Space shuttle experiments on Al-In liquid phase miscibility gap (LPMG) alloys

Massive phase separation observed at low-g was studied during the phase separation process while cooling through the miscibility gap under a controlled thermal gradient was investigated. The molten drops which form during the phase separation process appear to move in a direction opposite to that predicted by the theory of thermocapillary droplet motion. A second experiment utilized a plunger arrangement designed to eliminate the surface tension driven convection currents originating at a free surface. This experiment suggests that the free surface does contribute to the coalescence process but that there are other mechanisms which are more important.

Excess depletion of Al, Ca, Ti from interstellar gas

Thermal condensation, cold sticking, and sputtering by interstellar shock are combined with a chemical memory of the condensation sequence to account for depletion of aluminum, calcium, and titanium in interstellar gas. The extra depletion of aluminum and calcium becomes an indicator of the structural history of the refractory parts of interstellar grains.

Electron and hole impact ionization coefficients in GaAs-Al(x)Ga(1-x)As superlattices

Electron and hole multiplication and impact ionization coefficients have been measured with pure carrier injection in p(+)-n(-)-n(+) diodes grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Values of the electron and hole ionization coefficient ratio alpha/beta = 2-5 are measured for superlattices with well width Lz greater than or equal to 100 A and alpha/beta greater than 10 is measured in a graded band-gap superlattice with a total well and barrier width LB + LZ = 120 A. The ratio decreases and becomes less than unity for smaller well sizes. This is caused by an increase in beta (E) while alpha (E) remains fairly constant. The results have been interpreted by considering varying hole confinement and scattering in the coupled quantum wells.

Selected fretting-wear-resistant coatings for Ti-6 pct Al-4 pct V alloy

The ability of several wear-resistant coatings to reduce fretting in the Ti-6Al-4V alloy is investigated. The experimental apparatus and procedures for evaluating fretting in uncoated Ti-6Al-4V alloy and in the alloy with plasma-sprayed coatings, polymer-bonded coating, and surface treatments are described. The wear volume and wear rate for the alloys are measured and compared. It is concluded that Al2O3 with 13 percent TiO2, preoxidation and nitride surface treatments, and MoS2 sputtering result in wear-resistant surfaces; however, the polyimide coating is the most wear resistant coating in both dry and moist air, and it causes the least wear to the uncoated alloy surface.

Microstructure/mechanical property relationships for various thermal treatments of Al-Cu-Mg-X PM aluminum alloys

The thermal response and aging behavior of three 2XXX-series powder metallurgy aluminum alloys have been investigated, using Rockwell B hardness measurements, optical and electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive chemical analysis, in order to correlate microstructure with measured mechanical properties. Results of the thermal response study indicated that an increased solution heat treatment temperature was effective in resolutionizing large primary constituents in the alloy bearing more copper but had no apparent effect on the microconstituents of the other two. Aging studies conducted at room temperature and at 120, 150, and 180 C for times ranging up to 60 days indicated that classic aging response curves, as determined by hardness measurements, occurred at lower aging temperatures than were previously studied for these alloys, as well as at lower aging temperatures than are commonly used for ingot metallurgy alloys of similar compositions. Microstructural examination and fracture surface analysis of peak-aged tension specimens indicated that the highest tensile strengths are associated with extremely fine and homogeneous distributions of theta-prime or S-prime phases combined with low levels of both large constituent particles and dispersoids. Examination of the results suggest that refined solution heat treatments and lower aging temperatures may be necessary to achieve optimum mechanical properties for these 2XXX series alloys.

Microstructure and Aging of Powder-Metallurgy Al Alloys

Report describes experimental study of thermal responses and aging behaviors of three new aluminum alloys. Alloys produced from rapidly solidified powders and contain 3.20 to 5.15 percent copper, 0.24 to 1.73 percent magnesium, 0.08 to 0.92 percent iron, and smaller amounts of manganese, nickel, titanium, silicon, and zinc. Peak hardness achieved at lower aging temperatures than with standard ingot-metallurgy alloys. Alloys of interest for automobile, aircraft, and aerospace applications.

Interfaces and failure mechanisms in Al-SiC composites

Aluminum alloys reinforced with silicon carbide whiskers exhibit significantly higher strength and modulus than the unreinforced alloys. However, the composites also exhibit low ductility and poor fracture toughness for reasons which are not well-understood. In this study, high resolution and conventional TEM techniques are used to analyze interface microstructure and failure mechanisms in P/M 2124 and 6061 aluminum alloys reinforced with silicon carbide whiskers. Interfacial oxides are typical of both composite materials, often distributed in clusters or in a discrete layer 2-5 nm thick along the whisker-matrix interface. Highly deformed regions beneath bulk tensile fracture surfaces reveal possible fracture nucleation centers as well as sites of stress concentration where intense plastic strain has occurred. Observations of such highly deformed regions include (1) void initiation at whisker ends, (2) interface decohesion involving the thin oxide layer, (3) transverse cracks in whiskers, and (4) cracks in large constituent particles. TEM results are presented and discussed in relation to mechanisms of composite failure.

Double layers in plasmas; Proceedings of the Conference, Huntsville, AL, Mar. 1986

Papers are presented on such topics as double layers (DLs) and plasma-wave resistivity in extragalactic jets; the formation of a DL leading to the critical velocity phenomenon; formation mechanisms of laboratory DLs in triple plasma devices; and linear Vlasov stability in one-dimensional DLs. Consideration is also given to weak DLs in the auroral ionosphere; the dynamical properties of very strong DLs in a triple plasma device; particle simulation of auroral DLs; a muonic X-ray laser assisted by the catalyzed fusion of deuterium and tritium; and the feasbility of measuring the nuclear reaction cross sections at energies of several keV in a target under laser compression.

Precipitation in a rapidly solidified and aged Ni-Al-Mo alloy

The early stages of decomposition of a highly supersaturated nickel-base alloy have been studied using TEM, SEM, and X-ray diffraction. The material was produced as a metastable solid solution by chill-block melt-spinning. On aging, the material exhibited a number of decomposition products appearing in series or concomitantly. Some of the decomposition products of this alloy, Ni4Mo, Ni3Mo, and Ni2Mo, are related to those found in Ni-Mo binary alloys. Alpha-Mo formed during solidification was distinguished from that formed by precipitation in the solid state by orientation relationships.

Index of refraction of GaAs-Al(x)Ga(1-x)As superlattices and multiple quantum wells

A theoretical study of the index of refraction of superlattices and its variation as a function of frequency and the superlattice parameters, i.e., layer width and AlAs composition, is presented. Gamma-region exciton and valence-band mixing effects are included in the model. It is found that these two effects have an important influence on the value of the index of refraction and that superstructure effects rapidly decrease for energies greater than the superlattice potential barriers. Because of the quasi-two-dimensional character of the Gamma-region excitons, the results indicate that the superlattice index of refraction can vary by about two percent at the quantized, bound-exciton, transition energies. Overall, the theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Ultralow threshold graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure single quantum well (Al, Ga) As lasers

Broad area graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure single quantum well lasers grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) with threshold current density as low as 93 A/sq cm (520 microns long) have been fabricated. Buried lasers formed from similarly structured MBE material with liquid phase epitaxy regrowth had threshold currents at submilliampere levels when high reflectivity coatings were applied to the end facets. A CW threshold current of 0.55 mA was obtained for a laser with facet reflectivities of about 80 percent, a cavity length of 120 micron, and an active region stripe width of 1 micron. These devices driven directly with logic level signals have switch-on delays less than 50 ps without any current prebias. Such lasers permit fully on-off switching while at the same time obviating the need for bias monitoring and feedback control.

Directional solidification of Al-Ni/SiC composites during parabolic trajectories

Aluminum-6.1 wt. pct. nickel-silicon carbide composites containing varying volume fractions and particle sizes of SiC were directionally solidified at different translation rates and temperature gradients, under variable gravity levels. High-gravity, high-volume fractions of particles or high effective viscosity of liquid favored the engulfment of particles by the melt interface. Solidification under low gravity seemed to deflocculate the SiC particle agglomerates, while opposite results were obtained when solidifying under high gravity. Intercellular spacings were higher under low gravity solidfication.
