Photon number amplification/duplication through parametric conversion

The performance of parametric conversion in achieving number amplification and duplication is analyzed. It is shown that the effective maximum gains G(sub *) remain well below their integer ideal values, even for large signals. Correspondingly, one has output Fano factors F(sub *) which are increasing functions of the input photon number. On the other hand, in the inverse (deamplifier/recombiner) operating mode quasi-ideal gains G(sub *) and small factors F(sub *) approximately equal to 10 percent are obtained. Output noise and non-ideal gains are ascribed to spontaneous parametric emission.

Study of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state for space-time variables in a two photon interference experiment

A pair of correlated photons generated from parametric down conversion was sent to two independent Michelson interferometers. Second order interference was studied by means of a coincidence measurement between the outputs of two interferometers. The reported experiment and analysis studied this second order interference phenomena from the point of view of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox. The experiment was done in two steps. The first step of the experiment used 50 psec and 3 nsec coincidence time windows simultaneously. The 50 psec window was able to distinguish a 1.5 cm optical path difference in the interferometers. The interference visibility was measured to be 38 percent and 21 percent for the 50 psec time window and 22 percent and 7 percent for the 3 nsec time window, when the optical path difference of the interferometers were 2 cm and 4 cm, respectively. By comparing the visibilities between these two windows, the experiment showed the non-classical effect which resulted from an E.P.R. state. The second step of the experiment used a 20 psec coincidence time window, which was able to distinguish a 6 mm optical path difference in the interferometers. The interference visibilities were measured to be 59 percent for an optical path difference of 7 mm. This is the first observation of visibility greater than 50 percent for a two interferometer E.P.R. experiment which demonstrates nonclassical correlation of space-time variables.

CCDs and photon counting devices: Applications in space and from the ground

The development of the 2048 by 2048 CCD (Charge Coupled Device) for a second generation space telescope instrument has resulted in devices with very few defects, dark currents of less than 12 electrons/pixel/hour at -80 deg, readout noise levels of less than 4 electrons rms, and excellent charge transfer efficiency at signal levels of less than 10 electrons. A second generation of devices that capitalize on these characteristics have been produced and are currently in test. Faster frame transfer devices that preserve these characteristics have been designed that include tridirectional taps in the serial register. The state of the art in CCD's as photon counting detectors is reviewed.

Mars laser altimeter based on a single photon ranging technique

The Mars 94/96 Mission will carry, among others things, the balloon probe experiment. The balloon with the scientific cargo in the gondola underneath will drift in the Mars atmosphere, its altitude will range from zero, in the night, up to 5 km at noon. The accurate gondola altitude will be determined by an altimeter. As the Balloon gondola mass is strictly limited, the altimeter total mass and power consumption are critical; maximum allowed is a few hundred grams a few tens of mWatts of average power consumption. We did propose, design, and construct the laser altimeter based on the single photon ranging technique. Topics covered include the following: principle of operation, altimeter construction, and ground tests.

Two-Photon/Laser-Induced Fluorescence (TP/LIF) sensor

The Two-Photon/Laser-Induced Fluorescence (TP/LIF) technique is based on the stepwise excitation of the OH transitions, X(exp 2)II, v(exp '') = 0 yields X(exp 2)II, v(exp '') = 1 (lambda = 2.9 microns) and X(exp 2)II v(exp '') = 1 yields A(exp2)Sigma, v' = 0 (lambda = 345 nm) with background free fluorescence monitoring of the A(exp 2)Sigma, v' = 0 yields X(exp 2)II, v(exp '') = 0 transition near 309 nm. This technique has awaited the advent of a suitable mid-infrared (2.9 microns) laser source. Turnable mid-IR lasers now exist that are capable of meeting the specifications required of a high sensitivity TP/LIF OH sensor.

Sum-frequency generation from photon number squeezed light

We investigate the quantum fluctuations of the fields produced in sum-frequency (SF) generation from light initially in the photon number squeezed state. It is found that, to the fourth power term, the output SF light is sub-Poissonian whereas the quantum fluctuations of the input beams increase. Quantum anticorrelation also exists in SF generation.

Outburst of TeV photons from Markarian 421

Markarian 421, an active galactic nucleus (AGN) of the BL Lacertae type, is the closest Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET)-detected AGN. It has been monitored by the Whipple Observatory very high energy gamma-ray telescope since its discovery at TeV energies, for approximately 90 nights, totaling 130 hours of observation. Observations from 1993 December 23 to 1994 May 10 showed an average sourve flux only half that of its 1992 discovery level. However, observations on 1994 May 14 and 15 show an increase in flux above this quiescent level by a factor of approximately 10. The timescale of this increase provides the best geometric constraint on the extent of TeV photon emission regions within AGNs. The observation of the high TeV flux occurred 1 day prior to the observation by ASCA of a very high 2-10 keV X-ray flux. This strong TeV outburst is reminiscent of the behavior seen for the stronger 100 MeV-GeV EGRET sources (e.g. 3C 279) but was not anticipated in view of the fact that the six EGRET observations of Mrk 421 from 1991 June to 1993 July showed no evidence for variability.

Delayed hard photons from gamma-ray bursts

The delayed hard (up to 25 GeV) photons observed more than an hour following a gamma-ray burst on 1994 February 17 may result from the collisions of relativistic nucleons with a dense cloud, producing pi(0). The required cloud density is approx. 2 x 10(exp 11)/cu cm. This cloud may be the remains of the disrupted envelope of a neutron star, and may survive as an excretion disk of approx. 10(exp 14) - 10 (exp 15) cm radius around the coalescing binary.

Photonic Diagnostic Technique For Thin Photoactive Films

Photonic diagnostic technique developed for use in noninvasive, rapid evaluation of thin paraelectric/ferroelectric films. Method proves useful in basic research, on-line monitoring for quality control at any stage of fabrication, and development of novel optoelectronic systems. Used to predict imprint-prone memory cells, and to study time evolution of defects in ferroelectric memories during processing. Plays vital role in enabling high-density ferroelectric memory manufacturing. One potential application lies in use of photoresponse for nondestructive readout of polarization memory states in high-density, high-speed memory devices. In another application, extension of basic concept of method makes possible to develop specially tailored ferrocapacitor to act as programmable detector, wherein remanent polarization used to modulate photoresponse. Large arrays of such detectors useful in optoelectronic processing, computing, and communication.

Coherent States on Riemann Surfaces as m-Photon States

Coherent states on the m-sheeted sphere (for the SU(2) group) are used to define analytic representations. The corresponding generators create and annihilate clusters of m-photons. Non-linear Hamiltonians that contain these generators are considered and their eigenvectors and eigenvalues are explicitly calculated. The Holstein-Primakoff and Schwinger formalisms in this context are also discussed.

Cooperative Effects in a One Photon Micromaser

For small photon numbers, trapping states are difficult to detect due to the influence of the collective effects. We find that if the atoms are injected with atomic polarization, the micromaser becomes more insensitive to these effects. In particular, the squeezing properties of the cotangent states are basically unchanged.

Responses of the Jovian Atmosphere to Cometary Particles and Photon Impacts

Spectra of soft x-ray and EUV emissions of oxygen ions, precipitating into the Jovian atmosphere, are calculated, taking into account the dynamical character of the energy and charge distributions of the ions as they propagate. Monte-Carlo simulations are performed using experimental and theoretical cross sections of ion collisions with the atmospheric gases. The numbers of x-ray and EUV photons produced per precipitating oxygen ion are calculated as functions of the initial ion energy and charge. The energy and charge distribution functions are used to evaluate the intensities of characteristic x-ray and EUV spectral emission lines of oxygen ions in the Jovian aurora.

Photonic and Opto-Electronic Applications of Polydiacetylene Films Photodeposited from Solution and Polydiacetylene Copolymer Networks

Polydiacetylenes (PDAS) are attractive materials for both electronic and photonic applications because of their highly conjugated electronic structures. They have been investigated for applications as both one-dimensional (linear chain) conductors and nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. One of the chief limitations to the use of PDAs has been the inability to readily process them into useful forms such as films and fibers. In our laboratory we have developed a novel process for obtaining amorphous films of a PDA derived from 2-methyl4-nitroaniline using photodeposition with Ultraviolet (UV) light from monomer solutions onto transparent substrates. Photodeposition from solution provides a simple technique for obtaining PDA films in any desired pattern with good optical quality. This technique has been used to produce PDA films that show potential for optical applications such as holographic memory storage and optical limiting, as well as third-order NLO applications such as all-optical refractive index modulation, phase modulation and switching. Additionally, copolymerization of diacetylenes with other monomers such as methacrylates provides a means to obtain materials with good processibility. Such copolymers can be spin cast to form films, or drawn by either melt or solution extrusion into fibers. These films or fibers can then be irradiated with UV to photopolymerize the diacetylene units to form a highly stable cross-linked PDA-copolymer network. If such films are electrically poled while being irradiated, they can achieve the asymmetry necessary for second-order NLO applications such as electro-optic switching. On Earth, formation of PDAs by the above mentioned techniques suffers from defects and inhomogeneities caused by convective flows that can arise during processing. By studying the formation of these materials in the reduced-convection, diffusion-controlled environment of space we hope to better understand the factors that affect their processing, and thereby, their nature and properties. Ultimately it may even be feasible to conduct space processing of PDAs for technological applications.

Photon-Weighted Midpoint Exposure Meter for Keck/HIRES Extrasolar Planet Research

NASA Grant was received for research involving the construction of a photon-weighting midpoint exposure meter for the Keck HIRES spectrometer, and for support of our NASA/Keck-based planet research with this instrumentation. The research funds were also to be used to make our iodine cell calibration system and exposure meter available to the NASA Keck observing community. Progress this past year, the second of the 3-year granting period, involved work in 4 areas: 1) Further construction of the midpoint exposure meter. 2) Assisting observers with use of the Iodine system. 3) Acquisition of precision radial velocity data on our program star sample with continued monitoring to proceed in subsequent years as available telescope time permits. 4) Reduction and analysis of incoming precision radial velocity data to reject problematic and uninteresting program stars, and to identify promising planet candidates.
