Anhydrous vs Hydrated f-Element Acetate Polymers Dictated by the Stoichiometry of Protic Acidic/Basic Azole Mixtures

Continuing our investigations of ionic liquid (IL) based routes to a library of f-element/soft donor complexes which could be studied crystallographically, we have explored the dissolution of f-element salts in protic imidazole-based ILs containing only soft donors at high temperatures to drive off volatiles, including water and carboxylic or mineral acids. Here we present our results, reacting acidic and basic azoles in 1:3 or 1:1 stoichiometric compositions at elevated temperature, followed by saturation with Nd(OAc) 3 ·xH 2 O or Ce(OAc) 3 ·xH 2 O, which led to 13 new metal–acetate polymeric complexes identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. We found that the diversity in coordination modes of the simple acetate ligand that interfere with substitution of the softer N donors led to several readily crystallizable complexes forming two distinct groups with respect to f-element interaction with the ionic liquid precursors. When the acidic/basic azole ratio was 1:3, acetate and a neutral basic azole were found to be coordinated to the metal centers but no water, although in one case (2) water was observed in the secondary coordination sphere: [Ce(μ 2 -OAc) 3 (C 1 im)] n (1, C 1 im = 1-methylimidazole), [Nd(μ 2 -(OAc) 3 (C 1 im)] n ·nH 2 O (2), [Ce(μ 2 -OAc) 3 (C 2 im)] n (3, C 2 im = 1-ethylimidazole), [Ln(μ 2 -OAc) 3 DMF] n (Ln = Nd (4), Ce (5); dimethylformamide (DMF) was substituted for the azole mixture), and [Nd(μ 2 -OAc) 3 (C 4 im)] n (6, C 4 im = 1-butylimidazole). However, when the stoichiometric ratio was 1:1, water was always observed coordinated to the metal ions with the acidic azole included in the structure as a solvate or cocrystal, despite a higher reaction temperature: [Nd(μ 2 -OAc) 3 (OH 2 )] n ·n(1,2,3-Taz) (7, 1,2,3-Taz = 1,2,3-triazole), [Ln(μ 2 -OAc) 3 (OH 2 )] n ·n(4,5-DCim) (Ln = Nd (8), Ce (9), 4,5-DCim = 4,5-dicyanoimidazole), [Ln(μ 2 -OAc) 3 (OH 2 )] n ·n(3,5-diNH 2 -1,2,4-Taz) (Ln = Nd (10), Ce (11), 3,5-diNH 2 -1,2,4-Taz = 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole), [Ce(μ 2 -OAc) 3 (OH 2 )] n ·n(3-NH 2 -1,2,4-Taz) (12, 3-NH 2 -1,2,4-Taz = 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole), and [Nd(μ 2 -OAc) 3 (OH 2 )] n ·n(5-NH 2 -Tz) (13, 5-NH2-Tz = 5-aminotetrazole). All of the compounds retain the Ln:OAc– ratio of 1:3 and form 1D polymeric chains; however, they exhibit a variety of coordination modes affecting the degree of chain condensation. The isolation of both hydrated and anhydrous products revealed different abilities of the investigated soft N-donors to compete with O-donors finding their place in the coordination sphere of the lanthanide or in the crystal lattice.

Ion Exchange Gels Allow Organic Electrochemical Transistor Operation with Hydrophobic Polymers in Aqueous Solution

Conjugated-polymer-based organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are being studied for applications ranging from biochemical sensing to neural interfaces. While new polymers that interface digital electronics with the aqueous chemistry of life are being developed, the majority of high-performance organic transistor materials are poor at transporting biologically relevant ions. Here, the operating mode of an organic transistor is changed from that of an electrolyte-gated organic field-effect transistor (EGOFET) to that of an OECT by incorporating an ion exchange gel between the active layer and the aqueous electrolyte. This device works by taking up biologically relevant ions from solution and injecting more hydrophobic ions into the active layer. Using poly[2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl) thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] as the active layer and a blend of an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) as the ion exchange gel, four orders of magnitude improvement in device transconductance and a 100-fold increase in kinetics are demonstrated. The ability of the ion-exchange-gel OECT to record biological signals by measuring the action potentials of a Venus flytrap is demonstrated. These results show the possibility of using interface engineering to open up a wider palette of organic semiconductors as OECTs that can be gated by aqueous solutions.

The solubility of olivine in basaltic liquids - An ionic model

A model is presented which enables the temperature at which olivine is in equilibrium with any alkali-depleted basaltic compound to be calculated to within + or - 30 C. It is noted that the error increases substantially when applied to terrestrial basalts which contain several weight percent alkalis. In addition the model predicts and quantifies the reduced activity of SiO4(4-) monomers due to increasing SiO2 concentrations in the melt. It is shown that the coordination of alumina in melts which precipitate olivine only appears to be dominantly octahedral, while titanium acts as a polmerizing agent by interconnecting previously isolated SiO4(4-) monomers. It is concluded that the model is sufficiently sensitive to show that there are small repulsive forces between Mg(2+) and calcium ions which are in association with normative diopside in the melt.

Quantification of zwitterion betaine in betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and its influence on liquid–liquid equilibrium with water

In this study, ionic liquids (ILs) have been proposed as extractants for separation of metals, including rare earth elements. In particular, protonated betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([HBet][TFSI]) exhibits liquid–liquid phase behavior with water that can be tuned by complexation with various metals. Here we show that previously undetected neutral zwitterionic betaine formed during the IL synthesis can affect the phase behaviour. Traditional synthesis of protonated betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide results in significant amounts of neutral zwitterionic betaine impurity, which dramatically affects phase behavior.

Deep Eutectic Solvent Formed by Imidazolium Cyanopyrrolide and Ethylene Glycol for Reactive CO 2 Separations

Solvents made from a reactive ionic liquid, with an imidazolium cation and pyrrolide anion, and ethylene glycol at a wide compositional range were studied for separations of CO 2 at low partial pressures (<<0.1 bar up to 1 bar). Thermal analysis and measurements of viscosity and density show compacting of the liquid upon mixing with enhanced stability achieved by hydrogen bonding. A detailed mechanistic study was performed by IR, quantitative NMR, and ab initio calculations that show significant CO 2 absorption capacity below 5000 ppm of CO 2 in N 2 . Three reversible routes are found that yield carbonate (major product), carboxylate (moderate), and carbamate (minor) species. With CO 2 at 100% RH, bicarbonate along with carbonate species form. The CO 2 -ethlyene glycol reaction complex, the carbonate anion, is stabilized by the hydrogen bonding and Coulombic interactions, thus preventing evaporation of the solvent during regeneration. This study demonstrates a promising approach to designer green solvents for CO 2 separations in open systems such as direct air capture.

Design and Gas Separation Performance of Imidazolium Poly(ILs) Containing Multivalent Imidazolium Fillers and Crosslinking Agents

This work introduces a series of vinyl-imidazolium-based polyelectrolyte composites, which were structurally modified via impregnation with multivalent imidazolium-benzene ionic liquids (ILs) or crosslinked with novel cationic crosslinkers which possess internal imidazolium cations and vinylimidazolium cations at the periphery. A set of eight [C4vim][Tf2N]-based membranes were prepared via UV-initiated free radical polymerization, including four composites containing di-, tri-, tetra-, and hexa-imidazolium benzene ILs and four crosslinked derivatives which utilized tri- and tetra- vinylimidazolium benzene crosslinking agents. Structural and functional characterizations were performed, and pure gas permeation data were collected to better understand the effects of “free” ILs dispersed in the polymeric matrix versus integrated ionic crosslinks on the transport behaviors of these thin films. These imidazolium PIL:IL composites exhibited moderately high CO2 permeabilities (~20–40 Barrer), a 4–7× increase relative to corresponding neat PIL, with excellent selectivities against N2 or CH4. The addition of imidazolium-benzene fillers with increased imidazolium content were shown to correspondingly enhance CO2 solubility (di- < tri- < tetra- < hexa-), with the [C4vim][Tf2N]: [Hexa(Im+)Benz ][Tf2N] composite showing the highest CO2 permeability (PCO2 = 38.4 Barrer), while maintaining modest selectivities (αCO2/CH4 = 20.2, αCO2/N2 = 23.6). Additionally, these metrics were similarly improved with the integration of more ionic content bonded to the polymeric matrix; increased PCO2 with increased wt% of the tri- and tetra-vinylimidazolium benzene crosslinking agent was observed. This study demonstrates the intriguing interactions and effects of ionic additives or crosslinkers within a PIL matrix, revealing the potential for the tuning of the properties and transport behaviors of ionic polymers using ionic liquid-inspired small molecules.

Physics-informed machine learning to predict solvatochromic parameters of designer solvents with case studies in CO 2 and lignin dissolution

The polarity of solvents plays a critical role in various research applications, particularly in their solubilities. Polarity is conveniently characterized by the Kamlet-Taft parameters that is, the hydrogen bonding acidity (α), the basicity (β), and the polarizability (π*). Obtaining Kamlet-Taft parameters is very important for designer solvents, namely ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs). However, given the unlimited theoretical number of combinations of ionic pairs in ILs and hydrogen-bond donor/acceptor pairs in DESs, experimental determination of their Kamlet-Taft parameters is impractical. To address this, the present study developed two different machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict Kamlet-Taft parameters for designer solvents using quantum chemically derived input features. The ML models developed in the present study showed accurate predictions with high R 2 and low RMSE values. Further, in the context of present interest in the circular bioeconomy, the relationship between the basicities and acidities of designer solvents and their ability to dissolve lignin and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is discussed. Our method thus guides the design of effective solvents with optimal Kamlet-Taft parameter values dissolving and converting biomass and CO 2 into valuable chemicals.

Room Temperature to 150 °C Lithium Metal Batteries Enabled by a Rigid Molecular Ionic Composite Electrolyte

Molecular ionic composites (MICs), made from ionic liquids and a rigid-rod polymer poly(2,2'-disulfonyl-4,4'-benzidine terephthalamide) (PBDT), are a new type of rigid gel electrolyte that combine fast ion transport with high thermal stability and mechanical strength. In this work, a MIC electrolyte membrane is prepared that is composed of PBDT, lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (Pyr 14 TFSI) in a mass ratio of 10:10:80. The ionic conductivity at 25 °C is 0.56 mS cm –1 with no added flammable/volatile components. Although the polymer content is only 10 wt%, this MIC membrane is rigid with a tensile modulus of 410 MPa at room temperature. The MIC membrane remains stable and rigid at 200 °C with the shear storage modulus (G') only slightly decreasing by 35%. Li/MIC/LiFePO 4 cells demonstrate stable cycling performance over a wide temperature range from 23 to 150 °C. The specific discharge capacity at 100 and 150 °C at 1 C rate exceeds 160 mAh g –1 . The discharge capacity retention is 99% after 50 cycles at 150 °C. Furthermore, this stable battery performance shows that this low polymer content MIC membrane qualifies for use as a solid electrolyte in lithium metal batteries operating over a wide temperature range.
