Real-time estimation of solar irradiation

Aspects relate to methods, systems, and computer program products for estimating future levels of solar power received at a sensor including receiving, by a processor, a first measured power value at a first time from the sensor, calculating a first value of a dynamic correction factor based on the first measured power value associated with the first time, applying the first value of the calculated dynamic correction factor to a power estimation model, generating a first power estimation value for a second time using the power estimation model, wherein the second time is later than the first time, receiving a second measured power value at the second time, and calculating a second value of a dynamic correction factor based on the second measured power value associated with the second time and the first value of the dynamic correction factor.

FNET/GridEye: A Tool for Situational Awareness of Large Power Interconnetion Grids

This paper gives an overview of a wide-area measurement system deployed at the distribution level: FNET/GridEye, which consists of hundreds of sensors, communication and a data center. The sensors are utilized to take frequency, voltage phase angle and magnitude measurements from the ordinary 110 or 220V outlets in offices or residential houses. These measurements are continuously transmitted to the data center via Internet. Many applications have been implemented to monitor large-scale interconnected power grids, and interpret grid operation status to improve system operators' situational awareness capability. Some representative online and offline applications are presented in this paper, as well as several recently developed new applications.

Sensor fusion display evaluation using information integration models in enhanced/synthetic vision applications

Based on existing integration models in the psychological literature, an evaluation framework is developed to assess sensor fusion displays as might be implemented in an enhanced/synthetic vision system. The proposed evaluation framework for evaluating the operator's ability to use such systems is a normative approach: The pilot's performance with the sensor fusion image is compared to models' predictions based on the pilot's performance when viewing the original component sensor images prior to fusion. This allows for the determination as to when a sensor fusion system leads to: poorer performance than one of the original sensor displays, clearly an undesirable system in which the fused sensor system causes some distortion or interference; better performance than with either single sensor system alone, but at a sub-optimal level compared to model predictions; optimal performance compared to model predictions; or, super-optimal performance, which may occur if the operator were able to use some highly diagnostic 'emergent features' in the sensor fusion display, which were unavailable in the original sensor displays.

Sizing Accuracy of Low-Cost Optical Particle Sensors Under Controlled Laboratory Conditions

Low-cost particulate matter sensors have seen increased use for monitoring at personal and local levels due to their affordability, ease of operation, and high time resolution. However, the quality of data reported by these sensors can be questionable, and a thorough evaluation of their performance is necessary. This study evaluated the particle sizing accuracy of several commonly used optical sensors, including the Alphasense optical particle counter (OPC), TSI DustTrak DRX aerosol monitor, Plantower PMS5003 sensor, and Sensirion SPS30 sensor, using laboratory-generated monodisperse particles. The OPC and DRX agreed partially with reference instruments and showed promise in detecting coarse-size particles. However, the PMS5003 and SPS30 did not correctly size fine and coarse particles. Furthermore, their reported mass distributions do not directly correspond to their number distribution. Despite these limitations, field measurements involving a dust storm period showed that the SPS30 correlated reasonably well with reference instruments for both PM2.5 and PM10, though the regression slopes differed significantly. These findings underscore the need for caution when interpreting data from low-cost optical sensors, particularly for coarse particles. Recommendations for improving the performance of these sensors are also provided.

Device enables calibration of microphones at high sound pressure levels

Coupling device accurately calibrates microphones at high sound pressure intensities. The system which uses a liquid as the coupling medium can operate in an automatic mode by using a standard microphone as a control sensor. Feedback from the standard microphone controls the calibration signal level.

Applications of Kalman filtering to real-time trace gas concentration measurements

A Kalman filtering technique is applied to the simultaneous detection of NH3 and CO2 with a diode-laser-based sensor operating at 1.53 micrometers. This technique is developed for improving the sensitivity and precision of trace gas concentration levels based on direct overtone laser absorption spectroscopy in the presence of various sensor noise sources. Filter performance is demonstrated to be adaptive to real-time noise and data statistics. Additionally, filter operation is successfully performed with dynamic ranges differing by three orders of magnitude. Details of Kalman filter theory applied to the acquired spectroscopic data are discussed. The effectiveness of this technique is evaluated by performing NH3 and CO2 concentration measurements and utilizing it to monitor varying ammonia and carbon dioxide levels in a bioreactor for water reprocessing, located at the NASA-Johnson Space Center. Results indicate a sensitivity enhancement of six times, in terms of improved minimum detectable absorption by the gas sensor.

A method for estimating the amplitude response of smartphone built-in microphone sensors below 4 kHz

A method for estimating the amplitude response of built-in smartphone microphone sensors is pre- sented. The method is intended to be accessible to the general public, and comparison calibration measurements are performed in a non-isolated environment using conventional consumer products. A double reference sensor scheme is set up, consisting of a MB3 digital microbarometer (reference over the 0.5–2 Hz octave bands) and the iPrecisionMic smartphone microphone (reference above the 2 Hz octave band). The amplitude response of the iPrecisionMic sensor is first evaluated over the 1–2000 Hz octave bands. The amplitude response of three Samsung Galaxy S8 built-in smart- phone microphone sensors is then measured over the 0.5–2000 Hz octave bands. The Redvox Infrasound Recorder application (app) for Android is used to measure acoustic signals with the built-in smartphone microphone sensors. Amplitude response models in terms of digital gain are estimated for the test sensors based on the results. Last, self-noise levels for the iPrecisionMic and Samsung Galaxy S8 microphones are estimated and compared to infrasound ambient noise models. Results show an experimental capability for estimating the amplitude response of built-in smartphone microphone sensors in a non-isolated environment with conventional consumer products.

PurpleAir Sensors as Effective Indicators of PM Exposure in Urban Areas

Particulate matter that is 2.5 microns or less in diameter (PM 2.5 ) is a biproduct of combustion reactions used for energy production. Populations that are exposed to consistently high levels of aerosolized PM 2.5 face serious health risks. This project compared low-cost PM 2.5 sensors with federally recognized methods to look for a cost-effective way to expand the air quality monitor network. Within metropolitan areas that face inconsistent spatial distribution of PM 2.5 , there may not be the necessary network density to indicate neighborhood-levels of PM 2.5 . This project aimed to examine the sensitivity of low-cost PM 2.5 sensor measurements on a neighborhood scale (< 4 km diameter) in an urban area to prevent citizens from being exposed to unsafe levels of PM 2.5 without their knowledge. Using publicly available sensor data from Livermore, CA and Bakersfield, CA, it was determined, based on the revealed patterns, that the analyzed low-cost sensors were able to display representative PM 2.5 levels for neighborhoodscale areas exposed to pollution from PM 2.5 sources.

Fiber Optic Sensing Technologies for Battery Management Systems and Energy Storage Applications

Applications of fiber optic sensors to battery monitoring have been increasing due to the growing need of enhanced battery management systems with accurate state estimations. The goal of this review is to discuss the advancements enabling the practical implementation of battery internal parameter measurements including local temperature, strain, pressure, and refractive index for general operation, as well as the external measurements such as temperature gradients and vent gas sensing for thermal runaway imminent detection. A reasonable matching is discussed between fiber optic sensors of different range capabilities with battery systems of three levels of scales, namely electric vehicle and heavy-duty electric truck battery packs, and grid-scale battery systems. The advantages of fiber optic sensors over electrical sensors are discussed, while electrochemical stability issues of fiber-implanted batteries are critically assessed. This review also includes the estimated sensing system costs for typical fiber optic sensors and identifies the high interrogation cost as one of the limitations in their practical deployment into batteries. Finally, future perspectives are considered in the implementation of fiber optics into high-value battery applications such as grid-scale energy storage fault detection and prediction systems.

An Inexpensive Radiosonde Chilled Mirror Sensor: An Old Technology With New Impact

The availability of an inexpensive chilled mirror dewpoint sensor has made improved atmospheric relative humidity measurements accessible. Comparisons between the chilled mirror sensor and routine radiosonde sensors have provided new information on the limitation and reliability of the routine measurements. The chilled mirror has observed detailed moisture profiles at cirrus cloud levels when cirrus was not visible, a feature that routine sensors fail to observe. Comparison measurements between the chilled mirror, the carbon resistive (hygristor) and, the capacitive sensors will be discussed. Measurements from three locations (Wallops Island; Andros Island, Bahamas; and Camborne, UK) will be highlighted. It is conceivable that the chilled mirror sensor, when its capability is fully understood, may be sufficiently reliable to serve as a reference.

Interactive robot control system and method of use

A robotic system includes a robot having joints, actuators, and sensors, and a distributed controller. The controller includes command-level controller, embedded joint-level controllers each controlling a respective joint, and a joint coordination-level controller coordinating motion of the joints. A central data library (CDL) centralizes all control and feedback data, and a user interface displays a status of each joint, actuator, and sensor using the CDL. A parameterized action sequence has a hierarchy of linked events, and allows the control data to be modified in real time. A method of controlling the robot includes transmitting control data through the various levels of the controller, routing all control and feedback data to the CDL, and displaying status and operation of the robot using the CDL. The parameterized action sequences are generated for execution by the robot, and a hierarchy of linked events is created within the sequence.

Sensor for Direct Measurement of the Boundary Shear Stress in Fluid Flow

The formation of scour patterns at bridge piers is driven by the forces at the boundary of the water flow. In most experimental scour studies, indirect processes have been applied to estimate the shear and normal stress using measured velocity profiles. The estimations are based on theoretical models and associated assumptions. However, the turbulence flow fields and boundary layer in the pier-scour region are very complex. In addition, available turbulence models cannot account accurately for the bed roughness effect. Direct measurement of the boundary shear and normal stress and their fluctuations are attractive alternatives. However, this approach is a challenging one especially for high spatial resolution and high fidelity measurements. The authors designed and fabricated a prototype miniature shear stress sensor including an EDM machined floating plate and a high-resolution laser optical encoder. Tests were performed both in air as well as operation in water with controlled flow. The sensor sensitivity, stability and signal-to-noise level were measured and evaluated. The detailed test results and a discussion of future work will be presented in this paper.

In-Flight Verification and Validation of Colloid Microthruster Performance

Colloid Micronewton Thrusters (CMNTs) use an electrospray to provide precision spacecraft position and pointing control. They were demonstrated in space for the first time as part of NASA’s Space Technology 7 (ST7) payload hosted by the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) LISA Pathfinder (LPF) technology demonstration mission in January, 2016. CMNTs were the actuator in the disturbance reduction system (DRS) that provided drag-free operation of the LPF spacecraft, which will be necessary for future gravity wave observatories such as ESA’s Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission, currently in Phase A and scheduled for launch in 2034. The CMNT technology met performance requirements operating at 5-30 µN of thrust with 0.1 µN resolution and ≤0.1 µN/ÖHz thrust noise to deliver the required nanometer-level precision spacecraft control measured by the gravitational reference sensor (GRS) in the ESA LISA Technology Package (LTP). The performance of seven of the eight CMNTs in flight was consistent with ground test results, and as a system, all eight thrusters met mission-level performance requirements. The colloid microthruster performance model of thrust and thrust noise as a function of operational parameters (i.e. beam current, voltage, temperature, etc.) was validated in flight over a wide range of conditions. A model and simulation of the thruster control algorithm was developed and validated with flight data to predict thrust noise. This capability is important for future missions because it relates directly to the acceleration noise on the test masses, which provide the gravity wave measurements. The CMNT thruster model data and validation with LISA Pathfinder/ST7-DRS flight experiments are presented in this paper.

Selection of the silicon sensor thickness for the Phase-2 upgrade of the CMS Outer Tracker

During the operation of the CMS experiment at the High-Luminosity LHC the silicon sensors of the Phase-2 Outer Tracker will be exposed to radiation levels that could potentially deteriorate their performance. Previous studies had determined that planar float zone silicon with n-doped strips on a p-doped substrate was preferred over p-doped strips on an n-doped substrate. The last step in evaluating the optimal design for the mass production of about 200 m$^{2}$ of silicon sensors was to compare sensors of baseline thickness (about 300 μm) to thinned sensors (about 240 μm), which promised several benefits at high radiation levels because of the higher electric fields at the same bias voltage. This study provides a direct comparison of these two thicknesses in terms of sensor characteristics as well as charge collection and hit efficiency for fluences up to 1.5 × 10$^{15}$ n$_{eq}$/cm$^{2}$. The measurement results demonstrate that sensors with about 300 μm thickness will ensure excellent tracking performance even at the highest considered fluence levels expected for the Phase-2 Outer Tracker.

Reflective binary amplitude grating for soft x-ray shearing and Hartmann wavefront sensing

Here, we demonstrate a reflective wavefront sensor grating suitable for the characterization of high-quality x-ray beamlines and optical systems with high power densities. Operating at glancing incidence angles, the optical element is deeply etched with a two-level pattern of shearing interferometry gratings and Hartmann wavefront sensor grids. Transverse features block unwanted light, enabling binary amplitude in reflection with high pattern contrast. We present surface characterization and soft x-ray reflectometry of a prototype grating array to demonstrate function prior to wavefront measurement applications. A simulation of device performance is shown.

Design data collection with Skylab/EREP microwave instrument S-193

The author has identified the following significant results. The Skylab S-193 radiometer/scatterometer collected thousands of measurements of scattering coefficient and brightness temperature over various parts of the United States during the summer of 1973 at angles of incidence between vertical and about 45 deg. These measurements have been combined to produce histograms of the response at each of several angles within this range, and to establish average scattering coefficient vs angle curves with 10% and 90% exceedance levels as well. The variation of the radiometeric measurements is primarily in the region from 255 K to 285 K, with very few measurements giving values down to and even below 200 K. The scattering coefficient varies, for the mean, from about 0 db at 1 deg off vertical to a low in the neighborhood of -10 db at 45 deg. The variability of the scattering coefficient measurements with this coarse resolution sensor is surprisingly small. The number of distinguishable levels is slightly more for the scatterometer than for the radiometer, but the amount of variation in brightness temperature caused by the physical temperature of the ground is enough so that the scatterometer can be used to distinguish significantly more meaningful levels than the radiometer.
