Design, calibration, and performance of a uniaxial pressure cell for neutron scattering studies of quantum magnetism

Here we provide an overview of a pressure cell designed to apply uniaxial pressure to single crystals for the study, by neutron scattering techniques, of strongly correlated magnetic systems and, in particular, quantum magnets. A detailed overview of the pressure cell components, their requirements, and links to the scientific and technical specifications are presented. The pressure cell is able to accommodate a 200 mm 3 single crystal that can be pressurized up to 2 GPa at cryogenic temperatures. The pressure cell is consistent with the requirements of inelastic neutron scattering and, importantly, neutron polarization analysis. A particular strength of the uniaxial pressure cell is the highly uniform and low background for a wide scattering angle of 360° horizontally and ±20° vertically. We show the performance of the uniaxial pressure cell using a relevant neutron scattering instrument, the polarized diffuse scattering instrument, D7. The experiments confirm that the cell complies with the scientific and technical requirements. This uniaxial pressure cell will provide a useful additional tool in the sample environment suite available for the study of quantum magnetism.

Calibration of ruby and matlockite luminescence lines from the melting of mercury: constraints on the initial slopes

We have measured the luminescence shifts of the ruby’s R1- and R2-lines and the line of 5 D 0 → 7 F 0 from Sm 2+ :SrFCl corresponding to the melting pressure of mercury that is recommended by the AIRAPT task force as an International Practical Pressure Scale (IPPS). The linear coefficients of the pressure dependence of the R1-, R2-lines, and the luminescence line of Sm 2+ :SrFCl are determined to be 0.3722 ± 0.002, 0.3796 ± 0.002, and 1.123 ± 0.002 nm/GPa, respectively. The results not only put tight constraints on the initial slopes of ruby and Sm 2+ :SrFCl gauges, but also link the luminescence-based pressure gauges to the more fundamental primary piston gauges.

Calibration sources for the LEGEND-200 experiment

In the search for a monochromatic peak as the signature of neutrinoless double beta decay an excellent energy resolution and an ultra-low background around the Q-value of the decay are essential. The LEGEND-200 experiment performs such a search with high-purity germanium detectors enriched in 76 Ge immersed in liquid argon. To determine and monitor the stability of the energy scale and resolution of the germanium diodes, custom-made, low-neutron emission 228 Th sources are regularly deployed in the vicinity of the crystals. Here we describe the production process of the 17 sources available for installation in the experiment, the measurements of their alpha- and gamma- activities, as well as the determination of the neutron emission rates with a low-background LiI(Eu) detector operated deep underground. With a flux of ( 4.27 ± 0.60 stat ± 0.92 syst ) × 10 -4 n / (kBq·s), approximately one order of magnitude below that of commercial sources, the neutron-induced background rate, mainly from the activation of 76 Ge, is negligible compared to other background sources in LEGEND-200.

Astrometric Calibration and Performance of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Focal Plane

Abstract The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, consisting of 5020 robotic fiber positioners and associated systems on the Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak, Arizona, is carrying out a survey to measure the spectra of 40 million galaxies and quasars and produce the largest 3D map of the universe to date. The primary science goal is to use baryon acoustic oscillations to measure the expansion history of the universe and the time evolution of dark energy. A key function of the online control system is to position each fiber on a particular target in the focal plane with an accuracy of 11 μ m rms 2D. This paper describes the set of software programs used to perform this function along with the methods used to validate their performance.

A Causal Approach to Model Validation and Calibration

This poster presents a novel method for validation and verification that focuses on identifying causal relationships between data elements, moving beyond traditional statistical and machine learning approaches. These methods employ causal discovery techniques to reveal the underlying mechanisms of data generation. The research utilizes structural causal models and directed acyclic graphs to depict causal relationships. This approach assists in achieving alignment between simulation models and reality.
