Ion heating by strong electrostatic ion cyclotron turbulence

A theory of the ion heating due to electrostatic ion cyclotron (EIC) waves in the auroral zone is presented. Due to the slowly convecting nature of the EIC mode, quasi-linear plateau formation cannot stabilize the waves, and growth occurs until the nonlinear mechanisms of ion resonance broadening and electron trapping provide saturation. The large amplitude and coherent nature of the resulting wave imply that quasi-linear theory provides only a lower limit to the ion heating. An upper bound on the heating rate is derived using a time-average model of ion dynamics in the coherent waves. The effects of ion heating in the presence of the magnetic gradient force and parallel electric fields are considered, with the result that perpendicular energies over 100 eV are easily attainable from a 1 eV source plasma. Perpendicular heating in the absence of a parallel electric field yields conical ion distributions, which in the presence of an electric field become field-aligned beams.

Electrical torques on the electrostatic gyro in the gyro relativity experiment

A comprehensive discussion and calculation of electrical torques on an electrostatic gyro as they relate to the gyroscope experiment to test general relativity is presented. Drift rates were computed for some typical state of the art rotors, including higher harmonics in the rotor shape. The effect of orbital averaging of gravity gradient forces, roll averaging of torques, and the effect of spin averaging on the effective shape of the rotor were considered. The electrical torques are reduced sufficiently in a low g environment to permit a measurement of the relativistic drifts predicted by general relativity.

Internal electrostatic discharge hazard risk assessment to the Galileo orbiter

A worst case assessment was performed on the Command Data System (CDS) multilayer printed circuit board and an output power transformer module in the power subsystem. An estimate of the Jovian environment during the 35 hour orbit insertion was supplied by JPL and used as an input to calculate the electron transport into the Galileo components. A radiation shielding analysis computer code, CHARGE, calculated the electron transport deposition trapped in the anticipated sensitive areas of the multilayer board and transformer module. Based on these trapped charge calculations electric fields were calculated between the identified isolated areas and the spacecraft ground. The results of the assessment of electrostatic discharge (DSD) in the CDS multilayer printed circuit board indicate that the probability of ESD in the FR4 is low. The probability of ESD in the components attached to the multilayer board, however, is uncertain based on a lack of prior experimental data.

Electrostatic bonding of thin (approximately 3 mil) 7070 cover glass to Ta2O5 AR-coated thin (approximately 2 mil) silicon wafers and solar cells

Electrostatic bonding (ESB) of thin (3 mil) Corning 7070 cover glasses to Ta2O5 AR-coated thin (2 mil) silicon wafers and solar cells is investigated. An experimental program was conducted to establish the effects of variations in pressure, voltage, temperature, time, Ta2O5 thickness, and various prebond glass treatments. Flat wafers without contact grids were used to study the basic effects for bonding to semiconductor surfaces typical of solar cells. Solar cells with three different grid patterns were used to determine additional requirements caused by the raised metallic contacts.

On a theory of temporal fluctuations in the electrostatic potential structures associated with auroral arcs

A possible mechanism is presented for the generation of large-amplitude temporal fluctuations in the structure of the electron energization region associated with auroral arcs. The mechanism is based on the observation that the auroral arc system resembles a laboratory circuit consisting of the series connection of battery, resistance and a forward biased diode containing collisionless plasma in which large-amplitude relaxation oscillations are sometimes observed to be superimposed on the steady-state current. It is shown that in both the laboratory and auroral systems, in which a localized auroral arc dynamo, the ionosphere and the electron energization region are involved, the oscillations are controlled by the times for ions and electrons to traverse the acceleration region, which also characterize the low- and high-frequency structure of the fluctuating waveform. It is demonstrated that a plausible one-dimensional double-layer model of the auroral arc acceleration region exhibits the dynamic negative resistance necessary for the generation of oscillations by the present mechanism. Finally, consideration is given to two kinds of auroral phenomena which might be associated with the mechanism: the 10-Hz quasi-periodic flickering aurora and 10-Hz modulations in the intensity of electrostatic hydrogen cyclotron waves.

Simulation of the current-driven electrostatic ion cyclotron instability

Results are presented of a self-consistent particle simulation of the growth and saturation of electrostatic ion cyclotron (EIC) waves along auroral field lines. The driving mechanism for the waves is an initial drifting Maxwellian distribution for the electrons. The magnetic field is taken to lie in the simulation plane, so that modes such as the ion acoustic instability and the EIC instability can be excited, thus making it possible to study the behavior of EIC waves in the presence of ion acoustic turbulence. A dc electric field, which tends to keep the current constant along the field lines, is included. It is shown that the EIC instability grows to a moderate level before saturating due to plateau formation. The perpendicular ion temperature increases by typically 40%, with an increase arising from bulk heating only. The anomalous resistivity, associated with the EIC instability is determined and compared with previous calculations and with that due to the ion acoustic instability. Implications of the results for observation of ion cyclotron waves on auroral field lines are discussed.

Electrostatic discharging behaviour of Kapton irradiated with electrons

The electrostatic charging and discharging of Kapton when irradiated with monoenergetic electrons of 5 to 30 keV energy were studied. The leakage currents and rates of discharging always increased with the incident electron energy and flux, whereas the surface voltage showed a more complex behavior depending on the thickness of the material: for the thinner films it exhibited a maximum and then fell at higher energies. The surface voltage, the rate of discharging, and the peak current and total charge flow during a discharge were enhanced as the temperature was decreased from 70 C to -180 C, and were accompanied by a decreasing leakage current. Visible light or the presence of an aluminum coating on the irradiated surface caused reductions in the surface voltage and changes in the discharging characteristics. The results are discussed in terms of the leakage currents and the secondary emission of electrons. Photomicrographs taken after irradiation, and photographs of samples during irradiation, show good correlations between the positions of light flashes and of pinholes produced by the discharge arcs.

Droplets Generated from a new OGEE shaped, liquid, air-shear, electrostatic nozzle

A series of experimental tests was carried out on an 'OGEE' shaped planform, liquid air-shear electrostatic nozzle. Liquid was ejected from the upper surface of the nozzle and was then dispersed and atomized efficiently by a high speed air flow passing over the nozzle and by the effect of two very strong coherent air vortices generated by the 'OGEE' shaped nozzle surface. Initial test results which are presented show the nozzle to perform far superior to a similar delta wing shaped design which is used extensively in various industries applications.

Conceptual design and analysis of a large antenna utilizing electrostatic membrane management

Conceptual designs and associated technologies for deployment 100 m class radiometer antennas were developed. An electrostatically suspended and controlled membrane mirror and the supporting structure are discussed. The integrated spacecraft including STS cargo bay stowage and development were analyzed. An antenna performance evaluation was performed as a measure of the quality of the membrane/spacecraft when used as a radiometer in the 1 GHz to 5 GHz region. Several related LSS structural dynamic models differing by their stiffness property (and therefore, lowest modal frequencies) are reported. Control system whose complexity varies inversely with increasing modal frequency regimes are also reported. Interactive computer-aided-design software is discussed.

Calculation and observation of thermal electrostatic noise in solar wind plasma

Calculations, both approximate algebraic and numerical, have been carried out for the noise due to electrostatic waves incident on a dipole antenna. The noise is calculated both for a thermal equilibrium plasma, and one having several components at different temperatures. The results are compared with measurements from the IMP-6 satellite. In various frequency ranges, the noise power is dominated by Langmuir oscillations, by electron acoustic waves and by ion acoustic waves. The measurements are consistent with all of these, although the ion waves are not definitely observed, due to interference from shot noise.
