Fine‐Tuning Alkyl Chains on Quinoxaline Nonfullerene Acceptors Enables High‐Efficiency Ternary Organic Solar Cells with Optimizing Molecular Stacking and Reducing Energy Loss

Abstract Material design of guest acceptor is always a big challenge for improving the efficiency of ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, a pair of isomeric nonfullerene acceptors based on quinoxaline core, Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O and Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O, is designed and synthesized. By moving the alkoxy chain attached on side phenyl frommeta‐position topara‐position, both π–π stacking distance and crystallinity are enhanced simultaneously. They obtain the uplifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. Compared to Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O, Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O exhibits wider absorption spectrum and higher extinction coefficient. Using D18‐Cl:N3 as host materials, the addition of guest acceptor Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O significantly improves the power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 17.61% to 18.49% because of higher open‐circuit voltage (0.875 V) and short‐circuit current density (27.85 mA cm −2 ). This can be attributed to the faster exciton dissociation, more balanced carrier mobility, fine fiber morphology, and lower energy loss in the ternary devices. However, Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O‐based ternary device achieves relatively low PCE of 17.17% because this device shows extremely low electron mobility. The results indicate that molecular stacking, film morphology, etc., can be effectively modulated by fine‐tuning the side chains of guest materials, which may be an effective design rule for further improving the PCE of OSCs.

Construction of a Pt‐CeO x Interface for the Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract The creation of metal‐metal oxide interfaces is an important approach to fine‐tuning catalyst properties through strong interfacial interactions. This article presents the work on developing interfaces between Pt and CeO x that improve Pt surface energetics for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) within an alkaline electrolyte. The Pt‐CeO x interfaces are formed by depositing size‐controlled Pt nanoparticles onto a carbon support already coated with ultrathin CeO x nanosheets. This interface structure facilitates substantial electron transfer from Pt to CeO x , resulting in decreased hydrogen binding energies on Pt surfaces, and water dissociation for the HER, as predicted by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Electrochemical testing indicates that both Pt specific activity and mass activity are improved by a factor of 2 to 3 following the formation of Pt‐CeO x interfaces. This study underscores the significance and potential of harnessing robust interfacial effects to enhance electrocatalytic reactions.

Tailored Additive Design of Scaffold‐Free Porous Mg for Ultimate Hydrogen Storage

For hydrogen storage materials to become practically viable, comprehensive improvements in key properties—kinetics, thermodynamics, thermal transport, and durability—are crucial. Porous Mg structure has been proposed as a promising strategy due to its high storage capacity and ability to accommodate volume expansion. However, challenges such as sluggish kinetics and structural degradation resulting from instability due to vacant sites still remain. In this study, a tailored design of porous Mg structure with site-specific transition metal dual-doping and structure-reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT)-framework is presented for optimal hydrogen storage. Ti and Ni are strategically deposited on the surface to synergistically enhance hydrogen sorption kinetics by facilitating hydrogen dissociation and diffusion, while CNTs are interpenetrated into 3D Mg structure for improving thermal conductivity and maintaining the porous structure. The resulting composite demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving hydrogen absorption and desorption of 4.8 and 5.8 wt%, respectively, within 10 min with an impressively low activation energy for absorption of 46 kJ mol −1 H 2 . Even after 50 cycles, its capacity and porous structure are well preserved, showing excellent cyclability in comparison with previously reported materials. In conclusion, this delicate design strategy based on a comprehensive understanding of structural and chemical characteristics is key to maximizing the targeted performance.

A Library of Atomically Thin 2D Materials Featuring the Conductive-Point Resistive Switching Phenomenon

Non-volatile resistive switching (NVRS) is a widely available effect in transitional metal oxides, colloquially known as memristors, and of broad interest for memory technology and neuromorphic computing. Until recently, NVRS was not known in other transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), an important material class owing to their atomic thinness enabling the ultimate dimensional scaling. Here, various monolayer or few-layer 2D materials are presented in the conventional vertical structure that exhibit NVRS, including TMDs (MX 2 , M = transitional metal, e.g., Mo, W, Re, Sn, or Pt; X = chalcogen, e.g., S, Se, or Te), TMD heterostructure (WS2/MoS2), and an atomically thin insulator (h-BN). These results indicate the universality of the phenomenon in 2D non-conductive materials, and feature low switching voltage, large ON/OFF ratio, and forming-free characteristic. A dissociation–diffusion–adsorption model is proposed, attributing the enhanced conductance to metal atoms/ions adsorption into intrinsic vacancies, a conductive-point mechanism supported by first-principle calculations and scanning tunneling microscopy characterizations. Our results motivate further research in the understanding and applications of defects in 2D materials.

Zero-Valent Palladium Single-Atoms Catalysts Confined in Black Phosphorus for Efficient Semi-Hydrogenation

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) represent a new frontier in heterogeneous catalysis due to their remarkable catalytic properties and maximized atomic utilization. However, single atoms often bond to the support with polarized electron density and thus exhibit a high valence state, limiting their catalytic scopes in many chemical transformations. In this study, it is demonstrated that 2D black phosphorus (BP) acts as giant phosphorus (P) ligand to confine a high density of single atoms (e.g., Pd 1 , Pt 1 ) via atomic layer deposition. Unlike other 2D materials, BP with relatively low electronegativity and buckled structure favors the strong confinement of robust zero-valent palladium SACs in the vacancy site. Metallic Pd 1 /BP SAC shows a highly selective semi-hydrogenation of phenylacetylene toward styrene, distinct from metallic Pd nanoparticles that facilitate the formation of fully hydrogenated products. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Pd atom forms covalent-like bonding with adjacent P atoms, wherein H atoms tend to adsorb, aiding the dissociative adsorption of H 2 . Zero-valent Pd in the confined space favors a larger energy gain for the synthesis of partially hydrogenated product over the fully hydrogenated one. This work provides a new route toward the synthesis of zero-valent SACs on BP for organic transformations.

Powering ≈50 µm Motion by a Molecular Event in DNA Crystals

A major challenge in material design is to couple nanoscale molecular and supramolecular events into desired chemical, physical, and mechanical properties at the macroscopic scale. Here, a novel self-assembled DNA crystal actuator is reported, which has reversible, directional expansion and contraction for over 50 μm in response to versatile stimuli, including temperature, ionic strength, pH, and redox potential. The macroscopic actuation is powered by cooperative dissociation or cohesion of thousands of DNA sticky ends at the designed crystal contacts. The increase in crystal porosity and cavity in the expanded state dramatically enhances the crystal capability to accommodate/encapsulate nanoparticles/proteins, while the contraction enables a “sponge squeezing” motion for releasing nanoparticles. This crystal actuator is envisioned to be useful for a wide range of applications, including powering self-propelled robotics, sensing subtle environmental changes, constructing functional hybrid materials, and working in drug controlled-release systems.

18.6% Efficiency All-Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by a Wide Bandgap Polymer Donor Based on Benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bisthiazole

The limited selection of wide bandgap polymer donors for all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) is a bottleneck problem restricting their further development and remains poorly studied. In this work, a new wide bandgap polymer, namely PBBTz-Cl, is designed and synthesized by bridging the benzobisthiazole acceptor block and chlorinated benzodithiophene donor block with thiophene units for application as an electron donor in all-PSCs. PBBTz-Cl not only possesses wide bandgap and deep energy levels but also displays strong absorption, high-planar structure, and good crystallinity, making it a promising candidate for application as a polymer donor in organic solar cells. When paired with the narrow bandgap polymer acceptor PY-IT, a fibril-like morphology forms, which facilitates exciton dissociation and charge transport, contributing to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.15% of the corresponding all-PSCs. Moreover, when introducing another crystalline polymer acceptor BTP-2T2F into the PBBTz-Cl:PY-IT host blend, the absorption ditch in the range of 600–750 nm is filled, and the blend morphology is further optimized with the trap density reducing. As a result, the ternary blend all-PSCs achieve a significantly improved PCE of 18.60%, which is among the highest values for all-PSCs to date.

Actuating Liquid Crystals Rapidly and Reversibly by Using Chemical Catalysis

Abstract Microtubules and catalytic motor proteins underlie the microscale actuation of living materials, and they have been used in reconstituted systems to harness chemical energy to drive new states of organization of soft matter (e.g., liquid crystals (LCs)). Such materials, however, are fragile and challenging to translate to technological contexts. Rapid (sub‐second) and reversible changes in the orientations of LCs at room temperature using reactions between gaseous hydrogen and oxygen that are catalyzed by Pd/Au surfaces are reported. Surface chemical analysis and computational chemistry studies confirm that dissociative adsorption of H 2 on the Pd/Au films reduces preadsorbed O and generates 1 ML of adsorbed H, driving nitrile‐containing LCs from a perpendicular to a planar orientation. Subsequent exposure to O 2 leads to oxidation of the adsorbed H, reformation of adsorbed O on the Pd/Au surface, and a return of the LC to its initial orientation. The roles of surface composition and reaction kinetics in determining the LC dynamics are described along with a proof‐of‐concept demonstration of microactuation of beads. These results provide fresh ideas for utilizing chemical energy and catalysis to reversibly actuate functional LCs on the microscale.

Tetrahydrofuran Processable Organic Solar Cells with 19.45% Efficiency Realized by Introducing High Molecular Dipole Unit Into the Terpolymer

Developing organic solar cells (OSCs) processable with halogen‐free, non‐aromatic solvents is crucial for practical applications, yet challenging due to the limited solubility of most photoactive materials. Here, this study introduces high‐performance terpolymers processable in tetrahydrofuran (THF) by incorporating dithienophthalimide (DPI) into the PM6 backbone. DPI extends the absorption band, lowers HOMO levels, and improves THF solubility and film crystallinity through its large dipole moment effect. Optimal PBD‐10:L8‐BO devices processed with THF achieved a competitive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.79%, approaching chloroform‐processed devices (19.04%). By introducing PBTz‐F as a second donor, ternary OSCs reached an impressive 19.45% PCE when processed with THF. This improvement stems from enhanced photon generation, improved morphology, better charge transport, longer exciton lifetimes, efficient charge dissociation and collection, and suppressed recombination. These PCEs of 18.79% and 19.45% for binary and ternary blend OSCs, respectively, represent the highest reported efficiencies for OSCs processed with halogen‐free, non‐aromatic solvents. This work demonstrates significant progress in eco‐friendly OSC fabrication, paving the way for more sustainable and commercially viable organic photovoltaic technologies.

Rational Design of Methylated Triazine‐Based Linear Conjugated Polymers for Efficient CO 2 Photoreduction with Water

The development of semiconducting conjugated polymers for photoredox catalysis holds great promise for sustainable utilization of solar energy. In this work, a new family of porous methylated triazine‐based linear conjugated polymers is reported that enable efficient photoreduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) with water (H 2 O) vapor, in the absence of any additional photosensitizer, sacrificial agents or cocatalysts. It is demonstrated that the key lies in the generation of methylated triazine linkages through a facile condensation reaction between benzamidine and acetic anhydride, which impedes the formation of conventional triazine‐based frameworks. It is also shown that regulating conjugated linear backbones with different lengths of electron‐donated benzyl units provides a facile means to modulate their optical properties and the exciton dissociation, thereby affording more long‐lived photogenerated charge carriers and boosting charge separation and transfer. A high‐performance carbon monoxide (CO) production rate of 218.9 µmol g −1 h −1 is achieved with ≈ 100% CO selectivity, which is accompanied by exceptional H 2 O oxidation to oxygen (O 2 ). It anticipates this new study will advance synthetic approaches toward polymeric semiconductors and facilitate new possibilities for triazine‐based conjugated polymers with promising potential in artificial photocatalysis.

Robust Oxygen‐Vacancy‐Engineered Co(OH) 2 /Cu Heterostructures Boost Nitrate Electroreduction to Ammonia beyond 2 A cm −2

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) presents a sustainable paradigm for green NH 3 synthesis and NO 3 − wastewater valorization. However, overcoming sluggish NO 3 RR kinetics under industrial-current operation persists as a critical challenge. Herein, robust oxygen vacancy-enriched heterostructures (O v -Co(OH) 2 /Cu) are engineered through in situ electrochemical reconstruction. By coupling Cu-mediated NO 3 − -to-NO 2 − conversion with O v -Co(OH) 2 -accelerated NO 2 − -to-NH 3 transformation, this heterostructured system delivers an unprecedented NH 3 yield rate of 167.8 mg h −1 cm −2 and 97.7% Faradaic efficiency at >2 A cm −2 , while maintaining exceptional current tolerance over 25 h. Operando spectroscopic characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the introduction of O v in Co(OH) 2 synergistically accelerates water dissociation to ensure continuous hydrogen supply and optimizes *NOOH adsorption, reducing the energy barrier for the rate-limiting step (*NO 2 to *NOOH). To demonstrate practical viability, a membrane-electrode-assembly electrolyzer integrating NO 3 RR with glycerol oxidation reaction achieves highly effective co-production of NH 3 and formate alongside wastewater treatment. In conclusion, this work offers new insights into the rational design of electrocatalysts through in situ reconstruction-induced vacancy engineering for scalable and practical NO 3 RR applications.

Chemomechanical origin of morphological disparity in lithium metal electrodeposition

The morphology of electrochemically deposited lithium (Li) critically governs the cycling stability and safety of Li metal batteries, yet the underlying controlling factors remain poorly understood. Even within the same coin cell, Li deposits can exhibit strikingly different morphologies, for example, sparse whiskers coexisting with particle-like deposits, indicting strong local variations in growth conditions. By combining cryogenic transmission electron microscopy with phase-field modeling, we here identify the root cause of this disparity. We reveal that the morphological divergence originates from the variations in structure and chemical composition of the initial SEI layer formed on the copper (Cu) substrate. These variations arise from substrate defects that induce localized electrochemical fields, driving selective dissociation of either solvent or salt, producing SEI layers with distinct chemomechanical properties. Solvent-derived organic SEI favors whisker growth, whereas salt-derived SEI promotes particle formation. This study establishes a direct mechanistic link between SEI chemomechanical properties and Li morphology, providing design principles for tailoring SEI layers to control Li deposition

Study of Photocarriers Lifetime Distribution in a-Si:H via Magneto-photoconductivity and Magneto-Photoluminescence

In this report the magneto-photoluminescence (MPL) of localized photocarriers and magneto-photoconductivity (MPC) of delocalized photocarriers in amorphous hydrogenated silicon (a-Si:H) films and devices, respectively, are investigated. Both responses are caused by mixing of spin sublevels in the photogenerated electron–hole (e–h) pairs that alters their recombination and dissociation rates. The spin mixing occurs by a combination of hyperfine interaction (HFI) between spin ½ photocarriers and neighboring 29 Si and 1 H nuclei, and the Δg mechanism which originates from a difference in the Landé g-factors of electrons and holes. The existing disorder in a-Si:H films leads to dispersive field response that is described by a unique dispersive parameter α < 1, from which the e–h lifetime distribution, g(τ) is obtained. The mean e–h lifetime is found to be ≈12 ns for the high-energy, relatively delocalized photocarriers generating the photocurrent, as compared to ≈200 ps for the lower energy, trapped e–h pairs which yield photoluminescence. The MPL(B) and MPC(B) responses in a-Si:H subjected to prolonged illumination that causes Staebler–Wronski type degradation, and subsequent annealing are studied. The illumination-induced photocarrier localization that enhances the HFI component is found, which dramatically decreases upon annealing; this method can assess optoelectronic device degradation.

Synergy of Liquid-Crystalline Small-Molecule and Polymeric Donors Delivers Uncommon Morphology Evolution and 16.6% Efficiency Organic Photovoltaics

Achieving an ideal morphology is an imperative avenue for enhancing key parameters toward high-performing organic solar cells (OSCs). Among a myriad of morphological-control methods, the strategy of incorporating a third component with structural similarity and crystallinity difference to construct ternary OSCs has emerged as an effective approach to regulate morphology. A nematic liquid-crystalline benzodithiophene terthiophene rhodamine (BTR) molecule, which possesses the same alkylthio-thienyl-substituted benzo moiety but obviously stronger crystallinity compared to classical medium-bandgap polymeric donor PM6, is employed as a third component to construct ternary OSCs based on a PM6:BTR:Y6 system. The doping of BTR (5 wt%) is found to be enough to improve the OSC morphology—significantly enhancing the crystallinity of the photoactive layer while slightly reducing the donor/acceptor phase separation scale simultaneously. Rarely is such a morphology evolution reported. It positively affects the electronic properties of the device—prolongs the carrier lifetime, shortens the photocurrent decay time, facilitates exciton dissociation, charge transport, and collection, and ultimately boosts the power conversion efficiency from 15.7% to 16.6%. This result demonstrates that the successful synergy of liquid-crystalline small-molecule and polymeric donors delicately adjusts the active-layer morphology and refines device performance, which brings vibrancy to the OSC research field.

Solution‐Processed CsPbBr 3 Quantum Dots/Organic Semiconductor Planar Heterojunctions for High‐Performance Photodetectors

Abstract Planar heterojunctions (PHJs) are fundamental building blocks for construction of semiconductor devices. However, fabricating PHJs with solution‐processable semiconductors such as organic semiconductors (OSCs) is a challenge. Herein, utilizing the orthogonal solubility and good wettability between CsPbBr 3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) and OSCs, fabrication of solution‐processed PQD/OSC PHJs are reported. The phototransistors based on bilayer PQD/PDVT‐10 PHJs show responsivity up to 1.64 × 10 4 A W −1 , specific detectivity of 3.17 × 10 12 Jones, and photosensitivity of 5.33 × 10 6 when illuminated by 450 nm light. Such high photodetection performance is attributed to efficient charge dissociation and transport, as well as the photogating effect in the PHJs. Furthermore, the tri‐layer PDVT‐10/PQD/Y6 PHJs are used to construct photodiodes working in self‐powered mode, which exhibit broad range photoresponse from ultraviolet to near‐infrared, with responsivity approaching 10 −1 A W −1 and detectivity over 10 6 Jones. These results present a convenient and scalable production processes for solution‐processed PHJs and show their great potential for optoelectronic applications.

Terpolymer Donor with Inside Alkyl Substituents on Thiophene π ‐Bridges toward Thiazolothiazole A 2 ‐Unit Enables 18.21% Efficiency of Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract PM6 is a widely used D–A copolymer donor in the polymer solar cells (PSCs). Incorporating second electron‐withdrawing (A 2 ) units into PM6 backbone by ternary D–A 1 –D–A 2 random copolymerization strategy is an effective approach to further improve its photovoltaic performance. Here, the authors synthesize the PM6‐based terpolymers by introducing thiazolothiazole as the A 2 units connecting with thiophene π‐bridges attaching alkyl substituent towards the A 2 unit (PMT‐CT) or towards D‐unit (PMT‐FT), and study the effect of the alkyl substituent position on the photovoltaic performance of them. Two terpolymers PMT‐FT‐10 and PMT‐CT‐10 are obtained by incorporating 10% A 2 units in the terpolymers. The film of PMT‐CT‐10 shows slightly up‐shifted highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels while better co‐planar structure than that of PMT‐FT‐10. Meanwhile, the PMT‐CT‐10:Y6 blend film exhibits better molecular packing properties, more proper phase separation and more balanced hole and electron mobilities, which are beneficial to more efficient exciton dissociation, efficient charge transport and weaker bimolecular recombination. Consequently, the PMT‐CT‐10 based PSCs obtain the highest power conversion efficiency of 18.21%. The results indicate that side chain position on the thiophene π‐bridges influence the device performance of the terpolymer donors, and PMT‐CT‐10 is a high efficiency polymer donor for the PSCs.

Thermal Stability of Schottky Contacts and Rearrangement of Defects in β ‐Ga 2 O 3 Crystals

Abstract The thermal stability of different Schottky contacts (Au, Pt, and Ni) on (100) β ‐Ga 2 O 3 single crystals grown by the Czochralski method is investigated. Besides the examination of the Schottky barrier parameters, contact‐dependent defect levels are investigated by deep‐level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) in a 100–650 K (ramp‐up) and 650–100 K (ramp‐down) temperature cycle. Several defect levels are detected below the conduction band minimum at 0.41, 0.60, 0.77, 0.96, and 1.17 eV. In the temperature ramp‐down DLTS, the 1.17 eV level disappears, and the 0.60 eV level appears for all Schottky contacts. DFT calculations suggest that rearrangement and dissociation of a single hydrogen from a doubly‐hydrogenated Ga─O divacancy complex occurs during the temperature sweep under bias. The trap level at 0.96 eV only appears after the thermal load for the Ni contact, in contrast to Au and Pt, where it is present without a thermal budget. Temperature‐dependent leakage current (at −4 V) measurements indicate oxidation of Ni, and further thermodynamic analysis suggests alloying of Au‐Ga atoms at the Au/ β ‐Ga 2 O 3 interface. These studies provide insight into the behavior induced by these common Schottky contacts and the alteration associated with temperature cycling.

Critical Role of Polymer Aggregation and Miscibility in Nonfullerene‐Based Organic Photovoltaics

Abstract Understanding the correlation between polymer aggregation, miscibility, and device performance is important to establish a set of chemistry design rules for donor polymers with nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs). Employing a donor polymer with strong temperature‐dependent aggregation, namely PffBT4T‐2OD [poly[(5,6‐difluoro‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazol‐4,7‐diyl)‐ alt ‐(3,3″′‐di(2‐octyldodecyl)‐2,2′;5′,2″;5″,2″′‐quaterthiophen‐5,5‐diyl)], also known as PCE‐11 as a base polymer, five copolymer derivatives having a different thiophene linker composition are blended with the common NFA O‐IDTBR to investigate their photovoltaic performance. While the donor polymers have similar optoelectronic properties, it is found that the device power conversion efficiency changes drastically from 1.8% to 8.7% as a function of thiophene content in the donor polymer. Results of structural characterization show that polymer aggregation and miscibility with O‐IDTBR are a strong function of the chemical composition, leading to different donor–acceptor blend morphology. Polymers having a strong tendency to aggregate are found to undergo fast aggregation prior to liquid–liquid phase separation and have a higher miscibility with NFA. These properties result in smaller mixed donor–acceptor domains, stronger PL quenching, and more efficient exciton dissociation in the resulting cells. This work indicates the importance of both polymer aggregation and donor–acceptor interaction on the formation of bulk heterojunctions in polymer:NFA blends.
