Hard tissue as a composite material. I - Bounds on the elastic behavior.

Recent determination of the elastic moduli of hydroxyapatite by ultrasonic methods permits a re-examination of the Voigt or parallel model of the elastic behavior of bone, as a two phase composite material. It is shown that such a model alone cannot be used to describe the behavior of bone. Correlative data on the elastic moduli of dentin, enamel and various bone samples indicate the existence of a nonlinear dependence of elastic moduli on composition of hard tissue. Several composite models are used to calculate the bounds on the elastic behavior of these tissues. The limitations of these models are described, and experiments to obtain additional critical data are discussed.

Upper bound on compression ratio for run-length encoding.

Run-length encoding is a scheme which has been used to remove redundancy from video signals. Based upon a first-order Markov model of video data, an upper bound on compression ratio is found for run-length encoding. It is shown that at best run-length encoding will give a compression ratio which is approximately 60% of the maximum attainable value. This percentage is fairly independent of the particular picture involved.

Curved space cosmological bounds on the time variation of G.

Additional quantitative and revealing arguments are given in favor of author's previous suggestion (1971) that the introduction of pressure results in a decrease in the theoretical upper bound on the time variation of G, as predicted by the Brans-Dicke theory (1961) for Friedmann-type expanding cosmologies in flat space, and that this suggestion holds in curved spaces as well. Moreover, it is shown that the curvature contribution to G is of the same order of magnitude as the flat space contribution and adds to it or subtracts from it for positive or negative curvatures respectively.

Magnitude error bounds for sampled-data frequency response obtained from the truncation of an infinite series, and compensator improvement program

The frequency response method of analyzing control system performance is discussed, and the difficulty of obtaining the sampled frequency response of the continuous system is considered. An upper bound magnitude error equation is obtained which yields reasonable estimates of the actual error. Finalization of the compensator improvement program is also reported, and the program was used to design compensators for Saturn 5/S1-C dry workshop and Saturn 5/S1-C Skylab.

Invariance and stability for bounded uncertain systems.

The positive limit sets of the solutions of a contingent differential equation are shown to possess an invariance property. In this connection the 'invariance principle' in the theory of Lyapunov stability is extended to systems with unknown, bounded, time-varying parameters, and thus to a large and important class of nonautonomous systems. Asymptotic stability criteria are obtained and applied to guaranteed cost control problems.

Low-frequency flute instabilities of a bounded plasma column.

Derivation of exact solutions for unstable waves (called flute waves) which occur in a radially bounded plasma column at frequencies below the ion cyclotron frequency. Both analytical and numerical solutions are presented for the m = 1 and m = 2 azimuthal modes for a variety of radial electric field profiles. It is shown that the behavior of the flute waves can depend sensitively on the radial extent of the plasma column. Moreover, it is found that the m = 1 mode and the m = 2 mode do not respond in the same way to changes in the radial boundary position or in the electric field profile.

An analytic study on bounds for the associated Legendre functions

The bounds for the normalized associated Legendre functions P sub nm were studied to provide a rational basis for the truncation of the geopotential series in spherical harmonics in various orbital analyses. The conjecture is made that the largest maximum of the normalized associated Legendre function lies in the interval which indicates the greatest integer function. A procedure is developed for verifying this conjecture. An on-line algebraic manipulator, IAM, is used to implement the procedure and the verification is carried out for all n equal to or less than 2m, for m = 1 through 6. A rigorous proof of the conjecture is not available.

Estimation of bounds for the geopotential coefficients

A numerical analysis of zonal geopotential coefficients and the bounds on the tesseral coefficients is presented. Modifications designed to incorporate data on the earth's density distribution are developed. The nature of the modifications and the application are discussed.

Monte Carlo investigation of transient acoustic fields in partially or completely bounded medium

A simple repetitive calculation was used to investigate what happens to the field in terms of the signal paths of disturbances originating from the energy source. The computation allowed the field to be reconstructed as a function of space and time on a statistical basis. The suggested Monte Carlo method is in response to the need for a numerical method to supplement analytical methods of solution which are only valid when the boundaries have simple shapes, rather than for a medium that is bounded. For the analysis, a suitable model was created from which was developed an algorithm for the estimation of acoustic pressure variations in the region under investigation. The validity of the technique was demonstrated by analysis of simple physical models with the aid of a digital computer. The Monte Carlo method is applicable to a medium which is homogeneous and is enclosed by either rectangular or curved boundaries.

Sound-absorbing slabs and structures based on granular materials (bound and unbound)

Sound absorbing slabs and structures made up of bound or unbound granular materials are considered and how to manufacture these elements at the building site. The raw material is a single grain powder (sand, expanded blast furnace slag, etc.) that imparts to the end products an apparent porosity of 25-45% and an energy dissipation within the structure leading to absorption coefficients that can be compared with those of mineral wool and urethane.

Function space quasi-Newton algorithms for optimal control problems with bounded controls and singular arcs

Two existing function space algorithms, Davidon and projected gradient, are modified so that they may handle directly control variable inequality constraints. A third quasi-Newton type algorithm developed by C. G. Broyden is extended to optimal control problems. The Broyden algorithm is further modified so that it also may handle directly control variable inequality constraints. These methods along with a pure gradient and two conjugate gradient algorithms are simulated on three relatively simple yet representative bounded control problems, two of which have singular subarcs. Overall the Broyden algorithm was found to be superior. The most notable result of the study was the clear superiority of the Broyden and Davidon algorithms in producing a sharp interior control subarc.

Two-dimensional radiative equilibrium of a gray medium in a plane layer bounded by gray nonisothermal walls

Radiative equilibrium temperature and surface heat flux distributions are calculated for an absorbing-emitting gray medium in an infinite plane layer bounded by gray diffuse walls with arbitrary temperature distributions. Superposition is used to obtain the solution for the differential approximation, which yields good accuracy for the optically thick medium. To also obtain accurate results for optically thin and intermediate regimes, the differential approximation is subsequently improved by a number of geometrical parameters, which are derived from the exact expression for the intensity. As an example, the case of constant temperature at the upper wall and a temperature step at the lower wall without heat generation in the medium is presented. Comparison with other available results shows excellent agreement.

Lower bounds to energies for cusped-gaussian wavefunctions

Calculations for the ground states of H, He, and Be, conducted by Steiner and Sykes (1972), show that the inclusion of a very small number of cusp functions can lead to a substantial enhancement of the quality of the Gaussian basis used in molecular wavefunction computations. The properties of the cusped-Gaussian basis are investigated by a calculation of lower bounds concerning the ground state energy of the hydrogen atom.

Reversal-bounded multipushdown machines

Several representations of the recursively enumerable (r.e.) sets are presented. The first states that every r.e. set is the homomorphic image of the intersection of two linear context-free languages. The second states that every r.e. set is accepted by an on-line Turing acceptor with two pushdown stores such that in every computation, each pushdown store can make at most one reversal (that is, one change from 'pushing' to 'popping'). It is shown that this automata theoretic representation cannot be strengthened by restricting the acceptors to be deterministic multitape, nondeterministic one-tape, or nondeterministic multicounter acceptors. This provides evidence that reversal bounds are not a natural measure of computational complexity for multitape Turing acceptors.

Transversely bounded DFB lasers

Bounded distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers are studied in detail. Threshold gain and field distribution for a number of configurations are derived and analyzed. More specifically, the thin-film guide, fiber, diffusion guide, and hollow channel with inhomogeneous-cladding DFB lasers are considered. Optimum points exist and must be used in DFB laser design. Different-modes feedback and the effects of the transverse boundaries are included. A number of applications are also discussed.

Radiative equilibrium in a rectangular enclosure bounded by gray walls

Two-dimensional temperature and heat-flux distributions are calculated for an absorbing-emitting gray medium at radiative equilibrium in a rectangular enclosure. The bounding walls are gray and diffuse with arbitrary surface-temperature distributions, and heat generation may take place inside the medium. As a first approximation, the problem is solved for optically thick systems (differential approximation). These results are subsequently improved by the introduction of a number of geometrical parameters to yield good accuracy for all optical thicknesses. As examples, two cases are discussed in detail: (1) uniform heat generation in a black enclosure, and (2) an enclosure with one gray surface at constant temperature. Comparison with some numerical solutions generated by Hottel's /Hottel and Cohen (1958) and Einstein (1963)/ zonal method shows excellent agreement.
