Model-Independent Study of Structure in B + → D + D - K + Decays

The only anticipated resonant contributions to B + → D + D - K + decays are charmonium states in the D + D - channel. A model-independent analysis, using LHCb proton-proton collision data taken at center of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 , is carried out to test this hypothesis. The description of the data assuming that resonances only manifest in decays to the D + D - pair is shown to be incomplete. This constitutes evidence for a new contribution to the decay, potentially one or more new charm-strange resonances in the D + K - channel with masses around 2.9 GeV/c 2

Limits on the Existence of sub-MeV Sterile Neutrinos from the Decay of 7 Be in Superconducting Quantum Sensors

Sterile neutrinos are natural extensions to the standard model of particle physics and provide a possible portal to the dark sector. We report a new search for the existence of sub-MeV sterile neutrinos using the decay-momentum reconstruction technique in the decay of 7 Be. The experiment measures the total energy of the 7 Li daughter atom from the electron capture decay of 7 Be implanted into sensitive superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) quantum sensors. Here, this first experiment presents data from a single STJ operated at a low count rate for a net total of 28 days, and provides exclusion limits on sterile neutrinos in the mass range from 100 to 850 keV that improve upon previous work by up to an order of magnitude.

Evidence of a New Excited Charmed Baryon Decaying to Σ c ( 2455 ) 0 , + + π ±

We present the study of $\overline{B}$ 0 →Σ c ⁢(2455) 0,++ ⁢π ± $\overline{p}$ decays based on 772×10 6 B$\overline{B}$ events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e - collider. The Σ c⁢ (2455) 0,++ candidates are reconstructed via their decay to Λ$^{+}_{c}$π ∓ and Λ$^{+}_{c}$ decays to pK ⁢- π + , pK$^{0}_{S}$, and Λ⁢π + final states. The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be $\mathscr{B}$⁡($\overline{B}$ 0 →Σ c ⁢(2455) 0⁢ π + $\overline{p}$)=(1.09±0.06±0.07)×10 -4 and $\mathscr{B}$⁡($\overline{B}$ 0 →Σ c ⁢(2455) ++ ⁢π - ⁢$\overline{p}$)=(1.84±0.11±0.12)×10 -4 , which are consistent with the world average values with improved precision. A new structure is found in the M Σ c (2455) 0,++⁢π± spectrum with a significance of 4.2⁢σ including systematic uncertainty. The structure is possibly an excited Λ$^{+}_{c}$ and is tentatively named Λ c ⁢(2910) + . Its mass and width are measured to be (2913.8±5.6±3.8) MeV/c 2 and (51.8±20.0±18.8) MeV, respectively. The products of branching fractions for the Λ c ⁢(2910) + are measured to be $\mathscr{B}$⁡($\overline{B}$ 0 →Λ c (2910) + $\overline{p}$) × $\mathscr{B}$⁡(Λ c ⁢(2910) + →Σ c ⁢(2455) 0 π + )=(9.5±3.6±1.6) x 10 -6 and $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ 0 →Λ c ⁢(2910) + ⁢ $\overline{p}$) × $\mathscr{B}$⁡(Λ c (2910) + →Σ c (2455 )++ π - )=(1.24±0.35±0.10)×10 -5 . Search for Higgs Boson and Observation of $Z$ Boson through Their Decay into a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Boosted Topologies in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson ($H$) produced with transverse momentum ($p_T$) greater than 450 GeV and decaying to a charm quark-antiquark ($c\bar{c}$) pair is presented. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Boosted $H \to c\overline{c}$ decay products are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet and identified using a deep neural network charm tagging technique. The method is validated by measuring the $Z \to c\bar{c}$ decay process, which is observed in association with jets at high $p_T$ for the first time with a signal strength of $1.00^{+0.17}_{-0.14}$ (syst)$\pm 0.08$ (theo) $\pm 0.06$ (stat), defined as the ratio of the observed process rate to the SM expectation. The observed (expected) upper limit on $\sigma (H){\cal B}(H \to c\overline{c})$ is set at 47 (39) times the SM prediction at 95\%confidence level.

Search for Dark Photons in Rare $Z$ Boson Decays with the ATLAS Detector

A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139 fb –1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon’s coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α D ϵ 2 , in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the $Υ$ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

Observation of Significant Flavor-SU(3) Breaking in the Kaon Wave Function at 12 < Q 2 < 25 GeV 2 and Discovery of the Charmless Decay ψ ( 3770 ) → K S 0 K L 0

We present cross sections for the reaction e + e − → K S 0 K L 0 at center-of-mass energies ranging from 3.51 to 4.95 GeV using data samples collected in the BESIII experiment, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 26.5 fb − 1 . The ratio of neutral-to-charged kaon form factors at large momentum transfers ( 12 < Q 2 < 25 GeV 2 ) is determined to be 0.21 ± 0.01 , which indicates a small but significant effect of flavor-SU(3) breaking in the kaon wave function, and, consequently, excludes the possibility that flavor-SU(3) breaking is the primary reason for the strong experimental violation of the pQCD prediction | F ( π ± ) | / | F ( K ± ) | = f π 2 / f K 2 , where F ( π ± ) and F ( K ± ) are the form factors, and f π and f K are the decay constants of charged pions and kaons, respectively. We also observe a significant signal for the charmless decay ψ ( 3770 ) → K S 0 K L 0 for the first time. Within a 1 σ contour of the likelihood value, the branching fraction for ψ ( 3770 ) → K S 0 K L 0 is determined to be B = ( 2.6 3 − 1.59 + 1.40 ) × 10 − 5 , and the relative phase between the continuum and ψ ( 3770 ) amplitudes is ϕ = ( − 0.3 9 − 0.10 + 0.05 ) π . The branching fraction is in good agreement with the S - and D -wave charmonia mixing scheme proposed in the interpretation of the “ ρ π puzzle” between J / ψ and ψ ( 3686 ) decays. Search for Baryon-Number-Violating Processes in B − Decays to the Ξ ¯ c 0 Λ ¯ c − Final State

We report the results of the first search for B − decays to the Ξ ¯ c 0 Λ ¯ c − final state using 711 fb − 1 of data collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. The results are interpreted in terms of both direct baryon-number-violating B − decay and Ξ c 0 − Ξ ¯ c 0 oscillations which follow the standard model decay B − → Ξ c 0 Λ ¯ c − . We observe no evidence for baryon number violation and set the 95% confidence-level upper limits on the ratio of baryon-number-violating and standard model branching fractions B ( B − → Ξ ¯ c 0 Λ ¯ c − ) / B ( B − → Ξ c 0 Λ ¯ c − ) to be < 2.7 % and on the effective angular frequency of mixing ω in Ξ c 0 − Ξ ¯ c 0 oscillations to be < 0.76 ps − 1 (equivalent to τ mix > 1.3 ps ). Measurement of C P Violation Observables in D + → K − K + π + Decays

A search for violation of the charge-parity ( C P ) symmetry in the D + → K − K + π + decay is presented, with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 , collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the D + and D − phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the D s + → K − K + π + decay as a control channel. The p value for the hypothesis of C P conservation is 8.1%. The C P asymmetry observables A C P | S ϕ π + = ( 0.95 ± 0.4 3 stat ± 0.2 6 syst ) × 10 − 3 and A C P | S K ¯ * 0 K + = ( − 0.26 ± 0.5 6 stat ± 0.1 8 syst ) × 10 − 3 are also measured. These results show no evidence of C P violation and represent the most sensitive search performed through the phase space of a multibody decay. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Observation of the Charmonium Decay η c → γ γ in J / ψ → γ η c

Using ( 2712.4 ± 14.3 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the decay η c → γ γ in J / ψ → γ η c is observed. We determine the product branching fraction B ( J / ψ → γ η c ) × B ( η c → γ γ ) = ( 5.23 ± 0.2 6 stat ± 0.3 0 syst ) × 10 − 6 . This result is consistent with the lattice QCD calculation ( 5.34 ± 0.16 ) × 10 − 6 from HPQCD in 2023. By using the world-average values of B ( J / ψ → γ η c ) and the total decay width of η c , the partial decay width Γ ( η c → γ γ ) is determined to be ( 11.30 ± 0.5 6 stat ± 0.6 6 syst ± 1.1 4 ref ) keV , which deviates from the corresponding world-average value by 3.4 σ . Lattice calculation of light meson radiative leptonic decays

In this work, we perform a lattice QCD calculation of the branching ratios and the form factors\r\nof radiative leptonic decays P →ℓνℓγ (P= π,K) using Nf = 2+1 domain wall fermion ensembles\r\ngenerated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations at the physical pion mass. We adopt the\r\ninfinite-volume reconstruction (IVR) method, which extends lattice data to infinite volume and\r\neffectively controls the finite-volume effects. This study represents a first step toward a complete\r\ncalculation of radiative corrections to leptonic decays using the IVR method, including both real\r\nphoton emissions and virtual photon loops. For decays involving a final-state electron, collinear\r\nradiative corrections, enhanced by the large logarithmic factors such as ln(m2\r\nπ/m2e) and ln(m2K/m2e), can reach the level of O(10%) and are essential at the current level of theoretical and experimental precision. After including these corrections, our result for π →eνeγ agrees with the PIBETA measurement; for K →eνeγ, our results are consistent with the KLOE data and exhibit a 1.7σtension with E36; and for K →µνµγ, where radiative corrections are negligible, our results confirm the previously observed discrepancies between lattice results and the ISTRA/OKA measurements at large photon energies, and with the E787 results at large muon–photon angles.

Search for B 0 → K *0 𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − Decays at the Belle II Experiment

We present a search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay 𝐵 0 →𝐾 *0 ⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − with data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The analysis uses a 365 fb −1 data sample recorded at the center-of-mass energy of the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance. One of the 𝐵 mesons produced in the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆)→𝐵 0 $⁢\overline{𝐵}$ 0 process is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while its companion 𝐵 meson is required to decay into a 𝐾 *0 and two 𝜏 leptons of opposite charge. The 𝜏 leptons are reconstructed in final states with a single electron, muon, charged pion or charged 𝜌 meson, and additional neutrinos. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction of ℬ⁡(𝐵 0 →𝐾 *0 ⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − )<1.8×10 −3 at the 90% confidence level, which is the most stringent constraint reported to date.

Decay of Electrostatic Force of Dust Particles on Photovoltaic Modules

Photovoltaic (PV) energy yield loss due to solar module soiling has become increasingly important as solar module deployment is now at the hundreds of gigawatts scale and continues to grow rapidly. We have reported on direct measurements-using atomic force microscopy (AFM)-of strong electric-field-induced attraction and adhesion force (Fes) of dust particles onto solar panel that are 1 to 2 orders of magnitude stronger than the van der Waals and water capillary forces, corroborated by observing the increase in system voltage-induced soiling rate. Here, we report another characteristic of Fes on soiling-long lasting or slow decay after turning off the high voltage applied to solar panels. The Fes decay time varies in a wide time range of 1 to 10 hours, depending on two factors: 1) either/both the cell or/and particle were charged with high voltage before the voltages were turned off; and 2) how the cell was connected to the ground after the voltage was turned off-either connected through the power supply electronics, directly connected to the ground, or electrically floated. The Fes decay is understood in terms of 1) net electrical charge dissipations in both particle and cell, 2) thermal disordering of dipole polarization in the module glass dielectrics, and 3) charge redistribution by the electrostatic interaction of particle and module glass. This long-lasting Fes for hours can significantly affect the solar panel soiling after sunset, especially combined with water condensation.

Measurement of the branching fraction of the ${{B} ^0} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^+_{s}} {{\pi } ^-} $ decay

A branching fraction measurement of the \({{B} ^0} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^+_{s}} {{\pi } ^-} \) decay is presented using proton–proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of \(5.0\,\text {fb} ^{-1} \) . The branching fraction is found to be \({\mathcal {B}} ({{B} ^0} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^+_{s}} {{\pi } ^-} ) =(19.4 \pm \) \(1.8\pm 1.3 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-6}\) , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty on the \({{B} ^0} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^-} {{\pi } ^+} \) , \({{D} ^+_{s}} {\rightarrow }{{K} ^+} {{K} ^-} {{\pi } ^+} \) and \({{D} ^-} {\rightarrow }{{K} ^+} {{\pi } ^-} {{\pi } ^-} \) branching fractions. This is the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date. As this decay proceeds through a single amplitude involving a \(b{\rightarrow }u\) charged-current transition, the result provides information on non-factorisable strong interaction effects and the magnitude of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix element \(V_{ub}\) . Additionally, the collision energy dependence of the hadronisation-fraction ratio \(f_s/f_d\) is measured through \({{\overline{B}} {}^0_{s}} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^+_{s}} {{\pi } ^-} \) and \({{B} ^0} {\rightarrow }{{D} ^-} {{\pi } ^+} \) decays.

Search for heavy neutral leptons in $W^+\rightarrow \mu ^{+}\mu ^{\pm }\, \text {jet}$ decays

A search is performed for heavy neutrinos in the decay of a W boson into two muons and a jet. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 3.0fb –1 of proton–proton collision data at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV collected with the LHCb experiment. Both same-sign and opposite-sign muons in the final state are considered. Data are found to be consistent with the expected background. Upper limits on the coupling of a heavy neutrino with the Standard Model neutrino are set at 95% confidence level in the heavy-neutrino mass range from 5 to 50GeV/c 2 . These are of the order of 10 –3 for lepton-number-conserving decays and of the order of 10 –4 for lepton-number-violating heavy-neutrino decays.

Search for pair production of scalar leptoquarks decaying into first- or second-generation leptons and top quarks in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of scalar leptoquarks, each decaying into either an electron or a muon and a top quark, is presented. This is the first leptoquark search using ATLAS data to investigate top-philic cross-generational couplings that could provide explanations for recently observed anomalies in B meson decays. This analysis targets high leptoquark masses which cause the decay products of each resultant top quark to be contained within a single high-p T large-radius jet. The full Run 2 dataset is exploited, consisting of 139 fb -1 of data collected from proton–proton collisions at √s=13 TeV from 2015 to 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In the absence of any significant deviation from the background expectation, lower limits on the leptoquark masses are set at 1480 GeV and 1470 GeV for the electron and muon channel, respectively.

Measurement of the Higgs boson production rate in association with top quarks in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

The rate for Higgs (${\mathrm{H}} $) bosons production in association with either one (${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $) or two (${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton–proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of $13\,\text {Te}\text {V} $ by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$. The analysis is aimed at events that contain ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{W}} {\mathrm{W}} $, ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\tau } {\tau } $, or ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $, ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $, and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $ and ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $ signals correspond to $0.92 \pm 0.19\,\text {(stat)} ^{+0.17}_{-0.13}\,\text {(syst)} $ and $5.7 \pm 2.7\,\text {(stat)} \pm 3.0\,\text {(syst)} $ of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $, and to 1.4 (0.3) for ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $ production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling $y_{{\mathrm{t}}}$ of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, $\kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}=y_{{\mathrm{t}}}/y_{{\mathrm{t}}}^{\mathrm {SM}}$, is constrained to be within $-0.9< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< -0.7$ or $0.7< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< 1.1$, at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $ production rate to date.

The $$\pi f_0(500)$$ decay of the $$a_1(1260)$$

Abstract We evaluate the $$a_1(1260) \rightarrow \pi \sigma (f_0(500))$$ a 1 ( 1260 ) → π σ ( f 0 ( 500 ) ) decay width from the perspective that the $$a_1(1260)$$ a 1 ( 1260 ) resonance is dynamically generated from the pseudoscalar–vector interaction and the $$\sigma $$ σ arises from the pseudoscalar–pseudoscalar interaction. A triangle mechanism with $$a_1(1260) \rightarrow \rho \pi $$ a 1 ( 1260 ) → ρ π followed by $$\rho \rightarrow \pi \pi $$ ρ → π π and a fusion of two pions within the loop to produce the $$\sigma $$ σ provides the mechanism for this decay under these assumptions for the nature of the two resonances. We obtain widths of the order of 13–22 MeV. Present experimental results differ substantially from each other, suggesting that extra efforts should be devoted to the precise extraction of this important partial decay width, which should provide valuable information on the nature of the axial vector and scalar meson resonances and help clarify the role of the $$\pi \sigma $$ π σ channel in recent lattice QCD calculations of the $$a_1$$ a 1 .
