Simple transducer measures low heat-transfer rates

A simple transducer is used to measure low rates of convective and conductive heat transfer from a fluid to a cooled surface under steady-state conditions. Temperature drop is measured by two thermocouples imbedded in a rod of low thermal conductivity.

Propagation of density disturbances in air-water flow

Study investigated the behavior of density waves propagating vertically in an atmospheric pressure air-water system using a technique based on the correlation between density change and electric resistivity. This information is of interest to industries working with heat transfer systems and fluid power and control systems.

Performance map of a heat pipe charged with ammonia

Test results are presented which describe dryout in type-304 stainless steel heat pipes when ammonia is the working fluid. Graph compares heat transfer capabilities of both ammonia and water. Heat pipe apparatus and performance are described.

Supermaterials from the universe

The absence of gravity in space creates conditions favorable for the manufacture of completely uniform materials. In the space environment, molecular forces such as adhesion, cohesion, and capillary action take the place of gravity, and such phenomena as fluid mechanics and heat transfer come into prominence. Several experiments on materials production in orbit are reported.

Fluid dynamics of the unsteady two phase processes leading to DDT in granular solid propellants

Deflagration to Detonation (DDT) was predicted to occur in porous beds of high-energy solid propellants by solving the unsteady fluid mechanical convective heat transfer from hot gas products, obtained from the rapid burning at high pressures, provides the impetus to develop a narrow combustion zone and a resulting strong shock. A parametric study clearly indicates that DDT occurs only when a combination of the solids loading fraction, the burning rate constants, the propellant chemical energy, and the particle size provide for critical energy and gas release to support a detonation wave. Predictions for the run-up length to detonation as a function of these parameters are presented.

Grid evolution in time asymptotic problems

The selection of the proper coordinate system in solving any fluid flow or heat transfer problem is a very important consideration. A new technique of moving mesh points in physical space is introduced so as to reduce the error in a computed asymptotic solution relative to that obtained using a fixed mesh. The technique has been used to solve the simple viscous Burgers' equation in one and two dimensions. Substantial error reductions are demonstrated. The treatment of boundary points and the effect of using different error criteria in generating grids are discussed.

Thermocapillary flows and their stability: Effects of surface layers and contamination

The fluid mechanics and heat transfer of motions driven by surface tension gradients (Marangoni convection) were analyzed theoretically to obtain an understanding of the convection accompanying the process of growing high quality single crystals from the melt in a mu-g environment. The geometries considered include two dimensional liquid filled slots and axisymmetric float zone configurations.

Opportunities for research in aerothermodynamics

"Aerothermodynamics' involves the disciplines of chemistry, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer which have collaborative importance in propulsion systems. There are growing opportunities for the further application of these disciplines to improve the methodology for the design of advanced gas turbines; particularly, the combustor and turbine. Design procedures follow empirical or cut and try guidelines. The tremendous advances in computational analysis and in instrumentation techniques hold promise for research answers to complex physical processes that are currently not well understood. The transfer of basic research understanding to engineering design should result in shorter, less expensive development commitments for engines. The status and anticipated opportunities in research topics relevant to combustors and turbines is reviewed.
