Realizing the potentials of density functional theory (DFT) and of the materials genome initiative (MGI)

Abstract From 1964 and 1965 to present, the wide spread utilization of an incomplete density functional theory (DFT) has led to mixed results: The second theorem of the theory asserts that the energy functional reaches its minimum if the calculation employs the ground state charge density—without providing a mechanism for finding this density. Calculations purporting to employ DFT have mostly assumed that results obtained with a judiciously selected basis set, following self-consistent iterations, are those of the ground state. The state obtained with a single basis set is a stationary one, among an infinite number of such states, with no proven relation to the actual ground state of the material. Most failures or limitations of the incomplete DFT can be traced to this error. We present results from calculations using the completed DFT. They are in excellent agreement with experiment and portend the realization of the Materials Genome Initiative.

Chiral gauge theories on $R^3 \times S^1$ and SUSY breaking

We study SU(5) S U ( 5 ) chiral gauge theories on R^3\times S^1 R 3 × S 1 . With an unequal number of fundamental and antifundmental matter representations we calculate nontrivial pre-ADS superpotentials generated by composite multi-monopoles. We also point out that the structure of the composite multi-monopoles can be determined simply from the affine Dynkin diagrams of the gauge group and its unbroken subgroup. For the case of one flavor, we find that the superpotential is independent of the composite meson. We show that dynamical 4D SUSY breaking in the simplest chiral SU(5) S U ( 5 ) gauge theory can be demonstrated directly via semi-classical effects on the circle.

Higher-form symmetry and chiral transport in real-time Abelian lattice gauge theory

We study classical lattice simulations of theories of electrodynamics coupled to charged matter at finite temperature, interpreting them using the higher-form symmetry formulation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We compute transport coefficients using classical Kubo formulas on the lattice and show that the properties of the simulated plasma are in complete agreement with the predictions from effective field theories. In particular, the higher-form formulation allows us to understand from hydrodynamic considerations the relaxation rate of axial charge in the chiral plasma observed in previous simulations. A key point is that the resistivity of the plasma – defined in terms of Kubo formulas for the electric field in the 1-form formulation of MHD – remains a well-defined and predictive quantity at strong electromagnetic coupling. However, the Kubo formulas used to define the conventional conductivity vanish at low frequencies due to electrodynamic fluctuations, and thus the concept of the conductivity of a gauged electric current must be interpreted with care.

More exotic field theories in 3+1 dimensions

We continue the exploration of nonstandard continuum field theories related to fractons in 3+1 dimensions. Our theories exhibit exotic global and gauge symmetries, defects with restricted mobility, and interesting dualities. Depending on the model, the defects are the probe limits of either fractonic particles, strings, or strips. One of our models is the continuum limit of the plaquette Ising lattice model, which features an important role in the construction of the X-cube model.

Lattice Clifford fractons and their Chern-Simons-like theory

We use Dirac matrix representations of the Clifford algebra to build fracton models on the lattice and their effective Chern-Simons-like theory. As an example, we build lattice fractons in odd D spatial dimensions and their (D+1) spacetime dimensional effective theory. The model possesses an anti-symmetric K matrix resembling that of hierarchical quantum Hall states. The gauge charges are conserved in sub-dimensional manifolds which ensures the fractonic behavior. The construction extends to any lattice fracton model built from commuting projectors and with tensor products of spin-1/2 degrees of freedom at the sites.

QIS for Applied Quantum Field Theory

Precision predictions in HEP and non-equilibrium dynamics in the early universe require quantum computational technologies. Future quantum devices offer the possibility of performing these, complementing lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) studies on classical computers. We are investigating many aspects of the quantum simulation of quantum field theories. Specific topics include simulation-suitable formulations of gauge theories, state preparation, time evolution, extracting HEP-related observables from simulations, quantum error correction (QEC), and entanglement. We are exploring strategies for simulation of scattering in QFTs, and dynamics of the early Universe.

A Unified Theory of Fractional Nonlocal and Weighted Nonlocal Vector Calculus

Nonlocal and fractional-order models capture effects that classical partial differential equations cannot describe; for this reason, they are suitable for a broad class of engineering and scientific applications that feature multiscale or anomalous behavior. This has driven a desire for a vector calculus that includes nonlocal and fractional gradient, divergence and Laplacian type operators, as well as tools such as Green's identities, to model subsurface transport, turbulence, and conservation laws. In the literature, several independent definitions and theories of nonlocal and fractional vector calculus have been put forward. Some have been studied rigorously and in depth, while others have been introduced ad-hoc for specific applications. The goal of this work is to provide foundations for a unified vector calculus by (1) consolidating fractional vector calculus as a special case of nonlocal vector calculus, (2) relating unweighted and weighted Laplacian operators by introducing an equivalence kernel, and (3) proving a form of Green's identity to unify the corresponding variational frameworks for the resulting nonlocal volume-constrained problems. The proposed framework goes beyond the analysis of nonlocal equations by supporting new model discovery, establishing theory and interpretation for a broad class of operators, and providing useful analogues of standard tools from the classical vector calculus.

Discovering the nature of neutrinos: How nuclear theory will advance this grand endeavor. Final report

Why is there more matter than antimatter in the visible universe? Are neutrinos their own antiparticles? These are some of the most profound questions in science. The detection of a (0vββ) neutrinoless doublebeta decay and the measurement of its half-life is one of the most important experimental endeavors in science because it will answer these questions. Paramount to these measurements are accurate predictions with quantified uncertainties of the 0vββ-decay nuclear transitions, especially for the germanium-76 and xeon-136 nuclei, two candidate materials for building the next generation of DOE funded 0vββ-decay experiments. These predictions will guide the Office of Science’s down selection of experiments as well as aid in determining how much material is needed by these experiments. We studied a specific difficult to assess source of uncertainty that will impact coming microscopic predictions, uncertainty which arises from an incomplete yet systematically improvable model of interactions between nucleons and of nucleons with the other particles involved in decay process, referred to as the theory uncertainty. We employed a surrogate model of the germanium-76 nucleus, and its decay products, just detailed enough to adequately mimic the decaying nucleons need for a reasonable measure of this uncertainty and nothing more, avoiding the immense computational expense required in quantifying uncertainties of the full calculation. We found that microscopic calculations of this process can be expected to achieve relative theory uncertainties around 30%, including an unconstrained contribution that had the potential to spoil microscopic calculations. This results in a nearly order of magnitude on previously estimated uncertainties for this rare decay process.

Accelerating Finite-temperature Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory\ with Deep Neural Networks

We present a numerical modeling workflow based on machine learning (ML) which reproduces the the total energies produced by Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) at finite electronic temperature to within chemical accuracy at negligible computational cost. Based on deep neural networks, our workflow yields the local density of states (LDOS) for a given atomic configuration. From the LDOS, spatially-resolved, energy-resolved, and integrated quantities can be calculated, including the DFT total free energy, which serves as the Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surface for the atoms. We demonstrate the efficacy of this approach for both solid and liquid metals and compare results between independent and unified machine-learning models for solid and liquid aluminum. Our machine-learning density functional theory framework opens up the path towards multiscale materials modeling for matter under ambient and extreme conditions at a computational scale and cost that is unattainable with current algorithms.

Understanding the Applicability of Gas/Particle Partitioning Theory to SOA using Novel Chemically-Speciated Partitioning Measurements (Final Report)

The main objective of this research grant project was to investigate the physical-chemical processes and properties of particles and partitioning gases that influence gas/particle (G/P) partitioning and timescales for equilibration, to directly determine the conditions under which equilibrium G/P partitioning theory can be applied to secondary organic aerosol (SOA). SOA constitutes a major component of submicron particles in the atmosphere, which have important implications for air quality, human and ecosystem health, radiation balance, and climate; however SOA formation, evolution and losses are not well understood. Use of novel on-line measurements of chemically-speciated partitioning measurements of both gas-phase and particle-phase components was a central component to advancing these scientific goals. The key approach was to conduct environmental chamber studies with systems of increasing complexity to determine G/P partitioning rates and equilibrium states for chemically-speciated SOA components. The project builds on our previous work on gas-wall partitioning that must be understood in order to study G/P partitioning in chambers, and to help extrapolate the results to be atmospherically relevant. The goal was to employ measurements and modeling to systematically determine when G/P partitioning theory accurately describes the distribution of oxidized organic compounds in the gas and aerosol phases, and when and why it does not (e.g., aerosol phase-state kinetic limitations, non-ideal mixing, phase separation, oligomer formation,), for chemical and physical conditions typically found throughout the continental boundary layer.

A HPC Theory-Guided Machine Learning Cyberinfrastructure for Communicating Hydrometeorological Data Across Scales

High-resolution predictions of hydrometeorological variables are critical for supporting hydropower generation decisions and flood control at hydroelectric power plants. Traditional climate and hydrologic models rely on the numerical simulation of detailed physical processes. Therefore, running these simulations is time-, labor-, and computation-intensive. Improving the spatial and temporal resolution in these modeling outputs could lead to cubic increases in both the simulation time and computational demands, rendering high-resolution hydrometeorological predictions expensive and impractical. Many past studies apply the super resolution (SR) technique to downscale climate models using deep learners. However, deep learners are deemed “black-boxes,” as their derivation processes from low-resolution outputs to high-resolution outputs are often hidden. Their results are difficult for domain scientists to interpret and validate. Thus, there is a need for an exploratory machine learning approach that can partially integrate domain-specific theory and knowledge into the data-driven mapping process between simulation outputs of different spatial scales. The domain-specific theory and knowledge can be incorporated into the data model through an inductive approach in which process-related environmental variables are used and analyzed as key drivers (i.e., environmental surrogates) to reflect the complex physical processes. Many of these variables, such as land use land cover, soil types, topography, digital elevation, air temperature, and various watershed characteristics, can be directly measured through sensors or remote sensing techniques. Additionally, SR applications that can downscale hydrological and hydrodynamics models to efficiently produce high-resolution (1 m) flood depth grids are still rare. Since the flood depth grid can be used to support critical decisions for flood control operation at hydroelectric power plants, it is crucial to enable an SR-based capability for interpolating high-resolution flood inundation maps.
