Early Stages of Age Hardening in U-6%Nb: An Energy Barrier Hypothesis for Twin Reorientation

It is well known that age hardening occurs in U-6%Nb (Ref. 1-9). Figure 1 shows that increases in hardness occur at aging temperatures up to ~400°C, and overaging occurs above ~450°C. Overaging occurs by cellular decomposition of the αʺ b martensite, similar to overaging reactions in other uranium alloys. But the mechanism of age hardening remains elusive, particularly in its early stages.

Identifying Barriers to Solar and Storage Hybrids: Modeled vs. empirical wholesale market value and net-value for co-located solar + storage projects [Slides]

Large-scale (1MW+) co-located solar and battery storage projects are expanding rapidly in the United States, but their realized contribution to the bulk power system remains poorly understood because public project-level operating data are limited. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates the wholesale market value of 280 operational photovoltaic-plus-storage (PV+S) projects across the seven ISOs/RTOs and 19 additional balancing authorities, representing roughly 95% of the U.S. PV+S fleet in 2024. We model optimized hourly dispatch under energy, capacity, and ancillary-service market opportunities and compare the resulting value with standalone PV value, project-specific levelized cost estimates, and empirical operating or revenue data where available.

Data for Autonomous Transportation Awareness: Data Exchange Use Cases, Standards, and Barriers

This report examines the critical data exchanges between automated vehicle (AV) service providers and the cities and municipalities they serve. It assists municipal authorities in navigating the often complex and real-time digital data exchanges needed to support AV mobility services, with emphasis in three areas: (1) critical safety data for broad-area situational awareness of hazards typically associated emergency dispatch or roadway work zones; (2) performance metrics of AV services that inform the quantity, quality, spatial extents, and impact on the roadway network; and (3) regulatory and policy information, particularly dynamic information that governs how AV services interact with the roadway network, with emphasis on curb space. The report reviews existing practices and emerging protocols and standards and identifies key gaps to address moving forward.

To investigate the reciprocal interactions between dielectric barrier discharges and different biological targets in cell culture medium

The objective of this project was to investigate the dynamic interactions between non-thermal plasma (NTP) and biological targets suspended in a physiological liquid medium. The experiments under this collaborative study were designed to combine theoretical and experimental approaches to test the hypothesis that when living cells (and the growth medium surrounding them) encounter plasma, they reciprocally and dynamically modify each other.

Lowering the computational barrier: Partially Bayesian neural networks for transparency in medical imaging AI

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) can provide clinicians with fast and accurate predictions that are highly valuable for high-stakes medical decision-making, such as in brain tumor segmentation and treatment planning. However, these models largely lack transparency about the uncertainty in their predictions, potentially giving clinicians a false sense of reliability that may lead to grave consequences in patient care. Growing calls for Transparent and Responsible AI have promoted Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) to capture and communicate uncertainty in a systematic and principled manner. However, traditional Bayesian UQ methods remain prohibitively costly for large, million-dimensional tumor segmentation DNNs such as the U-Net. In this work, we discuss a computationally-efficient UQ approach via the partially Bayesian neural networks (pBNN). In pBNN, only a single layer, strategically selected based on gradient-based sensitivity analysis, is targeted for Bayesian inference. We illustrate the effectiveness of pBNN in capturing the full uncertainty for a 7.8-million parameter U-Net. We also demonstrate how practitioners and model developers can use the pBNN's predictions to better understand the model's capabilities and behavior.

Towards an Energy Future with Ubiquitous Electric Vehicles: Barriers and Opportunities

The electrification of personal transportation holds great potential for lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing climate change. The promise of electric vehicles (EVs) to serve these goals has resulted in a broad range of supporting policies aimed at encouraging widespread EV adoption at both the state and federal levels in the United States and around the world. While the EV revolution and prospects of a world with ubiquitous EVs are impacting various industries and many aspects of daily life, strategic interactions between the power grid and EVs are crucial for a successful energy transition. However, managing the interplay between EVs and the power grid remains a challenge. Motivated by that tension, this paper surveys a variety of solutions, policies, and incentives that are focused on effectively managing EV charging behaviors. The paper’s objective is to explore these tools to ensure that EV owners have ultimate control over their personal vehicles while simultaneously allowing the power grid to mitigate adverse network impacts. Furthermore, this paper examines the role of charging infrastructure technology and its strategic placement in facilitating the seamless integration of EVs into the grid. Additionally, the paper highlights financial mechanisms associated with EV integration and discusses the consequences of these mechanisms.

SOFC interconnect barriers and methods of making same using masks

A novel method to produce thin films spatially disposed on desired areas of workpieces is disclosed. Examples of include the formation of a yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) film formed on a desired portion of a stainless steel interconnect for solid oxide fuel cells by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). A number of methods to produce the spatially disposed YSZ film structures are described including polymeric and silicone rubber masks. The thin film structures have utility for preventing the reaction of glasses with metals, in particular alkali-earth containing glasses with ferritic stainless steels, allowing high temperature bonding of these materials.
