Interplay of femtoscopic and charge-balance correlations

Correlations driven by the constraints of local charge conservation have been shown to provide insight into the chemical evolution and diffusivity of the high-temperature matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. Two-particle correlations driven by final-state interactions have allowed the extraction of critical femtoscopic space-time information about the expansion and dissolution of the same collisions. Whereas correlations from final-state interactions mainly appear at small relative momenta, a few tens of MeV/c, charge-balance correlations extend over a range of hundreds of MeV/c. In nearly all previous analyses, this separation of scales is used to focus solely on one class or the other. So the purpose of this study is to quantitatively understand the degree to which correlations from final-state interactions distort the interpretation of charge-balance correlations and vice versa.

Differential two-particle number and momentum correlations with the AMPT, UrQMD, and EPOS models in Pb-Pb collisions at s N N = 2.76 TeV

We report studies of charge-independent and charge-dependent two-particle differential number correlation functions, R 2 (Δη,Δφ), and transverse momentum correlation functions, P 2 (Δη,Δφ), of charged particles produced in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC center-of-mass energy √sNN= 2.76 TeV with the UrQMD, AMPT, and EPOS models. Model calculations for R2 and P2 correlation functions are presented for inclusive charged hadrons (h ± ) in selected transverse momentum ranges and with full azimuthal coverage in the pseudorapidity range |η|<1.0. We compare these calculations for the strength, shape, and particularly the width of the correlation functions with recent measurements of these observables by the ALICE collaboration. Our analysis indicates that comparative studies of R 2 and P 2 correlation functions provide valuable insight towards the understanding of particle production in Pb–Pb collisions. We find, in particular, that these models produce quantitatively different magnitudes and shapes for these correlation functions and none reproduce the results reported by the ALICE collaboration. Accounting for quantum number conservation in models, particularly charge conservation, is mandatory to reproduce the detailed measurements of number and transverse momentum correlation functions.

Vortex rings from high energy central 𝑝 + 𝐴 collisions

Relativistic p + A collisions may produce droplets of quark gluon plasma (QGP) that quickly develop a toroidal vortex structure similar to that of an expanding smoke ring. We present viscous relativistic hydrodynamic calculations of ultra-central p + A collisions and develop an experimental observable to probe the structure, correlating the polarization and momentum of hyperons emitted from the collision. This effect is robust against changes in the definition of vorticity used to calculate the polarization. Experiments at RHIC and LHC may test the existence and strength of the vortex toroids, bringing new evidence to bear on the question of collectivity in the smallest QGP droplets.

Model study of the energy dependence of the correlation between anisotropic flow and the mean transverse momentum in Au + Au collisions

A hybrid model that employs the hadron-string transport model UrQMD and the (3+1)-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamic code vHLLE, is used to investigate the beam energy dependence of the correlation coefficient ρ(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) between the average transverse momentum [p T ] of hadrons emitted in an event and the square of the anisotropic flow coefficient v$^{2}_{2}$. For Au+Au collisions, the model predicts characteristic patterns for the energy and event-shape dependence of the variances for [p T ] and v$^{2}_{n}$ [Var([p T ] and Var(v$^{2}_{2}$)], and the covariance of v$^{2}_{n}$ and [p T ][cov(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ])], consistent with the attenuation effects of the specific shear viscosity η/s. Here in contrast, ρ(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) is predicted to be insensitive to the beam energy but sensitive to the initial-state geometry of the collisions. These observations suggest that a precise set of measurements for Var([p T ]), Var(v$^{2}_{2}$), cov(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) and ρ(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) as a function of beam energy and event shape, could serve to constrain better the eccentricities and their fluctuations over the entire span of beam energies, and consequently aid precision extraction of the temperature and baryon chemical-potential dependence of η/s from the wealth of Au+Au data obtained in the RHIC beam energy scan.

Centrality and transverse-momentum dependence of higher-order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Here we present high-precision measurements of elliptic, triangular, and quadrangular flow v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 , respectively, at midrapidity for identified hadrons π, p, K, φ, K s , Λ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy √ s NN = 200 GeV. We observe similar v n trends between light and strange mesons which indicates that the heavier strange quarks flow as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. The number-of-constituent-quark scaling for v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for 0–10%, 10–40%, and 40–80% collision centrality intervals. The results are compared to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions, and could serve as an additional constraint to the development of hydrodynamic models.

Ratios of collective flow observables in high-energy isobar collisions are insensitive to final-state interactions

The ratios of bulk observables, such as harmonic flow v 2 and v 3 , between high-energy 96 Ru + 96 Ru and 96 Zr + 96 Zr collisions were recently argued to be a clean probe of the nuclear structure differences between 96 Ru and 96 Zr . Using a transport model simulation of isobar collisions, we quantify this claim from the dependence of the ratios v 2,Ru /v 2, Zr and v 3,Ru /v 3,Zr on various final-state effects, such as the shear viscosity, hadronization, and hadronic cascade. Although the v 2 and v 3 change by more than 50% when varying the final-state effects, the ratios are unchanged. In addition, these ratios are independent of the transverse momentum p T and hadron species, despite of up to a factor of 2 change in v n . Further, the ratio of mean transverse momentum $\langle$p T $\rangle$ is found to be controlled by the nuclear skin and nuclear radius but is only slightly impacted by the final-state effects. Therefore, these isobar ratios serve as a clean probe of the initial condition of the quark-gluon plasma, which, in turn, is controlled by the collective structure of the colliding nuclei.

Higher-order cumulants and correlation functions of proton multiplicity distributions in s N N = 3 GeV Au + Au collisions at the RHIC STAR experiment

Here, we report a measurement of cumulants and correlation functions of event-by-event proton multiplicity distributions from fixed-target Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}$ = 3 GeV measured by the STAR experiment. Protons are identified within the rapidity (y) and transverse momentum ($p_T$) region –0:9 < $\textit{y}$ < 0 and 0:4 < pT < 2:0 GeV/c in the center-of-mass frame. A systematic analysis of the proton cumulants and correlation functions up to sixth-order as well as the corresponding ratios as a function of the collision centrality, $p_T$, and $\textit{y}$ are presented. The effect of pileup and initial volume fluctuations on these observables and the respective corrections are discussed in detail. The results are compared to calculations from the hadronic transport UrQMD model as well as a hydrodynamic model. In the most central 5% collisions, the value of proton cumulant ratio $C_4 = C_2$ is negative, drastically different from the values observed in Au+Au collisions at higher energies. Compared to model calculations including Lattice QCD, a hadronic transport model, and a hydrodynamic model, the strong suppression in the ratio of $C_4/C_2$ at 3 GeV Au+Au collisions indicates an energy regime dominated by hadronic interactions.

Nonprompt direct-photon production in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

The measurement of the direct-photon spectrum from Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV is presented by the PHENIX Collaboration using the external-photon-conversion technique for 0%–93% central collisions in a transverse-momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) range of 0.8–10 GeV/𝑐. An excess of direct photons, above prompt-photon production from hard-scattering processes, is observed for 𝑝 𝑇 < 6 GeV/𝑐. Nonprompt direct photons are measured by subtracting the prompt component, which is estimated as 𝑁 coll -scaled direct photons from 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at 200 GeV, from the direct-photon spectrum. Results are obtained for 0.8 < 𝑝 𝑇 < 6.0 GeV/𝑐 and suggest that the spectrum has an increasing inverse slope from ≈0.2 to 0.4 GeV/𝑐 with increasing 𝑝 𝑇 , which indicates a possible sensitivity of the measurement to photons from earlier stages of the evolution of the collision. In addition, like the direct-photon production, the 𝑝 𝑇 -integrated nonprompt direct-photon yields also follow a power-law scaling behavior as a function of collision-system size. Finally, the exponent, 𝛼, for the nonprompt component is found to be consistent with 1.1 with no apparent 𝑝 𝑇 dependence.

Identified charged-hadron production in 𝑝+Al, 3 He + Au, and Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and in U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron (𝜋 ± , 𝐾 ± , 𝑝, $\bar{𝑝}$) production at midrapidity in 𝑝 + Al, 3 He + Au, and Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) and transverse-mass (𝑚 𝑇 ) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of 𝐾/𝜋 and 𝑝/𝜋 have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu + Au and U + U) and small (𝑝 + Al and 3 He + Au) collision systems. The values of 𝐾/𝜋 ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in 𝑝+𝑝 collisions. However, the values of 𝑝/𝜋 ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of ≈0.6, which is a factor of ≈2 larger than in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors (𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 ) are also presented. Enhancement of proton 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values over meson 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values was observed in central 3 He + Au, Cu + Au, and U + U collisions. Finally, the proton 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values measured in the 𝑝 + Al collision system were found to be consistent with 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values of 𝜙, 𝜋 ± , 𝐾 ± , and 𝜋 0 mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in 𝑝 + Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production.

Measurements of the Elliptic and Triangular Azimuthal Anisotropies in Central He 3 + Au , d + Au and p + Au Collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

The elliptic (v 2 ) and triangular (v 3 ) azimuthal anisotropy coefficients in central 3He + Au, d + Au, and p + Au collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV are measured as a function of transverse momentum (P T ) at midrapidity (|n| < 0.9) via the azimuthal angular correlation between two particles both at |n| < 0.9 while the v 2 (P T ) values depend on the colliding systems, the v 3 (P T ) values are system independent within the uncertainties, suggesting an influence on eccentricity from subnucleonic fluctuations in these small-sized systems. Furthermore, these results also provide stringent constraints for the hydrodynamic modeling of these systems.

Measurement of the Lifetime and Λ Separation Energy of H Λ 3

The most precise measurements to date of the $^{3}_{Λ}$H lifetime τ and Λ separation energy B Λ are obtained using the data sample of Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The $^{3}_{Λ}$H is reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel ($^{3}_{Λ}$H → 3 He + π – and the charge-conjugate process). The measured values τ = [253 ± 11 (stat.) ± 6(syst.)] ps and B Λ = [102 ± 63 (stat.) ± 67 (syst.)] keV are compatible with predictions from effective field theories and confirm that the $^{3}_{Λ}$H structure is consistent with a weakly-bound system.

Bottomonium properties in the quark-gluon plasma from a lattice-QCD informed 𝑇-matrix approach

Recent computations of bottomonium correlation functions with extended sources in lattice-discretized quantum chromodynamics (lQCD) provide new insights into heavy-quark dynamics at distance scales which are of the order of the inverse temperature. We analyze these results employing the thermodynamic 𝑇-matrix framework, in a continued effort to interpret lQCD data for quarkonium correlation functions in a nonperturbative and self-consistently solved quantum-many-body approach to a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Its key inputs are the in-medium driving kernel (potential) of the scattering equation and an interference function which implements 3-body effects in the quarkonium coupling to the thermal medium. A simultaneous description of lQCD results for the bottomonium correlators with extended operators and the previously analyzed Wilson line correlators only requires minor refinements of the potential but calls for stronger interference effects at larger separation of the bottom quark and antiquark. We then analyze the poles of the self-consistent 𝑇 matrices on the real axis to assess the survival of the various bound states. Here, we estimate the pertinent temperatures where the poles disappear for the various bottomonium states and discuss the relation to the corresponding peaks in the bottomonium spectral functions. We also recalculate the spatial diffusion coefficient of the QGP and find it to be similar to that in our previous study.

Image mapping for multiple charge state beams using a beam induced fluorescence profile monitors

Work continues on a minimally invasive, nitrogen fluorescence gas sheet at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). A low density gas sheet may be used to observe the 2D transverse beam profile of high intensity, multiple charge state beams with minimal interference. Spatially and temporally correlated profiles are of particular interest in locations where there is significant charge state spread, such as the FRIB linac folding segments. A low-density gas sheet measurement system offers advantages for gas handling in nitrogen sensitive areas, however signal intensity is significantly lower than techniques using higher density gas sheets and jets. This work discusses measurement considerations for photon distributions generated by several spatially separated interaction points and design considerations for a high-sensitivity optics system for handling the expected low signal intensity.
