Isolated Stroemgren spheres as a source of galactic H alpha emission

The isolated H alpha emission features reported by Reynolds et al. are identified with Stroemgren spheres surrounding observed O stars; the root mean square electron densities and Stroemgren radii are calculated from the observed emission measure and stellar type. The density has an average value of 2 per cu cm but increases to 3.3 per cu cm for stars within 200 pc of the galactic plane. An analysis of the Catalogue of Galactic O Stars shows that enhanced H alpha emission is observed around all known O stars. The diffuse component of H alpha emission is what one would expect from the line-of-sight overlapping of isolated Stroemgren spheres surrounding B stars and appears to correlate with features on extinction maps, as derived. There is no compelling reason to suggest any large-scale intercloud ionization from H alpha data alone.

Investigation of structure-property relationships in systematic series of novel polymers

Solid state transitions in polymeric materials was associated with the onset of sub-molecular motions of the polymer chains. Although these were considered to be intramolecular in general, the local environment of the polymer molecule exerts a strong influence through, for example, the effects of crystallinity, polarity and diluents. The manner of specimen preparation and previous history also affect transitions. The transitions are considered to arise when sufficient free volume is available to permit the occurrence of these side chain and backbone reorientations. The glass transition is the principal transition of amorphous polymeric materials and is associated with the onset of long range segmental motion of the polymer backbone. The various types of shorter range motion occurring below the glass transition have been catalogued.

Analysis of data for LANDSAT (ERTS) follow-on

The author has identified the following significant results. Daily weather service satellite photographs of the midwest were found to be of great assistance before ordering EROS Data Center products. These weather satellite images are a quick and inexpensive record of the location of cloud masses, which supplements the percent of cloud catalogues. Savings of time and money were made because the location of cloud cover was known before any imagery was ordered.

Predicted favorable visibility conditions for anomalous tails of comets

Visibility conditions are used to list the comets that have displayed a sunward dust tail during the time of earth's passage through the orbital plane of the comet. A computer program describing the conditions for this type of antitail observability was applied to the Catalogue of Cometary Orbits (Marsden, 1975), starting with the comets of 1737. It is shown that only about 20-30% of the nearly parabolic comets that should have displayed an antitail at the node were actually observed to do so. There appears to be a general absence of antitails among the short period comets.

Radio source positions from very-long-baseline interferometry observations

Accurate positions of compact radio sources have been determined from very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations based on the bandwidth-synthesis technique. The coordinates for 18 extragalactic sources were obtained from sets of observations spread over the period from April 1972 to January 1975; the scatter among the independent determinations of the source coordinates from the separate sets of observations is about 0.05 arcsec, except for the declinations of near-equatorial sources, where the scatter is about 0.15 arcsec. Comparison of these positions with those determined with the Cambridge 5-km radio interferometer shows the rms scatter about the mean difference to be about 0.04 arcsec in each coordinate (no sources of low declination were in common). A similar comparison of the present results with those obtained by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from separate VLBI observations yields a slightly larger rms scatter, after exlusion of the declinations of the near-equatorial sources. A position is also obtained for the galactic object Beta Persei (Algol), which agrees well with the position given in the FK 4 catalogue.

Space photography - A valuable tool for surface mine planning

Some plausible advantages of remote sensing from orbit in inventorying of strip-mined land areas are noted, but heavy emphasis is placed on the limitations of such information at the present state of the art, in this application, and on the different types of information extracted from high-resolution imagery by experts of differing backgrounds. Skylab multispectral sensors are described and land use categories encountered in strip mining are catalogued. While oversell of remote sensing applied to strip mining land use inventory is deprecated, planning ahead for effective use of Space Shuttle in this area in the coming years is encouraged.

Observations of low luminosity X-ray sources in Vela-Puppis

Results of a study of the X-ray emission from a small portion of the galactic plane near galactic longitude 260 deg are presented. This region contains at least six low luminosity X-ray sources within approximately 10 deg. of PSRO833-45, which is near the center of the Gum Nebula. The X-ray source associated with the Vela pulsar, 4U0833-45, is observed at twice its 4U catalogue intensity. The lack of X-ray pulsations at the pulsar period, the non thermal power law spectrum, and models of the X-ray come from an extended source approximately 1 deg in radius. The observation of a high temperature spectrum in a field of view containing only Puppis A among known sources has led to the discovery of a new OSO-8 source, OSO752-39. Other spectra from this region are discussed.

The effects of target characteristics on fresh crater morphology - Preliminary results for the moon and Mercury

The results are reported of an analysis of the characteristics of fresh crater samples occurring on the two major geologic units on the moon (maria and highlands) and on Mercury (smooth plains and cratered terrain). In particular, the onset diameters and abundances of central peaks and terraces are examined and compared for both geologic units on each planet in order to detect any variations that might be due to geologic unit characteristics. The analysis of lunar crater characteristics is based on information provided in the LPL Catalog of Lunar Craters of Wood and Andersson (1977). The Mercurian data set utilized is related to a program involving the cataloguing of Mercurian craters visible in Mariner 10 photography. It is concluded that the characteristics of the substrate have exerted a measurable influence on the occurrence of central peaks, terraces, and scallops in flash crater samples. Therefore, in order to compare the morphologic characteristics of fresh crater populations between planets, an analysis of possible substrate-related differences must first be undertaken for each planet under consideration. It is suggested that large variations in gravity do not produce major variations in crater wall failure.

Helios-2 Vela-Ariel-5 gamma-ray burst source position

The gamma-ray burst of 28 January 1976, one of 18 events thus far detected in interplanetary space with Helios-2, was also observed with the Vela-5A, -6A and the Ariel-5 satellites. A small source field is obtained from the intersection of the region derived from the observed time delays between Helios-2 and Vela-5A and -6A with the source region independently found with the Ariel-5 X-ray detector. This area contains neither any steady X-ray source as scanned by HEAO-A nor any previously catalogued X-ray, radio or infrared sources, X-ray transients, quasars, seyferts, globular clusters, flare stars, pulsars, white dwarfs or high energy gamma-ray sources. The region is however, within the source field of a gamma-ray transient observed in 1974, which exhibited nuclear gamma-ray line structure.

HD-SAO-DM cross index

A table of correspondence SAO-HD-DM-GC was prepared by Morin (1973). The machine-readable version of this cross identification was obtained from the Centre de Donnees Stellaires (Strasbourg, France). The table was sorted at the Goddard Space Flight Center by HD number and all blank HD number records were removed to produce the HD-SAO-DM table presented. There were 258997 entries in the original table; there are 180411 entries after removing the blank HD records. The Boss General Catalogue (GC) numbers were retained on the machine-readable version after the sort.

Low Cost Solar Array Project: Composition Measurements by Analytical Photo Catalysis

The applicability of the photon catalysis technique for effecting composition analysis of silicon samples is discussed. A detector for the impurities Al, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ti, V, Mo and Zr is evaluated. During the first reporting period Al, Cr, Fe, and Mn were detected with the photon catalysis method. The best fluorescence lines to monitor and determine initial sensitivities to each of these elements by atomic absorption calibration were established. In the course of these tests vapor pressure curves for these four pure substances were also mapped. Ti and Si were detected. The best lines to monitor were catalogued and vapor pressure curves were determined. Attempts to detect vanadium were unsuccessful due to the refractory nature of this element and the limited temperature range of the evaporator.

N galaxies - A new class of X-ray sources

It is shown that in addition to many Seyfert galaxies and quasars, N galaxies are also powerful X-ray sources. X-ray emission has been discovered from all six N galaxies in the 3C radio catalogue with redshifts less than 0.06 and from the N galaxy Pic A. Since many of the N galaxies possess compact radio components, it is suggested that the principle cause of X-ray emission may be the synchrotron self-Compton process. An alternate theory suggests that X-rays may be generated by gas clouds colliding with velocities of the order of the Doppler width of the broad lines.

Secondary standards for BVRI photometry

A thorough test of Fernie's instrumentation system for matching the Johnson BVRI photometric system has been made. From 1,526 observations of 186 stars in the Arizona-Tonantzintla Catalogue, there were found excellent transformations, except for a slight curvature in the (B-V) transformation, which is easily removed, and a difficulty in (R-I) for highly reddened stars. Photometric values and their uncertainties are given for all the stars, and these are of sufficient quality to serve as secondary standards in BVRI for small- to moderate-size telescopes (1-m).
