On the estimation of metal-metal distortions for metal-metal orbital electronic ionizations and excitations

Reference is made to the work of Lichtenberger and Blevins (1984), who resolved a nu(Mo2) vibronic structure in the metal-metal delta-orbital photoelectron ionization band of Mo2(O2CCH3) in the gas phase at 200 C and performed a Franck-Condon analysis of the observed band profile. In the analysis, 'hot bands' were explicitly excluded as having any important effect on the Franck-Condon results. In the analytical study reported in the present paper, it is demonstrated that the thermal effects are indeed significant.

Minimizing the total harmonic distortion for a 3 kW, 20 kHz ac to dc converter using SPICE

This paper describes the SPICE model of a transformer-rectified-filter (TRF) circuit and the Micro-CAP (Microcomputer Circuit Analysis Program) model and their application. The models were used to develop an actual circuit with reduced input current THD. The SPICE analysis consistently predicted the THD improvements in actual circuits as various designs were attempted. In an effort to predict and verify load regulation, the incorporation of saturable inductor models significantly improved the fidelity of the TRF circuit output voltage.

Degradation of signal-to-noise ratio due to amplitude distortion

The effect of filtering on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a coherently demodulated band-limited signal is determined in the presence of worst-case amplitude ripple. The problem is formulated as an optimizaton in the Hilbert space L2. The form of the worst-case amplitude ripple is specified, and the degradation in the SNR is derived in closed form. It is shown that, when the maximum passband amplitude ripple is 2Delta (peak-to-peak), the SNR is degraded by at most (1-Delta-squared), even when the ripple is unknown or uncompensated. For example, an SNR loss of less than 0.01 dB due to amplitude ripple can be assured by keeping the amplitude ripple under 0.42 dB.

Enhanced imaging of reflector antenna surface distortion using microwave holography

Two signal processing techniques are discussed that improve the accuracy of a microwave holographic measurement by removing unwanted signals from the aperture distribution: pattern simulation and subtraction, and time domain filtering. Pattern simulation and subtraction involves modeling unwanted scattering mechanisms and then removing them from the measured far-field data. Measurements taken on a focal point geometry and a Cassegrain geometry at 11 GHz were processed by the holographic analysis system. Pattern simulation and subtraction was applied to both geometries. Surface deformation profiles generated for the Cassegrain antenna by this system were compared to an optical measurement of the main reflector surface.

The distortion of the magnetotail equilibrium structure by a net cross-tail magnetic field

Explicit solutions are presented for quiet, quasi-static magnetotail configurations in the presence of a net cross-tail magnetic field component in addition to field components associated with tail flaring. The solutions are derived using the general three-dimensional equilibrium theory of Birn (1987). It is found that the net By(N) field varies only weakly along field lines and across the tail. The presence of the net By(N) in the neutral sheet implies that a part of the cross-tail current becomes field-aligned, flowing from the southern to the northern hemisphere for By(N) larger than zero and from north to south for By(n) less than zero. The deformations of magnetic flux surfaces suggest that there may be a class of field lines extending from the earth into the magnetosheath region through the low-latitude flanks of the tail. A topological connection is found of the low-latitude region near the magnetopause with the plasma sheet boundary layer, separating closed plasma sheet and open lobe field lines.

An optical technique to measure ion engine grid distortion due to differential thermal expansion

This paper describes an optical technique developed for measuring small differential grid displacements due to thermal expansion of an ion thruster accelerator system. The technique is based on confocal scanning optical microscope type II. For the measurements of small displacements where there are distances on the order of a meter or more between the lens plane and the sample, some of the optical components are moved while the sample is kept fixed. The feasibility of applying this technique to measure the thermally induced ion thruster grid displacements was demonstrated in a bench-top simulation. It is noted that this technique can also provide information on grid movement resulting from thermal transients such as the start-up.

The effect of small streamwise velocity distortion on the boundary layer flow over a thin flat plate with application to boundary layer stability theory

Researchers show how an initially linear spanwise disturbance in the free stream velocity field is amplified by leading edge bluntness effects and ultimately leads to a small amplitude but linear spanwise motion far downstream from the edge. This spanwise motion is imposed on the boundary layer flow and ultimately causes an order-one change in its profile shape. The modified profiles are highly unstable and can support Tollmein-Schlichting wave growth well upstream of the theoretical lower branch of the neutral stability curve for a Blasius boundary layer.

Microwave distortions from collapsing domain-wall bubbles

It has been suggested that large-scale structure can be seeded by a postrecombination phase transition that produces soft domain walls. It is found that oscillating domain-wall bubbles produce a distinctive signature on the microwave sky; hot and cold spots with amplitude characterized by G(sigma)/H0 (sigma is the surface tension of the wall). These fluctuations are non-Gaussian and offer a powerful probe of such models.

Restoration of distorted depth maps calculated from stereo sequences

A model-based Kalman estimator is developed for spatial-temporal filtering of noise and other degradations in velocity and depth maps derived from image sequences or cinema. As an illustration of the proposed procedures, edge information from image sequences of rigid objects is used in the processing of the velocity maps by selecting from a series of models for directional adaptive filtering. Adaptive filtering then allows for noise reduction while preserving sharpness in the velocity maps. Results from several synthetic and real image sequences are given.

Geometric distortion analysis of a wide-field astrograph

Ground-based optical navigation seeks to determine the angular position of a star, Solar System body, or laser-emitting spacecraft relative to objects with well-known coordinates. Measurement accuracies of 25 nrad would make optical techniques competitive with current radio metric technology. This article examines a proposed design for a wide-field astrograph and concludes that the deviation of an image centroid from the ideal projection can be modeled to the desired accuracy provided that the field of view does not exceed 5 deg on a side.
