Definition of fragmentation functions and the violation of sum rules

We point out a problem with the formulation and derivations of sum rules for quark fragmentation functions that impacts their validity in QCD, but which potentially points toward an improved understanding of final states in inclusive hard processes. Fragmentation functions give the distribution of final-state hadrons arising from a parton exiting a hard scattering, and the sum rules for momentum, electric charge, etc. express conservation of these quantities. The problem arises from a mismatch between the quark quantum numbers of the initial quark and the fact that all observed final-state hadrons are confined bound states with color zero. We point that, in a confining theory like QCD, the Wilson line in the operator definition of a fragmentation function entails that the final state in a fragmentation function includes a bound state in the external field generated by the Wilson line. We justify this with the aid of general features of string hadronization. The anomalous bound states are restricted to fractional momentum z = 0 . They tend to invalidate sum rules like the one for charge conservation when applied to the fragmentation functions inferred from experimental data but not the momentum sum rule. We propose to exploit our ideas in future studies as a way to relate the fragmentation functions extracted from inclusive cross sections to more detailed nonperturbative descriptions of final state hadronization. We also describe scenarios wherein the traditional sum rules might remain approximately valid with a reasonably high degree of accuracy. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Natural anomaly mediation from the landscape with implications for LHC SUSY searches

Supersymmetric models with the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking (AMSB) form for soft SUSY breaking terms arise in two different settings: (1) extra-dimensional models where SUSY breaking occurs in a sequestered sector, and (2) 4 − d models with dynamical SUSY breaking in a hidden sector where scalars gain masses of order the gravitino mass m 3 / 2 , but gaugino masses and trilinear soft terms are assumed to be of the AMSB form. Both models run into serious conflicts with (1) LHC sparticle and Higgs mass constraints, (2) constraints from winolike weakly interacting massive particle dark matter searches, and (3) bounds from naturalness. These conflicts may be avoided by introducing minor changes to the underlying phenomenological models consisting of nonuniversal bulk scalar Higgs masses and A terms, providing a setting for natural anomaly mediation (nAMSB). In nAMSB, the wino is still expected to be the lightest of the gauginos, but the Higgsinos are expected to be the lightest electroweakinos (EWinos) in accord with naturalness. We examine what sorts of spectra are expected to emerge when nAMSB arises from a string landscape setting: While model 2 can only be natural for a Higgs mass m h ≲ 123 GeV , model 1 can accommodate naturalness along with m h ∼ 125 GeV while still respecting LHC bounds on sparticle masses. We explore the LHC phenomenology of nAMSB models where we find that for Higgsino pair production, typically larger dilepton mass gaps arise from the soft dilepton-plus-jets signature than in models with gaugino mass unification. For wino-pair production, the higher m 3 / 2 portion of nAMSB parameter space is excluded by recent LHC bounds from gaugino pair production searches. We characterize the dominant LHC signatures arising from the remaining lower m 3 / 2 ∼ 90 – 200 TeV range of parameter space, which should be fully testable at high-luminosity LHC via EWino pair production searches. Toward distinguishing Dirac from Majorana neutrino mass with gravitational waves

We propose a new method toward distinguishing the Dirac versus Majorana nature of neutrino masses from the spectrum of gravitational waves (GWs) associated with neutrino mass genesis. Motivated by the principle of generating small neutrino masses without tiny Yukawa couplings, we assume generic seesaw mechanisms for both Majorana and Dirac neutrino masses. For Majorana neutrinos, we further assume a spontaneously broken gauged U ( 1 ) B − L symmetry, independently of the type of Majorana seesaw mechanism, which gives a cosmic string induced GW signal flat over a wide range of frequencies. For Dirac neutrinos, we assume the spontaneous breaking of a Z 2 symmetry, the minimal symmetry choice associated with all Dirac seesaw mechanisms, which is softly broken, generating a peaked GW spectrum from the annihilation of the resulting domain walls. In fact, the GW spectra for all types of Dirac seesaws with such a broken Z 2 symmetry are identical, subject to a mild caveat. As an illustrative example, we study the simplest respective type-I seesaw mechanisms, and show that the striking difference in the shapes of the GW spectra can help differentiate between these Dirac and Majorana seesaws, complementing results of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. We also discuss detailed implications of the recent NANOGrav data for Majorana and Dirac seesaw models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Holographic odderon at TOTEM?

We consider the contribution of the Odderon to diffractive p p and p p ¯ elastic scattering at large center of mass energy. We identify the Odderon and Pomeron with the Reggeized 1 ± − and 2 + + glueballs in the bulk, respectively. We use for the gravity dual description the repulsive wall model, to account for the proper Gribov diffusion for off-forward scattering. The eikonalized and unitarized amplitudes exhibit a vanishingly small rho-parameter, and a slope parameter fixed by twice the closed string slope. The results for the differential and total cross sections are compared to the empirical results reported recently by the TOTEM collaboration. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Connecting flux vacua through scalar field excursions

We show how flux vacua that differ from each other in flux quanta can be seen as different vacua in a single scalar potential of an enlarged field space, which resolves the separation by thin domain walls. This observation, which is motivated by the anti–de Sitter distance conjecture, allows one to compute distances between different vacua using the usual field-space metric. We verify for explicit examples such as scale-separated IIA flux vacua and the IIB Freund-Rubin vacua that the distance conjecture (for scalar fields) is satisfied and that the asymptotic directions in the enlarged field space are indeed hyperbolic. This enlarged field space contains the tachyon fields on the unstable D ˜ p -branes of type II string theory, which can induce the brane charges of the stable D-branes. We suggest that requiring continuous interpolations refines the cobordism conjecture and postdicts the existence of unstable D ˜ p -branes. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of the fraction of jet longitudinal momentum carried by Λ c + baryons in p p collisions

Recent measurements of charm-baryon production in hadronic collisions have questioned the universality of charm-quark fragmentation across different collision systems. In this work the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is probed, by presenting the first measurement of the longitudinal jet momentum fraction carried by Λ c + baryons, z ∥ ch , in hadronic collisions. The results are obtained in proton-proton ( p p ) collisions at s = 13 TeV at the LHC, with Λ c + baryons and charged (track-based) jets reconstructed in the transverse momentum intervals of 3 ≤ p T Λ c + < 15 GeV / c and 7 ≤ p T jet ch < 15 GeV / c , respectively. The z ∥ ch distribution is compared to a measurement of D 0 -tagged charged jets in p p collisions as well as to 8 simulations. The data hints that the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is softer with respect to charm mesons, in the measured kinematic interval, as predicted by hadronization models which include color correlations beyond leading-color in the string formation. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Universal construction of black hole microstates

We refine and extend a recent construction of sets of black hole microstates with semiclassical interiors that span a Hilbert space of dimension e S , where S is the black hole entropy. We elaborate on the definition and properties of microstates in statistical and black hole mechanics. The gravitational description of microstates employs matter shells in the interior of the black hole, and we argue that in the limit where the shells are very heavy, the construction acquires universal validity. To this end, we show it for very wide classes of black holes; we first extend the construction to rotating and charged black holes, including extremal and near-extremal solutions, with or without supersymmetry, and we sketch how the construction of microstates can be embedded in string theory. We then describe how the approach can include general quantum corrections, near or far from extremality. For supersymmetric black holes, the microstates we construct differ from other recent constructions in that the interior excitations are not confined within the near-extremal throat. Treelike structure of symmetry topological field theories and multisector QFTs

The global symmetries of a D -dimensional quantum field theory (QFT) can, in many cases, be captured in terms of a ( D + 1 )-dimensional symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). In this work we construct a ( D + 1 )-dimensional theory which governs the symmetries of QFTs with multiple sectors which have connected correlators that admit a decoupling limit. The associated symmetry field theory decomposes into a SymTree, namely a treelike structure of SymTFTs fused along possibly nontopological junctions. In string-realized multisector QFTs, these junctions are smoothed out in the extradimensional geometry, as we demonstrate in examples. We further use this perspective to study the fate of higher-form symmetries in the context of holographic large M averaging where the topological sectors of different large M replicas become dressed by additional extended operators associated with the SymTree. Why quarkonium hybrid coupling to two $S$-wave heavy-light mesons is not suppressed

We examine the couplings of quarkonium hybrids to heavy-light meson pairs in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for QCD. The lowest hybrid multiplets consist of bound states of the Π u and Σ$^{-}_{u}$ potentials. We find that the Σ$^{-}_{u}$ potential can couple to pairs of S-wave mesons through string breaking, while the Π u potential cannot. From this observation, we derive model-independent selection rules that contradict previous expectations that quarkonium hybrids are forbidden to decay into pairs of S-wave mesons. These Born-Oppenheimer selection rules are consistent with the partial decay widths of the lowest charmonium hybrid with exotic quantum numbers J PC = 1 -+ recently calculated using lattice QCD.

Higher spin mode stability for STU black hole backgrounds

This article studies mode stability of a four-dimensional rotating black hole with four pairwise equal U(1) charges derived in the framework of supergravity or the low energy string theory which is known now as STU black hole. We investigate bosonic perturbations in a proposed equation of the Teukolsky type for probe fields of different spins through the transformation technique devised by Whiting in 1989. Lastly, we introduce connection relations inspired by the work of Duztaş to prove the absence of unstable modes that solve the torsion-modified Dirac equation appropriate for this black hole background.

Born-Oppenheimer potentials for $SU$(3) gauge theory

We develop parametrizations of eight of the lowest Born-Oppenheimer potentials for quarkonium hybrid mesons as functions of the separation r of the static quark and antiquark sources. The parameters are determined by fitting results calculated using pure SU⁡(3) lattice gauge theory. The parametrizations have the correct limiting behavior at small r, where the potentials form multiplets associated with gluelumps. They have the correct limiting behavior at large r, where the potentials form multiplets associated with excitations of a relativistic string. There is a narrow avoided crossing in the small-r region between two potentials with the same Born-Oppenheimer quantum numbers.

Waiting for inflation: A new initial state for the Universe

We propose a cosmological lingering phase for the initial state prior to inflation which would help address the singularity problem of inflation. The Universe begins with a constant (Hagedorn) temperature and then transitions into an inflationary universe while preserving the null energy condition (NEC). We first consider the phase space of positive spatial curvature models within general relativity and with matter sources that respect the NEC. Depending on the duration of the postlingering inflation, these models can produce a small amount of observable spatial curvature in the cosmic microwave background. We also discuss how lingering can arise with or without spatial curvature in theories of quantum gravity when considering the thermodynamic scaling of particles and its impact on the early Universe. The string theory dilaton is essential to the dynamics. There are many open questions that remain. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Universal rapidity scaling of entanglement entropy inside hadrons from conformal invariance

When a hadron is probed at high energy, a nontrivial quantum entanglement entropy inside the hadron emerges due to the lack of complete information about the hadron wave function extracted from this measurement. In the high-energy limit, the hadron becomes a maximally entangled state, with a linear dependence of entanglement entropy on rapidity, as has been found in a recent analysis based on parton description. In this paper, we use an effective conformal field theoretic description of hadrons on the light cone to show that the linear dependence of the entanglement entropy on rapidity found in parton description is a general consequence of approximate conformal invariance and does not depend on the assumption of weak coupling. Our result also provides further evidence for a duality between the parton and string descriptions of hadrons. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Nonperturbative resolution of strong coupling singularities in 4D 𝒩 = 1 heterotic M-theory

We investigate the interior of the moduli space of four-dimensional 𝒩 = 1 theories of gravity arising from compactifications of the 𝐸 8 × 𝐸 8 heterotic string on Calabi-Yau threefolds. By studying the threshold corrections to the coupling of the heterotic gauge groups, we infer the existence of a strong coupling singularity for one of the perturbative heterotic gauge groups, which effectively yields an additional finite distance boundary of the classical scalar field space. In heterotic M-theory, this boundary maps to a domain wall solution for which the gauge coupling and the warp factor on one of the Horava-Witten 9-branes diverge, thus highlighting the gravitational origin of the classical strong coupling singularity. The divergence of the warp factor is, however, regulated once nonperturbative effects are taken into account, as we demonstrate by studying the instanton corrections to the 5D BPS domain wall equations. This regularization implies that the classical strong coupling boundary of the scalar field 4D 𝒩 = 1 heterotic M-theory is resolved, indicating that, at the quantum level, the field space can be extended beyond this classical boundary.

New nonrenormalization theorem from UV/IR mixing

In this paper, we prove a new nonrenormalization theorem which arises from UV/IR mixing. This theorem and its corollaries are relevant for all four-dimensional perturbative tachyon-free closed string theories which can be realized from higher-dimensional theories via geometric compactifications. As such, our theorem therefore holds regardless of the presence or absence of spacetime supersymmetry and regardless of the gauge symmetries or matter content involved. This theorem resolves a hidden clash between modular invariance and the process of decompactification, and enables us to uncover a number of surprising phenomenological properties of these theories. Chief among these is the fact that certain physical quantities within such theories cannot exhibit logarithmic or power-law running and instead enter an effective fixed-point regime above the compactification scale. This cessation of running occurs as the result of the UV/IR mixing inherent in the theory. These effects apply not only for gauge couplings but also for the Higgs mass and other quantities of phenomenological interest, thereby eliminating the logarithmic and/or power-law running that might have otherwise appeared for such quantities. These results illustrate the power of UV/IR mixing to tame divergences—even without supersymmetry—and reinforce the notion that UV/IR mixing may play a vital role in resolving hierarchy problems without supersymmetry. Particle production as a function of charged-particle flattenicity in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

This paper reports the first measurement of the transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) spectra of primary charged pions, kaons, (anti)protons, and unidentified particles as a function of the charged-particle flattenicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV. Flattenicity is a novel event shape observable that is measured in the pseudorapidity intervals covered by the V0 detector, 2.8 < 𝜂 < 5.1 and −3.7 < 𝜂 < −1.7. According to QCD-inspired phenomenological models, it shows sensitivity to multiparton interactions and is less affected by biases toward larger 𝑝 T due to local multiplicity fluctuations in the V0 acceptance than multiplicity. The analysis is performed in minimum-bias (MB) as well as in high-multiplicity events up to 𝑝 T = 20 GeV/⁢𝑐. The event selection requires at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval |𝜂| < 1. The measured 𝑝 T distributions, average 𝑝 T , kaon-to-pion and proton-to-pion particle ratios, presented in this paper, are compared to model calculations using pythia 8 based on color strings and EPOS LHC. The modification of the 𝑝 T -spectral shapes in low-flattenicity events that have large event activity with respect to those measured in MB events develops a pronounced peak at intermediate 𝑝 T (2 < 𝑝 T < 8 GeV/𝑐), and approaches the vicinity of unity at higher 𝑝 T . The results are qualitatively described by pythia, and they show different behavior than those measured as a function of charged-particle multiplicity based on the V0M estimator.

Frozen generalized symmetries

M-theory frozen singularities are (locally) D - or E -type orbifold singularities with a background fractional C 3 -monodromy surrounding them. In this paper, we revisit such backgrounds and address several puzzling features of their physics. We first give a top-down derivation of how the D - or E -type 7D N = 1 gauge theory directly “freezes” to a lower-rank gauge theory due to the C 3 background. This relies on a Hanany-Witten effect of fractional M5 branes and the presence of a gauge anomaly of fractional D p probes in the circle reduction. Additionally, we compute defect groups and 8D symmetry topological field theories of the 7D frozen theories in several duality frames. We apply our results to understanding the evenness condition of strings ending on O 7 + planes, and calculating the global forms of supergravity gauge groups of M-theory compactified on T 4 / Γ with frozen singularities. We also revisit IIA A D E singularities with a C 1 -monodromy along a 1-cycle in the boundary lens space and show that this freezes the gauge degrees of freedom via confinement. Bridging hadronic and vacuum structure by heavy quarkonia

We discuss the central and, mostly, spin-dependent potentials in heavy quarkonia $\overline{b}$$b$,$\overline{c}$$c$, with two goals in mind. The first is phenomenological: using the splitting between the 1S and 2S pairs, as well as the 1P and 2P quartet masses, we obtain pertinent matrix elements of all these potentials. The second is theoretical: using standard wave functions, we compute these matrix elements, quantifying the perturbative, nonperturbative and “string” contributions. The model for nonperturbative effects is a “dense instanton liquid model,” in which the QCD vacuum is made mostly of (strongly color correlated) instanton-anti-instanton pairs or “molecules.” Their contributions are calculated via standard Wilson lines, with or without extra powers of gauge fields. We find a reasonable description of all central, spin-spin, and spin-orbit forces at distances 𝑟 = 0–0.7 fm, relevant for $\overline{b}$$b$ and $\overline{c}$$c$ quarkonia.
