Higher Order Mode Coupling in Feed Waveguide of a Planar Slot Array Antenna

A simple technique was developed to account for the higher order mode coupling between adjacent coupling slots in the feed waveguide of a planar slot array. The method uses an equation relating the slot impedance to the slot voltage and a reaction integral involving the equivalent magnetic current of the slot aperture and the magnetic field coupled from an adjacent slot. In the proposed method, one uses the Elliott s design technique to determine tilt angles and lengths of the coupling slots. The radiating slots are modeled as shunt admittances, and the coupling slots are modeled as series impedances.

Strut Shaping of 34m Beam Waveguide Antenna for Reductions in Near-Field RF and Noise Temperature

Strut shaping of NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) 34m Beam Waveguide (BWG) antenna has been implemented to reduce near-field RF exposure while improving the antenna noise temperature. Strut shaping was achieved by introducing an RF shield that does not compromise the structural integrity of the existing antenna. Reduction in the RF near-field level will compensate for the planned transmit power increase of the antenna from 20 kW to 80 kW while satisfying safety requirements for RF exposure. Measured antenna noise temperature was also improved by as much as 1.5 K for the low elevation angles and 0.5 K in other areas.

Fabrication of Silicon Backshort Assembly for Waveguide-Coupled Superconducting Detectors

The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) is a ground-based instrument that will measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background to search for gravitational waves from a posited epoch of inflation early in the universe s history. We are currently developing detectors that address the challenges of this measurement by combining the excellent beam-forming attributes of feedhorns with the low-noise performance of Transition-Edge sensors. These detectors utilize a planar orthomode transducer that maps the horizontal and vertical linear polarized components in a dual-mode waveguide to separate microstrip lines. On-chip filters define the bandpass in each channel, and the signals are terminated in resistors that are thermally coupled to the transition-edge sensors operating at 150 mK.

Characteristics of the Single-Longitudinal-Mode Planar-Waveguide External Cavity Diode Laser at 1064 nm

We describe the characteristics of the planar-waveguide external cavity diode laser (PW-ECL). To the best of our knowledge, it is the first butterfly-packaged 1064-nm semiconductor laser that is stable enough to be locked to an external frequency reference. We evaluated its performance from the viewpoint of precision experiments. Especially, using a hyperfine absorption line of iodine, we suppressed its frequency noise by a factor of up to104 at 10 mHz. The PW-ECLs compactness and low cost make it a candidate to replace traditional Nd:YAGnon-planar ring oscillators and fiber lasers in applications which require a single longitudinal-mode.

Antenna noise temperature was also improved by as much as 1.5 K for the low elevation angles and 0.5 K in other areas. Both reductions of RF near-field exposure and antenna noise temperature were verified through measurements and agree very well with calculated results.

Multi-Step Ka/Ka Dichroic Plate with Rounded Corners for NASA's 34m Beam Waveguide Antenna

A multi-step Ka/Ka dichroic plate Frequency Selective Surface (FSS structure) is designed, manufactured and tested for use in NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) 34m Beam Waveguide (BWG) antennas. The proposed design allows ease of manufacturing and ability to handle the increased transmit power (reflected off the FSS) of the DSN BWG antennas from 20kW to 100 kW. The dichroic is designed using HFSS and results agree well with measured data considering the manufacturing tolerances that could be achieved on the dichroic.

Fabrication and Performance of Planar Schottky Diodes with T-gate-like Anodes in 200 GHz Subharmonically-Pumped Waveguide Mixers

A T-gate-like structure has been developed, fabricated and tested as the anode for millimeter and submillimeter-wave Schottky diodes. The low parasitics of the T-anode diodes yield extremely high cutoff frequencies, making the diodes useable at frequencies well beyond 1 THz. The diodes were tested as an antiparallel-pair, integrated monolithically with microstrip circuitry on a quartz substrate, in a subharmonically pumped waveguide mixer. A double sideband noise temperature of 600 K with a conversion loss of 4.7 dB were measured at 200 GHz. This is believed to be the lowest noise temperature ever reported for a room temperature subharmonically-pumped Schottky diode mixer at this frequency.

A Hybrid Finite Element Method for Axisymmetric Waveguide fed Horns

A new method for finding radiation patterns and the reflection coefficients associated with an axisymmetric waveguide fed horn is presented. The approach is based on a hybrid finite element method (FEM) wherein the electromagnetic fields in the FEM region are coupled to the fields outside by two surface integral equations. Because of the local nature of the FEM, this formalism allows for the presence of inhomogeneities to be included in the problem domain. The matrix equation which results from the application of this method is shown to be complex-symmetric. It is, furthermore, diagonally dominant and sparse. Comparisons of calculated and measured data for two different horns show good agreement.

Integrated Back-to-Back Barrier-N-N + Varactor Diode Tripler Using a Split-waveguide Block

The back-to-back barrier-N-N + (bbBNN) varactor is a nonlinear device being developed for frequency multiplier applications above 100 GHz. Its symmetrical C-V characteristic, low series resistance and suitability to planarization make it ideal choice for high frequency, low power, odd harmonic generation. In this paper, development of an integrated planar multiplier device and its performance as a 220 GHz tripler is presented. A new split-waveguide block design has been used to provide the proper embedding impedances to the device. The performance over 200-240 GHz has been measured and the integrated bbBNN device is shown to provide as much as 734 microwatts output power. A flange-to-flange tripling efficiency of 7% has been obtained. This is believed to be the highest conversion efficiency yet reported for all planar tripler at this frequency. The performance is expected to be improved further with minor changes to the device and circuit parameters.

Beam-Waveguide Antenna Servo Design Issues for Tracking Low-Earth-Orbiting Satellites

The upcoming NASA missions will require tracking of low-orbit satellites. As a consequence, NASA antennas will be required to track satellites at higher rates than for the current deep space missions. This paper investigates servo design issues for the 34-m beam-waveguide (BWG) antennas that track low-orbit satellites. This includes the upgrade of the servo with the feedforward loop, monopulse controller design, and tracking error reduction through proper choice of elevation pinion location, through application of a notch filter, and through the elevation drive amplifier gain adjustment. Finally, improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio through averaging of the oversampled monopulse signal is presented.
