Effects of A 33-Ion Sequential Beam Galactic Cosmic Ray Analog on Male Mouse Behavior and Evaluation of CDDO-EA as A Radiation Countermeasure

In long-term spaceflight, astronauts will face unique cognitive loads and social challenges which will be complicated by communication delays with Earth. It is important to understand the central nervous system (CNS) effects of deep spaceflight and the associated unavoidable exposure to galactic cosmic radiation (GCR). Rodent studies show single- or simple-particle combination exposure alters CNS endpoints, including hippocampal-dependent behavior. An even better Earth-based simulation of GCR is now available, consisting of a 33-beam (33-GCR) exposure. However, the effect of whole-body 33-GCR exposure on rodent behavior is unknown, and no 33-GCR CNS countermeasures have been tested. Here astronaut-age-equivalent (6mo-old) C57BL/6J male mice were exposed to 33-GCR (75cGy, a Mars mission dose). Pre-/during/post-Sham or 33-GCR exposure, mice received a diet containing a ‘vehicle’ formulation alone or with the antioxidant/anti-inflammatory compound CDDO-EA as a potential countermeasure. Behavioral testing beginning 4mo post-irradiation suggested radiation and diet did not affect measures of exploration/anxiety-like behaviors (open field, elevated plus maze) or recognition of a novel object. However, in 3-Chamber Social Interaction (3-CSI), CDDO-EA/33-GCR mice failed to spend more time exploring a holder containing a novel mouse vs. a novel object (empty holder), suggesting sociability deficits. Also, Vehicle/33-GCR and CDDO-EA/Sham mice failed to discriminate between a novel stranger vs. familiarized stranger mouse, suggesting blunted preference for social novelty. CDDO-EA given pre-/ during/post-irradiation did not attenuate the 33-GCR-induced blunting of preference for social novelty. Future elucidation of the mechanisms underlying 33-GCR-induced blunting of preference for social novelty will improve risk analysis for astronauts which may in-turn improve countermeasures.

Sequential Bayesian Parameter Estimation of Stochastic Dynamic Load Models

In this paper we focus on the parameter estimation of dynamic load models with stochastic terms-in particular, load models where protection settings are uncertain, such as in aggregated air conditioning units. We show how the uncertainty in the aggregated protection characteristics can be formulated as a stochastic differential equation with process noise. We cast the parameter inversion within a Bayesian parameter estimation framework, and we present methods to include process noise. We demonstrate the benefits of considering stochasticity in the parameter estimation and the risks of ignoring it.

Apparatus for high-throughput sequential tensile testing and methods thereof

The present invention relates, in part, to an apparatus configured to test a plurality of test samples within a sample cartridge. Such an apparatus can facilitate high-throughput tensile testing of such test samples. Also described herein are methods for using such an apparatus and for testing such test samples.

Generating Sequential PV Deployment Scenarios for High Renewable Distribution Grid Planning: Preprint

This paper introduces a novel approach for generating solar photovoltaic (PV) plant deployment scenarios for grid integration planning. The approach guarantees consistency among scenarios of the same deployment by ensuring that higher penetration scenarios contain PV units deployed in lower penetration scenarios. It also constrains the size and spatial distribution of the PV plants and considers three placement types. A case study on a real-world distribution system proves that the precepts of scenario consistency, deployment diversity, and placement are met. The study further investigates the impact of the resulting scenarios via a stochastic hosting capacity analysis. Results indicate that the ratio between PV and load sizes, referred to as the nodal PV penetration factor (NPPF), is a key driver of the grid integration impact. By reducing the NPPF from 5 to 2, the maximum hosting capacity increased by at least 112%. The study also reveals that scenarios under random placement can lead to higher hosting capacity values.

2017 Meander C sediment characterization from the East River, Colorado

This dataset includes characterization data collected on sediment samples from Meander C as part of the Watershed Function Scientific Focus Area (SFA) located in the Upper Colorado River Basin. The data were collected to investigate the nature of mineral-organic associations across the meander transect and with depth. Samples were collected in 2017, and analyzed using sequential extractions (water, pyrophosphate, HCl, and dithionite) and density fractionation. Data collected include: texture, pH, root biomass, and metals (Fe, Al, Ca, Si) of bulk sediment samples; C and N of heavy fraction; and extractable OC, Fe, and Al, and organic matter characterization using high-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) of sequential extractions. Sample locations are included in the ‘sample_metadata.xlsx” file. Sediment characterization data is included in the accompanying csv files: bulk and density fractions (MCB2017_density-and-bulk-fractions.csv), sequential extractions (MCB2017_sequential-extractions.csv), and FT-ICR-MS data from sequential extractions in three files to be read by the R package ftmsRanalysis (MCB2017_FTICRMS-sequential-edata.csv, MCB2017_FTICRMS-sequential-emeta.csv, and MCB2017_FTICRMS-sequential-fdata.csv). Sediment was collected in triplicate; ID’s refer to individual samples.
