Potato respirometer experiment SO61

The design and manufacture of a respirometer for measuring the oxygen consumption rate of a respiring potato sprout in a Skylab experiment is reported. The device monitors low gravity effects on the biorhythmicity of organisms during space flight. Several experimental runs using bench mounted flight hardware units were inconclusive due to room temperature induced artifacts.

VHF Ranging and Position Fixing Experiment Using ATS Satellites: Final Report on Phases 1 and 2, 25 November 1968 - 1 May 1971

The testing program with the ATS-1 and ATS-3 spacecraft showed that geostationary satellites can provide superior communications and position surveillance for mobile craft. Inexpensive modifications to conventional mobile communications equipment aboard the craft can provide reliable, high quality voice and digital communications with distant ground stations and other vehicles, and automatic surveillance of the positions of all the craft by a ground facility. The tests also demonstrated the location and automatic readout of remote data collection platforms. Frequency modulation signals with the narrow audio and radio frequency bandwidths of terrestrial mobile radio communications were relayed through the VHF transponders of the geostationary satellites. The voice and digital communications were far superior in reliability and quality to long-distance mobile communications by other means. It was shown that one satellite can provide nearly uniform high quality performance over approximately one-third of the earth's surface. Position fixes by range measurement from the two satellites were accurate to approximately one nautical mile, except near the equator and the poles.

Preliminary experiments on the noise generated by target-type thrust reverser models

Experiments are reported on the noise generated by model V-gutter and semicylindrical target-type reversers with circular nozzles. Nozzles were 5.24 and 7.78 cm in diameter. Nozzle pressure ratio ranged from 1.25 to 1.72. The spacing between reversers and nozzle, as well as the reverser orientation, was also varied. More noise was generated with reversers than with the nozzle alone. The measured maximum overall sound pressure level varied with the sixth power of the nozzle exit velocity. Noise levels were more uniform in regard to directivity with reversers than with the nozzle alone. It is concluded that thrust reversers, can be a significant noise problem, especially for STOL aircraft using thrust reversers during approach.

Project Tektite 1: A multiagency 60-day saturated dive

The history, organization, and accomplishments of Project Tektite are presented. The project demonstrated that it is possible for men to live and work successfully at underwater depths of 49 feet. The biomedical responses of the aquanauts to the 60 day dive are described. The behavioral and psychological responses to each other, the work, and the isolated environment are reported. The experiments conducted in the fields of marine science, psychological sciences, and biomedical sciences are discussed.

The 1971 corn blight watch experiment

The successful fulfillment of the objectives for the 1971 corn blight watch experiment is reported. The objectives were: (1) detect the development and spread of corn blight during the growing season across the Corn Belt; (2) assess different levels of infection in the Corn Belt; (3) amplify data acquired by ground observations to better appraise current blight status and the probable impact on crop production; and (4) estimate through extrapolation the applicability of these techniques to similar situations occurring in the future.

Analysis of signal to noise enhancement using a highly selective modulation tracking filter

Experiments are reported which utilize photodielectric effects in semiconductor loaded superconducting resonant circuits for suppressing noise in RF communication systems. The superconducting tunable cavity acts as a narrow band tracking filter for detecting conventional RF signals. Analytical techniques were developed which lead to prediction of signal-to-noise improvements. Progress is reported in optimization of the experimental variables. These include improved Q, new semiconductors, improved optics, and simplification of the electronics. Information bearing signals were passed through the system, and noise was introduced into the computer model.

Amorphous magnetism in fcc Vicalloy 2

The results of magnetization and Mossbauer experiments are reported which give evidence for superparamagnetism in the quenched face centered cubic (gamma) phase of the ternary system Fe(0.34)C(0.52)V(0.14) (Vicalloy 2). while the magnetization data agree with the limited data of Nesbitt et al., this more complete study shows clearly that this alloy does not acquire long-range ferromagnetic order, nor does it indicate either antiferromagnetic long-range ordering or mictomagnetic behavior, down to 4.2 K. The data can best be described as resulting from ferromagnetic clusters in a weakly magnetic lattice. The Mossbauer data show a slightly broadened single line spectrum of 300 K which broadens with decreasing temperature without development of resolvable hyperfine splitting down to 4.2 K. The broadening is attributed to relaxation effects associated with magnetic cluster coalescence.

Magnetogasdynamic heat transfer to a hemispherical body in a supersonic argon plasma.

Measurements of the heat transfer to a hemispherical body in a Mach 4.6, low density, argon plasma are reported. The experiments demonstrated that local wall currents affected the heat flux to the electrically conducting surface, both without and with internally applied magnetic fields. Such currents were induced by a nonuniform shock-layer plasma potential; but with applied fields, Hall currents dominated. Magnetic fields significantly increased the stagnation-region heat flux while causing a reduction over the remainder of the hemisphere. For an electrically nonconducting surface, the local heat flux was reduced, and magnetic fields insignificantly affected the heat flux. Analytical treatments indicate that joule and radiation heating were negligible.

Interactions among multiple lines in the 8446-A atomic-oxygen laser.

The atomic-oxygen laser oscillates at four closely spaced frequencies on the gain profile of the 8446-A fine-structure transitions. A set of experiments is reported which studies the competition among these four lines by suppressing one of them. The results are explained on the basis of the interaction of laser lines oscillating on Doppler-broadened transitions sharing a common lower level.

Thick film silicon growth techniques

The research which was directed toward finding an improved die material is reported. Wetting experiments were conducted with various materials to determine their compatibility with silicon. Work has also continued toward the development of quartz as a die material as new techniques have provided more optimistic results than observed in the past. As a result of the thermal modification previously described, improvements in growth stability have contributed to an increase in ribbon quality.

ATS-5 ranging receiver and L-band experiment, volume 1

The ATS-5 Ranging Receiver and L-band Experiment Final Report contains information describing the L-band ranging receiver and preliminary results of test data obtained in the Mojave station. Also covered is a brief program history and description of the installation and testing phase of the program at Mojave Ground Station. The ranging receiver was designed to utilize tone ranging techniques, with the tones being supplied from the station ATS ranging system. The receiver is used in conjunction with the station L-band transmit/receive system.
