Shuttle bit rate synchronizer

A shuttle bit rate synchronizer brassboard unit was designed, fabricated, and tested, which meets or exceeds the contractual specifications. The bit rate synchronizer operates at signal-to-noise ratios (in a bit rate bandwidth) down to -5 dB while exhibiting less than 0.6 dB bit error rate degradation. The mean acquisition time was measured to be less than 2 seconds. The synchronizer is designed around a digital data transition tracking loop whose phase and data detectors are integrate-and-dump filters matched to the Manchester encoded bits specified. It meets the reliability (no adjustments or tweaking) and versatility (multiple bit rates) of the shuttle S-band communication system through an implementation which is all digital after the initial stage of analog AGC and A/D conversion.

Augmented burst-error correction for UNICON laser memory

A single-burst-error correction system is described for data stored in the UNICON laser memory. In the proposed system, a long fire code with code length n greater than 16,768 bits was used as an outer code to augment an existing inner shorter fire code for burst error corrections. The inner fire code is a (80,64) code shortened from the (630,614) code, and it is used to correct a single-burst-error on a per-word basis with burst length b less than or equal to 6. The outer code, with b less than or equal to 12, would be used to correct a single-burst-error on a per-page basis, where a page consists of 512 32-bit words. In the proposed system, the encoding and error detection processes are implemented by hardware. A minicomputer, currently used as a UNICON memory management processor, is used on a time-demanding basis for error correction. Based upon existing error statistics, this combination of an inner code and an outer code would enable the UNICON system to obtain a very low error rate in spite of flaws affecting the recorded data.

Some long, rate one-half, binary convolutional codes with an optimum distance profile and the systematic versus nonsystematic code question

A tabulation is given of long systematic and long quick-look-in (QLI) nonsystematic rate R = 1/2 binary convolutional codes with an optimum distance profile (ODP). These codes appear attractive for use with sequential decoders. Simulations for two of the new codes are reported and confirm Massey's conjecture that systematic and non-systematic codes of the same rate yield nearly identical computational and error probability performance with sequential decoding when the number of digits transmitted in the tail of the encoded frame is the same for both codes.

Study and response time for the visual recognition of 'similarity' and identity

Four subjects compared successively presented pairs of line patterns for a match between any lines in the pattern (similarity) and for a match between all lines (identity). The encoding or study times for pattern recognition from immediate memory and the latency in responses to comparison stimuli were examined. Qualitative differences within and between subjects were most evident in study times.

Coding/modulation trade-offs for Shuttle wideband data links

This paper describes various modulation and coding schemes which are potentially applicable to the Shuttle wideband data relay communications link. This link will be capable of accommodating up to 50 Mbps of scientific data and will be subject to a power constraint which forces the use of channel coding. Although convolutionally encoded coherent binary PSK is the tentative signal design choice for the wideband data relay link, FM techniques are of interest because of the associated hardware simplicity and because an FM system is already planned to be available for transmission of television via relay satellite to the ground. Binary and M-ary FSK are considered as candidate modulation techniques, and both coherent and noncoherent ground station detection schemes are examined. The potential use of convolutional coding is considered in conjunction with each of the candidate modulation techniques.

The TWERLE balloon-to-satellite data transmitting system

This paper describes the balloon instrumentation system which provides the one-way link for data gathering and navigation in the Tropical Wind, Energy conversion and Reference Level Experiment (TWERLE). In this experiment, 400 instrumented constant-level balloons will be launched at the southern hemisphere during 1975. The Random Access Measurement System (RAMS) on board the Nimbus-F satellite, will comprise the receiving end of the link. The data encoder, stable oscillator, transmitter and antenna are described, as well as two supporting components, the power source and the magnetic cutdown. These six items weigh 850 g. The oscillator-transmitter consume 1.9 W dc power to provide 0.6 W phase modulated RF power.

A multichannel biotelemetry transmitter utilizing a PCM subcarrier

Making use of the currently available integrated circuits, a miniature PCM telemetry system operating from one miniature 9-volt battery and drawing less than 5 milliamps has been constructed. The use of this PCM telemetry signal not only provides accurate data transmission, but requires a minimum of RF bandwidth. The serial format that results from multiplexing the input data allows the use of a single channel recorder with its cost savings over a multichannel tape recorder. An additional benefit of the PCM encoding is that the data is in digital format and is directly suitable for computer use.

Frame sync acquisition for biorthogonally coded data

The paper analyzes the optimum frame-synchronization problem for biorthogonally coded data received over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and decoded prior to sync acquisition. In deriving the optimum frame-sync algorithm, the discussion is restricted to the case in which each frame contains F complete code words, including a frame-sync prefix of P complete code words. The k-bit source words and k-bit decoded words are regarded as super symbols from an alphabet of binary k-tuples. The biorthogonal encoder, the AWGN channel, and the decoder are lumped into a super symbol channel whose characteristics determine the form of the optimum frame-sync decision rule. A union-bound approach is used to provide a quantitative measure of the probability of false synchronization for the algorithm derived.

An integrated PCM data system for full scale aeronautics testing

An integrated PCM data system is being developed at Ames Research Center to gather test data on advanced STOL propulsive lift, VTOL, rotary wing, and V/STOL control systems concepts as they pass through wind-tunnel, test-stand, flight-simulator and flight-test phases. Identical airborne signal conditioning and PCM encoding is used on test aircraft and wind tunnel models. An 80,000 word/second PCM installation will be the first all PCM-instrumented rotary wing development project. The system uses both dedicated and time-shared computers for fast data analysis with maximum use of resources. This system development shows one way to bring separate data user groups together over a common data base, while sharing computing resources for minimum cost.-

Optimal source codes for geometrically distributed integer alphabets

An approach is shown for using the Huffman algorithm indirectly to prove the optimality of a code for an infinite alphabet if an estimate concerning the nature of the code can be made. Attention is given to nonnegative integers with a geometric probability assignment. The particular distribution considered arises in run-length coding and in encoding protocol information in data networks. Questions of redundancy of the optimal code are also investigated.

Short constraint length rate 1/2 'quick-look' codes

Quick-look nonsystematic convolutional codes have the property that the information sequence may be recovered from the encoded sequence in straightforward fashion and with a minimum of error amplification. In this concise paper we investigate their relevant characteristics for constraint lengths less than eight and rate 1/2 and obtain a number of interesting and practically useful results. In particular, for the best of these codes, we derive their free distance and error amplification, their decoded bit error probability when used over the binary symmetric channel in conjunction with Viterbi decoding, and show how they can be employed to measure the channel bit error rate.

Digital TV processing system

Two digital video data compression systems directly applicable to the Space Shuttle TV Communication System were described: (1) For the uplink, a low rate monochrome data compressor is used. The compression is achieved by using a motion detection technique in the Hadamard domain. To transform the variable source rate into a fixed rate, an adaptive rate buffer is provided. (2) For the downlink, a color data compressor is considered. The compression is achieved first by intra-color transformation of the original signal vector, into a vector which has lower information entropy. Then two-dimensional data compression techniques are applied to the Hadamard transformed components of this last vector. Mathematical models and data reliability analyses were also provided for the above video data compression techniques transmitted over a channel encoded Gaussian channel. It was shown that substantial gains can be achieved by the combination of video source and channel coding.

Shared memory for a fault-tolerant computer

A system is described for sharing a memory in a fault-tolerant computer. The memory is under the direct control and monitoring of error detecting and error diagnostic units in the fault-tolerant computer. This computer verifies that data to and from the memory is legally encoded and verifies that words read from the memory at a desired address are, in fact, actually delivered from that desired address. The means are provided for a second processor, which is independent of the direct control and monitoring of the error checking and diagnostic units of the fault-tolerant computer, and to share the memory of the fault-tolerant computer. Circuitry is included to verify that: (1) the processor has properly accessed a desired memory location in the memory; (2) a data word read-out from the memory is properly coded; and (3) no inactive memory was erroneously outputting data onto the shared memory bus.
