Selective video blanking technique

Adverse viewing effects caused by faulty photosensitive elements are eliminated. A linear maximal /or nonmaximal/ sequence generator gives a pseudorandom pulse train to selectively blank the display monitor during specified mosaic interrogation times. The outputs minimize the length of the required shift register generator.

Advanced study of video signal processing in low signal to noise environments

A generalized mathematical and computer model of the revised Apollo television system was developed and used to determine spectral compatibility with the overall Apollo communication system. In particular the effects of the change to commercial television format from slow-scan black and white on the principal telemetering subcarriers was analyzed. Experimental data was obtained from MSC telemetry division confirming the analytical results.

A real time programmable data compression system for video data.

Description of the implementation of a data compression system for the real-time operational transmission (through microwave links) of ATS satellite pictures between the command and data acquisition station and a central location for computer processing. The system features the use of general-purpose minicomputers for encoding and decoding; this makes it possible to vary the employed data compression technique and to make simultaneous statistical calculations on the data. Data compression and expansion is accomplished in a manner that does not lower data quality.

Video enhancement of X-ray and neutron radiographs

System was devised for displaying radiographs on television screen and enhancing fine detail in picture. System uses analog-computer circuits to process television signal from low-noise television camera. Enhanced images are displayed in black and white and can be controlled to vary degree of enhancement and magnification of details in either radiographic transparencies or opaque photographs.

Advanced study of video signal processing in low signal to noise environments

A nonlinear analysis of a multifilter phase-lockloop (MPLL) by using the method of harmonic balance is presented. The particular MPLL considered has a low-pass filter and a band-pass filter in parallel. An analytic expression for the relationship between the input signal phase deviation and the phase error is determined for sinusoidal FM in the absence of noise. The expression is used to determine bounds on the proper operating region for the MPLL and to investigate the jump phenomenon previously observed. From these results the proper modulation index, modulating frequency, etc. used for the design of a MPLL are determined. Data for the loop unlock boundary obtained from the theoretical expression are compared to data obtained from analog computer simulations of the MPLL.

A zero-error operational video data compression system

A data compression system has been operating since February 1972, using ATS spin-scan cloud cover data. With the launch of ITOS 3 in October 1972, this data compression system has become the only source of near-realtime very high resolution radiometer image data at the data processing facility. The VHRR image data are compressed and transmitted over a 50 kilobit per second wideband ground link. The goal of the data compression experiment was to send data quantized to six bits at twice the rate possible when no compression is used, while maintaining zero error between the transmitted and reconstructed data. All objectives of the data compression experiment were met, and thus a capability of doubling the data throughput of the system has been achieved.
