Correlations among the parameters of the spherical model for eclipsing binaries

Correlation coefficients were computed to investigate the parameters for describing the spherical model of an eclipsing binary system. Regions in parameter hyperspace were identified where strong correlations exist and, by implication, the solution determinacy is low. The results are presented in tabular form for a large number of system configurations.

Improved methods of performing coherent optical correlation

Coherent optical correlators are described in which complex spatial filters are recorded by a quasi-Fourier transform method. The high-pass spatial filtering effects (due to the dynamic range of photographic films) normally encountered in Vander Lugt type complex filters are not present in this system. Experimental results for both transmittive as well as reflective objects are presented. Experiments are also performed by illuminating the object with diffused light. A correlator using paraboloidal mirror segments as the Fourier-transforming element is also described.

Characterization of impulse noise and analysis of its effect upon correlation receivers

A noise model is formulated to describe the impulse noise in many digital systems. A simplified model, which assumes that each noise burst contains a randomly weighted version of the same basic waveform, is used to derive the performance equations for a correlation receiver. The expected number of bit errors per noise burst is expressed as a function of the average signal energy, signal-set correlation coefficient, bit time, noise-weighting-factor variance and probability density function, and a time range function which depends on the crosscorrelation of the signal-set basis functions and the noise waveform. A procedure is established for extending the results for the simplified noise model to the general model. Unlike the performance results for Gaussian noise, it is shown that for impulse noise the error performance is affected by the choice of signal-set basis functions and that Orthogonal signaling is not equivalent to On-Off signaling with the same average energy.

Correlation of stress-wave-emission characteristics with fracture aluminum alloys

A study to correlate stress wave emission characteristics with fracture in welded and unwelded aluminum alloys tested at room and cryogenic temperature is reported. The stress wave emission characteristics investigated were those which serve to presage crack instability; viz., a marked increase in:(1) signal amplitude; (2) signal repetition rate; and (3) the slope of cumulative count plotted versus load. The alloys were 7075-T73, 2219-T87 and 2014-T651, welded with MIG and TIG using 2319 and 4043 filler wire. The testing was done with both unnotched and part-through-crack (PTC) tension specimens and with 18-in.-dia subscale pressure vessels. In the latter testing, a real time, acoustic emission, triangulation system was used to locate the source of each stress wave emission. With such a system, multiple emissions from a given location were correlated with defects found by conventional nondestructive inspection.

Correlation between convection electric fields in the nightside magnetosphere and several wave and particle phenomena during two isolated substorms.

Correlation of several magnetoionospheric wave and particle phenomena previously linked observationally to magnetospheric substorms and inferred to involve convection electric fields with whistler measurements of convection activity during two relatively isolated substorms. The events occurred at about 0600 UT on July 15, 1965, and about 0500 UT on Oct. 13, 1965. The correlated phenomena include cross-L inward plasma drifts near midnight within the plasmaphere, diffuse auroral radar echoes observed near the dusk meridian, IPDP micropulsations (intervals of pulsations of diminishing period) in the premidnight sector, apparent contractions and expansions of the plasma sheet at about 20 earth radii in the magnetotail, and Pc 1/Pi 1 micropulsation events near or before midnight. Two new vlf phenomena occurred during the October 13 event - a noise band within the plasmasphere associated with a convecting whistler path, and ?hisslers,' falling-tone auroral-hiss forms repeated at intervals of about 2 sec.

Fixed-point smoothing of sequentially correlated processes.

The fixed-point smoothing problem of sequentially correlated processes is considered. The filtering technique of such processes is extended to smoothing problems by simultaneously estimating the state and the accumulated contribution of process noise. Suboptimal filtering and smoothing are also discussed when data noise is regarded white in designing filters although it is actually sequentially correlated.-

Effect of slow rotational diffusion on angular correlations.

The theory for perturbed angular correlations of gamma radiation has been extended to include the possibility of adiabatic variation in the interaction Hamiltonian, K, for the intermediate state. The calculation begins from a polycrystalline model. It is shown that adiabatic variation in K introduces a time dependence into the angles which express the orientation of the molecular frame. The relevance of the adiabatic limit to the use of perturbed angular correlations of gamma radiation for study of the motion of radioactive species in viscous media is discussed.

Estimation of correlation functions by stochastic approximation.

Consideration of the autocorrelation function of a zero-mean stationary random process. The techniques are applicable to processes with nonzero mean provided the mean is estimated first and subtracted. Two recursive techniques are proposed, both of which are based on the method of stochastic approximation and assume a functional form for the correlation function that depends on a number of parameters that are recursively estimated from successive records. One technique uses a standard point estimator of the correlation function to provide estimates of the parameters that minimize the mean-square error between the point estimates and the parametric function. The other technique provides estimates of the parameters that maximize a likelihood function relating the parameters of the function to the random process. Examples are presented.

Causality of the nonequilibrium correlation functions.

It is shown that the correct lowest-order two-particle correlation function solution to the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchy is given via a Green's function whose Fourier transform satisfies the analyticity requirements for causality. The Bogoliubov adiabatic approximation is shown to imply a solution which is acausal. Extension to the s-particle correlation function is discussed.

Correlation of liquid-film cooling mass transfer data.

An empirical correlation proposed by Gater and Ecuyer (1970) for liquid-film cooling mass transfer, accounting for film roughness and entrainment effects, is extended to include liquid films of arbitrary length. A favorable comparison between the predicted results and the experimental data of Kinney et al. (1952) and Emmons and Warner (1964) shows the utility of the mass transfer correlation for predictions over a wide range of experimental parameters.

Gamma-neutrino angular correlations in muon capture.

Using a high-resolution Ge(Li) spectrometer, it proved possible to observe several Doppler-broadened gamma-ray transitions in Al-28 excited by muon capture in Si-28. Several of these transitions are shown to be suitable for analysis in terms of angular correlations between the neutrino and a deexcitation nuclear gamma-ray. The observed transitions are interpreted in terms of gamma-neutrino correlation coefficients which are functions of the weak-interaction coupling constants.

Correlation of experimental performance data for a CVD tungsten-niobium, planar thermionic converter

Approximate expressions are presented which correlate experimental performance data from a CVD tungsten-niobium, planar thermionic converter. The current voltage characteristics are given as functions of emitter and collector temperatures and cesium pressure for currents below the knee in the ignited mode. The correlation covers the temperature ranges of 1700 to 1950 K for the emitter, 900 to 1050 K for the collector, and 580 to 645 K for the cesium reservoir.

Correlation interferometric measurement of trace species in the atmosphere.

Two correlation interferometers, a breadboard model and an engineering model, have been designed, constructed, and tested for the measurement of selected atmospheric trace species. Test results showed that errors of less than 10% are attainable for atmospheric amounts of carbon monoxide and methane measured at 2.3 microns. Based on these results a program has been undertaken to determine the feasibility of measuring other trace species by correlation interferometry. It shown that in addition to carbon monoxide and methane, carbon dioxide, water vapor, ammonia, nitric oxide, nitrous oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide can also be accurately measured with this instrument.

A correlation between colors of Jovian clouds and their 5-micron temperatures.

Observations of Jupiter at 5 microns by Keay, Low, and Rieke were compared with color photographs by Minton and Kutoroff taken near the same epoch. A strong correlation is evident between the 5-micron temperature distribution on the Jupiter disk and the cloud colors. Further comparison is made with photographs in the .888-micron CH4 absorption band. Strong correlations exist for features in System II latitudes at all three wavelegths but not for those that move with System I. This is attributed to more intensive convection in the Equatorial Zone. Owen's suggestion that colors may result from at least two mechanisms appears valid; a third appears responsible for blue features only.

Acquisition and analysis of coastal ground-truth data for correlation with ERTS-1 imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. Radiance profiles drawn along cruise tracks have been examined for use in correlating digital radiance levels with ground truth data. Preliminary examination results are encouraging. Adding weighted levels from the 4 MSS bands appears to enhance specular surface reflections while rendering sensor noise white. Comparing each band signature to the added specular signature ought to enhance non-specular effects caused by ocean turbidity. Preliminary examination of radiance profiles and ground truth turbidity measurements revealed substantial correlation.
