Internal Flow and Burning Characteristics of 16-inch Ram Jet Operating in a Free Jet at Mach Numbers of 1.35 and 1.73

The effects of mass-flow ratio on the additive drag and normal-shock position of a single oblique-shock diffuser are presented. Also evaluated is the variation with operating condition of the velocity distribution at the combustion-chamber inlet. A comparison with connected-pipe data is included. Burner performance with a corrugated gutter-grid flame holder is discussed. It is shown that the total-pressure drop across the combustion chamber can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from the computed flame holder and combustion momentum pressure losses.

Flight and Preflight Tests of a Ram Jet Burning Magnesium Slurry Fuel and Utilizing a Solid-propellant Gas Generator for Fuel Expulsion

Data obtained from the first flight test of a ram jet utilizing a magnesium slurry fuel are presented. The ram jet accelerated from a Mach number of 1.75 to a Mach number of 3.48 in 15.5 seconds. During this period a maximum values of air specific impulse and gross thrust coefficient were calculated to be 151 seconds and 0.658, respectively. The rocket gas generator used as a fuel-pumping system operated successfully.

Contribution to the Study of Normal Burning in Gaseous Carbureted Mixtures. Part I

In the present study it is proposed to provide an equipment permitting the study of the propagation of the region of reaction in mixtures of air and carbureted gases enclosed within a cylinder. Ignition is produced at the end of compression by an electric spark. With this apparatus it is proposed to determine: 1) the influence of the richness of the explosive mixture on the rate of flame propagation; 2) the influence of the degree of volumetric compression on one of the hydrocarbons; 3) the influence of the variation of initial temperature of the mixture before compression; 4) the influence of tetraethyl-lead on the propagation - notably on the formation of the explosive wave.

Lean burn combustor technology at GE Aircraft Engines

This presentation summarizes progress to date at GE Aircraft Engines in demonstration of a lean combustion system for the High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT). These efforts were supported primarily by NASA contracts, with the exception of initial size and weight estimates and development of advanced diagnostics which were conducted under GE Independent Research and Development projects. Key accomplishments to date are summarized below.
