The Marysville, Montana Geothermal Project

Drilling the first geothermal well in Montana presented many challenges, not only in securing materials and planning strategies for drilling the wildcat well but also in addressing the environmental, legal, and institutional issues raised by the request for permission to explore a resource which lacked legal definition. The Marysville Geothermal Project was to investigate a dry hot rock heat anomaly. The well was drilled to a total depth of 6790 feet and many fractured water bearing zones were encountered below 1800 feet.

Evaluation of ERTS-1 data for certain hydrological uses

The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 MSS data have been used in a variety of hydrologic research including snow-extent mapping; studies of snowmelt, snowmelt runoff, spectral reflectance of snow for assessing snowpack conditions, and snow albedo; lake ice formation, breakup, and migration; lake current measurements; multispectral studies of lake ice; and flood studies. MSS sensing of soil moisture over a well-vegetated test site was unsuccessfully attempted. Although a powerful research tool, ERTS-1 has very limited use as an operational system for hydrologic communities because of its 18-day revisit cycle and its lack of a quick look capability.

Spinning mode sound propagation in ducts with acoustic treatment

Recent acoustic data show larger noise attenuations than predicted for acoustically treated aircraft engine inlets without splitter rings. A theoretical study of the acoustic propagation of spinning modes in acoustically treated open circular ducts is presented, and a suppressor with splitter rings was modeled by using the rectangular approximation to the annular duct. Theoretical models were used to determine optimum impedance and maximum attenuation for several spinning lobe numbers from 0 to 50. Results of the analysis indicate that for circular ducts the maximum possible attenuation and the optimum wall impedance are strong functions of the lobe number, and for annular ducts the attenuation and optimum wall impedance are insensitive to the spinning lobe number for well cut-on modes. These results explain why suppressors with splitter rings were quite effective in spite of the lack of detailed information on the noise source modal structure. Conversely, effective use of outer wall treatment alone will require expanded knowledge of the noise source structure. Approximate solutions are presented to help interpret the more exact theoretical results.

Progress in gamma ray burst astronomy

Spectral observations on nine of the eleven known cosmic gamma ray bursts detected from IMP-7 from late 1972 through 1973 are reported. All nine events were found to have average spectra ranging from 100 to 1100 keV. The hypothesis of a single greater than 100 keV average event spectrum for all gamma ray bursts (inferred from IMP-6 observations) was investigated. In addition to the mutual consistency of these 14 IMP events, all independently reported average event spectra fit the IMP-7 common spectrum. This observed lack of variability of the average event spectrum suggests that the production mechanism is tied to more rigidly fixed source parameters than most celestial or solar hard X-ray phenomena. Other characteristics of gamma ray bursts events, are discussed: a high-energy spectral tail with power-law index -2.5, a rising size spectrum from the earlier event rate, and a hint of clustering of event occurrence in time.

Comparison of measured and calculated aircraft lift generated pressures

Lift generated pressures produced by large, heavy aircraft at low altitudes were investigated due to concern over their possible effects on ground objects. Aircraft lift generated pressures were calculated using elementary airfoil theory, and these values were compared with ground level measurements made during an overflight program. The predicted and the measured values were in relatively good agreement. Due to lack of experimental investigations of this phenomenon, opportunity was taken during an overflight program to use a specially instrumented test range to measure the ground pressures produced for a range of aircraft weights and distances.

Analysis of ERTS-1 imagery of Wyoming and its application to evaluation of Wyoming's natural resources

The author has identified the following significant results. The Earth Resources Technology Satellite data included the following successful applications: (1) general geologic mapping, (2) structural and tectonic studies, (3) landforms and surface processes, (4) mineral exploration, (5) land use inventories, (6) hydrologic studies, (7) investigations in agriculture and forestry, and (8) environmental quality and ecology. The chief advantages of ERTS-1 data for geologic studies are synoptic view, spectral information, and seasonal coverage. The spectral data and repetitive aspect are also important for land use and vegetation studies. Low resolution and lack of steoscopic coverage were found to be the main limitations of ERTS data.

An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of nickel and nickel-base alloy surface alterations in simulated hot corrosion conditions with emphasis on eventual application to turbine blade corrosion

The spectra of the pure metals tested and their oxides were used to analyze the patterns obtained for various superalloys. The quantitative results for two superalloys revealed differences between the surface compositions and their behavior under different conditions of oxidation. The following results occurred during the hot corrosion of samples in the presence of Na2So4: a lack of Ti migration; strong effects on Cr; and, a higher speed of alteration of superalloys.

Photographic film image enhancement

A series of experiments were undertaken to assess the feasibility of defogging color film by the techniques of optical spatial filtering. A coherent optical processor was built using red, blue, and green laser light input and specially designed Fourier transformation lenses. An array of spatial filters was fabricated on black and white emulsion slides using the coherent optical processor. The technique was first applied to laboratory white light fogged film, and the results were successful. However, when the same technique was applied to some original Apollo X radiation fogged color negatives, the results showed no similar restoration. Examples of each experiment are presented and possible reasons for the lack of restoration in the Apollo films are discussed.

A design study of a photorefractive page composer

A laboratory demonstration and preliminary system analysis of a page composer designed to have the dual advantages of low optical loss and small size, were reported. The current page composer is optically addressed and functions by virtue of optically induced refractive index changes in the active material. Laboratory demonstrations of the device were successfully performed using 10 x 10 bit and 128 x 128 bit data arrays. It was established that the only significant obstacle to the construction of a brass-board model working at megabit data rates is the lack of sensitivity of the photorefractive materials which were considered during the course of this study. Possible materials for future consideration are the photoplastics. While they have more than the required sensitivity, their stability and suitability for double exposure holography was not investigated. If a sufficiently sensitive material is found, then the photorefractive page composer could be built to perform in a highly efficient fashion which would result in a overall reduction of the size of the memory system and an easing of the requirements upon the sensitivity of the holographic recording material.

Comparison of human driver dynamics in simulators with complex and simple visual displays and in an automobile on the road

As part of a comprehensive program exploring driver/vehicle system response in lateral steering tasks, driver/vehicle system describing functions and other dynamic data have been gathered in several milieu. These include a simple fixed base simulator with an elementary roadway delineation only display; a fixed base statically operating automobile with a terrain model based, wide angle projection system display; and a full scale moving base automobile operating on the road. Dynamic data with the two fixed base simulators compared favorably, implying that the impoverished visual scene, lack of engine noise, and simplified steering wheel feel characteristics in the simple simulator did not induce significant driver dynamic behavior variations. The fixed base vs. moving base comparisons showed substantially greater crossover frequencies and phase margins on the road course.

Infrared, radio, and X-ray observations of Cygnus X-3

Infrared observations of Cyg X-3 are presented along with X-ray and radio data. A study of the data shows evidence for several types of behavior in the infrared flux variations of Cyg X-3. It is pointed out that a lack of periodic variations observed can be due either to a real absence of these variations or to a masking by an outburst preceding the observation time. There is no simple radio-infrared correlation, although both radio and infrared emissions were observed during the same period of time.

Evidence for an internal heat source in Neptune

Analysis of Morrison and Cruikshank's (1974) infrared flux measurements of Uranus and Neptune shows that Uranus is probably in equilibrium with the incident solar flux, while Neptune probably radiates 2.4 times as much energy as it receives from the sun, implying an internal heat source of 1.4 times the solar input. On the basis of very broadband data (1.5 to 300 micron) Jupiter has been shown to radiate more energy than it receives from the sun. Of the Jovian planets, only Uranus, the least massive, appears to lack an internal heat source.

The major Martian dust storms of 1971 and 1973

Comparison of the major features of the two largest Martian dust storms on photographic record, namely those of 1971 and 1973. Maps of the first nine days of both storms are presented to facilitate a comparison of their initial outbreaks and growth. The frequency and regularity of storms of this size are uncertain because of the lack of comprehensive photographic observation during past apparitions.

The source of Neptune's internal heat and the value of Neptune's tidal dissipation factor

The suggestion is made that Neptune's observed internal heating is the action of tidal torques between Triton and Neptune in despinning the planet and causing the orbital decay of Triton's orbit. These result from the frictional dissipation of tides within Neptune. It is shown that the considered process implies a value of the tidal dissipation factor of approximately 170. The results of the investigation do not change the conclusion which follows from the lack of internal heating for Uranus that the interiors of Uranus and Neptune differ significantly.

A survey with Copernicus of interstellar O VI absorption

The presence of broad, shallow absorptions caused by O VI ions were revealed from UV spectra observations recorded by the Copernicus satellite for thirty-two stars. A table lists survey data on the stars observed for which values of the O VI column densities or their upper limits are extracted. Interstellar rather than circumstellar origin is evident from observation of the lack of correspondence between radical velocities of the stars and those of the O VI profiles. The presence of a low-density high-temperature phase of interstellar gas produced by supernova explosions is suggested.

A search for soft X-ray emission from red-giant coronae

Hills has pointed out that if red-giant coronae are weak sources of soft X-rays, then the problems of the identification of the local component of the soft X-ray background and the observed lack of gas in globular clusters may be simultaneously resolved. Using instrumentation aboard OAO Copernicus, we have searched unsuccessfully for emission in the 10-100 A band from four nearby red giants. In all cases, our upper limits are of the order of the minimum theoretically predicted fluxes.

Finite-element analysis of vibration and flutter of cantilever anisotropic plates

The hybrid stress finite element method is used to study the effects of filament angle and orthotropicity parameter on the vibration and flutter characteristics of cantilevered anisotropic plates. The results indicate a generally strong lack of monotonic dependence on filament angle. Also, the natural frequency in certain cases involving the first few modes, can become relatively insensitive to both filament angle and orthotropicity parameter for a range of filament angle beyond 70 deg. Values of critical dynamic pressure are obtained by a modal approach, in which the mode shapes are obtained by the hybrid stress method. Convergence of the modal method is rather rapid for the configurations analyzed, and a comparison of the method with an exact solution for the case of an isotropic simply supported plate shows that use of six modes gives excellent agreement.
