Cooling Mixed A-Site Halide Perovskites: Impact of Temperature on Optical and Structural Properties

The widespread utilization of perovskite-based photovoltaics requires probing both the structural and optical properties under extreme operating conditions to gain a holistic understanding of the material behavior under stressors. Here, in this study, we investigate the temperature-dependent behavior of mixed A-site cation lead triiodide perovskite thin films (85% methylammonium and 15% formamidinium) in the range from 300 to 20 K. Through a combination of optical and structural techniques, we find that the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition occurs at similar to 110 K for this perovskite composition, as indicated by the change in the diffraction pattern. With decreasing temperature, the quantum yield increases with a concurrent elongation of the carrier lifetimes, indicating suppression of nonradiative recombination pathways. Interestingly, in contrast to single A-site cation perovskites, an additional optical transition appears in the absorption spectrum when the phase transition is approached, which is also reflected in the emission spectrum. We propose that the splitting of the optical absorption and emission is due to local segregation of the mixed cation perovskite during the phase transition.

Bulky Cation-Modified Interfaces for Thermally Stable Lead Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Charged conjugated organic molecules offer promising prospects for reducing nonradiative recombination at interfaces in perovskite solar cells, while protecting the active layer from moisture. However, several studies have shown that the heat induced diffusion of these cations leads to irreversible solar cell degradation. Passivation molecules for perovskite can reconstruct the film surface into lower-dimensional phases when exposed to thermal stress, impeding charge extraction and affecting the photoconversion efficiency (PCE) of devices. In this work, we study how molecular interactions between passivation molecules and 3D CsFAPbI 3 perovskite impact stability and charge extraction at the perovskite/hole transport layer interfaces. Two model π- conjugated molecules are studied: 2-([2,2′-bithiophen]-5-yl)ethan-1-aminium iodide (2TI) and 2-(3‴,4′-dimethyl-[2,2′:5′,2″:5″,2‴- quaterthiophen]-5-yl)ethan-1-ammonium iodide (4TmI). We demonstrate that the speed of surface layer reconstruction under thermal stress can be controlled by the cation size and correlate these structural changes with the solar cell performance and stability. Devices treated with 2TI and 4TmI achieve PCEs over 21% and maintain their performance under thermal stress. Our findings demonstrate that thermal stability in PSCs can be achieved via the design engineering of passivation agents, offering a blueprint for developing next-generation passivation molecules.

Solution-Processable Copper Halide Based Hybrid Materials Consisting of Cationic Ligands with Different Coordination Modes

Here, using cationic ligands containing both aromatic and aliphatic coordination sites, we have synthesized and structurally characterized five new CuX-based hybrid materials consisting of anionic inorganic motifs that also form coordinate bonds with the cationic organic ligands. As a result of the unique bonding nature at the inorganic/organic interfaces, these compounds demonstrate strong resistance toward heat and can be readily processed in solution. They emit light in the visible region ranging from cyan to yellow color, with the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) reaching 71%. The influence of the different coordination modes of the ligands on their emission behavior was investigated employing both experimental and theoretical methods, which have provided insight in understanding structure–property relationships in these materials and guidelines for tuning and enhancing their chemical and physical properties.

Iodine Close Packing in Hybrid Halide Bismuth(III) and Antimony(III) Semiconductors: (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Bi 2 I 10 and (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sb 2 I 10

Simple features in complex hybrid inorganic–organic crystalline materials provide opportunities for targeted discovery of materials with desired optoelectronic properties. In this study, we report the structure and optoelectronic properties of isostructural (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Bi 2 I 10 and (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sb 2 I 10 . The crystal structures are characterized by corner-connected metal-iodide octahedral chains that form a cubic close-packed iodine inorganic framework. Variable temperature UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals stark contrasts in the onset of absorption and color changes between the [MX6]3– based structures, due to differences in the interaction of the (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2+ organic ammonium cation and the iodine packing of the inorganic framework. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal flat bands reflective of the pseudo-1D crystal structure. Dark microwave conductivity (DMC) and time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) reveal an excitonic character with long carrier lifetimes, consistent with the electronically confined octahedral chains. Comparison of the structural features with those of other diammonium-containing crystals reveals that diammoniumheptane can substitute into structures, displacing inorganic octahedra while retaining a close-packed anion framework. This provides a means for targeting new hybrid materials in which “vacancy-ordering” provides a crystal chemical approach for targeting desirable optoelectronic properties.

Tunable Perovskite-Derived Bismuth Halides: Cs 3 Bi 2 (Cl 1– x I x ) 9

Bismuth-based perovskites are of interest as safer alternatives to lead-based optoelectronic materials. Prior studies have reported on the compounds Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 9 , Cs 3 Bi 2 I 9 , and Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 3 I 6 . Here we examine a range of compounds of the formula Cs 3 Bi 2 (Cl 1–x I x ) 9 , where x takes values from 0.09 to 0.52. Powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction were used to determine that all of these compounds adopt the layered vacancy-ordered perovskite structure observed for Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 3 I 6 , which is also the high-temperature phase of Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 9 . We find that, even with very small iodine incorporation, the structure is switched to that of Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 3 I 6 , with I atoms displaying a distinct preference for the capping sites on the BiX 6 octahedra. Optical absorption spectroscopy was employed to study the evolution of optical properties of these materials, and this is complemented by density functional theory electronic structure calculations. Finally, three main absorption features were observed for these compounds, and with increasing x, the lowest-energy features are red-shifted.

Wavelength-Selective Reactivity of Iron(III) Halide Salts in Photocatalytic C–H Functionalization

The utility of halogen radicals in hydrocarbon functionalization extends from early examples of photochemical halogenation to recent reports using photoredox catalysis with iridium complexes and simple transition metal salts such as FeCl 3 . The majority of these methods (uncatalyzed and iron-catalyzed) require UV light (λ ≤ 390 nm), and systematic efforts to enable the use of visible light remain valuable. We report the use of a simple Fe(III) salt that enables a C–H to C–C and C–N functionalization under visible light. The reactivity and selectivity profile using different light sources demonstrates wavelength-selective behavior, which was further investigated with deuterium kinetic isotope effect experiments and DFT calculations. These results show that control over the reactive intermediates in this iron-catalyzed reaction can be achieved through proper choice of the wavelength of irradiation.
