Mystic: Implementation of the Static Dynamic Optimal Control Algorithm for High-Fidelity, Low-Thrust Trajectory Design

Mystic software is designed to compute, analyze, and visualize optimal high-fidelity, low-thrust trajectories, The software can be used to analyze inter-planetary, planetocentric, and combination trajectories, Mystic also provides utilities to assist in the operation and navigation of low-thrust spacecraft. Mystic will be used to design and navigate the NASA's Dawn Discovery mission to orbit the two largest asteroids, The underlying optimization algorithm used in the Mystic software is called Static/Dynamic Optimal Control (SDC). SDC is a nonlinear optimal control method designed to optimize both 'static variables' (parameters) and dynamic variables (functions of time) simultaneously. SDC is a general nonlinear optimal control algorithm based on Bellman's principal.

Shock and vibration technology with applications to electrical systems

A survey is presented of shock and vibration technology for electrical systems developed by the aerospace programs. The shock environment is surveyed along with new techniques for modeling, computer simulation, damping, and response analysis. Design techniques based on the use of analog computers, shock spectra, optimization, and nonlinear isolation are discussed. Shock mounting of rotors for performance and survival, and vibration isolation techniques are reviewed.

Measurement updating using the U-D factorization

A new mechanization of the Kalman updating algorithm based on a U-D factorization of the estimate error covariance is introduced. Efficient and stable updating recursions are developed for the unit upper triangular factor U and the diagonal factor D, treating only the parameter estimation problem. Properties of the factorization update performed here include efficient one point at a time processing that requires little more computation than the optimal but numerically unstable conventional Kalman measurement update algorithm, and stability that compares with the square root filter.

Design study of wind turbines 50 kW to 3000 kW for electric utility applications: Analysis and design

In the conceptual design task, several feasible wind generator systems (WGS) configurations were evaluated, and the concept offering the lowest energy cost potential and minimum technical risk for utility applications was selected. In the optimization task, the selected concept was optimized utilizing a parametric computer program prepared for this purpose. In the preliminary design task, the optimized selected concept was designed and analyzed in detail. The utility requirements evaluation task examined the economic, operational, and institutional factors affecting the WGS in a utility environment, and provided additional guidance for the preliminary design effort. Results of the conceptual design task indicated that a rotor operating at constant speed, driving an AC generator through a gear transmission is the most cost effective WGS configuration. The optimization task results led to the selection of a 500 kW rating for the low power WGS and a 1500 kW rating for the high power WGS.

Overview of two-dimensional airfoil research at Ames Research Center

The five basic elements of the two dimensional airfoil research program at Ames Research Center are illustrated. These elements are experimental, theoretical (including computational), validation, design optimization, and industry interaction. Each area is briefly discussed.

Mathematical model for preventive maintenance scheduling

A model is formulated to describe the effect of the time interval chosen for preventive maintenance upon the frequency of failure and frequency of total maintenance. Trade-offs between these two frequencies are determined by computation of an optimal interval in the case where the failure distribution is known. For unknown distributions, an adaptive statistical technique is developed that converges to an optimal preventive maintenance interval. A numerical illustration is given.

Optical system of the visual imaging subsystem on the Viking Orbiter spacecraft

The development of the optical system for the Viking Orbiter spacecraft is presented. Each spacecraft consisted of an orbiter and a lander, and the orbiter provided support during the lander descent, landing and operation on the Martian surface, and prior to separation the orbiter provided science data for site selection and certification. To support these objectives each orbiter carried twin camera systems with identical 475 mm f/3.5 telescopes. The development of the Visual Imaging Subsystem which used all spherical catadioptric cassegrains with all elements fabricated from pure fused silica and Mangin primary mirrors is described. Computer aided design optimization and the ray aberration analysis of the final design are presented. The Viking telescopes had high theoretical and measured performance and obtained many high quality images of the Martian surface.
