Miniature TOC Analyzer using Tunable Laser Spectroscopy and Combustion

Measurement of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) is an important tool on manned spaceflight missions for determining water quality. TOC quantification can be accomplished by oxidizing dissolved organic carbon to carbon dioxide (CO2) and analyzing the CO2 after volatilization. For human spaceflight applications, size, weight, and power need to be minimized while maintaining high sensitivity and accuracy. To this end, a tunable laser spectrometer tuned to measure CO2 was coupled to a miniature combustion reactor and the performance of the system for measuring the TOC was assessed. This combined system can be potentially reduced to around 1000 cm3 while offering the benefit afforded by combustion of converting all organics to CO2.

Tunable Pseudocapacitive Intercalation of Chloroaluminate Anions into Graphite Electrodes for Rechargeable Aluminum Batteries

Rechargeable aluminum-graphite batteries using chloroaluminate-containing electrolytes have been the focus of significant research, particularly due to their high-rate capabilities. Engineered graphite electrodes have been shown to exhibit supercapacitor-like rate performance, despite the fact they store charge via the electrochemical intercalation of polyatomic AlCl4− anions. However, the origins of such rate capabilities are not well understood. Here, using electrochemical techniques, we disentangle quantitatively the diffusion-limited Faradaic, pseudocapacitive, and capacitive contributions to charge storage, revealing that AlCl4− anions intercalate into graphite with significant pseudocapacitive characteristics due to low ion diffusion limitations. Pristine and mildly exfoliated graphites are compared, where exfoliation resulted in significantly higher pseudocapacitive AlCl4− intercalation at the highest potential redox pair as well as higher galvanostatic capacity retention at faster discharge rates. The relationships between graphite structure, ion mass transport, and the overall rate of electrochemical AlCl4− intercalation are discussed. Ion diffusion within the electrolyte phase of the porous electrode is shown to play a key role in controlling the rate of intercalation at higher potentials and faster rates, which can be enhanced by reducing electrode tortuosity. The results establish that chloroaluminate anion intercalation into graphite exhibits non-diffusion-limited pseudocapacitive contributions that are tunable by modifying the graphite structure.

A Concept of Operations for Tunable Optical Orbital Power Beaming to the Lunar Surface

The provision of power for the survival of lunar night and in permanently shadowed regions are two of the major inhibitors of exploration and habitation on the lunar surface. Orbital power beaming provides the flexibility necessary for a variety of surface clients including - Commercial Lunar Payload Systems (CLPS) landers, Lunar Terrain Vehicles (LTVs), and pressurized & unpressurized rovers. Operation at key optical frequencies along with spot size & power tuning capabilities allows for compatibility with current solar array technology with little augmentation required on the client side. Through STK analysis, key orbits have been selected and a generalized concept of operations has been conceptualized in order to better understand the benefits and expectations of a long-range tunable optical power beaming laser system.

Feed-forward spectral calibration methodology for line-scanned tunable laser absorption spectroscopy

A generalized feed-forward method for accurate tunable laser absorption spectroscopy includes generating a laser beam. The generated laser beam is directed down a reference path and a test/sample path. One or more parameters are extracted from the reference path. The one or more parameters, extracted from the reference path, are used as feed-forward, to adjust spectral analysis of the test/sample path to detect a composition and/or concentration of an analyte gas within the test/sample path. The extraction of the one or more parameters from the reference path and the spectral analysis of the test/sample path are performed substantially concurrently.

High Efficiency Travelling Wave X-Band Linac With Tunable Output Energy

We are designing a compact and efficient electron linac with 500 W of average beam power and beam energy tunable from 5 to 10 MeV. The accelerator is of travelling wave type, and has little RF power reflected back to the RF source, eliminating the need for a large, lossy isolator. The structure is powered by a compact commercial 1.7 MW 9.3 GHz magnetron. To vary the beam energy we will change the current from the triode gun. We present an analysis of the structure, which includes varying the length from 60 cm to 80 cm, and the structure type, such as constant impedance versus constant gradient.

Electrically tunable metasurfaces incorporating a phase change material

Electrically tunable metasurfaces including an array of subwavelength metasurface unit elements are presented. The unit elements include a stacked metal-insulator-metal structure within which an active phase change layer is included. A purely insulator, metal, or coexisting metal-insulator phase of the active layer can be electrically controlled to tune an amplitude and phase response of the metasurfaces. In combination with the subwavelengths dimensions of the unit elements, the phase and amplitude response can be controlled in a range from optical wavelengths to millimeter wavelength of incident light. Electrical control of the unit elements can be provided via resistive heating produced by flow of current though a top metal layer of the unit elements. Alternatively, electrical control of the unit elements can be provided via electrical field effect produced by applying a voltage differential between the top and bottom metal layers of the unit elements.

MEMS-tunable optical ring resonator

A microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-tunable optical ring resonator is described herein. The ring resonator includes a resonator ring and a tuner ring, along with one or more springs. The springs may be internal or external, i.e., either within or outside the areal footprint of the resonator ring and the tuner ring. The one or more springs are configured to displace the tuner ring from the resonator ring by a desired gap based upon a desired resonant wavelength of the resonator ring. Tuning is implemented by applying a voltage to the ring resonator, with motion of the tuner ring causing a corresponding change in the effective index of the resonator ring. As the ring resonator is essentially a capacitive device, it draws very little power once tuning is achieved.

The Triplet Energy of both materials in the mixed interlayer can be higher than the Triplet Energies of the R and G phosphorescent dopants. The HOMOs of both materials in the mixed interlayer are more negative than the HOMO of the host in the yellow unit but less negative than the HOMO of the host in the blue unit. The LUMOs of the materials in the mixed interlayer can be more negative than the LUMO of the host in the yellow unit but less negative than the LUMO of the host in the blue unit. The OLED lighting device is spectrally tunable according to the supplied power.

Oblique Packing and Tunable Excitonic Coupling in DNA‐Templated Squaraine Rotaxane Dimer Aggregates

Abstract When molecules are aggregated such that their excited states form delocalized excitons, their spatial arrangement, or packing, can be coarsely controlled by templating and finely controlled by chemical substitution; however, challenges remain in controlling their packing on intermediate length scales. Here, we use an approach based on mechanically interlocked molecules to promote an elusive oblique packing arrangement in a series of three squaraine rotaxane dimers. We template the squaraine rotaxane dimers using DNA and observe two excitonically split bands of near‐equal intensity in their absorption spectra – a distinct signature of oblique packing, validated by theoretical modeling of the experimental results. Additional fine control of packing is demonstrated by fluorinating the macrocycle of the rotaxane, which promotes denser packing and stronger excitonic interactions.

Tunable Magnetic Labyrinth for Abrikosov Vortices

We study Abrikosov vortex dynamics in a superconducting layer covered with an array of T- and I-shaped magnetically soft permalloy elements. Application of the in-plane field H // polarizes thin permalloy bars forming the array and creates a periodic network of mutually perpendicular lines of the attractive or repulsive magnetic potential for vortices along the bar edges, which can be easily tuned by the rotation of H // . Magneto-optical imaging of the vortex trajectories confirms that such a reconfigurable magnetic potential dominates the vortex motion in a wide temperature range and can be a useful tool for manipulating vortices in fluxonic devices for low-loss microelectronics.
