Feeding man in space

Semi-solid, dehydrated, rehydratable, thermally stabilized wet, and intermediate moisture food development for space flights

Waveguide excited dielectric spheres as feeds.

The results of experiments with dielectric obstacles of various geometries placed directly upon the apertures of circular and rectangular waveguides are presented. It is found that dielectric spheres, and in some instances dielectric cubes, two to four wavelengths in dimension produce directive patterns with low sidelobe levels. For some cross sections, the measured gain of these antennas is greater (6 dB in some cases) than that produced by optimum horns having apertures of identical cross section. The linearity of the polarization of these antennas is essentially the same as that of an open-end waveguide antenna.

Solute rejection by porous glass membranes. I - Hyperfiltration of sodium chloride and urea feed solutions.

Hyperfiltration of sodium chloride and urea was studied with porous glass membranes in closed-end capillary form, to determine the effect of pressure, temperature, and concentration variations, and lifetime rejection and flux characteristics. Rejection data for sodium chloride were consistent with the functioning of the porous glass as a low-capacity ion-exchange membrane.

Vibration resistance of the wire-feed mechanism of a magnetic recording apparatus

The effects of external mechanical and climatic actions on the efficient operation of magnetic tape recording equipment are analyzed. The efficiency and reliability of the recording system are determined by the structural parameters and the characteristics of the individual elements of the transport mechanism circuit. The resistance of tape recording equipment to the effects of vibration is considered essential for reliable operations. Methods for insuring reliable tape transport and recording action are discussed.

Flight feeding systems design and evaluation

The Apollo flight menu design is fully recounted for Apollo missions 7 through 17, to show modifications that were introduced to the Apollo food system, to document the range of menus and nutritional quality, and to describe packaging and preparation procedures for each class of food item. Papers concerning the Apollo 14 food system, and nutrition systems for pressure suits are included, and the following special topics are treated in depth: (1) food handling procedures; (2) modification of the physical properties of freeze dried rice; (3) stabilization of aerospace food waste; and (4) identification and quantitation of hexadecanal and octadecanal in broiler muscle phospholipids.
