Relativistic and correlation effects in the photoionization dynamics of oganesson ( Z = 118): Spin-orbit-interaction-activated interchannel coupling effects

High-Z atoms are excellent laboratories to study the combination of relativistic and many-electron correlation effects in electronic structure and dynamics. In the present work, the relativistic-random-phase approximation at different levels of truncation is employed to explore the final-state correlation effects in the photoelectron dynamics of the heaviest known element in the Periodic Table: oganesson (Og) with Z = 118. Here, the focus of this work is to illustrate the relativistic effects resulting from coupling different photoionization channels arising from spin-orbit split subshells, termed the spin-orbit-interaction-activated interchannel coupling effect. Comparison with the photoelectron dynamics of Rn on a qualitative level is also carried out, since Og is a homologue of Rn. The photoelectron dynamics of 7p, 7s, and 6d subshells are investigated and differences between Og and Rn, due to enhanced relativistic effects, are investigated.

Angle-resolved pair photoemission theory for correlated electrons

Here in this paper we consider the possibility and conditions for pair photoemission whereby two incident photons emit pairs of electrons from a candidate material as a novel method to measure and visualize electronic correlations. As opposed to double photoemission - where a single photon precipitates the ejection of a pair electrons via a subsequent electron energy loss scattering process - we show that pair photoemission need not be limited to interference between initial photoelectrons and valence electrons, and moreover, can occur without the energy penalty of two work functions. This enables detection of pairs of electrons at high energy resolution that may be correlated in the same quantum many-body states.

Quantum Hall effect in a Weyl-Hubbard model: Interplay between topology and correlation

The interplay between topology and electronic correlations offer a rich avenue for discovering emergent quantum phenomena in condensed matter systems. Here, in this work, starting from the Weyl-Hubbard model, we investigate the quantum Hall effect to explore the consequence of onsite Hubbard repulsion on nontrivial Weyl band topology in the presence of an external magnetic field. Within the Gutzwiller projected wavefunction method, we find the system to undergo multiple topological phase transitions by tuning on-site Coulomb interaction, including two distinct Weyl phases with different numbers of Weyl node pairs and a trivial narrow band insulator. Crucially, these two Weyl phases may be identified by the sign of their chiral Landau levels. The possible experimental signature of these topological phases and correlation effects is provided by the magnetic-field dependent quantum Hall conductivity within the Kubo response theory.

Charge self-consistent density functional theory plus ghost rotationally invariant slave-boson theory for correlated materials

We present a charge self-consistent density functional theory combined with the ghost rotationally invariant slave-boson (DFT+gRISB) formalism for studying correlated materials. Here, this method is applied to SrVO 3 and NiO, representing prototypical correlated metals and charge-transfer insulators. For SrVO 3 , we demonstrate that DFT+gRISB yields an accurate equilibrium volume and effective mass close to experimentally observed values. Regarding NiO, DFT+gRISB enables the simultaneous description of charge-transfer and Mott-Hubbard bands, significantly enhancing the accuracy of the original DFT+RISB approach. Furthermore, the calculated equilibrium volume and spectral function reasonably agree with experimental observations.

Probing nuclear quadrupole deformation from correlation of elliptic flow and transverse momentum in heavy ion collisions

In heavy ion collisions, elliptic flow v2 and radial flow, characterized by eventwise average transverse momentum [p T ], are related to the shape and size of the overlap region, which are sensitive to the shape of colliding atomic nuclei. The Pearson correlation coefficient between v 2 and [p T ], ρ 2 , was found to be particularly sensitive to the quadrupole deformation parameter β that is traditionally measured in low energy experiments. Built on earlier insight that the prolate deformation β>0 reduces the ρ 2 in ultracentral collisions (UCC), we show that the prolate deformation β<0 enhances the value of ρ 2 . As β>0 and β<0 are the two extremes of triaxiality, the strength and sign of v 2 2 -[pT] correlation can be used to provide valuable information on the triaxiality of the nucleus. Our study provide further arguments for using the hydrodynamic flow as a precision tool to directly image the deformation of the atomic nuclei at extremely short timescale (<10 -24 s).

Higher-order cumulants and correlation functions of proton multiplicity distributions in s N N = 3 GeV Au + Au collisions at the RHIC STAR experiment

Here, we report a measurement of cumulants and correlation functions of event-by-event proton multiplicity distributions from fixed-target Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}$ = 3 GeV measured by the STAR experiment. Protons are identified within the rapidity (y) and transverse momentum ($p_T$) region –0:9 < $\textit{y}$ < 0 and 0:4 < pT < 2:0 GeV/c in the center-of-mass frame. A systematic analysis of the proton cumulants and correlation functions up to sixth-order as well as the corresponding ratios as a function of the collision centrality, $p_T$, and $\textit{y}$ are presented. The effect of pileup and initial volume fluctuations on these observables and the respective corrections are discussed in detail. The results are compared to calculations from the hadronic transport UrQMD model as well as a hydrodynamic model. In the most central 5% collisions, the value of proton cumulant ratio $C_4 = C_2$ is negative, drastically different from the values observed in Au+Au collisions at higher energies. Compared to model calculations including Lattice QCD, a hadronic transport model, and a hydrodynamic model, the strong suppression in the ratio of $C_4/C_2$ at 3 GeV Au+Au collisions indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions.

Two-particle Bose-Einstein correlations and their Lévy parameters in PbPb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV

Two-particle Bose–Einstein momentum correlation functions are studied for charged-hadron pairs in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN = 5.02 TeV . The data sample, containing 4.27 × 10 9 minimum bias events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.607 nb − 1 , was collected by the CMS experiment in 2018. The experimental results are discussed in terms of a Lévy-type source distribution. The parameters of this distribution are extracted as functions of particle pair average transverse mass and collision centrality. These parameters include the Lévy index or shape parameter α , the Lévy scale parameter R , and the correlation strength parameter λ . The source shape, characterized by α , is found to be neither Cauchy nor Gaussian, implying the need for a full Lévy analysis. Similarly to what was previously found for systems characterized by Gaussian source radii, a hydrodynamical scaling is observed for the Lévy R parameter. The λ parameter is studied in terms of the core-halo model. ©2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Centrality dependence of Lévy-stable two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in $\sqrt{𝑠{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions

The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{𝑠{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by Lévy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter 𝜆, the Lévy index of stability 𝛼, and the Lévy-scale parameter 𝑅 as a function of transverse mass 𝑚 𝑇 and centrality. The 𝜆⁡(𝑚 𝑇 ) parameter is constant at larger values of 𝑚 𝑇 , but decreases as 𝑚 𝑇 decreases. The Lévy-scale parameter 𝑅⁡(𝑚 𝑇 ) decreases with 𝑚 𝑇 and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The Lévy exponent 𝛼⁡(𝑚 𝑇 ) is independent of 𝑚 𝑇 within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the Lévy exponent 𝛼 is significantly different from that of Gaussian (𝛼 = 2) or Cauchy (𝛼 = 1) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that, in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%–60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the 𝜂′ meson is included. Finally, in each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium 𝜂′ mass is compared to the mass of the 𝜂 meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of U 𝐴⁢ (1) symmetry in hot hadronic matter.

Investigating Λ baryon production in 𝑝-Pb collisions in jets and the underlying event using angular correlations

First measurements of hadron-Λ (ℎ−Λ) azimuthal angular correlations in 𝑝-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. These correlations are used to separate the production of associated Λ baryons into three different kinematic regions, namely those produced in the direction of the trigger particle (near side), those produced in the opposite direction (away side), and those whose production is uncorrelated with the jet axis (underlying event). The per-trigger associated Λ yields in these regions are extracted, along with the near- and away-side azimuthal peak widths, and the results are studied as a function of associated particle 𝑝 T and event multiplicity. Comparisons with the dpmjet event generator and previous measurements of the 𝜙⁡(1020) meson are also made. The final results indicate that strangeness production in the highest multiplicity 𝑝-Pb collisions is enhanced relative to low multiplicity collisions in both the jetlike regions and the underlying event. The production of Λ relative to charged hadrons is also enhanced in the underlying event when compared to the jetlike regions. Additionally, the results hint that strange quark production in the away-side of the jet is modified by soft interactions with the underlying event.

Theoretical description of proton-deuteron interactions using exact two-body dynamics of the femtoscopic correlation method

Modeling proton-deuteron interactions is particularly challenging. Due the deuteron's large size, the interaction can extend over several femtometers. The degree to which it can be modeled as a two-body problem might also be questioned. One way to study these interactions is through femtoscopic correlation measurements of particle pairs, extracting information using available theoretical models. In this work, we examine two approaches for describing proton-deuteron correlations: the Lednický-Lyuboshits formalism and full numerical solutions of the Schrödinger equation. Here, our results show that the differences between these methods are significant. Furthermore, we demonstrate that incorporating higher-order partial waves—particularly the p wave—is essential for accurately capturing the dynamics of proton–deuteron interactions and the full potential of the strong force.

Many-Body Resonance in a Correlated Topological Kagome Antiferromagnet

We use scanning tunneling microscopy to elucidate the atomically resolved electronic structure in the strongly correlated kagome Weyl antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn. In stark contrast to its broad single-particle electronic structure, we observe a pronounced resonance with a Fano line shape at the Fermi level resembling the many-body Kondo resonance. We find that this resonance does not arise from the step edges or atomic impurities but the intrinsic kagome lattice. Moreover, the resonance is robust against the perturbation of a vector magnetic field, but broadens substantially with increasing temperature, signaling strongly interacting physics. We show that this resonance can be understood as the result of geometrical frustration and strong correlation based on the kagome lattice Hubbard model. Our results point to the emergent many-body resonance behavior in a topological kagome magnet.

Nanoscale Critical Phenomena in a Complex Fluid Studied by X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy.

The advent of high-speed x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy now allows the study of critical phenomena in fluids to much smaller length scales and over a wider range of temperatures than is possible with dynamic light scattering. We present an x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy study of critical fluctuation dynamics in a complex fluid typical of those used in liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) of ions,dodecane-DMDBTDMA with extracted aqueous Ce(NO 3 ) 3 . We observe good agreement with both staticand dynamic scaling without the need for significant noncritical background corrections. Critical exponents agree with 3D Ising values, and the fluctuation dynamics are described by simple exponential relaxation. The form of the dynamic master curve deviates somewhat from the Kawasaki result, with a more abrupt transition between the critical and noncritical asymptotic behavior. The concepts of critical phenomena thus provide a quantitative framework for understanding the structure and dynamics of LLE systems and a path forward to new LLE processes.

Nanoscale Conductivity Imaging of Correlated Electronic States in WSe 2 /WS 2 Moiré Superlattices

We report the nanoscale conductivity imaging of correlated electronic states in angle-aligned WSe 2 /WS 2 heterostructures using microwave impedance microscopy. Here, the noncontact microwave probe allows us to observe the Mott insulating state with one hole per moiré unit cell that persists for temperatures up to 150 K, consistent with other characterization techniques. In addition, we identify for the first time a Mott insulating state at one electron per moiré unit cell. Appreciable inhomogeneity of the correlated states is directly visualized in the hetero-bilayer region, indicative of local disorders in the moiré superlattice potential or electrostatic doping. Our work provides important insights on 2D moiré systems down to the microscopic level.

Bulk Photovoltaic Effect Driven by Collective Excitations in a Correlated Insulator

We investigate the bulk photovoltaic effect, which rectifies light into electric current, in a collective quantum state with correlation driven electronic ferroelectricity. We show via explicit real-time dynamical calculations that the effect of the applied electric field on the electronic order parameter leads to a strong enhancement of the bulk photovoltaic effect relative to the values obtained in a conventional insulator. The enhancements include both resonant enhancements at sub-band-gap frequencies, arising from excitation of optically active collective modes, and broadband enhancements arising from nonresonant deformations of the electronic order. The deformable electronic order parameter produces an injection current contribution to the bulk photovoltaic effect that is entirely absent in a rigid-band approximation to a time-reversal symmetric material. Furthermore, our findings establish that correlation effects can lead to the bulk photovoltaic effect and demonstrate that the collective behavior of ordered states can yield large nonlinear optical responses.

Ab Initio Multiplet-Plus-Cumulant Approach for Correlation Effects in X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

The treatment of electronic correlations in open-shell systems is among the most challenging problems of condensed matter theory. Current approximations are only partly successful. Ligand-field multiplet theory has been widely successful in describing intra-atomic correlation effects in x-ray spectra, but typically ignores itinerant states. The cumulant expansion for the one-electron Green’s function has been successful in describing shake-up effects but ignores atomic multiplets. More complete methods, such as dynamic mean-field theory can be computationally demanding. Here, we show that separating the dynamic Coulomb interactions into local and longer-range parts with ab initio parameters yields a combined multiplet-plus-cumulant approach that accounts for both local atomic multiplets and satellite excitations. The approach is illustrated in transition metal oxides and explains the multiplet peaks, charge-transfer satellites, and distributed background features observed in XPS experiment.

Emergence of Long-Range Angular Correlations in Low-Multiplicity Proton-Proton Collisions

This Letter presents the measurement of near-side associated per-trigger yields, denoted ridge yields, from the analysis of angular correlations of charged hadrons in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV . Long-range ridge yields are extracted for pairs of charged particles with a pseudorapidity difference of 1.4 < | Δ η | < 1.8 and a transverse momentum of 1 < p T < 2 GeV / c , as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity. This Letter extends the measurements of the ridge yield to the low multiplicity region, where in hadronic collisions it is typically conjectured that a strongly interacting medium is unlikely to be formed. The precision of the new low multiplicity results allows for the first direct quantitative comparison with the results obtained in e + e − collisions at s = 91 GeV and s = 183 – 209 GeV , where initial-state effects such as preequilibrium dynamics and collision geometry are not expected to play a role. In the multiplicity range 8 ≲ ⟨ N ch ⟩ ≲ 24 where the e + e − results have good precision, the measured ridge yields in p p collisions are substantially larger than the limits set in e + e − annihilations. Consequently, the findings presented in this Letter suggest that the processes involved in e + e − annihilations do not contribute significantly to the emergence of long-range correlations in p p collisions. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Azimuthal Angle Correlations of Muons Produced via Heavy-Flavor Decays in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

Angular correlations between heavy quarks provide a unique probe of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Results are presented of a measurement of the azimuthal angle correlations between muons originating from semileptonic decays of heavy quarks produced in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb and pp collisions at the LHC. The muons are measured with transverse momenta and pseudorapidities satisfying p$^μ_T$ > 4 GeV and |η μ | < 2.4, respectively. The distributions of azimuthal angle separation Δ⁢Φ for muon pairs having pseudorapidity separation |Δη| > 0.8, are measured in different Pb +Pb centrality intervals and compared to the same distribution measured in pp collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. Results are presented separately for muon pairs with opposite-sign charges, same-sign charges, and all pairs. A clear peak is observed in all Δ⁢Φ distributions at Δ⁢Φ ~ π, consistent with the parent heavy-quark pairs being produced via hard-scattering processes. The widths of that peak, characterized using Cauchy-Lorentz fits to the Δ⁢Φ distributions, are found to not vary significantly as a function of Pb +Pb collision centrality and are similar for pp and Pb +Pb collisions. This observation will provide important constraints on theoretical descriptions of heavy-quark interactions with the quark-gluon plasma.

Spin Correlations in the Parent Phase of Li 1–x Fe x ⁢ ODFeSe

Elucidating spin correlations in the parent compounds of high-temperature superconductors is crucial for understanding superconductivity. We used neutron scattering to study spin correlations in Li 1–x Fe x ⁢ ODFeSe, an insulating material with reduced electron carriers compared to its superconducting counterpart (T c = 41 K), serving as the undoped parent compound. Our findings show a reduced total fluctuating moment in this insulator relative to FeSe and 122 iron pnictides, likely due to increased interlayer distances from intercalation, which enhance fluctuations and reduce the intensity of spin excitations. Moreover, we observed a V-shaped spin wavelike excitation dispersion, contrasting with the twisted hourglass pattern in the superconducting counterpart. Electron doping shifts spin excitation from (π,0) point to an incommensurate position towards (π,π) direction below 65 meV. In conclusion, this transition from V-shaped to hourglasslike dispersion, akin to behaviors in hole-doped cuprates, suggests a potential shared mechanism in magnetism and superconductivity across these diverse systems.
