Perturbative QCD contribution to transverse single spin asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process and SIDIS

In a previous publication [Benić , ], we have computed the perturbative QCD contribution to transverse single spin asymmetries (SSAs) in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) involving the g T ( x ) distribution. In this paper, we first present a more efficient derivation of the asymmetries which is applicable to both transverse and longitudinal SSAs and correct some inconsistencies in our previous calculation. We then adapt the method to compute transverse SSAs in the Drell-Yan process proportional to g T ( x ) and its gluonic counterpart and discuss the crossing symmetry between the results for SIDIS and the Drell-Yan process. Finally, we present numerical results for various asymmetries measurable at the EIC, RHIC, COMPASS, and Fermilab (SpinQuest), including also part of the genuine twist-three corrections to g T ( x ) from a recent global analysis. We find that the asymmetries can reach percent-level magnitude, if the kinematics predominantly probes the large- x (valence) region of the polarized proton, but remain at subpercent levels otherwise. Structure of the high-spin, 𝛽-decaying state in the neutron-rich nucleus 146 La

Excited structures in 146 Ce were populated in 𝛽 decay of the high-spin state in the neutron-rich nucleus 146 La. The beam was produced by the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility at Argonne National Laboratory, reaccelerated by the ATLAS accelerator, and implanted on a moving-tape system in the middle of the GAMMASPHERE array. The decay scheme of the high-spin, 𝛽-decaying state in 146 La was revised with respect to previous studies and evaluated nuclear data. Here, the structure of 146 La is discussed in the framework of the deformed Nilsson model and systematics of known quasiparticle structures in the region.

Hidden Spin-Isospin Exchange Symmetry

The strong interactions among nucleons have an approximate spin-isospin exchange symmetry that arises from the properties of quantum chromodynamics in the limit of many colors, N c . However this large- N c symmetry is well hidden and reveals itself only when averaging over intrinsic spin orientations. Furthermore, the symmetry is obscured unless the momentum resolution scale is close to an optimal scale that we call Λ large-N c . We show that the large-N c derivation requires a momentum resolution scale of Λ large-N c ~ 500 MeV. We derive a set of spin-isospin exchange sum rules and discuss implications for the spectrum of 30 P and applications to nuclear forces, nuclear structure calculations, and three-nucleon interactions.

Structure of the high-spin, β-decaying state in the neutron-rich nucleus 146 La

Excited structures in 146 Ce were populated in β decay of the high-spin state in the neutronrich nucleus 146 La. The beam was produced by the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility at Argonne National Laboratory, re-accelerated by the ATLAS accelerator and implanted on a moving-tape system in the middle of the GAMMASPHERE array. The decay scheme of the high-spin, β-decaying state in 146 La was revised with respect to previous studies and evaluated nuclear data. The structure of 146 La is discussed in the framework of the deformed Nilsson model and systematics of known quasiparticle structures in the region.

Observations of disk-shaped bodies in free flight at terminal velocity

Ten disk-shaped models of a proposed nuclear heat source module were released from an aircraft and observed by radar. The initial launch attitude, spin rate, and mass of the models were varied. Significant differences were observed in the mode of flight and terminal velocity among models of different mass and launch attitudes. The data were analyzed to yield lift and drag coefficients as a function of Reynolds number. The total sea-level velocity of the models was found to be well correlated as a function of mass per unit frontal area. The demonstrated terminal velocity of the modular disk heat source, about 27 m/sec for this specific design, is only 33% of that of existing heat source designs.

Two-dimensional ring polymer molecular dynamics determination of the MnO + + H 2 /D 2 reaction rates on a Δ-machine learned potential energy surface

In this work, we investigate the impact of nuclear quantum effects in the kinetics of the MnO + + H 2 reaction, a prototypical system for gas-phase H 2 activation by transition metal oxide ions. The DFT based potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the lowest-lying quintet and septet spin states reported in our previous work are improved by 2953 newly calculated CCSD(T)/AVDZ points using a delta-machine learning (Δ-ML) method. To examine nuclear quantum effects, the rate coefficients are computed using ring-polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD). Due to the mechanistic complexity of the reaction, two reaction coordinates are necessary to map out the free-energy surface and an extended RPMD rate theory is developed. The calculated RPMD rate coefficients on the new PES are in better agreement with experimental data. The calculated kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) range from 1.6 to 1.8, also in good agreement with the experimental values. Additionally, the converged RPMD rate coefficients are 2.3 to 3.1 times higher than their classical counterparts across the studied temperature range, suggesting the presence of moderate nuclear quantum effects in this reaction.

Beyond magnons in Nd 2 ScNbO 7 : An Ising pyrochlore antiferromagnet with all-in–all-out order and random fields

We report the low-temperature magnetic properties of Nd 3+ pyrochlore Nd 2 ScNbO 7 . Susceptibility and magnetization show an easy-axis moment, and heat capacity reveals a phase transition to long-range order at T N =371(2) mK with a fully recovered ΔS=Rln(2), 53% of it recovered for T>T N . Elastic neutron scattering shows a long-range all-in all-out magnetic order with low-Q diffuse elastic scattering. Inelastic neutron scattering shows a low-energy flat band, indicating a magnetic Hamiltonian similar to Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Nuclear hyperfine excitations measured by ultra-high-resolution neutron backscattering indicate a distribution of static electronic moments below T N , which may be due to B-site disorder influencing Nd crystal electric fields. Analysis of heat-capacity data shows an unexpected T-linear or T 3/2 term which is inconsistent with conventional magnon quasiparticles, but is consistent with fractionalized spinons or gapless local spin excitations. We use legacy data to show similar behavior in Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Comparing local static moments also reveals a suppression of the nuclear Schottky anomaly in temperature, evidencing a fraction of Nd sites with nearly zero static moment, consistent with exchange-disorder-induced random singlet formation. Finally, taken together, these measurements suggest an unusual fluctuating magnetic ground state which mimics a spin liquid, but may not actually be one.

Nuclear energy density functionals grounded in ab initio calculations

Here, we discuss the construction of a nuclear energy density functional (EDF) from ab initio computations and advocate the need for a methodical approach that is free from ad hoc assumptions. The equations of state (EoSs) of symmetric nuclear and pure neutron matter are computed using the chiral NNLO sat and the phenomenological AV4' + UIX c Hamiltonians as inputs to self-consistent Green's function (SCGF) and auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) methods. We propose a convenient parametrization of the EoS as a function of the Fermi momentum and fit it on the SCGF and AFDMC calculations. We apply the ab initio based EDF to carry out an analysis of the binding energies and charge radii of different nuclei in the local density approximation. The NNLO sat -based EDF produces encouraging results, whereas the AV4' + UIX c -based one is farther from experiment. Possible explanations of these different behaviors are suggested, and the importance of gradient and spin-orbit terms is analyzed. Our paper paves the way for a practical and systematic way to merge ab initio nuclear theory and density functional theory, while shedding light on some critical aspects of this procedure.

Frustration-driven magnetic correlations in the spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe⁢(HPO 3 ) 2

Here, a detailed study of the structural and magnetic properties of a spin-5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe⁢(HPO 3 ) 2 is presented using x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on a polycrystalline sample. The crystal structure features an equilateral triangular lattice of Fe 3+ ions. The thermodynamic measurements reveal the onset of a magnetic long-range order at 𝑇 N⁢1 ≃7.8K in zero field, followed by another low-temperature field-induced ordering at 𝑇 N⁢2 in higher fields. The transition at 𝑇 N⁢1 is further confirmed from the NMR spin lattice relaxation measurements. The value of the frustration ratio (𝑓≃7) implies moderate spin frustration in the compound. The 31 P NMR spectra exhibit two distinct spectral lines corresponding to two inequivalent phosphorus sites (P1 and P2), consistent with the crystal structure. The P1 site is strongly coupled with an isotropic hyperfine coupling of 𝐴$^{iso}_{hf}$ = 0.55⁢(2)⁢ T/𝜇 B while the P2 site is weakly coupled with 𝐴$^{iso}_{hf}$ = 0.25⁢(3)⁢ T/𝜇 B with the Fe 3+ ions. The magnetic susceptibility and NMR shift data are described well assuming a spin-5/2 isotropic triangular lattice antiferromagnetic model with an average exchange coupling of 𝐽/𝑘 B = 2.8⁢(2)⁢K. Below 𝑇 N⁢1 , the spectra evolve into a nearly rectangular powder pattern, indicating a commensurate antiferromagnetic type order. The 31 P spin-lattice relaxation rate well below 𝑇N⁢1 follows a 𝑇 3 temperature dependence, implying a two-magnon Raman scattering mechanism in the ordered state. Three well-defined phase regimes are clearly ascertained in the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram, reflecting a weak magnetic anisotropy in the compound.

First measurement of the asymmetry and the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand from the 3 $\vec{H}$e ($\vec{γ},p$) 2 H reaction at an incident photon energy of 29 MeV

The first measurement of the 3 $\vec{H}$e ($\vec{γ},p$) 2 H process was performed at the High Intensity γ-ray Source ( HIγS ) facility at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory using a circularly polarized, monoenergetic γ -ray beam and a longitudinally polarized 3 He target. The spin-dependent asymmetry and the contribution from the two-body photodisintegration to the 3 He Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand are extracted and compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon system calculations at the incident photon energy of 29 MeV. The data are in general agreement with the various theoretical predictions based on the Siegert theorem or on explicit inclusion of meson-exchange currents.

Linking the Spin Transition of Ferric Iron in δ‐(Al,Fe)OOH to Water Storage in the Lower Mantle

As the most massive geochemical reservoir, the lower mantle affects the Earth's budget of volatile elements, including hydrogen or H 2 O. The properties of minerals in the lower mantle are further affected by changes in the electronic configurations of iron cations, that is, by spin transitions. The feedback between spin transitions and potential storage of H 2 O in solid hydrous phases in the lower mantle, however, remains unexplored. By combining high‐pressure nuclear resonant inelastic X‐ray scattering and high‐pressure high‐temperature X‐ray diffraction experiments, we constrained the thermal equation of state of δ‐(Al,Fe)OOH, a member of the phase H solid solution. Based on the derived thermal equation of state of δ‐(Al,Fe)OOH and the underlying thermodynamic model, we calculate the excess Gibbs free energy that arises from the spin transition of ferric iron in this compound and evaluate the effect on phase equilibria. The results of our analysis show that the spin transition of ferric iron in phase H may significantly reduce the thermodynamic activity and hence the concentration of H 2 O in a coexisting hydrous melt. As a consequence, nominally anhydrous minerals of the lower mantle may become dehydrated in the presence of phase H. Our analysis further suggests that, under certain conditions, the spin transition may expand the thermal stability of Fe 3+ ‐bearing phase H and create a geochemical link between the storage of H 2 O in phase H and ferric iron in the lower mantle.

On the physics potential to study the gluon content of proton and deuteron at NICA SPD

The Spin Physics Detector (SPD) is a future multipurpose experiment foreseen to run at the NICA collider, which is currently under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna, Russia). The physics program of the experiment is based on collisions of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at √s up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to 10 32 cm –2 s –1 . SPD will operate as a universal facility for the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon, using complementary probes such as: charmonia, open-charm, and prompt-photon production processes. Furthermore, the aim of this work is to provide a thorough review of the physics objectives that can potentially be addressed at SPD, underlining related theoretical aspects and discussing relevant experimental results when available. Among different pertinent phenomena particular attention is drawn to the study of the gluon helicity, gluon Sivers and Boer-Mulders functions in the nucleon, as well as the gluon transversity distribution in the deuteron, via the measurement of single and double spin asymmetries.

Two-Dimensional Uranyl Borates: From Conventional to Extreme Synthetic Conditions: Two-Dimensional Uranyl Borates: From Conventional to Extreme Synthetic Conditions

A systematic investigation of uranyl borates under different synthetic conditions resulted in five new 2D compounds, namely, (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )], Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O), α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ], β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] and K 2.5 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 2.5 (OH) 1.5 ] · (H 2 O) 2.5 . (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] and Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O) were obtained from hydrothermal reactions at 220 °C using the same mineralizer. Both materials possess the uranophane sheet topology with different symmetry of the unit cells. In the structure of (H 3 O)[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] and Li[(UO 2 )(BO 3 )] · (H 2 O), UO 7 pentagonal bipyramids share edges and vertexes with four BO 3 planar triangles. α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] and β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] are polytypes. α-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] was synthesized from a high-temperature solid-state reaction under ambient pressure; whereas β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] was obtained from a high-temperature/high-pressure (HT/HP) reaction. Both structures have an identical anion topology, but β-K 4 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 4 ] crystallizes in space group with higher symmetry. In K 2.5 [(UO 2 ) 5 (BO 3 ) 2 O 2.5 (OH) 1.5 ] · (H 2 O) 2.5 , which was obtained from a hydrothermal reaction, UO 7 polyhedra share vertexes and edges with two independent BO 3 triangles, forming the most complex uranyl borate layers among all five compounds. The different synthetic routes, novel topologies, thermal behavior and Raman spectra are discussed.
