Synthesis, curing and physical behavior of maleimide terminated poly(arylene ethers)

This paper describes the synthesis of maleimide terminated poly(ether ketones) using the solution imidization process described by Summers et al. (1987). Amorphous poly(arylene ether ketones), as well as poly(arylene ether sulfones, of controlled end group functionalities and molecular weights were synthesized by nucleophilic step polymerization of bisphehol-A phenolates with activated halides, such as 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone, and 'monofunctional' end cappers such as m-aminophenol. The thermal properties of the system included glass transition temperature (Tg) values of 160-170 C, with modulus above Tg proportional to cross-link density, which in turn was reciprocally related to oligomer molecular weight. The measurements of the fracture toughness values showed the materials to be very ductile, with the toughness increasing with oligomer molecular weight.

Chemoviscosity modeling for thermosetting resin systems, part 3

A new analytical model for simulating chemoviscosity resin has been formulated. The model is developed by modifying the well established Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) theory in polymer rheology for thermoplastic materials. By introducing a relationship between the glass transition temperature (T sub g (t)) and the degree of cure alpha(t) of the resin system under cure, the WLF theory can be modified to account for the factor of reaction time. Temperature-dependent functions of the modified WLF theory parameters C sub 1 (T) and C sub 2 (T) were determined from the isothermal cure data. Theoretical predictions of the model for the resin under dynamic heating cure cycles were shown to compare favorably with the experimental data. This work represents a progress toward establishing a chemoviscosity model which is capable of not only describing viscosity profiles accurately under various cure cycles, but also correlating viscosity data to the changes of physical properties associated with the structural transformations of the thermosetting resin systems during cure.

Thermoplastic adhesives based on 4,4'-isophthaloyldiphthalic anhydride (IDPA)

Thermoplastic polyimides were prepared and evaluated as adhesives. These materials are based on 4,4'-isophthaloyldiphathalic anhydride (IDAP) and either metaphenylene diamine (MPD) or 3,3'-diaminobenzophenone (DBAP). Both polymers exhibit excellent adhesive properties; however, the IDPA-MPD is the more attractive system because of a combination of high mechanical and physical properties as well as being made from commercially attractive monomers. The IDPA-MPD is an isomeric form of the commercially available adhesive and matrix resin, LARC-TPI and both systems have the same glass transition temperature and exhibit similar adhesive properties.

Polyphenylquinoxalines containing alkylenedioxy groups

New polyphenylquinoxalines have been prepared from the reaction of novel bis(a-diketones) with aromatic bis(o-diamines). These polyphenylquinoxalines have lower glass transition temperatures and melt viscosities and consequently better processability than known polyphenylquinoxalines. The properties of these new polyphenylquinoxalines (tensile strength, modulus, elongation, adhesive strength, facture energy, and solvent resistance) are comparable with the properties known polyphenylquinoxalines.

The effects of simulated space environmental parameters on six commercially available composite materials

The effects of simulated space environmental parameters on microdamage induced by the environment in a series of commercially available graphite-fiber-reinforced composite materials were determined. Composites with both thermoset and thermoplastic resin systems were studied. Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) exposures were simulated by thermal cycling; geosynchronous-orbit (GEO) exposures were simulated by electron irradiation plus thermal cycling. The thermal cycling temperature range was -250 F to either 200 F or 150 F. The upper limits of the thermal cycles were different to ensure that an individual composite material was not cycled above its glass transition temperature. Material response was characterized through assessment of the induced microcracking and its influence on mechanical property changes at both room temperature and -250 F. Microdamage was induced in both thermoset and thermoplastic advanced composite materials exposed to the simulated LEO environment. However, a 350 F cure single-phase toughened epoxy composite was not damaged during exposure to the LEO environment. The simuated GEO environment produced microdamage in all materials tested.

Improved high-temperature resistant matrix resins

A study was performed with the objective of developing matrix resins that exhibit improved thermo-oxidative stability over state-of-the-art high temperature resins for use at temperatures up to 644 K (700 F) and air pressures up to 0.7 MPa (100 psia). The work was based upon a TRW discovered family of polyimides currently licensed to and marketed by Ethyl Corporation as EYMYD(R) resins. The approach investigated to provide improved thermo-oxidative properties was to use halogenated derivatives of the diamine, 2, 2-bis (4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl) hexafluoropropane (4-BDAF). Polyimide neat resins and Celion(R) 12,000 composites prepared from fluorine substituted 4-BDAF demonstrated unexpectedly lower glass transition temperatures (Tg) and thermo-oxidative stabilities than the baseline 4-BDAF/PMDA polymer.

Synthesis and characterization of BTDA-based polyamide-imides

Several thermally stable tough linear polyimides containing amide linkages were synthesized which have application as matrix resins in graphite reinforced structures. Isomers of diaminobenzanilide were reacted with 3,3-prime,4,4-prime-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride, and then thermally converted to the polyamide-imide. Polymers prepared from unsubstituted amide diamines and from N-substituted amide diamines exhibited high inherent viscosities and glass transition temperatures. The mechanical properties of these polymers were found to be superior to those of LARC-TPI.

Adhesive properties of a semi-crystalline polyimide

Adhesive and film properties of a new semi-crystalline polyimide, designated LARC-CPI, having a glass transition temperature of 222 C and a crystalline melt temperature of 350 C are presented. The films exhibited excellent resistance to solvents and strong base. Compact tension specimens from LARC-CPI moldings displayed a fracture energy of 37.8 lb/sq in. Titanium tensile shear specimens gave strengths of 6250 psi initially at 25 C, 7120 psi at 25 C after 1000 hours at 232 C, 2800 psi at 232 C after annealing for 5 hours at 300 C, and 3670 psi at 232 C after 100 hours at 316 C in air.

A semi-empirical approach for the chemoviscosity modeling of reactive resin system

A new analytical model for simulating chemoviscosity of a thermosetting resin is presented. The model is developed on the basis of the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF, 1955) polymer rheology theory for the thermoplastic materials, which was modified to account for the factor of reaction time by introducing a relationship between the glass transition temperature and the degree of cure of the resin system. Theoretical predictions of the chemoviscosity profiles under dynamic curing conditions are shown to compare favorably with the experimental data obtained on the Hercules 3501-6 resin system cured under seven isothermal conditions.

Radiation durability of polymeric matrix composites

The combined effects of thermal cycling and high-dose electron irradiation on the mechanical properties of laminated graphite/polymeric CFRPs are investigated experimentally. The test apparatus and procedures are briefly described, and the results are presented in extensive tables and graphs. It is found that electron radiation produces similar significant reductions in the glass transition temperatures of the neat resins and CFRPs. The radiation-induced degradation products tend to plasticize the matrix at high temperature but embrittle it at low temperature.

A thermally modified polymer matrix composite material with structural integrity to 371 C

The potential for utilizing surface coatings to inhibit the thermal oxidation of polymer matrix composites was studied. Isothermal, inert gas exposures of graphite/PMR-15 composites indicated that after an initial loss of weight, no significant amounts of thermal degradation products are given off during high temperature exposures in the absence of oxygen. As long as a coating remains effective, the composite material should remain stable. It was also found that the glass transition temperature T sub g of the matrix resin could be increased to values in excess of 400 C. This resulted in measured short beam shear strengths of 75.9 MPa (11 Ksi), flexural strengths of 1172 MPa (170 Ksi) and flexural moduli of 141 GPa (20.5 Msi) for the material at a test temperature of 371 C. The treatment that was used caused a decrease in the PMR-15 resin density from 1.31 to 1.29 gm/cc. It was concluded that state-of-the-art composites, protected by oxygen-impervious coatings, can be used as materials of construction with structural integrity to at least 371 C and possibly above.

700 F properties of autoclave cured PMR-II composites

Studies were conducted to develop autoclave processing parameters for graphite reinforced PMR-2 resin composite materials intended for use in applications at temperatures up to 371 degrees (700 F). The effect of resin composition on autoclaveability was investigated. The effect of various graphite fibers and resin composition on 343 C (650 F) and 371 C (700 F) thermo-oxidative stability and mechanical properties was also investigated. The results of the processing studies show that PMR-2 resin composites can be easily fabricated under autoclave conditions. Autoclaved laminates exposed to 1 atm of air at 343 C (650 F) and 371 C (700 F) exhibited less than 5 percent weight loss after 750 hr exposure to 650 F air and 8 percent weight loss during exposure to 700 F air for 500 hr. After 500 hr exposure, autoclaved laminates exhibited greater than 90 percent retention of initial 650 and 700 F flexural and interlaminar shear strengths. The effect of resin formulated molecular weight and postcure conditions on laminate glass transition temperature is also discussed.

Composites of vinyl polystyrylpyridine/bismaleimide-aliphatic ether copolymers

An aliphatic ether bismaleimide was prepared and coreacted with a polyvinylstyrylpyridine (VPSP) oligomer. Studies showed that a controlled ratio of aliphatic to aromatic units in the polymer backbone improved both processibility and interlaminar shear properties for the carbon-fiber composite system. This modified resin was readily soluble in tetrahydrofuran, allowing for better fiber impregnation and thus enhancing adhesive properties and reproducibility. DSC studies have shown a lower cure temperature for the copolymer than for the neat aliphatic bismaleimide, and a glass transition temperature of 260 C, which is more than adequate for most applications. Limited measurements indicated an improvement in toughness (impact resistance).

Polyimides containing carbonyl and ether connecting groups - II

In a study of polyimides containing carbonyl and ether connecting groups between aromatic rings, several new polyimides were prepared and characterized. A few of these polymers were semicrystalline. Glass transition temperatures ranged from 164 to 258 C, and crystalline melt temperatures were observed between 350 and 424 C. The semicrystalline polyimide from the reaction of 3.3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride and 1,3-bis(4-aminophenoxy-4'-benzoyl)benzene provided transparent orange films with excellent tensile properties, exceptional resistance to solvents and strong base, and high thermooxidative stability. In addition, this polyimide provided excellent adhesive strength for joining titanium (6Al-4V) to titanium.

Initial evaluation of novel polyamide-imides and their copolymers as adhesives

Continued interest by the research community in thermally stable, tough, high temperature adhesives has resulted in the investigation by Langley Research Center of two linear aromatic polyamide-imide (PAI) homopolymers and two linear aromatic PAI copolymers. The homopolymers were made with either 3,3'=DABA or 4,4'-DABA and BTDA. The two polymers were prepared with a monomer ratio of 0.75 DABP:0.25 DABA:1.00 BTDA. These aromatic PAIs possess high thermal stability because of intermolecular hydrogen bonding and chain stiffness. Lap shear strength (LSS) was the main criteria used to evaluate the polymers as adhesives. LSS of bonded Ti-6Al-4V was determined at room temperature (RT), 177, 204 and 232 C. The glass transition temperature and the type of bond failure were also determined. The best LSS values of the four adhesive systems investigated were obtained with the PAI copolymer identified in the report as LARC-TPI (25 percent 3,3'-DABA); however, it did not produce LSSs nearly as high as LARC-TPI. The poor flow properties observed appear to be due to a combination of high molecular weight and the increased interchain electronic interactions associated with the amide group.

Tough, Microcracking-Resistant, High-Temperature Polymer

Simultaneous synthesis from thermosetting and thermoplastic components yields polyimide with outstanding properties. Involves process in which one polymer cross-linked in immediate presence of other, undergoing simultaneous linear chain extension. New material, LaRC-RP40 synthesized from high-temperature thermosetting imide prepolymer and from thermoplastic monomer. Three significantly improved properties: toughness, resistance to microcracking, and glass-transition temperature. Shows promise as high-temperature matrix resin for variety of components of aircraft engines and for use in other aerospace structures.

The 3F condensation polyimides: Review and update

Nine new condensation polyimides containing the phenyltrifluoroethylidene (3F) linkage were synthesized by the amic-acid route. Several other polyimides, including some with hexafluoroisopropylidene (6F) linkage, were also prepared as controls. Amic-acid solutions were characterized by determining their inherent viscosities prior to thermal conversion into polyimide films. Glass transition temperatures (T sub g), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and isothermal weight loss data (at 316, 371, and 371 C under 0.5 MPa air pressure) were obtained for the films. The films were pulverized into molding powders which, in turn, were thermally processed under pressure into neat resin disks. The disks were also characterized by T sub g's and 316 and 371 C isothermal weight losses. The film study identified two new polyimides with T sub g's greater than 371 C and two new polyimides with low rates of weight loss. The resin disks exhibited the same overall trends in T sub g and weight loss as the respective films, however the weight loss per unit surface area was always greater, presumably due to molecular degradation induced during preparation of the molding powders. The overall results indicate that polyimides containing the 3F linkage have T sub g's and thermo-oxidative stability comparable to polyimides containing the 6F group. Alternate technology was also shown by the synthesis of two new polyalkyl substituted 3F diamines and five more new 3F polymers. Their potential as photoresists was demonstrated by T sub g advancement after ultraviolet exposure. Last, four U.S. patents on 3F monomers and polymers were issued and up to eight more are pending.

LaRC TPI 1500 series polymers

The crystallization behavior and the melt flow properties of two batches of 1500 series LaRC-TPI polymers from Mitsui Toatsu Chemicals (MTC) were investigated. The characterization methods include Differential Scanning Calorimetry, the x ray diffractography and the melt rheology. The as-received materials possess initial crystalline melting peak temperatures of 295 and 305 C, respectively. These materials are less readily recrystallizable at elevated temperatures when compared to other semicrystalline thermoplastics. For the samples annealed at temperatures below 330 C, a semicrystalline polymer can be obtained. On the other hand, a purely amorphous structure is realized in the samples annealed at temperatures above 330 C. Isothermal crystallization kinetics were studied by means of the simple Avrami equation. The viscoelastic properties at elevated temperatures below and above glass transition temperature of the polymers were measured. Information with regard to the molecule sizes and distributions in these polymers were also extracted from melt rheology.
