Experimental evidence for beta-decay as a source of chirality by enantiomer analysis

Earlier experiments testing the Vester-Ulbricht beta-decay hypothesis for the origin of molecular chirality are reviewed, followed by descriptions of experiments involving attempted asymmetric radiolysis of DL-amino acids using quantitative gas chromotography as a probe for optical activity. The radiation sources included Sr-90-Y-90, C-14, and P-32 Bremsstrahlen, longitudinally polarized electrons from a linear accelerator and longitudinally polarized protons from a cyclotron. With the possible exception of the linear accelerator irradiations, these experiments failed to produce g.c.-detectable enantiomeric excesses, even at 50-70 percent gross radiolysis. Thus no unambiguous support for the Vester-Ulbricht hypothesis is found in any of the attempted asymmetric radiolyses performed to date. Radioracemization, a possible reason for these failures, is discussed.

Beta decay and the origin of biologial chirality - New experimental results

The hypothetical connection developed by Vester and Ulbricht (1959), between the handedness of beta particles in radioactive decay and the (L) sign of biologial chirality is investigated in a radiolysis experiment. The experiment measured the predicted asymmetry in the formation triplet or 'ortho-' positronium (oPs) in amino acid enantiomers by low energy positrons under conditions of helicity reversal. The positrons were focused on amino acid powder samples. By measuring the time between positron arrival and emission of gamma rays, long-lived oPs were separated from other species. It is found that the asymmetry in leucine (0.8 x 10 to the -4th) is consistent with the theoretical prediction of 10 to the -6th. Neither the experimental limits nor the theoretical estimates are found to rule out a mechanism like that described by Vester and Ulbricht as the cause of the sign of the observed chiral polarization.

Beta-interferon inhibits cell infection by Trypanosoma cruzi

Beta interferon has been shown to inhibit the capacity of bloodstream forms of the flagellate Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease, to associate with and infect mouse peritoneal macrophages and rat heart myoblasts. The inhibitory effect was abrogated in the presence of specific antibodies to the interferon. Pretreatment of the parasites with interferon reduced their infectivity for untreated host cells, whereas pretreament of either type of host cell did not affect the interaction. The effect of interferon on the trypanosomes was reversible; the extent of the inhibitory effect was significantly reduced afer 20 min, and was undetectable after 60 min when macrophages were used as host cells. For the myoblasts, 60 min elapsed before the inhibitory effect began to subside and 120 min elapsed before it became insignificant or undetectable.

High-resolution, far-ultraviolet study of Beta Draconis (G2 Ib-II) - Transition region structure and energy balance

High-resolution far ultraviolet spectra of the star Beta Draconis have been obtained with the IUE satellite. The observations and emission line data from the spectra are presented, the interpretation of the emission line widths and shifts is discussed, and the implications are given in terms of atmospheric properties. The emission measure distribution is derived, and density diagnostics involving both line ratios and line opacity arguments is investigated. The methods for calculating spherically symmetric models of the atmospheric structure are outlined, and several such models are presented. The extension of these models to log T(e) greater than 5.3 using the observed X-ray flux is addressed, the energy balance of an 'optimum' model is investigated, and possible models of energy transport and deposition are discussed.

Beta Silicon Nitride Whiskers

Process for growing fibrous beta silicon nitride helps meet potentially great demand for silicon nitride ceramics. Ceramics have high tensile strength and resistance to thermal shock, which make them attractive choice for high-temperature engine parts. Process forms whiskers of strong, stable, heatresistant material. Whiskers expected to find application as reinforcement in composite silicon nitride ceramic parts. Corklike material useful in present form for thermal barrier tiles. Process forms whiskers of strong, stable, heat-resistant material.

Probe of the Nearby Interstellar Medium by the Vacant Line of Sight to Beta Cma

The line of sight to Beta CM a was probed by Copernicus observations. This particular line of sight is remarkable for the low mean densities. The density was found to be bar N sub H approximately .002/cu cm. Two separate regions were distinguished: (1) A local nearby HI region extends over a few parsecs from the Sun with a density of the order of 0.1/cu cm and a temperature of 11000 to 12500 K; (2) An HII region lies somewhere beyond the HI region and is spread over about 60pc. Its total hydrogen mean density is of the same order as the HI region, i.e., of approximately 0.1 cu cm and it contains only elements in low ionization state. All the ata are coherent with the picture of a cloud in ionization equilibrium at T approximately 23000 deg K.

A study of interdiffusion in beta + gamma/gamma + gamma prime Ni-Cr-Al

Ternary diffusion in the NiCrAl system at 1200 C was studied with beta + gamma/gamma + gamma prime infinite diffusion couples. Interdiffusion resulted in the formation of complex, multiphase diffusion zones. Concentration/distance profiles for Cr and Al in the phases present in the diffusion zone were measured after 200 hr. The Ni-rich portion of the NiCrAl phase diagram (1200 C) was also determined. From these data, bulk Cr and Al profiles were calculated and translated to diffusion paths on the ternary isotherm. Growth layer kinetics of the layers present in the diffusion zone were also measured.

Volcanism and Rift Formation in Beta Regio, Venus: New Radar Results

A high resolution (approximately 2 km) image of Beta Regio, Venus, obtained with the Arecibo radar system, reveals additional details of structure which seem to confirm past suggestions that this region consists of a rift system and associated volcanism. Numerous long linear features approximately parallel to the north-south trending trough discovered by the Pioneer-Venus Orbiter are interpreted as being indicative of extensive faulting and the detail for the radar reflectivity anomaly coincident with Theia Mons suggests that it is a major volcano situated on what would be the western bounding fault of the rift system.

Venus - Volcanism and rift formation in Beta Regio

A new high-resolution radar image of Beta Regio, a Venus highland area, confirms the presence of a major tectonic rift system and associated volcanic activity. The lack of identifiable impact craters, together with the apparent superposition of the Theia Mons volcanic structure on the rift system, suggest that at least some of the volcanic activity occurred in relatively recent geologic time. The presence of topographically similar highland areas elsewhere on Venus (Aphrodite Terra, Dali Chasma, and Diana Chasma) suggests that rifting and volcanism are significant processes on Venus.

Drift wave instabilities in a high beta multispecies plasma

The dispersion relation for drift-Alfven waves in two-component (cold and hot), high beta inhomogeneous multispecies plasma containing protons, oxygen, and sulfur ions is solved numerically. The magnetic field is assumed to have a gradient in simple slab geometry configuration. The plasma ion composition consists of H, O, S, SO2, and Na ions. The effect of heavy ions and multiple charge states on the growth rates has been numerically estimated for assumed ion compositions. The numerical calculations of growth rates also have been performed by using ion composition and plasma parameters based on Voyager spacecraft in the magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn.

New estimates of asymmetric decomposition of racemic mixtures by natural beta-radiation sources

Some recent calculations that appeared to invalidate the Vester-Ulbricht hypothesis, which suggests that the chirality of biological molecules originates from the beta-radiolysis of prebiotic racemic mixtures, are reexamined. These calculations apparently showed that the radiolysis-induced chiral polarization can never exceed the chiral polarization produced by statistical fluctuations. It is here shown that several overly restrictive conditions were imposed on these calculations which, when relaxed, allow the radiolysis-induced polarization to exceed that produced by statistical fluctuations, in accordance with the Vester-Ulbricht hypothesis.

IUE observations of Beta Pictoris - An IRAS candidate for a proto-planetary system

The results of a preliminary analysis of high-resolution and low-resolution UV spectra of the edge-on extended-disk shell star Beta Pic, obtained with the IUE SWP and LWR instruments on November 5-6, 1984, are reported and compared with IRAS and ground-based observations. No selective UV extinction is detected, and the fine structure of the Fe II and C I absorption lines and the presence of metastable Fe II lines are considered consistent with a circumstellar nebula or extended envelope of density greater than 1000/cu cm and electron density (1-10) x 10 to the 8th/cu cm or less at 1-2 AU from the central star. The possibility that the extended orbiting disk is clumpy, as observed by Smith and Terrile (1985), is discussed.

Venus gravity west of Beta Regio

Doppler tracking data from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) have been used to estimate the anomalous gravity field in the region of Venus west of Beta Regio. The analysis invokes a Kalman filter-smoother to solve the nonlinear spacecraft state estimation problem and a linear Bayesian estimator to perform the geophysical inversion. The topographic map for this region, derived from the PVO radar, has been filtered to have the same distortions and degree of smoothing as the gravity map. The undulations of the gravity are about 0.2 times as large as expected from the topography, on the assumption that the latter is uncompensated. A comparison of the gravity and topography by means of the spectral admittance is consistent with Airy compensation at a depth of 50 km, if the surface material has a density of 2.6 g/cu cm. However, this is not a unique interpretation.

Meso-beta scale perturbations of the wind field by thunderstorm cells

Data from the high density storm-scale rawinsonde network of the Severe Environmental Storms and Mesoscale Experiment revealed temporal and spatial changes in the divergence fields of the troposphere in response to severe storm evolution on May 2, 1979; these changes were detectable on the meso-beta scale. This unique set of data was subsequently used to study the evolution of the wind, divergence and vertical motion fields in the presence of intense convection. Mid- and upper-tropospheric divergence was superimposed over low-level convergence. The divergence, which has a maximum value of .0004/s, occurred 75 to 100 km upwind as well as over the tornadic cells. To the south of the storm cells, the kinematic pattern was in reverse, upper level convergence was superimposed over low-level divergence. A vertical motion doublet was found to ascend over the squall line and descend about 70 km south of the squall line. It is suggested that the following effects are accountable for the nature of the kinematic fields: (1) blocking of tropospheric environmental flow by the storm cells, (2) anvil outflows, particularly from the tornadic cells, and (3) divergence from the exit region of the jet stream.

High temperature oxidation of beta-NiAl

The oxidation of single crystal beta-NiAl has been studied primarily using electron microscopy. Oriented metastable Al2O3 phases form during transient oxidation at 800 C. Specific orientation relationships exist on all metal orientations studied and are a result of the small mismatch along aligned close-packed directions in the cation sublattices of the metal and oxide. Transformation of the metastable Al2O3 phases at 1100 C results in an oxide morphology described as the 'lacey' structure of alpha-Al2O3 scales. This structure results from impingement of oriented patches of alpha-Al2O3 as the transformation initiates and moves radially parallel to the surface. Scale growth occurs by diffusion along high angle grain boundaries. A drastic reduction in oxidation rate accompanies the change in oxide morphology.
