The use of a digital computer for investigation of the dynamic characteristics of a man while pressing vertically downward with the straight arm on the handle of a vibrator (instrument)

The dynamic characteristics of a man were investigated by the resonance method, by means of recordings of the amplitude-frequency characteristics of a vibrator straight arm human body system on a standard automatic recorder. Experiments were carried out with a specially constructed vibrator, the moving system of which was fastened to a bronze suspension with small losses. Vibrations of the handle, fastened to the moving system, were recorded with an accelerometer. The mass of the moving system m, rigidity of the suspension k and friction coefficient r of the vibrator (calibration) were determined by exact formulas.

Research on decreasing the noise of a jet

An investigation was conducted to determine the amount of noise reduction that could be obtained by communicating the axial vibrations of the nozzle of a jet engine to the suspension mechanism. Mathematical models were developed to establish the relationship of the parameters. The pressure pulsations in the jet were recorded by measuring microphones and the data were processed by statistical dynamics methods. It was determined that the jet noise spectrum was successfully changed with various mechanical suspension impedances.

Experimental determination of airplane mass and inertial characteristics

Current practices are evaluated for experimentally determining airplane center of gravity, moments of inertia, and products of inertia. The techniques discussed are applicable to bodies other than airplanes. In pitching- and rolling-moment-of-inertia investigations with the airplane mounted on and pivoted about knife edges, the nonlinear spring moments that occur at large amplitudes of oscillation can be eliminated by using the proper spring configuration. The single-point suspension double-pendulum technique for obtaining yawing moments of inertia, products of inertia, and the inclination of the principal axis provides accurate results from yaw-mode oscillation data, provided that the sway-mode effects are minimized by proper suspension rig design. Rocking-mode effects in the data can be isolated.

Early detection of disease program: Evaluation of the cellular immune response

Surfaces of normal, cultured, and mitogen-stimulated mouse lymphoid cells were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Lymphocytes with smooth, highly villous and intermediate surfaces were observed in cell suspensions from both spleens and thymuses of normal mice and from spleens of congenitally athymic (nude) mice. Several strain-specific surface features were noted, including the spine-like appearance of microvilli on C57B1/6 lymphocytes. Although thymus cell suspensions contained somewhat more smooth cells than did spleen cell preparations, lymphocyte derivation could not be inferred from SEM examination. Studies of cells stimulated with mitogenic agents for thymus-derived lymphocytes (concanavalin A) or for bone marrow-derived lymphocytes (lipopolysaccharide) suggested that, in the mouse, development of a complex villous surface is a general concomitant of lymphocyte activation and transformation.

Transition radiation effects in superconducting granules

The paper examines the use of a superheated superconducting suspension as a transition radiation detector of relativistic charged particles. The suspensions would also be used for detecting low-energy X-ray photons. The DESY experiment for developing such a superconducting detector has been carried out at a 7 GeV electron synchrotron. The detection is shown to be based on the recordable flipping of the state of a single superconducting grain.

The manufacture of hydrogen from coal

The conversion of coal to hydrogen is studied from the viewpoint of overall plant efficiency for three different processes: suspension gasification, fluidized-bed gasification, and fluidized steam-iron process. The basic principles of these processes are reviewed, and total energy requirements are estimated and complete energy balances are made for each process, on the assumption that each model plant is self-contained, with no power imported. Overall plant efficiencies for conversion of coal to major gaseous products plus by-products were determined to be: suspension gasification - 57.0%, fluidized-bed gasification - 66.4%, fluidized steam-iron process - 62.6%. Similar results are presented for methane liquefaction from coal using a process design based on hydrogasification, and it is found that conversion of coal to pipeline methane is much more efficient and less expensive than hydrogen conversion if a portion of the coal is converted to synthesis gas and this gas is used to hydrogenate more coal to methane.

Skylab analysis of San Francisco Bay

The distribution and volume of sediment present in suspension during the Skylab 4 overpass for San Pablo Bay and the Carquinez Strait is studied along with the movement and eventual distribution of both natural and dredged sediment in San Francisco Bay. The most useful Skylab sensor film is found to be the S-190B color photography. Changes in temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, and pollutants information simultaneously collected are correlated with the spectral differences observed in the various Skylab data. The techniques outlined should be applicable for coastal and estuarine process studies in other areas. A suspensate concentration of about 2 mg/liter is quite sufficient to tag a surface current system, and the surface structure of currents with over 250 mg/liter can be imaged by using progressively longer wavelength filters.

Analysis of a magnetically suspended, high-performance instrument pointing system

This paper describes a highly accurate auxiliary instrument pointing system which can provide fine pointing for a variety of solar-, stellar-, and Earth-viewing scientific instruments during extended space shuttle orbital missions. This system, called the Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS), consists of pointing assemblies for coarse and vernier pointing. The 'coarse' assembly is attached to the spacecraft (e.g., the space shuttle) and consists of an elevation gimbal and a lateral gimbal to provide coarse pointing. The vernier pointing assembly consists of the payload instrument mounted on a plate around which is attached a continuous annular rim. The vernier assembly is suspended in the lateral gimbal using magnetic actuators which provide rim suspension forces and fine pointing torques. A detailed linearized mathematical model is developed for the ASPS/space shuttle system, and control laws and payload attitude state estimators are designed. Statistical pointing performance is predicted in the presence of stochastic disturbances such as crew motion, sensor noise, and actuator noise.

Development and validation of a piloted simulation of a helicopter and external sling load

A generalized, real time, piloted, visual simulation of a single rotor helicopter, suspension system, and external load is described and validated for the full flight envelope of the U.S. Army CH-54 helicopter and cargo container as an example. The mathematical model described uses modified nonlinear classical rotor theory for both the main rotor and tail rotor, nonlinear fuselage aerodynamics, an elastic suspension system, nonlinear load aerodynamics, and a loadground contact model. The implementation of the mathematical model on a large digital computing system is described, and validation of the simulation is discussed. The mathematical model is validated by comparing measured flight data with simulated data, by comparing linearized system matrices, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors with manufacturers' data, and by the subjective comparison of handling characteristics by experienced pilots. A visual landing display system for use in simulation which generates the pilot's forward looking real world display was examined and a special head up, down looking load/landing zone display is described.

Two-headed bolt

Coarse, multi-ingredient suspensions are sprayed on surface smoothly and uniformly with aid of nozzle attachment for commercial spray gun. Nozzle attachment is contoured internally to suppress overspray and to prevent spray from segregating. From its conical inlet, nozzle converges smoothly to throat, then diverges in bell-shaped chamber that allows suspension to flow uniterruptedly without building up turbulently in nozzle. End of nozzle is adjustable and can be extended or retracted to avoid dripping when inlet pressure, pump pressure, or density of mixture changes.

A model for hypokinesia: Effects on muscle atrophy in the rat

Hypokinesia in the hindlimbs of rats was induced by suspension; a newly developed harness system was used. The animal was able to use its forelimbs to maneuver, within a 140 deg arc, to obtain food and water and to permit limited grooming of the forequarters. The hindlimbs were nonload bearing for 7 days; following a 7-day period of hypodynamia, selected animals were placed in metabolic cages for 7 days to study recovery from hypokinesia. During the 7-day period of hypokinesia there was evidence of muscle atrophy. Gastrocnemius weight decreased, renal papillary urea content increased, and daily urinary losses of NH3 and 3-methylhistidine increased. During the 7-day recovery period muscle mass and excretion rate of urea, NH3 and 3-methylhistidine returned to control levels. Calcium balance was positive throughout the 7-day period of hypokinesia. Hypertrophy of the adrenals suggested the occurrence of some level of stress despite the apparent behavioral adjustment to the suspension harness. It was concluded that significant muscle atrophy and parallel changes in nitrogen metabolism occur in suspended rats and these changes are readily reversible.

On maneuvering large flexible spacecraft using an annular momentum control device

A scheme for the control and maneuvering of a large flexible spacecraft by means of two flexible AMCD's using noncontacting magnetic suspension is presented. The system consists of a flexible vehicle, two flexible rings and a magnetic suspension and driving assembly. The necessary skewing of the rings for maneuvering of the vehicle is accomplished by moving the pairs of magnets along tracks distributed around the circumference of the vehicle. The equations of motion for each subsystem are derived by the Lagrangian approach. Attitude motions are described in terms of quasi-coordinates. For small vehicle angular rates and rings attitude motions, an ordering scheme can be used to separate the equations of motion according to the magnitude of the terms. The ordered equations of motion lead to a linear time-variant optimal control problem for the maneuvering of the spacecraft.

Modes of sediment transport in channelized water flows with ramifications to the erosion of the Martian outflow channels

The paper discusses application to Martian water flows of the criteria that determine which grain-size ranges are transported as bed load, suspension, and wash load. The results show nearly all sand-sized material and finer would have been transported as wash load and that basalt pebbles and even cobbles could have been transported at rapid rates of suspension. An analysis of the threshold of sediment motion on Mars further indicates that the flows would have been highly competent, the larger flows having been able to transport boulder-sized material. Comparisons with terrestrial rivers which transport hyperconcentration levels of sediments suggest that the Martian water flows could have achieved sediment concentrations up to 70% in weight. Although it is possible that flows could have picked up enough sediment to convert to pseudolaminar mud flows, they probably remained at hyperconcentration levels and fully turbulent in flow character.

Femur-bending properties as influenced by gravity. IV - Limits after high and low weight-bearing

Gravity enhances femur growth as measured in terms of strength, but shows little or even a growth-retarding effect in terms of relative brittleness, defined as the inverse of ultimate or tolerable strain. Chronic weightlessness was simulated by harness suspension or by extrapolation of results from 3-g centrifugation. Experimental results from 45 male, white rats (34-520 d old) were compared to 72 control or baseline rats (28-520 d old) with correction for age and size differences. After suspension, the youngest rats showed subnormal tolerable strains. Combined results, however, although predicting 19 + or 1% below normal strength, after a week of weightlessness, predicted less effect (1 + or - 4%) for the tolerable strain.

A precision pointing system for Shuttle experiment payloads

This paper describes the Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS) being developed to support NASA Shuttle payloads in the 1980s. The ASPS employs a unique magnetic suspension system to isolate Shuttle payloads from Orbiter disturbances and provide vernier control of the payload's attitude, thereby allowing extremely accurate and stable pointing. A description of the system design, configurations, and performance goals is given. Component and system development testing of the full-size ASPS Engineering Development Model is described, and hardware photographs and test configurations are presented.

Design and analysis of a torsion braid pendulum displacement transducer

The dynamic properties at various temperatures of braids impregnated with polymer can be measured by using the braid as the suspension of a torsion pendulum. This report describes the electronic and mechanical design of a torsional braid pendulum displacement transducer which is an advance in the state of the art. The transducer uses a unique optical design consisting of refracting quartz windows used in conjunction with a differential photocell to produce a null signal. The release mechanism for initiating free torsional oscillation of the pendulum has also been improved. Analysis of the precision and accuracy of the transducer indicated that the maximum relative error in measuring torsional amplitude was approximately 0. A serious problem inherent in all instruments which use a torsional suspension was analyzed: misalignment of the physical and torsional axes of the torsional member which results in modulation of the amplitude of the free oscillation.

The assembly and properties of protobiological structures - The beginnings of cellular peptide synthesis

New data indicate that lysine-rich proteinoids have the ability to catalyze the synthesis of peptide bonds from a variety of amino acids and ATP. This capacity is evident in aqueous solution, in suspension of phase-separated complexes of lysine-rich proteinoid with acidic proteinoids, and in suspension of phase-separated particles composed of lysine-rich proteinoids with polynucleotides. Since the proteinoid complexes can contain other catalytic activities, including ability to catalyze internucleotide bond formation, it is inferred that the first protocells on earth already had a number of biological types of activity.
