A Hybrid Optimization and Deep Learning Algorithm for Cyber-Resilient DER Control

With the proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the distribution grid, it is a challenge to effectively control a large number of DERs resilient to the communication and security disruptions, as well as to provide the online grid services, such as voltage regulation and virtual power plant (VPP) dispatch. To this end, a hybrid feedback-based optimization algorithm along with deep learning forecasting technique is proposed to specifically address the cyber-related issues. The online decentralized feedback-based DER optimization control requires timely, accurate voltage measurement from the grid. However, in practice such information may not be received by the control center or even be corrupted. Therefore, the long short-term memory (LSTM) deep learning algorithm is employed to forecast delayed/missed/attacked messages with high accuracy. The IEEE 37-node feeder with high penetration of PV systems is used to validate the efficiency of the proposed hybrid algorithm. The results show that 1) the LSTM-forecasted lost voltage can effectively improve the performance of the DER control algorithm in the practical cyber-physical architecture; and 2) the LSTM forecasting strategy outperforms other strategies of using previous message and skipping dual parameter update.

Deep Learning Denoiser

SAND2022-14744 O The Deep Learning Denoiser uses a trained deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model to decompose an input waveform into a signal and noise waveform. In the approach, the CNN provides a signal mask and a noise mask for an input signal. The Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) of the estimated signal is obtained by multiplying the signal mask with the STFT of the input signal. Atrial Model Development and Prototype Simulations; Final Report for CRADA No. TC02224.0

This project was a collaborative effort between Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC as manager and operator of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Amgen, Inc. ("Amgen"), to develop a capability to computationally evaluate the importance and roles of different ion channels in atrial fibrillation. The first phase of this collaboration was to implement the atrial model, run prototype simulations, and analyze the results. Two No-Cost Time Extension (NCTE) requests were executed for this project. The first NCTE was executed on April 1, 2016, and extended the CRADA project for an additional two months to allow enough time to complete the tasks and deliverables, due to a delay in the start of the project. A second NCTE was executed on June 28, 2016, extending the project by three months, through November 3, 2016, to allow enough time to complete the final tasks and deliverables as well as negotiate a CRADA extension. The actual duration of this project was fourteen months. Amgen was unable to obtain budget approval to extend the CRADA past November 3, 2016. All of the deliverables for this CRADA project were successfully completed according to schedule.

Creating a Training Dataset for Semantic Segmentation of Canal Networks for Irrigation Modernization

Canal infrastructure has provided critical irrigation water to the western United States for over a century. To continue providing vital water resources to the semi-arid West, irrigation systems must undergo maintenance and modernization. Many canal companies are resource-constrained, and because funding opportunities often require detailed knowledge of existing infrastructure, they can struggle to secure financial capital. We address this problem by creating training data for a semantic segmentation deep learning model to map canal networks throughout the western United States. To create a diverse and robust training dataset, we labelled 1-m NAIP imagery with the locations of no canals, wet canals, and dry/vegetated canals. Since creating these datasets is time consuming, we first developed a preprocessing methodology to identify canals within our four study areas. We used NAIP imagery and provided canal centerline data to buffer, standardize, and cluster the imagery, automating the labeling process as much as possible. However, this still required manual cleaning and manual classification of canal type. Challenges arose when canals were interrupted (e.g., road culverts or piped sections) or when nearby features shared similar characteristics (e.g., irrigated fields, trees, and shadows). Combining automated preprocessing with manual refinement produced four detailed canal masks to be used in the semantic segmentation model developed by Richard Tapia.

Implementation Aspects of Smart Grids Cyber-Security Cross-Layered Framework for Critical Infrastructure Operation

Communication networks in power systems are a major part of the smart grid paradigm. It enables and facilitates the automation of power grid operation as well as self-healing in contingencies. Such dependencies on communication networks, though, create a roam for cyber-threats. An adversary can launch an attack on the communication network, which in turn reflects on power grid operation. Attacks could be in the form of false data injection into system measurements, flooding the communication channels with unnecessary data, or intercepting messages. Using machine learning-based processing on data gathered from communication networks and the power grid is a promising solution for detecting cyber threats. In this paper, a co-simulation of cyber-security for cross-layer strategy is presented. The advantage of such a framework is the augmentation of valuable data that enhances the detection as well as identification of anomalies in the operation of the power grid. The framework is implemented on the IEEE 118-bus system. The system is constructed in Mininet to simulate a communication network and obtain data for analysis. A distributed three controller software-defined networking (SDN) framework is proposed that utilizes the Open Network Operating System (ONOS) cluster. According to the findings of our suggested architecture, it outperforms a single SDN controller framework by a factor of more than ten times the throughput. This provides for a higher flow of data throughout the network while decreasing congestion caused by a single controller’s processing restrictions. Furthermore, our CECD-AS approach outperforms state-of-the-art physics and machine learning-based techniques in terms of attack classification. The performance of the framework is investigated under various types of communication attacks.

Tikiri—Towards a lightweight blockchain for IoT

Internet of Things (IoT) platforms have been deployed in several domains to enhance efficiency of business process and improve productivity. Most IoT platforms comprise of heterogeneous software and hardware components which can potentially introduce security and privacy challenges. Blockchain technology has been proposed as one of the solutions to realize IoT security by leveraging the (a) Immutable ledger, (b) Decentralized architecture and (c) Strong cryptography primitives. However, integrating blockchain platforms with IoT based applications presents several challenges due to lack of (a) acceptable performance on resource-constrained devices, (b) high transaction throughput, (c) keyword-based search and retrieve, (d) transaction back pressure operations, and (e) real-time response. In this paper, we propose a lightweight blockchain platform, “Tikiri”, for resource-constrained IoT devices. Tikiri uses Apache Kafka for the consensus and proposes new blockchain architecture to handle real-time transaction execution on the blockchain. Tikiri is characterized by functional programming and actor-based smart contract platform that realizes concurrent execution of transactions in the blockchain. Tikiri realizes a lightweight and scalable blockchain that can provides performance on the resource-constrained IoT devices.

Behavior Engine - Umbra Package

The Umbra Behavior Engine allows simulated Umbra characters to autonomously make decisions to accomplish goals set for them in a specific scenario. These goals are based on commands given to characters and reactions to stimuli in the simulated environment of the characters. When the character responds to the command issued to him, instead of running a single behavior, he runs a suite of behaviors where only one is active at a time. Other behaviors in the suite include reaction behaviors that can be triggered due to detected objects and activity in the characters' environment. Thinking the Other Unthinkable: Disarmament in North Korea and Beyond

The P5 have defined nuclear disarmament as both a process and an end state. Differences of view about the latter are sharp, bitter, and abiding. This has stripped the discussion about the former of much of its potential content and value. Where might we get, practically and conceptually, if we were to set aside for now questions about the ultimate feasibility and desirability of the long-term goal and focus instead on the process? Further, what if we were also to posit that there will be no “fundamental transformation” of the international political system of a kind that would make the nuclear-armed states, and their unarmed neighbors, unconcerned about the effectiveness of mechanisms for peace and security in a disarmed and disarming world? In this context, might it be possible to give states the confidence they would require to take more ambitious incremental steps on the disarmament pathway? How could such steps contribute to the relaxation of international tensions that the NPT itself describes as a critical enabler of disarmament? These questions motivate this timely and innovative new work by Toby Dalton and George Perkovich of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Their core objective is to “infuse needed realism into disarmament discussions.” Using North Korean disarmament as a test case, they explore a series of practical challenges and associated conceptual issues to frame a discussion of the possible disarming nucleararmed states. They begin by rightly noting that neither the advocates of the Ban treaty nor the advocates of North Korean disarmament have set our practical agendas for achieving their aims. They conclude that without an infusion of realism the “two polarized blocks” will continue to “stonewall and repel each other” and thus that “the risks of global nuclear disorder will grow.” This is the latest in the series of Livermore Papers begun in 2017 to stimulate the development of new strategic thought on emerging nuclear challenges. Conceptually, it is a follow-on to the inaugural Livermore Paper by Lewis Dunn on disarmament pathways. The views expressed in these papers are those of the authors and should not be attributed to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory or any of its sponsors.

Monitoring the Structural Health of the Stage-Four Gibbs Resistor In Order to Maintain a Functioning Pulse-Forming Network

The Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a critical facility used for nuclear weapons research and development (Los Alamos National Laboratory). Its primary function is to provide high-resolution, real-time images of the behavior of materials under extreme conditions, specifically during the hydrodynamic testing of nuclear weapons surrogates. The facility uses advanced radiographic techniques, such as dual-axis X-ray imaging, to capture detailed snapshots of these materials as they react to high-pressure environments. DARHT plays a key role in maintaining the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, supporting the Stockpile Stewardship Program. The facility helps ensure that nuclear weapons perform as designed without the need for nuclear tests. Its dual-axis radiography provides more precise data than traditional single-axis imaging, offering a comprehensive view of the internal dynamics of a weapon's primary stage.

Revolutionizing Waste Management: AI-Powered Real-Time Characterization for Efficient Handling of Non-Recyclable Municipal Solid Waste

According to EPA, -300 MM tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) was available in the US as of 2018. Of that total material, nearly 50% was landfilled resulting in a significant loss for the potential to convert its energy value into cost effective and sustainable biofuels. Redirecting this material away from the landfill and into conversion ready feedstock for energy generation can directly address DOE's selling price < $2.50/GGE while securing the US national energy independence [1]. However, the paramount challenges in any rational fuel conversion strategy are understanding the chemical makeup, quality and associated calorific value of the MSW. Understanding these parameters is critical in achieving any acceptable fuel conversion and requires rapid characterization followed by accurate separation technologies. Therefore, we are proposing to address the rapid characterization by building a non-invasive, rapid, and highly accurate Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled spectrometric/optical approach augmented with multi-sensory information for advanced characterization of domestic heterogeneous MSW. North Carolina State University (NCSU) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in partnership with strong support from the Town of Cary and IBM, Inc., will closely work together to implement this ground-breaking technology for the effective characterization of MSW for sustainable and affordable production of conversion-ready feedstocks, while solving the environment issue of planetary proportions.

Measuring the robustness of predictive probability for early stopping in two-group comparisons

We report physical experiments are often expensive and time-consuming. Test engineers must certify the compatibility of aircraft and their weapon systems before they can be deployed in the field, but the testing required is time consuming, expensive, and resource limited. Adopting Bayesian adaptive designs is a promising way to borrow from the successes seen in the clinical trials domain. The use of predictive probability (PP) to stop testing early and make faster decisions is particularly appealing given the aforementioned constraints. Given the high-consequence nature of the tests performed in the national security space, a strong understanding of new methods is required before being deployed. Although PP has been thoroughly studied for binary data, there is less work with continuous data, where many reliability studies are interested in certifying the specification limits of components. A simulation study evaluating the robustness of this approach indicates early stopping based on PP is reasonably robust to minor assumption violations, especially when only a few interim analyses are conducted. The simulation study also compares PP to conditional power, showing its relative strengths and weaknesses. A post-hoc analysis exploring whether release requirements of a weapon system from an aircraft are within specification with desired reliability resulted in stopping the experiment early and saving 33% of the experimental runs.

Enhanced Power Grid Maintenance Planning and Quantum-Inspired Combinatorial Prospects

Efficient and reliable scheduling of maintenance for power generation and transmission infrastructure is essential for minimizing operational costs and ensuring grid stability. This paper introduces an integrated optimization framework for coordinated maintenance scheduling of generators and transmission lines under resource and reliability constraints. The model minimizes a composite cost function including maintenance and generation costs, as well as penalties for delayed maintenance, while satisfying N−1 security constraints, operational limits, and crew availability. Case studies on the IEEE 300-bus test system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in producing feasible and cost-effective maintenance schedules. To address scalability and combinatorial complexity, the model is mapped into a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problem, enabling exploration of solution approaches based on Quantum Imaginary Time Evolution (QITE). While the QUBO reformulation provides a foundation for future quantum-inspired optimization, this study focuses primarily on the development and demonstration of the classical optimization framework and illustrates the potential applicability of QITE in large-scale maintenance scheduling.

Applying Compression-Based Metrics to Seismic Data in Support of Global Nuclear Explosion Monitoring

The analysis of seismic data for evidence of possible nuclear explosion testing is a critical global security mission that relies heavily on human expertise to identify and mark seismic signals embedded in background noise. To assist analysts in making these determinations, we adapted two compression distance metrics for use with seismic data. First, we demonstrated that the Normalized Compression Distance (NCD) metric can be adapted for use with waveform data and can identify the arrival times of seismic signals. Then we tested an approximation for the NCD called Sliding Information Distance (SLID), which can be computed much faster than NCD. We assessed the accuracy of the SLID output by comparing it to both the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and the judgments of expert seismic analysts. Our results indicate that SLID effectively identifies arrival times and provides analysts with useful information that can aid their analysis process.

Comparative Effects of Radiation Sterilization Modality on Medical PVC Tubing

As the production volume of single-use, polymer-based medical devices increases each year, so does the need for throughput capacity to sterilize the devices. Around 80% of radiation-sterilized devices are processed using gamma-ray radiation from industrial cobalt-60 sources. Supply chain, security, and disposal concerns are prompting manufacturers and contract sterilizers to explore alternatives to irradiation using cobalt-60 gamma-rays, such as electron beam (E-beam) and X-ray radiation. Advantages of these ‘machine’ sources over radioisotope-based sources are that they do not decay, a characteristic that requires cobalt-60 to be replaced over time, they can be turned off when not in use, and they do not represent the same level of concern regarding misuse. One of the barriers to direct transition from gamma-ray sterilization to E-beam or X-ray sterilization is concern over the relatively unknown effects of sterilization dose of these alternative modalities on the performance of medical device polymers. Commercially available medical devices sterilized with gamma-ray irradiation exhibit acceptable device function, acceptable mechanical performance, and acceptable discoloration. To be viable, alternate sterilization methods must not only achieve acceptable sterilization, but the process must also result in a product with functional, mechanical, and visual effects acceptable to customers and the regulator. Flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a plastic material that is commonly found in single-use medical devices and is known for its sensitivity to radiation processing. For instance, transparent PVC is known to yellow upon irradiation. To encouraging sterilization alternatives to cobalt-60 gamma-ray, we directly compared the effects of gamma-ray, E-beam, and X-ray radiation exposure at similar sterilization-relevant doses on key properties of medical grade PVC tubing.
