Syntheses and Degradations of Fluorinated Heterocyclics: Perfluoroalkyl and Perfluoroalkylether-1,3,4-Oxadiazoles - 3

2,5-Bis(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-, 2-perfluoroalkylether-5-perfluoro-n- heptyl- , and 2 , 5-bisperfluoroalkylether-1,3,4-oxadiazoles were synthesized and characterized. 2,5-Bis(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole was thermally and hydrolytically stable at 325 C; however, in the presence of air, degradation took place at 235 C. The perfluoroalkylether analogue exhibited thermal and hydrolytic stability at 325 C; it was found to be unaffected by jet-A fuel and air at 235 C. At 325 C in air some degradation occurred as evidenced by volatiles production, oxygen consumption, and 96% starting material recovery.

Method to Prepare Processable Polyimides with Non-Reactive Endgroups Using 1,3-bis(3-Aminophenoxy) Benzene

Polyimide copolymers were obtained containing 1,3-bis(3-aminophenoxy)benzene (APB) and other diamines and dianhydrides and terminating with the appropriate amount of a non-reactive endcapper, such as phthalic anhydride. Homopolymers containing only other diamines and dianhydrides which are not processable under conditions described previously can be made processable by incorporating various amounts of APB, depending on the chemical structures of the diamines and dianhydrides used. Polyimides that are more rigid in nature require more APB to impart processability than polyimides that are less rigid in nature. The copolymers that result from using APB to enhance processability have a unique combination of properties including excellent thin film properties, low pressure processing (200 psi and below), improved toughness, improved solvent resistance, improved adhesive properties, improved composite mechanical properties, long term melt stability (several hours at 390 C), and lower melt viscosities.

The Effect of High Solidity on Propeller Characteristics at High Forward Speeds from Wind-Tunnel Tests of the NACA 4-(3)(06.3)-06 and NACA 4-(3)(06.4)-09 Two-Blade Propellers

Tests of two-blade propellers having the NACA 4-(3)(06.3)-06 and NACA 4-(3)(06.4)-09 blade designs (blade activity factors of 179 and 263, respectively) have been made in the Langley 8-foot high-speed tunnel through a range of blade angle from 20 degrees to 70 degrees for free-stream Mach numbers from 0.165 to 0.725 to determine the effects of high solidity and compressibility on propeller characteristics. The tests are part of a general investigation of propellers at high forward speeds. Results previously reported for similar tests of two-blade propellers having the NACA 4-308-03 and NACA 4-308-045 blade designs (blade activity factors of 87 and 133, respectively) are included for comparison. The results showed that the 0.06- and 0.09-solidity blades, although producing efficiencies of the order of 90 percent, were less efficient than blades of conventional solidity. The variation in average blade lift coefficient with solidity at a constant blade angle and advance-diameter ratio through the speed range of these tests was found to be analogous to the variation of wing lift coefficient with aspect ratio, indicating that high-solidity blades may be desirable at very high speeds. Because of power limitations of the test equipment, conclusive evidence of the possible favorable effects of increased blade solidity at high speeds was not obtained. Further tests are desirable.

Correlation of the Lattice Distortion and Polaron Conduction with the Physical Properties of La (sub 0.7)Ca(sub 0.3)MnO(sub 3) and La(sub 0.5)Ca(sub 0.5)CoO(sub 3) Epitaxial Films

The effects of lattice distortion on the physical properties of La (sub 0.7)Ca(sub 0.3)MnO(sub 3) and La(sub 0.5)Ca(sub 0.5)CoO(sub 3) films are investigated. Our results suggest that larger substrate-induced lattice distortion gives rise to larger zero-field resistivity and larger negative magnetoresistance.

Vibrational Frequencies and Spectroscopic Constants for 1(sup 3)A' HNC and 1(sup 3)A' HOC+ from High-Accuracy Quartic Force Fields

The spectroscopic constants and vibrational frequencies for the 1(sup 3)A' states of HNC, DNC, HOC+, and DOC+ are computed and discussed in this work. The reliable CcCR quartic force field based on high-level coupled cluster ab initio quantum chemical computations is exclusively utilized to provide the anharmonic potential. Then, second order vibrational perturbation theory and vibrational configuration interaction methods are employed to treat the nuclear Schroedinger equation. Second-order perturbation theory is also employed to provide spectroscopic data for all molecules examined. The relationship between these molecules and the corresponding 1(sup 3)A' HCN and HCO+ isomers is further developed here. These data are applicable to laboratory studies involving formation of HNC and HOC+ as well as astronomical observations of chemically active astrophysical environments.

Status of the 3-MDCP, the 3-D Woven TPS enabling MSR Earth Entry System Development

While the HEEET project established the dual-layer, 3-D Woven TPS at TRL 6 for extreme entry environment missions such as Saturn and Ice-Giant Probe missions, subsequent to the completion of HEEET project in 2018, further development was undertaken to assess the viability of a variant of the 3-D Woven, a single, insulating layer alone as a viable TPS for Mars Sample Return mission. MSR Earth Entry System (EES) baselined it and named the TPS as 3D, mid-density, carbon-phenolic (3MDCP). MSR program invested in building a new loom and the weaver T.E.A.M. Inc is currently weaving 80” wide 1.2” thick insulating layer. Unlike HEEET, where a set of tiles and seams are integrated to form the heat-shield, 3MDCP is a seamless heatshield by wrapping and shaping a flat panel into the heatshield shape and then rigidizing the preform through resin infusion. MSR EES is investing in technology maturation of 3MDCP for the current mission launch in 2027. This lighting talk will provide key developments and time line for 3MDCP technology maturation to show that 3MDCP will be ready to support future UOP or Saturn Probe mission. In addition, the limitations of the capability will be presented so that Saturn mission proposers as well as UOP flagship mission study can be fully informed as to the 3MDCP capability.

Hard x-ray standing-wave photoemission study of the interfaces in a BiFeO$_3$/La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ superlattice

Hybrid multiferroics such as BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) and La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) heterostructures are highly interesting functional systems due to their complex electronic and magnetic properties. One of the key parameters influencing the emergent properties is the quality of interfaces, where varying interdiffusion lengths can give rise to different chemistry and distinctive electronic states. Here we report high-resolution depth resolved chemical and electronic investigation of BFO/LSMO superlattice using standing-wave hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy in the first-order Bragg as well as near-total-reflection geometry. Our results show that the interfaces of BFO on top of LSMO are atomically abrupt, while the LSMO on top of BFO interfaces show an interdiffusion length of around 1.2 unit cells. The two interfaces also exhibit different chemical gradients, with the BFO/LSMO interface being Sr-terminated by a spectroscopically distinctive high binding energy component in Sr 2p core-level spectra, which is spatially contained within 1 unit cell from the interface. From the electronic point of view, unique valence band features were observed for bulk-BFO, bulk-LSMO and their interfaces. Our X-ray optical analysis revealed a unique electronic signature at the BFO/LSMO interface, which we attribute to the coupling between those respective layers. Valence band decomposition based on the Bragg-reflection standing-wave measurement also revealed the band alignment between BFO and LSMO layers. Our work demonstrates that standing-wave hard x-ray photoemission is a reliable non-destructive technique for probing depth-resolved electronic structure of buried layers and interfaces with sub-unit-cell resolution. Equivalent investigations can be successfully applied to a broad class of material such as perovskite complex oxides with emergent interfacial phenomena.

Acetogenic production of 3-Hydroxybutyrate using a native 3-Hydroxybutyryl-CoA Dehydrogenase

3-Hydroxybutyrate (3HB) is a product of interest as it is a precursor to the commercially produced bioplastic polyhydroxybutyrate. It can also serve as a platform for fine chemicals, medicines, and biofuels, making it a value-added product and feedstock. Acetogens non-photosynthetically fix CO 2 into acetyl-CoA and have been previously engineered to convert acetyl-CoA into 3HB. However, as acetogen metabolism is poorly understood, those engineering efforts have had varying levels of success. 3HB, using acetyl-CoA as a precursor, can be synthesized by a variety of different pathways. Here we systematically compare various pathways to produce 3HB in acetogens and discover a native ( S )-3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase, hbd2 , responsible for endogenous 3HB production. In conjunction with the heterologous thiolase atoB and CoA transferase ctfAB , hbd2 overexpression improves yields of 3HB on both sugar and syngas (CO/H 2 /CO 2 ), outperforming the other tested pathways. These results uncovered a previously unknown 3HB production pathway, inform data from prior metabolic engineering efforts, and have implications for future physiological and biotechnological anaerobic research.

The Influence of Ozone: Superstoichiometric Oxygen in Atomic Layer Deposition of Fe 2 O 3 Using tert -Butylferrocene and O 3

Understanding the chemical mechanisms at play in atomic layer deposition (ALD) is critical for effective process development and expansion of ALD into more complex classes of materials. In this work, a mechanistic study of iron oxide deposited by ALD using tert-butylferrocene and ozone as reactants is performed. Iron oxide ALD using ozone is a useful model system for mechanistic studies due to the prevalence of ozone-based ALD processes and the uses of iron oxide in ternary and quaternary metal oxides. Results show that saturation conditions require significantly greater exposures of both reactants than is typically reported in the literature, and growths per cycle of greater than one monolayer of Fe 2 O 3 per cycle are observed and explained. A growth mechanism is proposed whereby increased ozone exposure results in uptake of superstoichiometric oxygen into the film. X-ray characterizations reveal the presence of excess oxygen stored near the surface of films deposited with larger ozone exposures and show that increased ozone exposures cause crystalline domain rearrangement and conversion of the film from the γ-maghemite phase to the α-hematite phase. The mechanism described here has implications for the wider class of ozone-based ALD processes, and potential applications of this growth phenomenon are discussed.

Effect of redox promoters (CeO x and CuO x ) and surface sulfates on the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH 3 by supported V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 catalysts

A series of TiO 2 -supported MO x catalysts (M=V, W, Ce, Cu and S) were investigated for their SCR activity. In situ Raman spectroscopy indicated that the supported MO x phases were completely dispersed as surface sites on the TiO 2 support. In situ IR revealed that surface VO x , WO x and SO x sites anchored at both CeO x /CuO x and TiO 2 sites. The number of surface Lewis acid sites decreased with the addition of basic (CeO x /CuO x ) and acidic (VO x /WO x ) sites in all catalysts, and acidic SO x in the unpromoted and Ce-promoted catalysts. The surface VO x , WO x and SO x sites introduced surface Brønsted acid sites. The redox promoters increased the NO conversion, but SO x impregnation inhibited their effect due to acid (SO x )-base (CeO x /CuO x ) interactions. Finally, the SCR reaction was shown to efficiently proceed via either surface NH 3 * or NH 4 +* species, resolving the long-standing dispute on the involvement of these species in the SCR reaction.

177 Lu and 227 Th Labeled 3,4,3-(LI-1,2-HOPO): characterization, optimized synthesis, biological distribution and dosimetry

Objectives: Interest in targeted radionuclide therapy has greatly increased namely due to the FDA approval of radiotherapeutic drugs such as Lutathera The identification of chelators that can bind diag- nostic and therapeutic radionuclides would allow facile development of agents tailored for personalized medicine. Hydroxypyridinonate (HOPO) derivatives have been demonstrated as effective decorpo- ration agents for actinides owing to their hard oxygen donor atoms and strong complexation. Utilizing these molecules as chelators for potential nuclear medicine agents should allow for radiometals to be effectively sequestered by the ligand. The aim of this work was to evaluate the in vivo stability of 3-4-3-(LI-1,2-HOPO) (HOPO for short) with 177 Lu and 227 Th as potential beta- and alpha-emitting radiothera- peutic complexes, respectively.
