Paramagnetic Molecular Semiconductors Combining Anisotropic Magnetic Ions with TCNQ Radical Anions

We report the synthesis, magnetic properties, and transport properties of paramagnetic metal complexes, [Co(DMF) 4 (TCNQ) 2 ](TCNQ) 2 (1), [La(DMF) 8 (TCNQ)](TCNQ) 5 (2), and [Nd(DMF) 7 (TCNQ)](TCNQ) 5 (3) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, TCNQ = 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane). All three compounds contain fractionally charged TCNQ δ– anions (0 < δ < 1) and mononuclear complex cations in which the coordination environment of a metal center includes several DMF molecules and one or two terminally coordinated TCNQ δ– anions. The coordinated TCNQ δ– anions participate in π–π stacking interactions with noncoordinated TCNQ δ– anions, forming columnar substructures that provide efficient charge-transporting pathways. Furthermore, temperature-dependent conductivity measurements demonstrate that all three compounds exhibit semiconducting behavior.

La 3 CuTe 5 : A Narrow-Gap Semiconductor with Indirect Gap and Dual-Regime Thermally Activated Transport

Metal-chalcogenide systems remain a long-standing research topic because of their structural diversity and potential to host emergent phenomena. Here, we report a new compound, La 3 CuTe 5 , synthesized from the halide-flux method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies indicate the structure to be unique among reported ones. Here, the compound crystallizes in a novel structure type adopting the orthorhombic space group Pnma and a unit cell of a = 24.3947(14) Å, b = 4.4232(2) Å, and c = 10.2142(5) Å. The tetrahedral [CuTe 4 ] building blocks form chains along [010] by corner sharing and link [LaTe 7 ] and [LaTe 8 ] polyhedra via edge sharing, resulting in a three-dimensional bulk structure. Thermal analysis results indicate that the material remains stable with a temperature up to 950 °C and decomposable at 1400 °C. First-principles calculations reveal an indirect electronic band gap and flat valence bands dominated by Te p and Cu d states. Optical absorption measurements yield a band gap of ∼0.65 eV, consistent with semiconducting behavior observed in transport measurements. Fittings to the temperature-dependent resistivity reveal two thermally activated regimes associated with Arrhenius-type conduction and three-dimensional variable range hopping, respectively.

Flux-Assisted Boron Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) Method for Synthesizing Mixed Chalcogenide Semiconductors (AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8– x and CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 ) ( Ak = Ca and Sr; RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm): Investigation of Their Magnetic and Optical Properties

We report a detailed structural analysis of a series of ten quaternary rare-earth-containing seleno-thiosilicates AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8-x and selenosilicates, CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 (Ak = Ca and Sr; RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm). Single crystals were obtained by using the flux-assisted boron chalcogen mixture (BCM) method and single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine their structures. All members of the AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8-x and CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 series crystallize in the space group R$\bar{3}$c (space group number 167) of the trigonal crystal system. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a strong preference for Se/S atoms to occupy one vs. the other of the two available sites. Polycrystalline samples were used for magnetic susceptibility and UV–visible diffuse reflectance measurements. Magnetic measurements show that CaCe₂Si₂Se₁.₇₃S₆.₂₇ and CaNd₂Si₂Se₂.₅S₅.₅ are paramagnetic with negative Weiss constants (θ = –60.1 and –26.2). Diffuse reflectance analysis gives optical band gaps of 2.7(1) eV (CaLa₂Si₂Se₂.₃₈S₅.₆₂), 2.2(1) eV (CaCe₂Si₂Se₁.₇₃S₆.₂₇), 2.5(1) eV (CaNd₂Si₂Se₂.₅S₅.₅), and 2.0(1) eV (CaCe₂Si₂Se₈), consistent with density functional theory calculations. By partially or fully replacing S sites with Se it was possible to achieve band gap tuning. Photoluminescence behavior was also investigated for CaCe 2 Si 2 Se 1.73 S 6.27 via irradiation with 375 nm ultraviolet light.

Rb 4 CuSb 2 Cl 11 and Rb 2 In 0.91(0.2) Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O: Wide Band Gap 0D Metal Halide Semiconductors

Herein, we report the discovery, structural and photophysical characterization of a new zero-dimensional (0D) lead-free all-inorganic halide, Rb 4 CuSb 2 Cl 11 , which adopts a new structure type. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) shows that the structure consists of isolated, distorted seesaw [SbCl 4 ] − and trigonal planar [CuCl 3 ] 2− units, separated by Rb + cations that provide charge balance. Optoelectronic measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate an indirect band gap of 2.89 eV, making it a candidate for wide-bandgap optoelectronic applications. Electrical resistivity was measured at 1.29 × 10 10 Ω·cm, and the trap-state density (n trap ) was found to be 7.44 × 10 10 cm −3 . Attempts to synthesize substitution analogs of Rb 4 CuSb 2 Cl 11 led to the synthesis of Rb 2 In 0.91(0.2) Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O, which was erroneously reported as Rb 2 SbCl 5 O in a previous study. Rb 2 In 0.91(0.2) Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O adopts a vacancyordered perovskite structure and exhibits broad-band yellow emission under UV excitation. The measured photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) for Rb 2 In 0.91 (0.2)Sb 0.09 Cl 5 ·H 2 O is 18.2%. These findings add to the growing class of quaternary metal halides with multiple cation and anion compositions, expanding the chemical phase space for the discovery of new materials with functional properties.

Iodine Close Packing in Hybrid Halide Bismuth(III) and Antimony(III) Semiconductors: (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Bi 2 I 10 and (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sb 2 I 10

Simple features in complex hybrid inorganic–organic crystalline materials provide opportunities for targeted discovery of materials with desired optoelectronic properties. In this study, we report the structure and optoelectronic properties of isostructural (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Bi 2 I 10 and (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sb 2 I 10 . The crystal structures are characterized by corner-connected metal-iodide octahedral chains that form a cubic close-packed iodine inorganic framework. Variable temperature UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals stark contrasts in the onset of absorption and color changes between the [MX6]3– based structures, due to differences in the interaction of the (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2+ organic ammonium cation and the iodine packing of the inorganic framework. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal flat bands reflective of the pseudo-1D crystal structure. Dark microwave conductivity (DMC) and time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) reveal an excitonic character with long carrier lifetimes, consistent with the electronically confined octahedral chains. Comparison of the structural features with those of other diammonium-containing crystals reveals that diammoniumheptane can substitute into structures, displacing inorganic octahedra while retaining a close-packed anion framework. This provides a means for targeting new hybrid materials in which “vacancy-ordering” provides a crystal chemical approach for targeting desirable optoelectronic properties.

ReaxFF Reactive Force Field for Exploring Electronically Switchable Polarization in Zn 1– x Mg x O Ferroelectric Semiconductors

Cation misfit in traditional ferroelectric crystals offers a new material platform that can drive electronic components toward structural miniaturization and high-density integration, enabling deviation from von-Neumann architectures. Here, we explore ferroelectricity in Zn 1–x Mg x O, a nontraditional ferroelectric material with tunable properties. Using data from density-functional theory calculations, we have developed a ReaxFF reactive force field to explore the ferroelectric properties of Zn 1–x Mg x O and reveal the hysteresis behavior. We discover that ferroelectric switching can be observed at a critical thickness of 10 nm with a residual polarization of ~100 μC/cm 2 . Our analysis indicates that an increase in Mg-substitution correlates with a decrease in the coercive field. We also observe a strong temperature dependence of the coercive field in Zn 1–x Mg x O, with values decreasing as the temperature increases. Additionally, we find that the distribution of Mg atoms significantly impacts the coercive field, with a clustered distribution leading to a substantial increase. In particular, a decrease in coercive field values is observed when Mg atoms are randomly distributed, compared to uniform distribution. Furthermore, leveraging tunable hysteresis behavior offered by varied percentages and distribution of Mg-substitution provides valuable insights into the design of next-generation functional devices and will inspire further investigations.

Light-Driven Iodine Loss and Photoluminescence Homogenization in Mixed-Halide Perovskite Semiconductors

Carrier-induced instabilities in lead halide perovskites are often investigated as either transient phenomena, e.g., photoinduced halide segregation or permanent performance changes, e.g., photodegradation, while the mechanistic links between them remain unclear. Here, we aim to connect these observations by studying a model mixed-halide system, MAPb(Br x I 1–x ) 3 . By combining grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction, photothermal deflection spectroscopy, and photoluminescence measurements with hyperspectral microscopy, we investigate the role of mobile halide defects and local chemistry on reversible and long-term instabilities in these materials. Our results show that mixed-halide perovskites are uniquely susceptible to photoinduced changes with illumination driving initial iodide redistribution (i.e., halide segregation), eventual selective iodine expulsion, and subsequent changes in photoinduced halide segregation behavior. By quantifying structural and compositional changes, we estimate an approximately 3–5% iodine loss in our mixed-halide samples after only 24 h of illumination. Further, using microscale measurements, we identify pre-existing iodide-rich domains as key contributors to both the observed transient photostability and permanent iodine loss in MAPbBrI 2 , and see evidence that extended light soaking results in iodide redistribution that improves optoelectronic homogeneity. Overall, our results emphasize the importance of carrier-induced halide oxidation in creating a dynamic defect landscape in mixed-halide perovskites and provide a framework for interpreting apparent light-driven changes in optoelectronic behavior through the lens of permanent compositional changes.
