Production of High Specific Activity 72 Se/ 72 As, 117m Sn and 203 Pb for Research and Clinical Applications: Effective target design, recycling of target material and radioisotope separation

This grant involved four objectives for producing high specific activity radionuclides using reactor and accelerator technologies that would find use in medical, industrial and research applications. This grant continued a collaboration between the scientists at the University of Washington (UW), the University of Missouri (MU) and Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and addresses the need for high specific activity radionuclides, both reactor- and accelerator-produced, and for the training and education of radiochemists in isotope production, separations and precursor syntheses. All three institutions were involved in the projects, but to different degrees. The chemistry graduate students (Ph.D. program at MU) may have participated in an internship at one of the other institutions for training and project translation/facilitation.

First Results of AUP $Nb_{3}Sn$ Quadrupole Horizontal Tests

The Large Hadron Collider will soon undergo an upgrade to increase its luminosity by a factor of ~10. A crucial part of this upgrade will be replacement of the NbTi final focus magnets with Nb3Sn magnets that achieve a ~50% increase in the field strength. This will be the first ever large-scale implementation of Nb3Sn magnets in a particle accelerator. This talk will present the program to fabricate these components and first results from horizontal tests of fully assembled cryo assemblies.

Conceptual Design of A 20 T Dipole Based on Hybrid REBCO/Nb 3 Sn Cos-theta Coil

This paper presents a design concept of an HTS/LTS hybrid dipole with 50 mm aperture and 20 T nominal field based on a cos-theta coil and a cold iron yoke. The HTS part of magnet coil uses REBCO Twisted Stacked Tape cable. The LTS part is graded and made of two Nb3Sn Rutherford cables. Due to high sensitivity of HTS/LTS coils to large stresses and strains at high fields, a Stress Management (SM) concept combined with the cos-theta coil geometry is used. The results of magnet magnetic analysis are presented and discussed.

A dedicated mirror-magnet experiment to study quench characteristics and dependencies in $Nb_{3}Sn$ coils and explore improvements of diagnostics capabilities

A single Nb3Sn short quadrupole coil in a mirror-magnet configuration was employed to investigate a wide range of phenomena and to serve as test-bed for diagnostics developments. A configurable array of spot-heaters was installed on the inner coil surface for control of induced quench conditions. Several different quench antenna arrays were positioned along the coil inner surface, and included significant sensor overlap for assessment of their relative efficiency and operation. Multiple acoustic sensors were placed on the pole and at coil ends. Optical fibers in grid configurations were put in different places on the coil and magnet for strain assessment, along with standard resistive strain gauges. Current spikes in the magnet circuit were monitored. This plethora of instrumentation aimed to support investigations on induced and spontaneous quenches, among other goals, and was supplemented by standard voltage-tap-based measurements. Voltage tap data of induced quenches from various spot-heater configurations was investigated for similarities to voltage development in spontaneous quenches. Quench antennas provided insights about current redistribution in the quenching coil and coil splices. The Quench Current-boosting Device was applied and the effect on coil training examined. This paper describes motivations behind the research, the overall test setup and main results.
