Software For Automated Leak Detection Using Infrared Camera

This code can read in videos or images in either a batch or real-time format. Videos are broken up into frames, and the frames are processed using an optical flow algorithm to decipher movement between adjacent frames. This adherent movement is ran through a convolutional neural network that automatically classifies the contents of the video. Additional content inside the code aids with noisy images and removal of nuisance movement.

Machine learning and TDDFT software for stopping power computation

(SF-24-012) Stopping power describes the rate that a material slows radiation particles passing through it and is useful in designing many technologies. Few organizations can perform new measurements, which require significant resources and rare equipment, and all others rely on coarse approximations rendered from pre-existing data. Methods for computing stopping power in new materials, such as time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), have only recently (circa-2015) become available but are too computationally costly to use frequently enough to have a pronounced impact. We have created a method that opens a pathway to computing stopping power without any need for experimental data by combining electronic structure computations and machine learning.

Sensor Data Analytics and Data Quality Assessment Software

The proposed framework derives a set of quality metrics to provide critical insights into and tracking of grid operations, sensor performance, sensor longevity, and event statistics. Power grid engineers can utilize this information to identify problems with existing sensor locations and problematic power grid assets including generators, transmission lines, load centers, and substations. This information can also be used to identify unexpected/abnormal behavior of power grid components, improve power grid observability, and operational monitoring, and thus enhance real-time decision-making support system. Power grid planners can utilize this information to augment existing sensing architecture with new sensors and improve the observability of the network.

AFUE Analysis Software Tool

The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) analysis of residential and light commercial furnaces follows ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 103-2017 (i.e., Method of Testing for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency of Residential Central Furnaces and Boilers) . The analysis is a complex, comprehensive method based on furnace configuration and specific components equipped, requiring detailed furnace testing and measurement data. For this reason, an AFUE Analysis Tool using Microsoft Excel enabled with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) was developed with a user-friendly interface and comprehensive coverage. The tool consists of three worksheets: unit and configuration selection, geometry and measurement data input, and AFUE plus key results. This tool can be used to estimate the AFUE of both condensing and noncondensing furnaces with single-stage, two-stage, and step-modulating functions. The tool was validated with experimental data from Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s natural gas furnace projects that are commercially available. The results indicate the tool is reasonably accurate in the evaluation of a new R&D modified furnace unit.

WFSUITE: A PYTHON SOFTWARE SUITE FOR X-RAY WAVEFRONT SENDING AND AT-WAVELENGTH METROLOGY

SF-26-025 WFSuite is a graphical and command-line toolkit for coded-mask-based X-ray wavefront sensing and phase reconstruction at synchrotron beamlines. It integrates analysis tools for both relative and absolute speckle-based measurements. In the relative metrology module, WFSuite implements Wavelet-transform-based X-ray Speckle Tracking (WXST) and Wavelet-transform-based Speckle Vector Tracking (WSVT) methods to retrieve differential phase and wavefront distortions by comparing speckle patterns recorded with and without the test sample. In the absolute phase module, WFSuite uses coded-mask speckle patterns and replaces the measured reference with a numerically simulated one, enablingsingle-shot wavefront reconstruction using either WXST or a neural-network-based method (SPINNet).

Assessment of software methods for estimating protein-protein relative binding affinities

A growing number of computational tools have been developed to accurately and rapidly predict the impact of amino acid mutations on protein-protein relative binding affinities. Such tools have many applications, for example, designing new drugs and studying evolutionary mechanisms. In the search for accuracy, many of these methods employ expensive yet rigorous molecular dynamics simulations. By contrast, non-rigorous methods use less exhaustive statistical mechanics, allowing for more efficient calculations. However, it is unclear if such methods retain enough accuracy to replace rigorous methods in binding affinity calculations. This trade-off between accuracy and computational expense makes it difficult to determine the best method for a particular system or study. Here, eight non-rigorous computational methods were assessed using eight antibody-antigen and eight non-antibody-antigen complexes for their ability to accurately predict relative binding affinities (ΔΔG) for 654 single mutations. In addition to assessing accuracy, we analyzed the CPU cost and performance for each method using a variety of physico-chemical structural features. This allowed us to posit scenarios in which each method may be best utilized. Most methods performed worse when applied to antibody-antigen complexes compared to non-antibody-antigen complexes. Rosetta-based JayZ and EasyE methods classified mutations as destabilizing (ΔΔG < -0.5 kcal/mol) with high (83–98%) accuracy and a relatively low computational cost for non-antibody-antigen complexes. Some of the most accurate results for antibody-antigen systems came from combining molecular dynamics with FoldX with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.46, but this was also the most computationally expensive method. Overall, our results suggest these methods can be used to quickly and accurately predict stabilizing versus destabilizing mutations but are less accurate at predicting actual binding affinities. This study highlights the need for continued development of reliable, accessible, and reproducible methods for predicting binding affinities in antibody-antigen proteins and provides a recipe for using current methods.

Pycheron: A Python-Based Seismic Waveform Data Quality Control Software Package

Supplementing an existing high-quality seismic monitoring network with openly available station data could improve coverage and decrease magnitudes of completeness; however, this can present challenges when varying levels of data quality exist. Without discerning the quality of openly available data, using it poses significant data management, analysis, and interpretation issues. Incorporating additional stations without properly identifying and mitigating data quality problems can degrade overall monitoring capability. If openly available stations are to be used routinely, a robust, automated data quality assessment for a wide range of quality control (QC) issues is essential. To meet this need, we developed Pycheron, a Python-based library for QC of seismic waveform data. Pycheron was initially based on the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology’s Modular Utility for STAtistical kNowledge Gathering but has been expanded to include more functionality. Pycheron can be implemented at the beginning of a data processing pipeline or can process stand-alone data sets. Its objectives are to (1) identify specific QC issues; (2) automatically assess data quality and instrumentation health; (3) serve as a basic service that all data processing builds on by alerting downstream processing algorithms to any quality degradation; and (4) improve our ability to process orders of magnitudes more data through performance optimizations. This article provides an overview of Pycheron, its features, basic workflow, and an example application using a synthetic QC data set.

The ITensor Software Library for Tensor Network Calculations

ITensor is a system for programming tensor network calculations with an interface modeled on tensor diagrams, allowing users to focus on the connectivity of a tensor network without manually bookkeeping tensor indices. The ITensor interface rules out common programming errors and enables rapid prototyping of algorithms. After discussing the philosophy behind the ITensor approach, we show examples of each part of the interface including Index objects, the ITensor product operator, tensor factorizations, tensor storage types, algorithms for matrix product state (MPS) and matrix product operator (MPO) tensor networks, quantum number conserving block sparse tensors, and the NDTensors library. We also review publications that have used ITensor for quantum many-body physics and for other areas where tensor networks are increasingly applied. To conclude we discuss promising features and optimizations to be added in the future.

Adapting DESGW Single Epoch Image Differencing to the LSST Software Stack

As gravitational wave detections become an ever-increasing part of cosmological research, the Gravitational Waves Group of the Dark Energy Survey (DESGW) seeks to match and interpret optical observations for these short-lived, transient events.[1]To provide timely analysis for each follow up, DESGW has developed a custom Single Epoch Differencing Pipeline for processing optical data obtained from the Dark Energy Camera (DECam).[2]While effective, the pipeline is a custom design and thus requires extra maintenance and specialized knowledge to operate and modify at a time when new projects are taking precedence.

A software package for modeling and simulating fault graphs

This report describes a novel fault graph modeling language and a simulation tool for executing models specified in the language. The modeling language has three primary features that distinguish it from similar reliability analysis tools. These are (1) a random variable modeling several distinct outcomes of a single fault; (2) chains of faults in which one fault triggers another; and (3) time to fail sampled from probability distributions including positive normal, exponential, Weibull with a minimum, or immediate. These features are motivated by their use in a historical analysis of centrifuge reliability.

Two new SciDAC institutes promote mathematical tools and software technology for high-performance computing

Bigger is often said to be better, and the newest extreme-scale computers certainly are bigger, with millions of processing units. Moreover, the breadth of science performed on the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) computing facilities is expanding, with new technology such as artificial intelligence emerging. These advances are exciting, creating new opportunities for scientific discovery; however, they also raise new questions for scientists who want to exploit these advances for tackling more complex problems. Will my simulation code be able to utilize the accelerators in extreme-scale computing systems? Can I take advantage of the deepening memory hierarchy in heterogeneous processors? Is there a way around bottlenecks caused by the widening ratio of peak floating-point operations per second to I/0 bandwidth? How can I manage my huge amounts of data effectively? Can I analyze data in situ, or must I transfer it to offline storage for later analysis? To address such questions, DOE announced that it is providing $57.5 million over the next five years for two multidisciplinary teams — FASTMath and RAPIDS2 — to develop new tools and techniques to harness supercomputers for scientific discovery. The teams, called SciDAC Institutes, are part of the Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing program.

Parameter Sensitivity Analysis of the SparTen High Performance Sparse Tensor Decomposition Software (Extended Analysis)

Tensor decomposition models play an increasingly important role in modern data science applications. One problem of particular interest is fitting a low-rank Canonical Polyadic (CP) tensor decomposition model when the tensor has sparse structure and the tensor elements are nonnegative count data. SparTen is a high-performance C++ library which computes a low-rank decomposition using different solvers: a first-order quasi-Newton or a second-order damped Newton method, along with the appropriate choice of runtime parameters. Since default parameters in SparTen are tuned to experimental results in prior published work on a single real-world dataset conducted using MATLAB implementations of these methods, it remains unclear if the parameter defaults in SparTen are appropriate for general tensor data. Furthermore, it is unknown how sensitive algorithm convergence is to changes in the input parameter values. This report addresses these unresolved issues with large-scale experimentation on three benchmark tensor data sets. Experiments were conducted on several different CPU architectures and replicated with many initial states to establish generalized profiles of algorithm convergence behavior.
