Commercial-scale production of Mo-99 demands a facility-wide assessment of radiation-induced degradation across process equipment, instrumentation, and purification media. Key factors— total ionizing dose, dose rate, radiolysis-driven chemistry, thermal loads, activation, and any neutron-related effects—should inform material selection, shielding, and component layout. Purification materials (sorbents, resins, filters, seals, housing) require particular attention to ensure that irradiation does not alter selectivity or capacity, generate fines, or introduce leachables that could compromise Mo-99 purity or downstream Tc-99m generator performance. Dose mapping, accelerated irradiation testing, and studies of extractables/leachables together provide the basis for setting maintenance, calibration, and replacement intervals and for qualifying materials that retain mechanical integrity, chemical compatibility, and radiopurity over their service life.

Recently, lithium nitride (Li 3 N) has been proposed as a chemical warfare agent (CWA) neutralization reagent for its ability to produce nucleophilic ammonia molecules and hydroxide ions in aqueous solution. Quantum chemical calculations can provide insight into the Li 3 N neutralization process that has been studied experimentally. Here, we calculate reaction-free energies associated with the Li3N-based neutralization of the CWA VX using quantum chemical density functional theory and ab initio methods. We find that alkaline hydrolysis is more favorable to either ammonolysis or neutral hydrolysis for initial P-S and P-O bond cleavages. Reaction-free energies of subsequent reactions are calculated to determine the full reaction pathway. Notably, products predicted from favorable reactions have been identified in previous experiments.

Effects of ionizing radiation on the amino acids of proteins and the reactivity of the protonated amino group depends upon the pK subscript a of the group. Estimates of the rate constants for reactions involving the amino acid side chains are presented. These rate constants gave an approximate rate constant for three different protein molecules.
Dimensional changes (strain) along the three principal crystal axes of the antiferromagnet CsMnCl3-2H2O are studied as a function of magnetic field and temperature in the antiferromagnetic, spin flopped, and paramagnetic phases. Changes in dimensions through the phase transitions between the magnetic states are examined. By applying the molecular field model and utilizing all available information, magnetic properties of CsMnCl3-2H2O are determined. The possible usefulness of this material in a magnetic refrigeration cycle is evaluated.
A reflectance spectrum (0.62-2.6 microns) of Mars (integral disk) is obtained using a newly developed IR spectrometer at the 2.25 m telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Details of the instrument, observations, and data reduction are presented. Several distinct absorption features are evident that were apparently caused by H2O, but the positions and intensities of the features are quite unusual. In summary, the regolith is probably not as desiccated and dehydrated as the full disk reflectance spectrum and Viking soil analyses would suggest. The surface materials become desiccated and dehydrated as a result of solar UV effects and because of the relative adsorption and desorption rates during the strong diurnal cycling. There may be significant amounts of H2O at depth, and in the Solis Lacus region the H2O reservoir may extend to within a few centimeters of the surface. The Solis Lacus region may therefore be an important target for future Mars landing or sample return mission.
