Towards the Quantum Internet: Entanglement Rate Analysis of High-Efficiency Electro-Optic Transducer

Coherent microwave-optical photon conversion is a key enabling technology for the Quantum Internet, since it allows entanglement distribution among superconducting-based network nodes. A high-efficiency electro-optic transducer based on three-dimensional superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) technology has recently been proposed at Fermilab. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of Fermilab's transduction hardware on the entanglement generation probability and the entanglement rate, which are two critical metrics from a communication engineering perspective. Furthermore, we provide some guidelines to increase the direct entanglement rate, i.e., the rate before any entanglement purification process. Our analysis shows that, through high-efficiency transduction, it is possible to reduce the network overhead. This preliminary work paves the way toward distantly interconnected superconducting quantum processors.

Noncolinear Synthesis of Picosecond Flat-Top Laser Pulses to Increase Electron Photoinjector Brightness

Next-generation electron photoinjector accelerators, such as the LCLS-II photoinjector, have increasingly tight requirements on the excitation lasers, often calling for tens of picosecond, temporally flat-top, ultraviolet (UV) pulse trains to be delivered at up to 1 MHz[1]. We present a numerical and experimental implementation of a non-colinear sum frequency generation scheme wherein the incident optical pulses have equal and opposite amounts of spectral dispersion resulting in a spectrally narrowband pulse with flat-top temporal profile[2]. In preliminary experiments we achieve upwards of 40% conversion efficiency with this process. We additionally demonstrate the ability for the narrowband pulses to be directly upconverted to the UV for driving a photocathode.

Parallel operation of two Brayton-cycle alternators with parasitic speed controllers

The experimental paralleling characteristics of two 1200 Hz Brayton-cycle alternators are presented. Since the Brayton power conversion system uses electric speed controllers, the paralleling requirements are somewhat different from those for conventional ground-based systems. Results include the transient effects of synchronizing the two alternators with various phase-angle, voltage, and frequency differences. Based on these results, the effects of synchronizing differences can be defined, and adjustment requirements of the parasitic speed controllers during synchronizing can be established. Data indicate that parasitically loaded alternators are able to parallel over a wide range of synchronizing differences. However, equilibrium could not be reached in extreme cases where alternator load differences were great and, at the same time, the phase-angle error was large (150 deg or more).

Economical synthesis of potassium superoxide

High-frequency discharge in oxygen can be used to prepare superoxides of alkali and alkaline-earth metals. Since no direct-current discharge at the electrodes is present, no sputtering can contaminate the product, hence a high conversion efficiency.

Observations of Enhanced Radar Backscatter (ERB) from Millstone Hill

Intense enhancements of the incoherent radar backscatter spectrum from the topside ionosphere were observed with the Millstone Hill UHF radar. Enhancements occurring at the local ion acoustic frequency causing large asymmetries in the measured ion line may be produced by current driven instabilities. These enhancements pose a practical problem for space surveillance systems because their cross section and spectral width are characteristic of satellites. Conversely, their hard target signature complicates the study of naturally occurring ERB events; it is nearly impossible to distinguish them from satellites based on a single measurement. Statistical comparisons of observed coherent echo distributions with predictions from a satellite catalog were used to broadly identify periods of ERB activity. A series of experiments using multiple diagnostics, including satellite instruments, for simultaneous observations have established the association of ERB with large fluxes of soft suprathermal electrons carrying field aligned currents. Zenith data are also presented which show the asymmetric growth of ion acoustic waves directly above Millstone Hill. Details of these results are presented.

Spatial frequency multiplier with active linearly tapered slot antenna array

A frequency multiplier with active linearly tapered slot antennas (LTSA's) has been demonstrated at the second harmonic frequency. In each antenna element, a GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) distributed amplifier is integrated with two LTSA's. The multiplier has a very wide bandwidth and large dynamic range. The fundamental-to-second harmonic conversion efficiency is 8.1 percent. The spatially combined second harmonic signal is 50 dB above the noise level. The design is suitable for constructing a large array using monolithic integration techniques.

UV Generation of 25 mJ/pulse at 289 nm for Ozone Lidar

Our paper describes a technique for generating tunable UV laser radiation between 250-300 nm capable of energies up to 30-5O mJ/pulse. The tunability of this source is attractive for selecting ozone absorption cross sections which are optimal for ozone DIAL detection throughout the troposphere. A Nd:YAG laser is used to pump a pulsed titanium sapphire laser which is then frequency tripled into the UV. Titanium sapphire (TiS) lases robustly between 750-900 nm. In initial experiments we have converted 110 mJ of 867 nm from a TiS laser into 28 mJ at 289 nm. The energy conversion efficiency was 62% for doubling into 433 nm and 25% into 289 nm.

Analysis and measurements of low frequency lightning component penetration through aerospace vehicle metal and graphite skins

An analysis of the shielding properties of mixed metal and graphite composite structures has illustrated some important aspects of electromagnetic field penetration into the interior. These include: (1) that graphite access doors on metallic structures will attenuate lightning magnetic fields very little; conversely, metal doors on a graphite structure will also attenuate fields from lightning strike currents very little, i.e., homogeneity of the shield is a critical factor in shielding and (2) that continuous conductors between two points inside a graphite skin such as an air data probe metallic tubing connection to an air data computer can allow large current penetrations into a vehicle interior. The true weight savings resulting from the use of composite materials can only be evaluated after the resulting electromagnetic problems such as current penetrations have been solved, and this generally requires weight addition in the form of cable shields, conductor bonding or external metallization.

Characterisation of frequency doubling in Eu(2+) doped aluminosilicate fibres

The results of a series of experiments on efficient second-harmonic generation in a fiber with a Eu(2+)-doped aluminosilicate core are reported. The fiber was prepared by the seeding method with CW mode-locked radiation at 1.06 micron and produced ultrastable peak conversion efficiencies of 0.001 during mode-locked readout. Experiments were performed to determine the IR preparation intensity dependence, the stability of the output, and the type of erasure mechanisms which occur. The results are compared with those of germanosilicate fibers and some similarities and differences are discussed.

A perspective on the electro-thermal co-design of ultra-wide bandgap lateral devices

Fundamental research and development of ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductor devices are under way to realize next-generation power conversion and wireless communication systems. Devices based on aluminum gallium nitride (AlxGa1-xN, x is the Al composition), ..beta..-phase gallium oxide (..beta..-Ga2O3), and diamond give promise to the development of power switching devices and radio frequency power amplifiers with higher performance and efficiency than commercial wide bandgap semiconductor devices based on gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC). However, one of the most critical challenges for the successful deployment of UWBG device technologies is to overcome adverse thermal effects that impact the device performance and reliability. Overheating of UWBG devices originates from the projected high power density operation and poor intrinsic thermal properties of AlxGa1-xN and ..beta..-Ga2O3. This Perspective delineates the need and process for the "electro-thermal co-design" of laterally configured UWBG electronic devices and provides a comprehensive review of current state-of-the-art thermal characterization methods, device thermal modeling practices, and both device- and package-level thermal management solutions.

Design and Analysis of an Integral MPPT Control Law for Wave Energy Conversion Systems

In this paper, we propose an integral-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm for point absorber wave energy conversion (WEC) systems. A permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is coupled to the point absorber and its drive implements the proposed MPPT control. While the rotating frame of reference of the PMSG implements power control, the slower mechanical frequency of the incident waves are processed with an additional transformation that yields another set of dc dynamics. The computed dc power in the new reference frame, which is focused on slow wave dynamics, is input to the MPPT control law that tunes the emulated resistance of the machine drive to extract peak power from the wave absorber device. We derive a stability condition for the proposed controller and validate our control design on a simulated 10kW system.

Fast quantum interferometry at the nanometer and attosecond scales with energy-entangled photons

In classical optical interferometry, loss and background complicate achieving fast nanometer-resolution measurements with illumination at low light levels. Conversely, quantum two-photon interference is unaffected by loss and background, but nanometer-scale resolution is physically difficult to realize. As a solution, we enhance two-photon interference with highly nondegenerate energy entanglement featuring photon frequencies separated by 177 THz. We observe measurement resolution at the nanometer (attosecond) scale with only O(10 4 ) photon pairs, despite the presence of background and loss. Our nondestructive thickness measurement of a metallic thin film agrees with atomic force microscopy, which often achieves better resolution via destructive means. With contactless, nondestructive measurements in seconds or faster, our instrument enables metrological studies in optically challenging contexts where background, loss, or photosensitivity are factors.

Chemical and Optical Control of Spin Crossover: Ultrafast XUV Spectroscopy of Molecular Magnets in Native Solvation Environments

With support from the US Department of Energy Office of Science, we have developed and utilized extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopy and sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy as probes of charge, spin, and solvation structure and dynamics in molecules and at interfaces. This work is crucial to advancing fundamental understanding of the processes that control the efficiency and speed of energy conversion and information processing in molecules and at interfaces. Accordingly, it has important applications for developing next generation technologies for information storage and processing with increasing data storage density and processing rates as well as developing new methods for efficient energy conversion and storage.

Low-level VLF and LR radio emissions observed at earth and Jupiter

Major observational features of magnetospheric VLF-LF radio noise that have been uncovered by the IMP, Hawkeye and ISEE satellites, are examined with emphasis on the capabilities of the noise to diagnose local and remote plasma parameters. The relationship of the radiation to not less than 1-mV/m electrostatic upper hybrid emissions is assessed, and indirect observational evidence suggests that upper noise is associated with the generation of the VLF-LF radiation. Theoretical luminosities of mechanisms including synchrotron radiation, linear mode conversion of upper hybrid waves and nonlinear scattering of upper hybrid waves off plasma density irregularities are estimated, and the wave-wave scattering hypothesis is considered to be a viable mechanism if the presence of low-frequency waves as a scattering agent can be established.

The development of a power spectral density processor for C and L band airborne radar scatterometer sensor systems

A real-time signal processor was developed for the NASA/JSC L-and C-band airborne radar scatterometer sensor systems. The purpose of the effort was to reduce ground data processing costs. Conversion of two quadrature channels of data (like and cross polarized) was made to obtain Power Spectral Density (PSD) values. A chirp-z transform (CZT) approach was used to filter the Doppler return signal and improved high frequency and angular resolution was realized. The processors have been tested with record signals and excellent results were obtained. CZT filtering can be readily applied to scatterometers operating at other wavelengths by altering the sample frequency. The design of the hardware and software and the results of the performance tests are described in detail.
