1399 C. A SiC whisker toughened composite using this material as a matrix achieved a room temperature toughness of 6.9 MPa m(exp .5) by the Chevron notched bar technique. Exploratory experiments were conducted on injection molding of turbocharger rotors.

Probabilistic load simulation: Code development status

The objective of the Composite Load Spectra (CLS) project is to develop generic load models to simulate the composite load spectra that are included in space propulsion system components. The probabilistic loads thus generated are part of the probabilistic design analysis (PDA) of a space propulsion system that also includes probabilistic structural analyses, reliability, and risk evaluations. Probabilistic load simulation for space propulsion systems demands sophisticated probabilistic methodology and requires large amounts of load information and engineering data. The CLS approach is to implement a knowledge based system coupled with a probabilistic load simulation module. The knowledge base manages and furnishes load information and expertise and sets up the simulation runs. The load simulation module performs the numerical computation to generate the probabilistic loads with load information supplied from the CLS knowledge base.

Probabilistic evaluation of SSME structural components

The application is described of Composite Load Spectra (CLS) and Numerical Evaluation of Stochastic Structures Under Stress (NESSUS) family of computer codes to the probabilistic structural analysis of four Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) space propulsion system components. These components are subjected to environments that are influenced by many random variables. The applications consider a wide breadth of uncertainties encountered in practice, while simultaneously covering a wide area of structural mechanics. This has been done consistent with the primary design requirement for each component. The probabilistic application studies are discussed using finite element models that have been typically used in the past in deterministic analysis studies.

Expert system development for probabilistic load simulation

A knowledge based system LDEXPT using the intelligent data base paradigm was developed for the Composite Load Spectra (CLS) project to simulate the probabilistic loads of a space propulsion system. The knowledge base approach provides a systematic framework of organizing the load information and facilitates the coupling of the numerical processing and symbolic (information) processing. It provides an incremental development environment for building generic probabilistic load models and book keeping the associated load information. A large volume of load data is stored in the data base and can be retrieved and updated by a built-in data base management system. The data base system standardizes the data storage and retrieval procedures. It helps maintain data integrity and avoid data redundancy. The intelligent data base paradigm provides ways to build expert system rules for shallow and deep reasoning and thus provides expert knowledge to help users to obtain the required probabilistic load spectra.

The electrodynamic and hydrodynamic phenomena in magnetically-levitated molten droplets. I - Steady state behavior

A mathematical formulation is given and computed results are presented describing the behavior of electromagnetically-levitated metal droplets under the conditions of microgravity. In the formulation the electromagnetic force field is calculated using a modification of the volume integral method and these results are then combined with the FIDAP code to calculate the steady state melt velocities. The specific computational results are presented for the conditions corresponding to the planned IML-2 Space Shuttle experiment, using the TEMPUS device, which has separate 'heating' and 'positioning' coils. While the computed results are necessarily specific to the input conditions, some general conclusions may be drawn from this work. These include the fact that for the planned TEMPUS experiments to positioning coils will produce only a weak melt circulation, while the heating coils are like to produce a mildly turbulent recirculating flow pattern within the samples. The computed results also allow us to assess the effect of sample size, material properties and the applied current on these phenomena.

Improving the numerical integration solution of satellite orbits in the presence of solar radiation pressure using modified back differences

The method of modified back differences, a technique that significantly reduces the numerical integration errors associated with crossing shadow boundaries using a fixed-mesh multistep integrator without a significant increase in computer run time, is presented. While Hubbard's integral approach can produce significant improvements to the trajectory solution, the interpolation method provides the best overall results. It is demonstrated that iterating on the point mass term correction is also important for achieving the best overall results. It is also shown that the method of modified back differences can be implemented with only a small increase in execution time.

The high-energy transient experiment (HETE) - An international multiwavelength mission

The High Energy Transient Experiment (HETE), an international mission scheduled by NASA for launch on a Pegasus rocket in July 1994, is described. The prime objective of HETE is to carry out the first multiwavelength study of gamma-ray bursts with UV, X-ray, and gamma-ray instruments mounted on a single, compact spacecraft. A unique feature of the HETE mission is its capability to localize GRBs with about 10 arc second accuracy, in near real time aboard the spacecraft, and to transmit these positions directly to a network of receivers at existing ground-based observatories, enabling rapid, sensitive follow-up studies in the radio, IR, and optical bands.

Temperature and size variabilities of the Western Pacific Warm Pool

Variabilities in sea-surface temperature and size of the Western Pacific Warm Pool were tracked with 10 years of satellite multichannel sea-surface temperature observations from 1982 to 1991. The results show that both annual mean sea-surface temperature and the size of the warm pool increased from 1983 to 1987 and fluctuated after 1987. Possible causes of these variations include solar irradiance variabilities, El Nino-Southern Oscillaton events, volcanic activities, and global warming.

Fracture toughness of advanced ceramics at room temperature

Results of round-robin fracture toughness tests on advanced ceramics are reported. A gas-pressure silicon nitride and a zirconia-toughened alumina were tested using three test methods: indentation fracture, indentation strength, and single-edge precracked beam. The latter two methods have produced consistent results. The interpretation of fracture toughness test results for the zirconia alumina composite is shown to be complicated by R-curve and environmentally assisted crack growth phenomena.

Numerical analysis of the Iosipescu specimen for composite materials

A finite element analysis of the Iosipescu shear tests for unidirectional and cross-ply composites is presented. It is shown that an iterative analysis procedure must be used to model the fixture-specimen kinematics. The correction factors which are needed to compensate for the nonuniformity of stress distribution in calculating shear modulus are shown to be dependent on the material orthotropic ratio and the finite element loading models. Test section strain distributions representative of typical graphite-epoxy specimens are also presented.

M.I.T. Stirling-cycle heat transfer apparatus

The design and construction of a two-cylinder apparatus to measure heat transfer under conditions of oscillating pressure and oscillating flow such as found in Stirling-cycle machines are described. The apparatus consists of two large single-stage air compressors joined by a rigid drive shaft between the two crack shafts, and is powered by a 25-hp variable speed DC motor. The apparatus is capable of measuring heat transfer while velocity and pressure change over the range of dimensionless parameters normally found in Stirling cycle machines. It allows each parameter to be varied independently and easily. Instrumentation for the apparatus is adequate for measurement of pressure, time, gas and wall temperature, wall heat flux, and gas velocity. It yields preliminary data which show that the apparatus and data acquisition are operating satisfactorily and produce reasonable results.

A circumstellar molecular gas structure associated with the massive young star Cepheus A-HW 2

We report the detection via VLA-D observations of ammonia of a circumstellar high-density molecular gas structure toward the massive young star related to the object Cepheus A-HW 2, a firm candidate for the powering source of the high-velocity molecular outflow in the region. We suggest that the circumstellar molecular gas structure could be related to the circumstellar disk previously suggested from infrared, H2O, and OH maser observations. We consider as a plausible scenario that the double radio continuum source of HW 2 could represent the ionized inner part of the circumstellar disk, in the same way as proposed to explain the double radio source in L1551. The observed motions in the circumstellar molecular gas can be produced by bound motions (e.g., infall or rotation) around a central mass of about 10-20 solar masses (B0.5 V star or earlier).

HW Virginis - A short period eclipsing binary containing an sdB star

Simultaneous photometry of the binary star HW Vir, a detached system with an orbital period of 2 h 48 min is described. The new UBVR light curves obtained using the Wilson-Devinney code are found to constrain the orbital inclination of the system within the narrow range of 80.6 +/-0.2 deg. The temperature of the primary star is between 29,000 and 36,000 K, and the temperature of the secondary star is near 3,700 K. The possible masses and radii of the two stars are calculated using the published amplitude of the radial velocity curve of the primary star, 87.9 +/-4.8 km/s. It is found that, for the primary star log g1 is greater than 4.8 and less than or equal to 5.8. From the temperature and gravity of the primary star, its distance is found to be in the range between 42 and 151 pc. It is suggested that the system will begin mass transfer when the orbital period has decreased enough to bring the secondary star into contact with its Roche lobe.

New parameterizations and sensitivities for simple climate models

This paper presents a reexamination of the earth radiation budget parameterization of energy balance climate models in light of data collected over the last 12 years. The study consists of three parts: (1) an examination of the infrared terrestrial radiation to space and its relationship to the surface temperature field on time scales from 1 month to 10 years; (2) an examination of the albedo of the earth with special attention to the seasonal cycle of snow and clouds; (3) solutions for the seasonal cycle using the new parameterizations with special attention to changes in sensitivity. While the infrared parameterization is not dramatically different from that used in the past, the albedo in the new data suggest that a stronger latitude dependence be employed. After retuning the diffusion coefficient the simulation results for the present climate generally show only a slight dependence on the new parameters. Also, the sensitivity parameter for the model is still about the same (1.25 C for a 1 percent increase of solar constant) for the linear models and for the nonlinear models that include a seasonal snow line albedo feedback (1.34 C). One interesting feature is that a clear-sky planet with a snow line albedo feedback has a significantly higher sensitivity (2.57 C) due to the absence of smoothing normally occurring in the presence of average cloud cover.

Expert systems for automated maintenance of a Mars oxygen production system

Application of expert system concepts to a breadboard Mars oxygen processor unit have been studied and tested. The research was directed toward developing the methodology required to enable autonomous operation and control of these simple chemical processors at Mars. Failure detection and isolation was the key area of concern, and schemes using forward chaining, backward chaining, knowledge-based expert systems, and rule-based expert systems were examined. Tests and simulations were conducted that investigated self-health checkout, emergency shutdown, and fault detection, in addition to normal control activities. A dynamic system model was developed using the Bond-Graph technique. The dynamic model agreed well with tests involving sudden reductions in throughput. However, nonlinear effects were observed during tests that incorporated step function increases in flow variables. Computer simulations and experiments have demonstrated the feasibility of expert systems utilizing rule-based diagnosis and decision-making algorithms.

Observation of a two-vibron bound-to-unbound transition in solid deuterium at high pressure

We have observed a two-vibron bound-to-unbound transition in solid D2 by Raman scattering at a pressure of 34(2) GPa. We investigated the transition by increasing the vibron bandwidth, through the application of pressure, until it dominated the intramolecular anharmonicity. We present an analysis of a simple Hamiltonian that gives the experimental bivibron binding energy and the critical bandwidth-to-anharmonicity ratio. Our results indicate that while the vibron bandwidth increases markedly with pressure, the anharmonicity remains constant.
