Ferrofluidic solenoid with axial and radial displacement

New design is proposed for ferrofluidic solenoid with low magnetic flux leakage. Solenoid consists of a coil centered within a football-shaped elastomeric capsule filled with a ferromagnetic fluid. Fluid replaces the solid, movable core of conventional solenoids, and elastomeric capsule acts as return spring.

Friction at small displacement.

Low contact resistance between metal surfaces is often observed in spite of interposed lubricant and/or oxide films. To study this effect an apparatus is used with which normal force and tangential microdisplacement are applied between a small lead rider and a gold flat with various surface film conditions. Under nonoxidized and nonlubricated conditions, and with either oxide or stearic acid lubricant film alone, friction is high and contact resistance is low. With oxide and lubricant together, friction is much lower and slide is smooth, but contact resistance remains low and Ohm's law is obeyed. The results are consistent with Greenwood's theory of contact resistance for a cluster of minute metallic contact spots within the load-supporting area. The contact resistance of such a cluster is indistinguishable, for practical purposes, from that given by complete metallic contact.

Finite element displacement analysis of a lung.

A method is given based on the technique of finite elements which determines theoretically the mechanical behavior of a lung-shaped body loaded by its own weight. The results of this theoretical analysis have been compared with actual measurements of alveolar size and pleural pressures in animal lungs.

Evacuated displacement compression molding

A process for molding long, thin-wall tubular bodies from thermosetting plastic molding compounds is described. The tubular bodies produced may have body lengths several times the diameters. The application of the process for manufacturing rocket engine cases and nozzles is discussed. The advantages of the system over other methods of circular tube manufacture are analyzed.

Evacuated, displacement compression mold

A process of molding long thin-wall tubular bodies from thermosetting plastic molding compounds is described wherein the tubular body lengths may be several times the diameters. The process is accomplished by loading a predetermined quantity of molding compound into a female mold cavity closed at one end by a force mandrel. After closing the other end of the female mold with a balance mandrel, the loaded cavity is evacuated by applying a vacuum of from one-to-five mm pressure for a period of fifteen-to-thirty minutes. The mold temperature is raised to the minimum temperature at which the resin constituent of the compound will soften or plasticize and a pressure of 2500 psi is applied.

Ultrasonic displacement system

An acoustic instrument system is described as a feasible tool for remote measurement of structural velocities. The system involves measurement of the Doppler shift of ultrasonic sound as it is reflected from an oscillating plate. Measurements were performed in air with an ultrasonic frequency source of 42.5 kilohertz. The surface under investigation was a plexiglass plate oscillating sinusoidally at 10, 13, and 15 Hz. Data are presented to show that, in such a system, the measurement of the Doppler shift is dependent upon the acoustic pathlength between the sensing device and the oscillating surface, with the distance between maximum shifts being half the wavelength of the ultrasonic source.

Dissolution kinetics of small amounts of oxygen in tantalum alloy T-111 and internal oxide displacement reactions during annealing

Oxygen was added to T-111 (Ta-8W-2Hf, wt. %) at 820 and 990 C at an oxygen pressure of about 0.0003 torr. The technique employed permitted predetermined and reproducible doping of T-111 up to 3.0 at. % oxygen. Based on the temperature dependence of the doping reaction, it is concluded that the initial rates of oxygen pickup are probably controlled by solution of oxygen into the T-111 lattice. Although hafnium oxides are more stable than those of tantalum or tungsten, analyses of extracted residues indicate that the latter oxides predominate in the as-doped specimens, presumably because of the higher concentrations of tantalum and tungsten in the alloy. However, high-temperature annealing promotes gettering of dissolved oxygen and of other oxides to form hafnium oxides. Small amounts of tantalum and tungsten oxides were still present after high-temperature annealing. Tungsten oxide (WO3) volatilizes slightly from the surface of T-111 at 990 C. The vaporization of WO3 has no apparent affect on the doping reaction.

Stress computation in displacement methods for two-material elastic media

The method of best fit strain tensors is extended to compute the stresses satisfying the conditions of equilibrium, compatibility, and constitutive relationships. It is assumed that the deflections at the mesh points have already been computed with acceptable accuracy. Results of examples presented show better accuracy than the usual procedure, in which equilibrium conditions are not enforced. Special emphasis is placed here upon two-material elastic media.

Evacuated-displacement compression molding

Compression-molding process conprises: loading molding compound; evacuation; applying pressure to shape softened compound; further compressing while using compound as hydraulic fluid; and applying heat and pressure for cure. Major advantage of method is that it prevents increase in cavity volume (sporadic or general) throughout transformation phase of molding.
