Peculiarities of spectra of induced emission of polymethine dye solutions at low temperatures

Results from studying the induced emission spectra with monochromatic excitation (superluminescent regime) within a temperature range of 300 K - 5.2 K are presented. The significant feature of such operations is the appearance of quasi-lines whose minimum width is realized at 4.2 K. The frequency distribution of the quasi-lines unambiguously characterizes the dye investigated. When interpreting these results, the idea of an inhomogeneous broadening of the polymethine dye spectra in the solution being studied experimentally was used for the first time. The quasi-lines observed are interpreted as a manifestation of the electron vibration structure of singlet states of a complex molecule.

The CI pressure shift and gravitational redshift of the cool DBQA5 white dwarf LDS678A

A high resolution ultraviolet spectrum of the helium rich degenerate LDS 678A, obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite is presented. LDS 678A is the coolest metallic line generate (DQ or DZ) yet observed with the IUE scale. These observations provide a detailed line profile of the strong C I 2479 absorption line with equivalent width (W sub 2479 = 2.35 plus or minus 0.06 angstroms) from which theoretical line profile fits yield a C abundance (log C/He = 6.4). The presence of carbon in a helium rich atmosphere lends credence to the notion that LDS 678A is a transitional case between the DB white dwarfs with nearly pure helium atmospheres and the helium rich DQ white dwarfs which exhibit carbon bands. Corrected for an inferred pressure shift for the C I line, a gravitational redshift is deduced from which a most probable mass of 0.55 solar mass is derived.

Curves of growth for van der Waals broadened spectral lines

Curves of growth are evaluated for a spectral line broadened by the van der Waals interactions during collisions. The growth of the equivalent widths of such lines is shown to be dependent on the product of the perturber density and the 6/10 power of the van der Waals potential coefficient. When the parameter is small, the widths grow as the 1/2 power of the optical depth as they do for the Voigt profile: but when the parameter is large, they grow as 2/3 power and, hence, faster than the Voigt profile. An approximate analytical expression for the computed growth characteristics is given.

Determination of Van der Waals broadening at temperatures of astrophysical interest.

Discussion of the results of experiments analyzing the widths of shock-excited emission lines at temperatures of about 5000 K. The width of two neutral silicon lines (4102 and 5948 A) were measured as broadened by argon, and the shift of one of these lines (4102 A) was determined. Likewise, the width one of the lines of cesium (4593 A) was measured as broadened by argon and neon. These data are compared with other experimental data to determine the temperature dependence of the broadening. Significant disagreements with simple theory are found, the experimental values of the widths being larger than the theoretical values by factors of 1.5-2.

Luminosity effects and the emission-line properties of quasars with 0 less than z less than 3.8

We present data and a spectral atlas for 76 quasars with 2.97 less than z less than 3.80 and for 33 quasars with z approximately 2, together with measures of 73 quasars from the IUE archives that mostly have z less than 1. The quasars provide a sampling of the luminosity-redshift plane at constant luminosity for 0 less than z less than 3.8, a range of a factor of 40 in luminosity for 3 less than z less than 3.8, and a range of 10(exp 3) in luminosity for z less than 1. We investigate the behavior of the principle emission lines from 1200-2000 A and find: (1) The Baldwin effect at z greater than 3 is definitely present in the C IV lambda 1549 line and in the other strong emission lines in varying degrees except for N v lambda-lambda(1240) and 1400, where the effect is very weak. (2) The component that varies with luminosity has a narrower full width at half maximum (FWHM) than the average line width and appears consistent with the first component of the principal component analysis of the Large Bright Quasar Survey sample by Francis et al. (1992). (3) There is no evidence for redshifted-dependent spectral changes, Baldwin or otherwise, in quasars of the same luminosity in the z approximately 2 and z greater than 3 samples. (4) The Baldwin effect in the IUE, z approximately 2, and z greater than 3 subsamples joins smoothly, although the slope of the effect steepens with increasing luminosity. (5) The results are consistent with the ionization parameter decreasing with increasing luminosity. (6) The large ratio of N v to Ly-alpha and its small change with luminosity are consistent with the arguments of Hamann & Ferland (1993a, b) that the N/C ratio is enhanced in high-luminosity quasars with z greater than 3.

Detection of gamma-ray lines from the direction of the Crab Nebula

The Crab Nebula and its associated pulsar NP0531+21 were observed during a balloon flight of the Durham MK1 high resolution spectrometer on June 6, 1981. The data indicate two significant line features of energies of 404.7 and 1049.8 keV with intensities of (7.2 + or - 2.1) x 0.001 and (12.0 + or - 0.5) x 0.01/5. After subtracting instrumental resolution, the widths of these lines were determined to be (3.5 + or - 1.4) keV and (6.3 + or - 1.6) keV at 404.7 and 1049.8 keV respectively. A third line at 78.8 keV was detected as a transient event with a peak intensity of (1.1 + or - 0.3) x 0.01 photons sq cm/s and a width 1.5 keV. It is shown that all three line features are consistent with a point source located at the Crab.

Two-micron line emission from the H II region G 333.6-0.2

Spectrophotometry of the H II region G 333.6-0.2 with a resolution of approximately 100 shows strong emission lines of hydrogen and helium superimposed on a continuum. Spatial variations in the equivalent widths of the lines suggest the presence of very hot (at least 600 K) dust grains within the region. The shape of this very powerful H II region indicates that its dense ionized core is being continuously replenished from a reservoir of neutral gas.

Broad Band X-Ray Telescope observations of NGC 4151 - Iron line diagnostics

The Fe K-alpha emission line is a potentially powerful diagnostic tool in the X-ray spectra of AGNs, however, this feature has previously been observed with relatively poor spectral resolution. The Broad Band X-Ray Telescope has provided us with the first high-quality, medium-resolution X-ray spectral data. We are able to constrain the width of the 6.4 keV Fe K-alpha line in NGC 4151 to be less than 160 eV FWHM (7,500 km/s), in contrast with former measurements of the line width. Also, we have limited information on the shape of the line profile. In addition to the strong narrow Fe K-alpha feature, we detect weaker broad residuals between 5-8 keV.

Observations of O and Of stars.

Evaluation of spectrograms with a dispersion of 16.2 A/mm covering the spectral range from 3300 to 4900 A obtained for three early O stars and three early Of stars. Detailed line profiles of selected hydrogen and helium lines were obtained, and equivalent widths of nearly all visible lines were measured. Comparison of the spectroscopic properties between Of stars and O stars suggests that Of stars have lower surface gravities than do O stars. Comparison of their photometric properties confirms this suggestion. Hence present temperature scales for O5-O8 stars should not be applied to Of stars until the effect of gravity in determining spectral type has been determined. In addition, the spectra suggest that atmospheric models of Of stars should take into account spherical and hydrodynamic effects.

Broad-Band Spectroscopy of Hercules X-1 with Suzaku

Hercules X-1 was observed with Suzaku in the main-on state from 2005 to 2010. The 0.4- 100 keV wide-band spectra obtained in four observations showed a broad hump around 4-9 keV in addition to narrow Fe lines at 6.4 and 6.7 keV. The hump was seen in all the four observations regardless of the selection of the continuum models. Thus it is considered a stable and intrinsic spectral feature in Her X-1. The broad hump lacked a sharp structure like an absorption edge. Thus it was represented by two different spectral models: an ionized partial covering or an additional broad line at 6.5 keV. The former required a persistently existing ionized absorber, whose origin was unclear. In the latter case, the Gaussian fitting of the 6.5-keV line needs a large width of sigma = 1.0-1.5 keV and a large equivalent width of 400-900 eV. If the broad line originates from Fe fluorescence of accreting matter, its large width may be explained by the Doppler broadening in the accretion flow. However, the large equivalent width may be inconsistent with a simple accretion geometry.

Modeling the temporal and spatial variations of the vertical structure of Jupiter's atmosphere using observations of the 3-0 hydrogen quadrupole lines

An observational program was established in 1983 to monitor the spatial and temporal variations in the Jovian atmosphere over short and long time scales. The program involves tracking several different longitudes as they rotate around the planet from one limb to another. This tracking experiment was done at many different wavelengths including the 3-0 S(1) and S(0) hydrogen quadrupole lines as well as several broad band methane absorptions. The June 1983 hydrogen quadrupole data was reduced and equivalent widths were measured for approximately 25 east-west positions across the planet at 7 different latitudes for both wavelengths. The data for the South Tropical Zone (20 deg. S) was modeled extensively and the effects of the various model parameters on the value of the calculated equivalent widths of both lines was measured as a longitude rotated from the east (or morning) limb to the west (or evening) limb. The value of the equivalent width is also quite sensitive to the height of the NH3 cloud top and to the value used for the single scattering albedo. A combination of these parameters changing on a diurnal time scale could also explain these observations. This gradual increase from one limb to the other appears in the data for both the North and South Equatorial Belts as well as the equatorial region and the North Tropical Zone. Models that used only normal hydrogen and models that used only equilibrium hydrogen were studied.

Hopkins ultraviolet telescope observations of the far-ultraviolet spectrum of NGC 4151

Observations of the FUV spectrum of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 from 912 to 1860 A during the flight of Astro-1 aboard the space shuttle Columbia in December 1990 are reported. Broad emission lines with full-width at half-maximum of about 8500 km/s dominate the spectrum. Numerous absorption features modify the continuum shape, particularly at wavelengths shortward of Ly-alpha. The continuum turns over sharply below 1000 A and disappears by 924 A, well above the redshifted Lyman edge of NGC 4151 at 915 A. The absorption lines have intrinsic widths of about 1000 km/s and are blueshifted relative to the system velocity of NGC 4151 by 200-1300 km/s. Absorption of the continuum by the converging higher-order Lyman lines explains the sharp turnover of the continuum below 1000 A. The blueshifts of the absorption lines, their large intrinsic widths, and the inferred high densities are all consistent with outflowing material originating in the broad-line region.

The Solar Flare 4: 10 keV X-ray Spectrum

The 4-10 keV solar flare spectrum includes highly excited lines of stripped Ca, Fe, and Ni ions as well as a continuum steeply falling with energy. Groups of lines at approximately 7 keV and approximately 8 keV, observed during flares by the broad-band RHESSI spectrometer and called here the Fe-line and Fe/Ni-line features, are formed mostly of Fe lines but with Ni lines contributing to the approximately 8 keV feature. Possible temperature indicators of these line features are discussed - the peak or centroid energies of the Fe-line feature, the line ratio of the Fe-line to the Fe/Ni-line features, and the equivalent width of the Fe-line feature. The equivalent width is by far the most sensitive to temperature. However, results will be confused if, as is commonly believed, the abundance of Fe varies from flare to flare, even during the course of a single flare. With temperature determined from the thermal continuum, the Fe-line feature becomes a diagnostic of the Fe abundance in flare plasmas. These results are of interest for other hot plasmas in coronal ionization equilibrium such as stellar flare plasmas, hot gas in galaxies, and older supernova remnants.

X-ray bumps, iron K-alpha lines, and X-ray suppression by obscuring tori in Seyfert galaxies

We investigate the X-ray spectral properties of unobscured type 1 and obscured type 2 Seyferts as predicted by the unified Seyfert scheme. We consider the reprocessing of X-ray photons by photoelectric absorption, iron fluorescence, and Compton downscattering in the obscuring tori surrounding these active nuclei, and compute by Monte Carlo methods the reprocessed spectra as a function of the viewing angle. Depending on the optical depth and shape of the torus, and on the viewing angle, the X-ray flux can be suppressed by substantial factors when our line of sight is obscured. We show that an immediate consequence of the existence of an obscuring thick torus is the production in the spectra of type 1 Seyfert galaxies of a bump in the continuum above 10-20 keV and an Fe K-alpha line with significant equivalent width. In those type 2 Seyferts for which the hard X-ray spectrum has been substantially suppressed, the equivalent width of the Fe K-alpha line in the transmitted spectrum can be very large.

Modeling the spatiotemporal organization of velocity storage in the vestibuloocular reflex by optokinetic studies

1. A generalized three-dimensional state space model of visual vestibular interaction was developed. Matrix and dynamical system operators associated with inputs from the semicircular canals, otolith velocity estimator, and the visual system have been incorporated into the model, which focus on their relationship to the velocity storage integrator. 2. A relationship was postulated between the eigenvalues and the direction of the eigenvectors of the system matrix and the orientation of the spatial vertical. It was assumed that the system matrix for a tilted position was a composition of two linear transformations of the system matrix for the upright position. One transformation modifies the eigenvalues of the system matrix, whereas another rotates the eigenvectors of the system matrix. The pitch and roll eigenvectors rotate with the head, whereas the yaw axis eigenvector remains approximately spatially invariant. 3. Based on the three-dimensional model, a computational procedure was formulated to identify the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the system matrix with the use of a modification of the marquardt algorithm. With the use of data obtained from a monkey, it was shown that the three-dimensional behavior of velocity storage cannot be predicted solely in terms of its time constants, i.e., the inverse of its eigenvalues. With the use of the same eigenvalues the data could either be fit or not fit, depending on the eigenvector directions. Therefore, it is necessary to specify eigenvector directions when characterizing velocity storage in three dimensions. 4. Parameters found with the use of the Marquardt algorithm were incorporated into the model. Diagonal matrices in a head coordinate frame were introduced for coupling the visual system to the integrator and to the direct optokinetic pathway. Simulations of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and optokinetic after-nystagmus (OKAN) were run. The model predicted the behavior of yaw and pitch OKN and OKAN when the animal is upright. It also predicted the cross-coupling in the side down position. The trajectories in velocity space were also accurately simulated. 5. One of the predictions of the model is that when the stimulus direction is along an eigenvector, the trajectory in velocity space is a straight line. Using the "spectral width" of the residuals from a straight line sequence during OKAN, we developed a methodology to estimate how close the OKAN decay was to an eigenvector trajectory. 6. Thus we have developed a model-based approach for studying and interpreting the response characteristics of velocity storage in three dimensions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS).

Chandra High Resolution Spectroscopy of the Circumnuclear Matter in the Broad Line Radio Galaxy, 3C 445

We present evidence for X-ray line emitting and absorbing gas in the nucleus of the Broad-Line Radio Galaxy (BLRG), 3C445. A 200 ks Chandra LETG observation of 3C 445 reveals the presence of several highly ionized emission lines in the soft X-ray spectrum, primarily from the He and H-like ions of O, Ne, Mg and Si. Radiative recombination emission is detected from O VII and O VIII, indicating that the emitting gas is photoionized. The He-like emission appears to be resolved into forbidden and intercombination line components, which implies a high density of greater than 10(sup 10) cm(sup -3), while the lines are velocity broadened with a mean width of 2600 km s(sup -1). The density and widths of the ionized lines indicate an origin of the gas on sub-parsec scales in the Broad Line Region (BLR). The X-ray continuum of 3C 445 is heavily obscured by a photoionized absorber of column density N(sub H) = 2 x 10(sup 23) cm(sup -2) and ionization parameter log xi = 1.4 erg cm s(sup -1). However the view of the X-ray line emission is unobscured, which requires the absorber to be located at radii well within any parsec scale molecular torus. Instead we suggest that the X-ray absorber in 3C 445 may be associated with an outflowing, but clumpy accretion disk wind, with an observed outflow velocity of approximately 10000 km s(sup -1).
