Isolated porosity: A Signature of Submarine Volcanism?

In this conference poster, we show that pumice clasts from submarine volcanoes contain more isolated pores than those from volcanoes that erupt on land. Isolated pores are void spaces that are disconnected from the clast's exterior and are unexpected because most pores coalesce in high total porosity pumice. We specifically, explore the presence of isolated pores in clasts from a 2019 eruption of Volcano F, Tonga and suggest that whole-clast cooling in water may help prevent bubble coalesce and preserve isolated pores. Poster presented at the 2025 International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of Earth's Interior Meeting (IAVCEI).

Controlled Reaction Dynamics of Binary Hexafluorides to Explore New Chemical Signatures

Conclusions • Successfully halted the UF6 hydrolysis reaction and trapped intermediate complexes • Simple alcohol instead of water leads to shifting of bands in UF6 likely from change in matrix effects • MoF6 reaction shows some potential for methyl group being present in structure of intermediates • Future work with bulkier R-groups will hopefully reveal further information as to the reaction pathway and intermediate structure via kinetics and peak shifting

Vibrational signatures of S Vacancies in monolayer tungsten disulfide

S vacancies in WS 2 affect material performance but a difficult to detect. In this work I use theoretical simulations to predict the vibrational frequencies associated with S vacancies in monolayer WS 2 . I report the phonon spectrum and band structure of the isolated monolayer and the frequencies that are introduced to the spectrum when a vacancy is created.

Assessment of Self-interrogation Safeguards Signatures for Pebble Bed Reactor Fuel

New reactor designs, such as pebble-bed reactors, present challenges for the safeguarding of fissile material. Due to the multi-pass fuel circulation design and the non-uniform path a pebble may traverse through a pebble-bed reactor, there will be variations in the irradiation history of spent fuel pebbles. The standard approach of estimating actinide quantities based on fission gamma spectra or neutron emission paired with depletion modeling may yield uncertainties too large for safeguards and material accountancy. This project investigated, through modeling and experimentation, the potential of neutron self-interrogation of spent fuel pebbles as an innovative method to implement materials accountability. As an example, our feasibility studies indicate that the mass of U-235, U-238, Pu-239 and Pu-241 can be predicted to 4.1, 0.86, 13 and 13 % accuracy, respectively, when measuring 100 closely packed end-of-life spent fuel pebbles over approximately 12 days using a 4π counting geometry.

Materials Signatures of Metallic Phases (Final Report)

This report summarizes key accomplishments from a 2 year Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project focused on advancing nanoscale characterization of metallic particulates and synthesis of laboratory-scale analogs. We successfully developed and refined nanoscale crystallography techniques with significantly improved spatial resolution and throughput compared to traditional transmission electron microscopy. We also established nanotomography capabilities for 3D particle reconstruction and began optimizing throughput for broader application. Additionally, we demonstrated the ability to relocate and characterize individual particles using atomic force microscopy (AFM), providing insights into hardness, conductivity, and magnetic behavior. On the synthesis front, we leveraged controlled and combustion-based methods to investigate annealing effects and rapid oxidation behavior of U–Fe–Ni compounds. These efforts collectively enhance our ability to characterize and interpret particulate formation and transformation under relevant conditions.

Acoustic Signatures of Solvent Extraction Processes [Poster and Paper]

Data from four low-frequency acoustic sensors were used to investigate potential acoustic characteristics of centrifugal contactor, aqueous pump, and organic pump activity during the experiment. Three of the four sensors were Gem Infrasound Loggers (Anderson, et al. 2018) with serial numbers 190, 189, and 188. They will hereafter be referred to as GEM190, GEM189, and GEM188, respectively. The fourth acoustic sensor was a Raspberry Shake & Boom (Raspberry Shake 2017), which will hereafter be referred to as the RS&B. All four sensors record audio at a sampling rate of 100 Hz, allowing analysis of signals with characteristic frequencies up to 50 Hz.
